Best Things to  do in Boone NC at Christmas

Boone NC is a popular mountain town that serves as a base for mountain visitors wanting to enjoy all of the great outdoor things to see and do in the High Country of the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains.  Boone is also a bustling town during the holiday season, offering lots of holiday things to see and do in and around Boone.

Christmas in Boone NC offers a number of things to see and do and if you're lucky, you might even see some snow!   Holiday events in Boone include: a parade, a Christmas train ride, tree lighting, shopping, visits to Christmas tree farms, and much more!

While there, you can also enjoy the nearby towns of Beech Mountain, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk.  You can also enjoy the outdoors by exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls, Linn Cove Viaduct, and Moses Cone Memorial Park as well.

Tweetsie Christmas

An annual event at Tweetsie Railroad each year, beginning in November and running through December is Tweetsie Christmas.   This family-friendly holiday event offers holiday fun that your entire family will enjoy.  

This wonderful Christmas event features a nighttime train ride with a 3-mile loop lined with beautiful Christmas lights.   You can also enjoy live Christmas shows, amusement rides, a visit with Santa in the Gingerbread House, holiday treats, and hot chocolate and s'mores over outdoor fires.

Many small towns in the mountains have annual Christmas parades and Boone NC is no exception.   Boone's annual Christmas Parade proceeds through Downtown Boone along King Street.   Local organizations, businesses, law enforcement, firefighters, and local bands all put on their holiday best to celebrate the season. 

The parade features floats, costumes, performances, and marchers! Stay until the end where Santa Claus himself make an appearance!  While visiting, enjoy all the shops and restaurants that are open as well.

For 2022, the Parade is on December 10 at 2 pm on King Street in Downtown Boone.

The High Country of North Carolina and Boone itself are well known for Christmas Tree Farms.   People from all over North Carolina and Virginia drive to the Boone area to pick a Christmas tree each year, from one of the many Choose and Cut tree farms.

The farms generally offer Fraser Firs in many different sizes and shapes.  The farms also often offer garlands, wreaths, gifts, and hot chocolate.   Some offer hay rides and other activities as well.

Apple Hill Farm is a working Alpaca Farm, located just outside of Boone NC.   During the Holidays, the farm is decorated for the holidays, and provides special tours of the farm.  Tours generally run about 45 minutes long and offer an interactive educational experience as you learn about the animals.   Your tour focuses on how all of the animals have a job and purpose on the farm. Many are rescues and have cool stories as well!

A visit to Apple Hill Farm is a treat anytime during the year, but extra special during the holidays!

Festive First Friday and Solar Tree Lighting

Each year, the town of Boone NC begins Festive First Friday and the lighting of the Solar Christmas tree on the first Friday in December.  The events are held at the historic Jones House in Downtown Boone.  The event features carriage rides, marshmallow snowball fights, carolers, holiday treats, and more!   Shops and Art Galleries in downtown Boone are also open.  You can even meet Mrs. Claus, and write letters to Santa!

An Appalachian Christmas

Mountain Home Music in Boone NC honors musicians of the Appalachian region and has a number of music and art events throughout the year.  Mountain Home Music closes its season each year with a free Christmas concert.  

Instead of charging admission, a collection is taken and the proceeds go to Santa’s Toy Box and the Hospitality House.

Go Shopping at the original Mast General Store

Just a short drive from downtown Boone NC, is Valle Crucis, the home to the original Mast General Store.  This store will take you back to Christmases of many years ago, and to more simple times.  The store is wonderful to visit year-round, but extra special and beautiful during the holidays.  

The store is decored for the holidays, and just magical.  You can also do your shopping and enjoy the special holiday and Christmas sections of the store.   You can even visit with Santa while visiting.  Other Holiday activities include Christmas book signing, caroling, and holiday-themed scavenger hunts.

Crazy Christmas at Mystery Hill

Mystery Hill is one of the most unique attractions we've ever visited, and it's lots of fun for the whole family as well.  You visit during the Holiday season for Crazy Christmas at Mystery Hill!

Many of us have wondered how Santa gets around to all the good boys and girls each year, in just one night!?  Turns out, according to Mystery Hill, Santa uses gravitational vortexes just like the one found at Mystery Hill!   Turns out though, some mischievous elves have messed up Santa's vortex generator, and sent elves flying everywhere!

When visiting, you can help rescue the elves?   Or maybe join in to throw snowballs to help prevent a Yeti attack?  You can also just relax in the Christmas Lights walk as well.

In addition to all of these fun and unique holiday activities, you can enjoy all of the great things normally found at Mystery Hill as well!  Crazy Christmas at Mystery Hill runs from November 25 - December 23rd for 2022.

Christmas Day Skiing

Of course, the winter brings the holiday season and snow!   App Ski Mountain in Boone NC is a well-known and popular destination for skiing!  On Christmas day from 1 pm to 10 pm, App Ski Mountain is open for Christmas Day Skiing.    Proceeds for the day go to a fundraiser for the Appalachian Ski Mountain's ski patrol.
