sliding rock to reopen 2022

BREAKING NEWS 3/15/2022 - Sliding Rock Recreation Area, located in Pisgah National Forest, will re-open on April 30th, 2022.   One of the most popular attractions in Pisgah National Forest, Sliding Rock was closed in August due to damage and debris from significant flooding that occurred.  The debris made the area unsafe for visitors.   The park service has been very secretive about their work, but announced today that they are making good progress, and expect to re-open on April 30th.   Good news for those who love visiting Sliding Rock!

Sliding Rock NC

Sliding rock is an all natural, 60' waterfall that you can slide down and then plunge into a 8' pool at the bottom.  During busy times, the line to slide extends the entire length of the 60' boulder, along the metal fence shown in the photo above.

People wait their turn to get into their favorite spot and then slide through the 50-60 degree water.   The water is cold, but refreshing.   More than 11,000 gallons of water flow over sliding rock each minute to propel you down the slide and into the pool.  Sliding Rock is incredibly popular, and can often be very busy during the summer months, especially on weekends.

Sliding Rock NC is open year round during daylight hours, and this includes during the offseason and winter.  You can slide during offseason times, but the water is colder than usual and their are no lifeguards or staff on duty.

For 2022, Lifeguards will be on on duty from Saturday, April 30 through September 1 from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM.  The cost to enter when lifeguards are on duty is $4/person.  Children under 6 years of age are free.  Visiting during off hours is free.

Fall at Sliding Rock

In addition to sliding and swimming, there are a number of observation areas and decks with benches and seats, where you can relax and watch people sliding.  I'm not much into cold water, and neither is my wife, but we just enjoy going and watching other people sliding and having a good time.  Watching the kids and people having a good time is a great way to relax.

There are full restroom and changing facilities at Sliding Rock.  For food, you'll need to drive to Brevard, NC were there are plenty of places to eat.

Tips for visiting Sliding Rock NC

  1. The pool at the bottom is 8 foot deep, so you need to know how to swim.  Children under 7 must slide with an adult.
  2. No floatation devices (like tubes, floaties or noodles) are allowed.  Only life jackets are permitted.
  3. Blue Jean shorts are recommended.  Bathing suits will work, but they can get worn through pretty quick sliding down the rock.  Bathing suits are also subject to "wedgies", especially if you're female.  Water shoes are also highly recommended.
  4. During the prime time hours of summer, the lot can often fill up.  To avoid the crowd, arrive before 11am or after 4pm.
  5. No alcohol or picnicking is allowed.

While you're in the area, be sure to stop by Looking Glass Falls, just another mile or so down 276 towards Brevard, NC.  If you enjoy waterfalls and swimming holes, check our Waterfalls of NC article for a full list of wonderful waterfalls.
