2026 Updates

As of July 2026, Roaring Fork Falls Trail is open. The U.S. Forest Service reopened the trail in May 2025 after it had been closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene.

Nearby Setrock Creek Falls and Black Mountain Campground remain closed because of storm damage. Other roads and trails within the South Toe River area may also have closures or limited access. Follow all posted signs and gates, and check current U.S. Forest Service conditions before visiting other destinations in the area.

Why Hike to Roaring Fork Falls?

Roaring Fork Falls is an excellent choice for families, casual hikers, and anyone looking for an impressive waterfall without a long or difficult hike. 

Most of the hike follows a wide gravel road through a heavily wooded section of Pisgah National Forest. The climb is gradual, the route is easy to follow, and there are no creek crossings or particularly steep sections.

The waterfall itself is what makes this hike special. Roaring Fork Falls flows through a narrow, rocky channel filled with moss, rhododendrons, and enormous granite boulders. The surrounding forest gives the falls a secluded and almost tropical appearance during the warmer months.

Water flow can vary considerably depending on recent rainfall. The falls is especially impressive following a period of steady rain, but the trail and rocks around the waterfall will also be wetter and more slippery.

Hiking to Roaring Fork Falls

The hike begins behind the gate across from the small parking area near the Busick Work Center. Look for the Roaring Fork Falls trail sign and follow the wide gravel road as it climbs gently into the forest.

Although this feels more like walking along an old road than a traditional hiking trail, the surrounding forest is beautiful. The tree canopy provides plenty of shade, making this a comfortable hike during the warmer months.

As you continue, Roaring Fork Creek will be below you on the left. You will often hear the water before you get a clear view of it through the trees.

Along the way, you’ll pass two unusual concrete structures beside the trail. These are old storage buildings that were once used to safely store explosives during construction work in the area. The doors have been removed, but the structures remain as an interesting reminder of the area’s past.

Continue following the road for approximately 0.6 mile. Near a small bridge, look for a trail branching off to the right. This final portion leaves the wide gravel road and follows a narrower path toward the waterfall.

The last stretch is short but contains more exposed roots, rocks, and potentially muddy areas. You’ll soon begin to hear the waterfall ahead before arriving at its base.

Roaring Fork Falls

Roaring Fork Falls is a long cascade rather than a single vertical drop. Published height estimates vary because some measurements refer to the vertical drop while others measure the full length of the sloping cascade.

The water travels down a narrow, zigzagging channel, flowing over dark rock ledges and around large boulders before reaching the creek below. Rhododendrons, moss, and thick forest surround the waterfall, creating a beautiful setting for photography.

There are several places near the base where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the falls. The immediate viewing area is relatively small, however, so it can feel crowded when several groups arrive at the same time.

Use extreme caution around the waterfall. The rocks are steep, wet, and often covered in moss. Do not attempt to climb alongside the falls or scramble toward the upper cascades. These rocks can be much more slippery than they appear.

While there is water at the base, Roaring Fork Falls is not what we would consider a true swimming hole. The area is generally shallow, rocky, and better suited for enjoying the scenery and cooling your feet.

You'll return the same way you arrived.

Tips for Visiting Roaring Fork Falls

Here are a few tips when visiting Roaring Fork Falls:

• Parking at the trailhead is very limited. Arrive early during summer, fall, and on weekends. If the parking area is full, return later rather than parking along the narrow road or blocking the Forest Service gate.
• Wear shoes with good traction (something a little better than Hey Dudes ...). The gravel road is easy to walk, but the final approach and the area around the falls can be muddy and slippery.
• Bring water, even though this is a short hike. There are no facilities, water fountains, or restrooms at the trailhead.
• Roaring Fork Falls is most impressive after recent rainfall, but avoid visiting during severe storms or periods of flooding.
• Keep children close at the waterfall. The trail is family-friendly, but the slick rocks and steep terrain beside the cascade are not.
• Pack out everything you bring with you and help keep this beautiful area clean.  Always Leave No Trace.

Where to Stay When Visiting Roaring Fork Falls

Burnsville is our top recommendation for anyone visiting Roaring Fork Falls. Downtown Burnsville is about 30 minutes from the trailhead and provides convenient access to Pisgah National Forest, Mount Mitchell, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and other outdoor destinations in Yancey County.

Burnsville also has an excellent selection of locally owned restaurants, art galleries, shops, vacation rentals, inns, and historic accommodations.

We’ve personally stayed at both the historic NuWray Hotel and the Terrell House Bed and Breakfast. Each offers a comfortable stay within walking distance of downtown shops, restaurants, and the Burnsville Town Square.

Where is Tom's Creek Falls?

Tom's Creek Falls is located between Marion and Little Switzerland, NC in McDowell County. This 80' tall multiple cascade waterfall is not only beautiful, but easy to get to as well. It is located off a 1.2 mile drive from US 221, north of Marion, and the trail is an easy 1-mile round-trip hike.   

There is even an observation deck that provides excellent views of the falls, although from a distance.

The waterfall and trail are perfect for families looking to get the kids out to burn off a little energy, and also great for those that like to hike, but can't for long distances.

To reach Tom's Creek Falls, just turn left on Huskins Branch Road off US 221 North of Marion. Drive 1.2 miles to the trailhead and parking area on the right.

The trailhead is on the right side of the parking lot, behind the large trail information sign. The parking area is small, but it's not too busy. There is a gravel/service road shortly before the parking area. This is not the trailhead, so don't let it fool you like it did us.

Hiking to Tom's Creek Falls

The hike is an easy stroll through the woods with very little elevation change, except towards the very end, where you will need to hike up a few short switchbacks to the observation deck.

The hike follows the Tom's Creek the whole way up to the base of the falls.   

During the first portion of the hike, you'll pass by a few tent campsites on your left. We took a few minutes to explore the creek here. Nothing super photogenic, but it is peaceful.

The trail wonders through the forest, and crosses a bridge on the way to fall. Along the way, there are some side trails that lead down to the creek. Again, nothing is very photogenic, but there are some nice smaller cascades to explore.

There are some benches along the way for resting and where you can just sit and enjoy the surrounding woods and sounds of the creek.

You'll soon reach the switchbacks, where you'll know you're close to the falls. You can actually hear them at this point.

Be sure to begin looking at the ground as you walk up the switchbacks, and especially at the short trail at the top to the observation deck. Why? You'll begin to notice lots of sparking and shiny rocks on and all around the trail.

The area was once a Mica mine, and lots of Mica sparkles on the trail as you walk along it. Mica is flat natural mineral that is platelike and used for many purposes, including semi-conductors, cosmetics, automobiles, and paints and pigments.

Tom's Creek Falls and the Observation Deck

Ahead, you'll see the observation deck and get your first glimpse of this gorgeous 80' waterfall, with multi-cascades.

Lots of green moss covers the rocks at Tom's Creek Falls because of the amount of sun the waterfall receives. This makes for some fun photo opportunities and gives the waterfall a unique look as well.

The observation deck provides a nice and safe, but distant, view of the waterfall. Most people hike to the deck, enjoy the falls, and return to the parking area.

BUT, if you like to get more up close and personal with waterfalls like we do, head back down the trail, and look for a small side trail heading to the left and up. Follow this trail up and over the large boulder, and down the pool at the base of the Tom's Creek Falls.

The small pool is fun for kids to play in and explore, and being at the base provides some pleasant views of the waterfall to enjoy and photograph.

Tom's Creek Falls is definitely worth the short hike when you're in the Marion, NC area!

Parking at Catawba Falls Trailhead

The Catawba Falls trailhead is about 10 minutes from downtown Old Fort NC, on the south side of I-40. You'll follow Catawba River Road until it ends in the main parking lot, where you'll find the trailhead and some public restrooms.

While the parking lot is large, on a busy weekend day, it's challenging to find a parking spot. We always recommend hiking on a weekday if possible, and arriving early.

The photo above is from early morning. We thought we were pretty early, but as you can see, the parking area was already filling up.

Hiking to Catawba Falls

We hiked to Catawba Falls many years ago, while camping with our kids when they were young.  

Since then, and rather recently, the Catawba Falls Trail was updated. At the falls, decking and stairs have been built to make viewing the falls and accessing them better and safer.

This was our first time back in many years, and since the trail improvements were made.

We visited Catawba Falls as part of a long weekend spent in Old Fort, NC and McDowell County during September 2024, literally days before the flooding from Hurricane Helene hit and did significant damage to the area.

You'll find the trailhead to Catawba Falls at the end of the parking area, and to the right of the restrooms. 

The hike begins through a forest, and alongside the Catawba River. Trees cover the trail, providing a nice shady hike nearly the entire way to the base of Catawba Falls.

The hike itself is 1.1 miles out to the base of Catawba Falls. The hike is easy to moderate, with only minor elevation changes. You'll be alongside the Catawba River most of the way, and you'll find lots of side trail to the river to explore.

We really enjoyed exploring the side trails and found some great photo opportunities just off the trail a little.

The beautiful sounds of the rushing water from the river will also enhance your enjoyment of the hike. The trail is wide and very well maintained, making it a nice, relaxing and pleasant hike.

Shortly after beginning the hike, you'll cross a large foot-bridge, with an old building to the left. These are some remanents of the old 1920s hydropower dam which served power for the town of Old Fort. You'll pass by the old dam further down the trail.

This is one of a few foot bridges you'll cross on your way to the base of the falls.

Before you begin the gradual incline up to Catawba Falls, you'll pass by a small but beautiful waterfall. If you look closely, you'll realize the falls are in fact not natural and they are falling over an old stone and concrete wall that is overgrown with vegetation. This is the old dam.

After the dam, the trail climbs up a bit more steeply and you'll know you're close to reaching Catawba Falls itself.

You'll hear Catawba Falls well before you see it. You'll also see the new stairs leading up to the newly constructed wood decking and stairs that allow you to view the falls and make the climb up to the trail to Upper Catawba Falls.

Catawba Falls

Catawba Falls itself is 100' tall, gently cascading waterfall. The entire fall is difficult to view from the base, but regardless, even from the base, the falls are gorgeous and very photogenic.

There are steps leading down to the base of the falls where you can take photos, sit and enjoy the views, or wade in the cool and crisp waters.

In the past, this is where most ended their hike. The climb up to the upper falls was steep, dangerous and involved needing to use ropes.

With the new decking and stairs, everyone can safely walk up and not only enjoy marvellous views of the entire Catawba Falls, but see Upper Catawba Falls as well.

The climb up isn't easy though. It's 580 steps and 0.3 miles to the upper falls trail. It's the equivalent of climbing a 30-story building and it is strenuous. We consider ourselves in pretty good shape, and by the time we climbed up and back down, our legs and knees were shot.

On your way up, you'll climb the new metal 60-foot tall observation tower, which delivers a magnificent view of the falls and surrounding mountains. But warning, if you are afraid of heights, skip this. The stairs are metal grates that you can see through all the way to the bottom.

Catawba Falls (Upper)

After reaching the top of the stairs (be sure to hold your hands in the air and sing the Rocky theme), you'll follow a narrow dirt trail out to the base of Upper Catawba Falls.

There are two ways to get to it. Take the second one, which has a nice wooden deck to view the falls.

While Catawba Falls is a gently cascading waterfall, made up of many smaller cascades. Upper falls is a single large, 80-foot tall plunge into a deep pool at the base.

This was our first time hiking up to Upper Catawba Falls, and it is equally beautiful as the main Catawba Falls, just different. This is a more powerful and louder waterfall and also very photogenic.

Hiking Back to the Parking Area

After visiting Upper Catawba Falls, you can return the way you came OR continue on the loop trail.

If you return the way you came, the complete hike is a 3-mile round-trip hike. Following the loop trail makes for a 4-mile round-trip hike.

Because of time constraints, and frankly, us spending too much time exploring side trails; we elected to go the shorter route and hike back the way we came.

Recent Closure History for Catawba Falls

Catawba Falls closed in 2022 for a scheduled two-year trail improvement project. The focus of the improvements were to improve safety and accessibility.   The changes were definitely necessary, given the popularity of the falls, at more than 10,000 visitors per week during peak season.  

The also beautiful upper Catawba Falls area was only accessible by climbing rocks or using ropes places by visitors. Both extremely unsafe options.

Catawba Falls reopened to the public on May 31, 2024, with lots of new changes, including:

• New wooden Stairs: Upper Falls is now accessible by 580 stairs, designed for safer access and provides enhanced views of Lower Catawba Falls.
• Observation Tower: A 60-foot metal tower was installed, that offers panoramic views of the upper falls and surrounding mountains. 
• New Trails: The Catawba Falls Ridge Trail and a Wildflower Trail were added.
• Overlooks: Several overlook platforms were built along the trail 

Catawba Falls closed again shortly after its reopening because of damage from Hurricane Helene. Several washouts, slides, and fallen trees damaged the trail out to the falls. Crews also repaired several damaged wooden overlooks near the falls.

Catawba Falls re-opened again in January 2025 and remains open for visitors.

2026 Trail Update

Little Bradley Falls is open and remains one of our favorite waterfall hikes near Saluda, but Hurricane Helene changed portions of the trail. Most hikers can still complete the hike, though it is no longer quite as easy as it once was.

Here's what to expect:

• Several downed trees remain along the trail, requiring hikers to climb over, under, or around them.
• The two creek crossings are now more challenging, with uneven and sometimes unstable rocks. Waterproof hiking shoes and hiking poles are recommended.
• A small landslide altered one section of the trail. While a path has formed around it, you'll need to navigate some uneven footing and larger steps.
• Pay close attention at the first creek crossing. A faint path branches to the left toward private property. Stay on the main trail and follow the red blazes to remain on the correct route.

Despite these changes, Little Bradley Falls is still well worth the hike. Just allow a little extra time, wear sturdy footwear, and use additional caution at the creek crossings, especially after periods of heavy rain.

Hiking to Little Bradley Falls

The Little Bradley Falls trailhead is located past the parking lot.

After parking at the lot, located before the trail on both sides of the road, you'll walk down towards Cove Creek and over the bridge on Holbert Cove Rd. that crosses Cove Creek. Just past the bridge on the right is the trailhead.

There is another trail that goes directly from the parking lot on the left. This trail does not take you to Little Bradley Falls, but leads to the very dangerous overlook for Big Bradley Falls - We strongly do not recommend going here; people have died.

At the trailhead, there are two trails: one to the right that follows along the creek, and another that heads left and up along the ridge. Go left. We went right and had to make a pretty steep scramble uphill to get back on the trail that goes to the left.

The trail follows alongside the ridge and above Cove Creek for a while, where you will eventually cross a ravine that requires going down and back up a short but steep area.

About .5 miles in, the trail will take a hard right. It's a little confusing as there is a Y here. Go right towards a small creek that you'll have to rock hop over (photo above).

After the small rock hop, you'll reach the larger creek crossing of Cove Creek shortly after. While you can rock hop it, it's tricky. The water isn't too deep (about knee-high), and it's pretty refreshing.

The trail then begins a slight climb along the ridge to the left and above the creek. The trail narrows up at this point, and is only wide enough to hike single file.

After a fairly short distance, you'll reach a boulder field that you'll need to cross. The boulders are debris from the blasting that was done for the cut-in for Holbert Cove Road, which is above you and to your right.

The boulders are easy to cross. Just be careful and watch your footing.

On the other side, the narrow trail continues and begins a slow climb down towards Cove Creek.

You'll know you're close when you see the remains of an old home on your left. The two chimneys and part of the foundation are visible.

You should be able to hear the waterfall in the distance.

This last part of the trail was really muddy when we visited, to the point we had to bypass some areas through the woods. The trail will soon branch out into a few different paths, all leading to the falls, which you'll see in the distance.

Little Bradley Falls

Little Bradley Falls is a wide, 4 tiered waterfall that cascades into a large pool below it.

The pool is surrounded by large rocks, and a small "beach" like area, perfect for small children, is to the right. The pool isn't too deep, and nice for wading and splashing around. Due to recent rains, there was a lot of silt in the water during our visit.

While the rocks and cliffs look enticing to climb on, we would highly NOT recommend it, as they are slick, and people have been seriously injured here.

We arrived later in the evening and met many people with teens and children walking back to the parking lot.

When we arrived, there were only a few people at the falls. We found a large rock, sat down, and enjoyed the sights and sounds, along with some water and snacks.

Little Bradley Falls is a really beautiful waterfall. We spent the rest of our time photographing the Little Bradley Falls and exploring around a little before heading back to the parking lot and calling it a day.

Where to Stay When Visiting Little Bradley Falls

If you're planning to spend a night or two exploring Saluda and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, we recommend staying in downtown Saluda. This charming mountain town offers a walkable downtown filled with locally owned shops, restaurants, and galleries, while also providing easy access to Little Bradley Falls and other nearby attractions.

Our Pick: The Orchard Inn

The Orchard Inn is our favorite place to stay in the Saluda area. Set on a peaceful hillside overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains, this historic inn offers comfortable accommodations, beautiful views, and a relaxing atmosphere that's perfect after a day of hiking. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant, unwind on the spacious porch, and still be just a short drive from downtown Saluda and Little Bradley Falls.

Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or using Saluda as a base for exploring nearby waterfalls, scenic drives, and hiking trails, The Orchard Inn is an excellent choice.

Elk River Falls NC

Elk River Falls, previously named "Big Falls", is a heavy flowing 50' tall waterfall that cascades down a rocky cliffside into a large pool at the bottom.  Elk River Falls is reached from the parking area by a moderate .6-mile roundtrip walk on a clearly marked and well-maintained trail.

This is a popular summertime destination for many due to it being a popular swimming hole.  Please see our section below on swimming SAFELY at Elk River Falls.

Hiking/Walking to Elk River Falls

Getting to Elk River Falls is really more of a walk than a hike.   The walk is short (0.6 miles roundtrip).  The trailhead is located at the far end of the parking area, next to the creek.   There are signs that clearly mark the trailhead, as you can see in our video.

After just a few minutes, you'll reach the top of the Falls, where the trail continues down to the base of the Falls.  We realize that going out onto the rocks above the Falls for "that photo" is tempting, but we strongly do not recommend it.   People have died falling from this location.

To reach the bottom of the Falls, you'll traverse down a small rocky area, which honestly is a bit dangerous, so be careful, especially if the rocks are wet.   Then a small staircase will take you down to the bottom of Elk River Falls.

At the bottom is a very large rock that will provide you with excellent views of the Falls, and a nice place to hang out.

Warning - Swim at your own Risk

As you walk out onto the large boulder, the area to the left is safe for wading and swimming.  However, the main pool to the right is not.  While it may look tempting, the currents in the large pool are VERY STRONG, and there is a dangerous undertow that can sweep you into deeper waters and close to the Falls.

People die at this location nearly every year, as a result of falling from the top of the water, or the cliffs or being caught in the undertow and drowning.   

Again, swimming and wading to the left of the large boulder are safe.

We really hate mentioning this, as we do not want to encourage it, but Elk River Falls is pretty well down as a cliff jumping area.   If you visit during the popular summer months, you will see people doing this.  There are warning signs all along the trail stating that you should not do this, and how dangerous it is.  But, people do it anyway.

Just don't.   Climbing up is dangerous, standing or trying to jump off is dangerous, and assuming you make it into the water, you have to fight the undertow and strong currents.  Again, people have died doing this, it's not worth your life.

Falls Trail in Buckeye Lake Recreation Center

The Buckeye Lake Recreation Area is located at 1330 Pine Ridge Rd, Beech Mountain, NC 28604.  This 50+ acre park has hiking trails, walking trails, mountain biking trails, a lake, tennis courts, playground equipment, and more.  

Additionally, it houses the 22,500-square-foot Recreation Center offering recreational opportunities like indoor basketball, volleyball, and tennis; a fitness room; a conference room with a catering area, and a playroom built specifically for children under 12.

During our visit, we kayaked on the 10-acre lake, and did the 1-mile loop hike to visit Buckeye Creek Falls, a gorgeous 20' cascading waterfall.

As part of our Beech Mountain weekend adventure, we hiked down to Buckeye Creek Falls, on the Fall Trail, located in Buckeye Recreation Center, near Beech Mountain NC.  Here is our video for that hike:

Hiking to Buckeye Creek Falls

The hike out to Buckeye Creek Falls begins at the Recreation Center parking area.  At the end of the parking area, near the playground equipment, you'll see a paved trail.  Follow this trail for a short distance, until you see a gravel trail to the right that heads down into the woods at a steep angle.  This is the access trail to the Falls Trail loop and is right next to the Tennis courts.

The trail will take you down and through the forest.   This portion of the trail is the steepest, and the overall elevation gain is 206ft.  The majority of it is along the first part of the trail.

You'll hike down to the intersection of the loop.   When we were there, it looked like the portion of the trail to the loop had been widened, and with very little care for the woods and trail itself.  Frankly, it looked hacked, and wasn't very pretty at all.

Fortunately, this is only for a short distance until you arrive at the intersection of the loop trail, and the trail becomes much nicer and more rustic.   

The distance to the falls is about the same, no matter which way you go, however, the elevation change is less to the left.  If you want to go to the falls, then back, and not use the full loop, go left.  The climb down and back out is easier.  If you want to do the full loop, go right.

We did the full loop, and went right.  The trails slowly descends down through the woods to the falls.  The trail is very rocky with lots of roots and travels through a lot of rhododendrons.  You'll eventually hike alongside a small creek, with some small cascades, and emerge shortly after at Buckeye Falls. 

The hike there is .5 miles and moderate to strenuous.

Buckeye Creek Falls

Buckeye Creek Falls isn't as majestic as Looking Glass or Whitewater Falls, but it's really a very photogenic and beautiful waterfall.  Buckeye Falls is about 15' - 20' foot high and flows over an angled cascade into the creek below.

A bridge is built across the creek to make the creek crossing easier and provides exceptional views of the falls.  If you want to get up closer, cross the bridge, and head to the base of the Falls to the left.   Just be careful, the rocks are slick.

After visiting the Falls, you can either head back the way you came, or continue following the trail around the loop.  We really recommend doing this, as the trail follows the creek above the falls, and provides some really pretty scenes along the creek.

The hike back up the steeper portion of the trail is a good workout, but not too long.

We really enjoyed this hike, and it would make for a great family hike.  We did the hike in about an hour, and that included time spent at the Falls taking photos and videos.    This is a really nice hike with a beautiful waterfall and we highly recommended if you're in and around Beech Mountain NC.

1- Crabtree Falls

Currently closed due to the Blue Ridge Parkway closures in this area.

Our personal favorite autumn waterfall, and it shows up on many waterfall "top" lists, is Crabtree Falls off the Blue Ridge Parkway, at MP339.5. Crabtree Falls is a beautiful and dramatic 70 foot cascading waterfall. Many consider Crabtree Falls off the Blue Ridge Parkway, at MP339.5, to be one of the most photogenic waterfalls because of its nearly perfect lighting, heavy water flow, and surrounding foliage.

The surrounding foliage, especially during the fall, coupled with this beautiful waterfall, makes for a magical combination, and some amazing fall photos.

Accessing the waterfall requires a hike, but it's a really nice one.

2 - Soco Falls

Soco Falls is a dual waterfall that cascades 120 feet into the rocky creek below. Soco Falls is visible from a wood observation deck. The trail to the deck is short, but moderate in difficulty. A better view of the falls is from the base, but this is a strenuous decent down a steep bank that requires the use of ropes.

Soco Falls is beautiful during any season, but because of the surrounding foliage, and many rhododendron, it is exceptionally beautiful in the fall. Soco Falls is located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Maggie Valley NC and Cherokee.

3 - Second Falls (Lower Falls) at Graveyard Fields

A very popular and photogenic waterfall is Second Falls (also called Lower Falls), at Graveyard Fields (MP418.5) on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our favorite fall photograph of this waterfall is shown above, and visitors can capture this same photo roadside from the Blue Ridge Parkway, at around MP418.   

For closer shots, you can park at Graveyard Fields, and hike down to the base of the waterfall. Graveyards Fields is an exceptionally beautiful area during the Fall, and one of the earliest places on the parkway, and in the Blue Ridge Mountains to change colors.

4 - Whitewater Falls

Being the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies, Whitewater falls is a really a sight to see, especially when surrounded by beautiful and brilliant Fall colors.

Whitewater Falls is located near Sapphire NC, and is 411 feet in total length. The waterfall has an easily accessible viewing platform, but for better views, you can walk further down the stairs and decking, and even hike to the base of the falls.

During the Fall, the surrounding foliage beautifully frames the waterfall, and provides for stunning photo opportunities.

5 - Triple Falls in Dupont State Forest 

Triple Falls in Dupont State Forest, near Brevard NC, is an exceptionally pretty waterfall, with 3 separate cascades.  Triple Falls is also featured in the blockbuster movie, The Hunger Games. The falls are 120 foot tall, and easily accessible along the Dupont Waterfalls trail.

The dense foliage surrounds the falls, offers excellent framing, especially during fall. Dupont also features several other waterfalls and hiking trails, making it a wonderful Fall day trip location.

6 - Abrams's Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

One of the most popular waterfalls and hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is Abrams Falls, located along the loop road through Cades Cove..

While not big, Abrams Falls makes up for its size in power, with heavy water flow. The water flow causes a beautiful mist to spray off the falls. The falls, mist, and fall colors make for gorgeous photo compositions.

The hike out is 5 miles round-trip and moderate to strenuous. The hike is really nice, offering a mixture of creek side hiking, scenic views, and scenic points of interest.

7 - Dry Falls

Dry Falls, near Sapphire NC and roadside off Highway 64, is a beautiful and heavy flowing waterfall. Dry Falls is one of the very few Blue Ridge Mountain waterfalls that you can walk behind.

Dry Falls is viewable from the parking area, using an accessible viewing platform. You can also walk down to the Falls, behind it, and past it, to the other side as well.

Dry Falls or beautiful during the Fall because of the surrounding foliage, and heavy and majestic water flows.

8 - Lower Sam Branch Falls

Lower Sam Branch Falls is one of three waterfalls located just off Highway 215 in North Carolina. Lower Sam Branch Falls is exceptionally pretty during fall, because of the way it "catches" the leaves, and surrounds itself in fall colors.

Reaching the Falls requires climbing up a steep, but fairly short ridge, but the walk to the waterfall after this is easy.

9 - Mouse Creek Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Mouse Creek Falls is located in the Big Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The waterfall is on Big Creek Trail, about 1/4 of a mile past very popular Midnight Hole.  

Mouse Creek Falls is exceptionally pretty and photogenic, especially when surrounded by fall colors and decorated with fall leaves on the rocks. This is really an under-rated waterfall that offers some exceptional compositions.  

To reach the lower portion of the falls, you'll need to scramble down a very steep trail. To get even closer, you'll need to wade through Big Creek, which, depending on flow, can be challenging if not dangerous.

Fortunately, excellent compositions are visible from the top and bottom, without having to cross Big Creek.

10 - Indian Creek Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Indian Creek Falls is one of 3 waterfalls along the waterfall loop in the Deep Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Deep Creek is located just outside of Bryson City NC.

Indian Creek Falls is one of our top picks because of being easy to access, but also due to it catching the falling leaves, and decorating itself with fall colors, as you can see above.

Deep Creek is also a beautiful Fall hike, and you get to see two other easy to access waterfalls as well. Visiting Indian Creek Falls is a win all around!

11 - Anna Ruby Falls, Georgia

One of the most, if not the most, popular waterfalls in the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, is Anna Ruby Falls. This is true during the fall, when the surrounding foliage and the falls themselves are covered with fall colors.

We put Anna Ruby Falls on our list because of the ability to take a long shot of the Falls, and capture tons of beautiful color, as seen in the photo below, by Kelly Verdeck.

Anna Ruby is two falls in one, with one fall being 153 feet and the other 50 feet. Anna Ruby Falls is in Unicoi State Park, and accessible from a trail. A fee is required to enter, and the trail is 1/2 mile and paved.

Getting to Living Waters and the Trailhead

Living Waters is located 9 miles south on Highway 215 from the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, in a community called Balsam Grove.  You'll see the Living waters buildings on your right.  Drive down just past the buildings, and you'll see pull-over parking on your right.   Additional parking is available across the road and also on down.

The trailhead down is just south of the pull-over parking, and past the mill building.   You'll see both Mill Shoals Falls, and French Broad Falls from the trail as you are coming down.   The trail down to Cathedral Falls goes to the left.

Mill Shoals Falls and French Broad Falls

As you come down the beginning of the trailhead, you immediately see the absolutely stunning twin falls of Mill Shoals and French Broad Falls.   Even better?  Mill Shoals falls sits directly below a beautiful historic and bright red grist mill, that is part of the ministry.

Both falls are about 15-20 foot high, and the pools below the falls are the intersection of Shoal Creek and the north fork of the french board river.  

The scene makes for some gorgeous photo opportunities.   The falls and pools below it, are a common swimming area for kids and adults.  There are lots of rocks and boulders to hang out on, and some shallow water for younger kids as well.   These two falls will be the highlight of your visit.

Cathedral Falls, and two other un-named waterfalls

From the twin falls, head back towards the parking area, and you'll see a trail heading to your right along the creekside.   Follow this trail down about 1/4 - 1/2 mile to Cathedral Falls (also called Bird Rock Falls)

While hiking along this easy trail, you'll cross a number of bridges, and pass a few small trails going down to two other very nice waterfalls.   You'll also pass by a beautiful overlook, and a small cave area that is used by the ministry for counseling and campfires.   

The trail follows the creek down, and you'll find yourself hiking through lots of Rhododendron, which form a tunnel around you.  The trail is really pretty pretty, and well maintained by the Ministry.

The last portion of the trail to Cathedral falls goes down a large rock to the creek.  Be careful here, as the rock can be slick.  Cathedral Falls will be to your right and a very tall rocky cliff directly in front of you.

Looking Glass Falls, Pisgah National Forest NC

Looking Glass Falls is named after Looking Glass Rock, as the creek the Falls is on is also called Looking Glass Creek, which flows past Looking Glass Rock.  

Looking Glass Rock is a very large Mountain/Rock, visible from of the Parkway.  During the winter, it's rock faces often get covered with ice, giving the appearance of a "looking glass", especially in the early mornings.

Looking Glass Falls is located in the Cradle of Forestry area of Pisgah National Forest, near Brevard NC.   This area was previously part of Biltmore Estate, and was sold off to the federal government after George Vanderbilt's passing.   Logging Railroads used to come right by the waterfalls.

Looking Glass Falls is nearly roadside.  The parking area is alongside Highway 276, and often full during peak season.   Be prepared to walk a bit up to the falls.

From the parking lot , you can get a nice view of the falls without having to walk down any stairs, making this handicap accessible.  For a better view. walk down the short flight of stairs to the observation deck.  Here's the view from the deck:

From the deck, you can climb down onto the rocks, and get to the bottom of the falls, which is a popular place for wading and swimming during the summer.  

Going down below the falls is a popular place for photographers, and provides the best view of the falls and of the Looking Glass Creek, as you can see in the photo below.  

Mornings are not a good time for photos at Looking Glass, as the sun comes up directly behind the Falls.  You'll want to visit during very early morning, late afternoon, or preferably on a cloudy day.   

During the summer, the creek area below the falls is often full of families and children, wading, swimming and playing the water.  Just be very careful, the rocks can be slick and people have gotten injured here from falling.

Looking Glass Falls is a gorgeous 50 foot waterfall that should definitely be on your list of things to see while visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.    Looking Glass Falls is open year-round for viewing.

Looking Glass Falls in the Movies!

Some of you may recognize this waterfall from the blockbuster movie Hacksaw Ridge.   To our knowledge, this is the only documented appearance of this waterfall in a Hollywood movie, but tell us in the comments if you know of others.

• Sliding Rock is just a short drive up the road, and visiting both makes for a great day outing.  
• Moore Cove Falls - While you need to hike, it's not too long, easy, and the falls are beautiful.  You can stand under them.
• Cedar Rock Falls, Upper Cedar Rock Falls, and Grogan Creek Falls - All three falls are along a really nice hiking trail into Pisgah National Forest.

Features: Popular destination in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A strong flowing waterfall and a great hike.

Directions: Drive 4.8 miles along the one-way Cades Cove Loop Road. Just after crossing a creek on a small bridge, turn right onto the gravel Abrams Falls Rd through a pasture area. You'll soon reach a large parking area for the trailhead. The trailhead is at the far end, where the woods begin.

Hiking to Abrams Falls

The hike to Abrams Falls is an out and back hike. The hike to Abrams Falls itself is 2.5 miles, then 2.5 back to the parking area, making the total round trip length about 5 miles.

The hike is moderate, with a few ups and downs. The ups provide some short but significant elevation gain. There are three, and the third is the largest, and will take you to a rocky ridge with nice views. From there, it's all downhill to Abrams Falls.

Be aware that the trail is very rocky and full of roots, so you will want to keep at eye on your footing to avoid tripping.

The trail begins just after the trail sign, at a bridge crossing. The first section of the trail is creek side and relatively flat.  After crossing the bridge, go left to Abrams Falls. For most of the trail, you'll follow the creek.   

There are a number of access points to the creek on the trail side, and they are worth exploring. Be sure to keep an eye out for Otter that were released here some years ago.

The trail follows a ridge that is often very high above the creek. While the trail isn't exceptionally narrow, it's narrow enough that if you are hiking with children, you'll want to keep them close, and away from the edge. A fall or slip from here could be deadly.

At the 2.5 mile mark, a small and typical log footbridge will go to the left. Take this bridge and side trail to Abrams Falls; you'll be able to clearly hear it at this point. You'll arrive at the small "beach" area, surrounded by a number of large rock areas for viewing and photographing the waterfall.

Abrams Falls

Abrams Falls itself is only 20-25 foot tall, so not a tall waterfall compared to many others in the area.   What does make that Abrams Falls stand out is the amount of water rushing over it.  In fact, Abrams Falls has more water rushing over it, than any other waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  

The pool at the bottom of the falls is deep and large. While you will often see people swimming here, and the pool is certainly very inviting, we STRONGLY recommend not swimming here. Due to the water volume, there are very strong currents, and under-toe. Under the water are many "traps", that have led to 21 water-related deaths since 1971.

Abrams Falls Trail is one of the busiest trails in the National Park and receives over 1000 visitors a day during peak season. We highly recommend hiking this trail early in the morning to avoid the crowds, or on a weekday.  This will also allow you to avoid the common traffic backups in Cades Cove that can often cause you to sit idle in traffic for hours.

After visiting the Falls, you'll head back to the parking lot the same way you arrived.

This has been a bucket list hike for us, and while we enjoyed it, we hiked it during prime fall season, and while gorgeous, there were far too many people for us. We'll go back, but will hike it during the off season to avoid the crowds.

Definitely a great hike, just be sure to come prepared with the day hiking essentials, hike safely, and as always, leave no trace.
