Our Video

In our video, we take you along our walk through the Dahlia Ridge Trail System so you can see what it’s actually like on the ground, including the Mill Pond area and some of the quieter wooded sections. We hike a whole loop around and though the HCC campus.

Hit play to hike it with us, get a feel for the terrain and trail vibe, and decide which loops you want to tackle when you go. If you’re local, it’s a great “quick outdoor fix” spot when you don’t have time for a longer drive or bigger hike.

Getting to the Dahlia Ridge Trails

Located in Clyde, NC, the Dahlia Ridge Trail System is incredibly easy to access, but because it is located on an active college campus, knowing exactly where to park is key.

Where to Park:There are two primary ways to access the trail system depending on which section you want to tackle first:

• Primary Parking (Main Entrance): As you enter the main HCC campus on Sawmill Drive, take your very first left into the parking lot. This is a central spot that puts you in close proximity to the main trail kiosks and the campus's famous Mill Pond.
• Secondary Parking: For a slightly different approach, you can continue past Sawmill Drive on Jones Cove Road and turn left onto Armory Drive. There is a smaller parking area on the far side of the Mill Pond that offers a quick connection to the trail network.

Any white-marked parking spot is open to the public. Do not park in yellow, blue, or purple spaces.

Finding the Trailhead: Once you park at the main lot on Sawmill Drive, look for the large wooden trail kiosks near the Hemlock building. These provide a full map of the system. The trails are well-marked with color-coded blazes, but we recommend snapping a photo of the map before you head into the more wooded sections.

Restrooms: Public restrooms are located at the Ironwood facility, near the millpond and smaller parking area.  Addtionally, HCC building restrooms are open to the public during school hours. This does not apply to HEC (Haywood Early College).

Know Before You Go

While the Dahlia Ridge Trail System is located on the Haywood Community College campus, the college graciously keeps these trails open to the public. It is a wonderful community resource, but do keep in mind that since it is a school, you'll want to be mindful of students and campus activities.

The trails are also pet-friendly, provided your four-legged hiking partners stay on a leash. It’s a perfect spot for a local dog walk that feels a bit more adventurous than a standard sidewalk stroll.

Hiking the Dahlia Ridge Loop: Our Experience

While you can jump on the trail system from several points on campus, Jenn and I started at the official starting point near the Hemlock Building and the Mill Pond. We began by walking around the Mill Pond—which is easily the highlight and most scenic attraction of the entire system—before catching the Mill Pond Connector. You’ll find this near the small parking area by the Ironwood facility.

From there, the trail transitions from a casual stroll to a true hike. You’ll cross the road and a small bridge, heading straight into the woods. We followed the winding Copperhead Trail, which features a series of switchbacks. This was the only section where we experienced a real workout with some elevation gain, though we would still categorize the overall hike as easy to moderate.

The Copperhead Trail eventually feeds into the Kingfisher Trail. This section feels like a deep-woods escape, with natural paths that can be a bit muddy after a rain. Finally, we connected to the Bobcat Trail, the main campus loop, which transitioned back into paved sidewalks and flat gravel as we headed back toward the parking area. Our total loop was about 1.5 miles.

The variety of the terrain is what makes this loop so engaging. In one afternoon, we experienced:

• The Scenery: The Mill Pond is incredibly peaceful and a must-see for photographers.
• The Art: As you loop through the main campus, keep your eyes peeled for the unique art installations. We especially enjoyed the wireframe bobcat and the resonating bell.
• The Terrain: It’s rare to find a trail that seamlessly blends flat gravel, rugged forest floor, and paved campus walkways.

Tips for a Great Hike

Here are a few tips we learned during our visit and hike that will help make your visit more enjoyable:

• Footwear: Special hiking gear isn't strictly needed for the campus sections, but if you're planning on hiking the more remote areas like Copperhead or Kingfisher, good hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended as these natural trails can be muddy.
• Water: We recommend bringing some water along, especially for the wooded switchback sections.
• Navigation: The trails are well-marked, but we still recommend downloading the hiking trails map to your phone for easy reference.
• Safety: For safety, there are emergency response markers all through the trail with unique codes. In the event of an emergency, these allow first responders to accurately locate you in the woods.
• Leave No Trace: The trails are open to the public, so please always practice the principles of Leave No Trace, so locals and visitors can continue to enjoy these fantastic trails.

Our Take

Jenn and I really enjoyed our time on the Dahlia Ridge trails. To be fair, these trails aren't as remote or rugged as some mountain hikes, like you would find in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

You also won't find a significant point of interest like a breathtaking waterfall. BUT, they are a great option for local hiking, walking and running.  Much like the popular trails at Lake Junaluska.

It is definitely worth the short drive from Waynesville. It is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy some local art, and get some exercise in a beautiful, quiet setting.

Mehaffey Tree Farm

Address: 24 Corner Drive, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: Now Open for 2025

Mehaffey Tree Farm is one of those small, family-run places that instantly makes you feel at home. Located in the Jonathan Creek area, this farm grows beautiful Fraser firs that are healthy, full, and rich in color — perfect for that classic mountain Christmas look.

Visitors can choose to cut their own tree or pick from a variety of pre-cut options. The owners are known for their friendly, personal touch — they’ll chat with you about the farm’s history, share tips on keeping your tree fresh, and help secure it for the ride home.

It’s a simple, no-frills experience in the best possible way — quiet, authentic, and centered on the joy of finding the perfect tree. They also serve hot chocolate and hot cider, which is wonderful on a cold day!

WNC Landscaping and Christmas Trees

Locations: 624 Hemphill Road and 2436 Jonathan Creek Road, Waynesville, NC

Opening: Friday, November 29th

A true local favorite, WNC Landscaping and Christmas Trees has been helping families find their perfect holiday tree for decades. Their farms, located on Hemphill Road and Jonathan Creek Road, are surrounded by stunning mountain views that make the experience extra special.

Visitors can wander through rows of fragrant Fraser firs, ranging from small tabletop trees to towering 12-foot beauties. You can cut your own tree or choose a fresh pre-cut one — either way, the staff is always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading. Besides trees, they often have handmade wreaths, garlands, and greenery for sale.

Boyd Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 445 Boyd Farm Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: Now Open for 2025

If there is one Haywood County tree farm that truly captures the magic of Christmas in the North Carolina mountains, it is Boyd Mountain. This century-old family farm is a beloved local tradition, drawing visitors from all over the Southeast each holiday season, and for good reason.

When we visited this year (2025), they had just opened for the season, and the excitement was already in the air. The farm is beautifully decorated and offers so much more than just trees. There are numerous photo ops, plenty of fresh wreaths, stands, and Christmas decorating options, and even a food truck serving up tasty treats. We also found Santa greeting visitors and taking photos with families, which made it especially fun for the kids.

We met owner David Boyd, who welcomed us warmly and shared a little about the farm. We hopped on a wagon ride up to the top of the property, and the views were absolutely incredible. The hills are covered with rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs, and there are trees as far as you can see.

Boyd Mountain offers more than Christmas trees. It offers a full Christmas experience that brings families back year after year. Everywhere we looked, people were smiling, taking photos, and enjoying the mountain atmosphere. We had a wonderful time ourselves, and it is easy to see why this farm has become such a cherished holiday destination in Western North Carolina.

Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 280 Setzer Drive, Canton, NC

Opening: Pre-Tagging Beginning November 1. Schedule a time to pick up your tree then. They expect to sell out with pre tagging.

Tucked away in the scenic Dutch Cove community near Canton, this family-run farm has become a quiet favorite for those who love a relaxed, down-home Christmas tree experience. The drive to Dutch Cove is beautiful, winding through peaceful mountain countryside that already feels like a step back in time.

The farm specializes in premium Fraser firs grown right on-site, and you’ll find a wide range of sizes and shapes — ideal for families decorating cozy cabins or larger homes. The owners are incredibly welcoming and often take time to help visitors find exactly what they’re looking for.

Along with trees, Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm also sells handmade wreaths and garlands, making it a great one-stop shop for your holiday greenery.

Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 756 Hemphill Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: November 22, Monday – Thursday 10am-4pm and Friday – Sunday 9am-5pm

Located in the beautiful Jonathan Creek area just outside Maggie Valley, Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm offers one of the most scenic and peaceful spots in Haywood County to find your Christmas tree. The farm is surrounded by rolling hills, open meadows, and mountain views that make the experience feel straight out of a holiday postcard.

Visitors can stroll through rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs and take their time finding the right one — whether you prefer to cut your own or choose from a selection of freshly pre-cut trees. The owners are friendly and welcoming, always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading your tree for the trip home.

One of the most photographed landmarks here is their beautiful red barn painted with the classic 7-Up logo — a bright splash of color against the green trees and mountain backdrop. It’s a favorite photo spot for families, and it adds a touch of nostalgic charm to the whole experience.

Nesbitt Tree Farm

Address: 333 Sunset Ridge Road, Clyde, NC

When: Now Open for 2025

A short drive from downtown Waynesville, Nesbitt Tree Farm is another great local gem. The farm is easy to access and offers high-quality Fraser firs that are carefully trimmed and maintained.

The Nesbitt family has been growing Christmas trees for many years, and their experience shows — every tree seems perfectly shaped and fragrant. They also sell fresh wreaths and garlands, often made right there on the farm.

It’s a wonderful option if you’re looking for a less crowded, laid-back place to pick your tree while still getting that authentic mountain farm feel.

Rock Cottage Farm Christmas Trees

Address: 430 Carswell Rd, Canton, NC 28716

Located just outside Canton, Rock Cottage Farm is a wonderful family-owned and operated farm offering pre-cut Fraser firs at budget-friendly prices. While they don’t offer choose-and-cut, they make up for it with a warm, festive atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.

Visitors can pick out a beautiful, freshly cut Fraser fir and then spend some time exploring the Christmas Barn, filled with handmade gifts, ornaments, and crafts all created by the family. You can sip on hot chocolate, enjoy fresh popcorn, and even get your face painted — a big hit with kids and the young at heart.

There’s also a cozy fire to warm up by, and friendly animals around the farm to visit — including a sweet, gentle donkey who quickly became one of our favorites.

We really enjoyed our visit here and meeting the wonderful family behind Rock Cottage Farm. It’s a heartwarming reminder that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Plan Your Visit

Most Christmas tree farms near Waynesville open around Thanksgiving and stay open through mid-December. Hours and availability can vary depending on weather and demand, so it’s always a good idea to check each farm’s website or Facebook page before heading out.

Bring warm clothes, gloves, and boots — the fields can be muddy, especially after a mountain rain. Most farms cut your tree for you and will strap it to your car for you.    

Many farms also have farm stands selling wreaths, garlands, and local goods, so bring some cash just in case.

Tips for Finding, Picking, and Bringing Your Tree Home

1. Choose the right size for your space.
Before heading out, measure the height of your ceiling and remember to leave room for your tree stand and topper. Many people overestimate how tall their room is — and end up trimming several feet off once they get home!

2. Look for color and shape.
A healthy Fraser fir should have rich green needles, a pleasant scent, and a strong, even shape. Walk around your tree to check all sides — especially if it will be placed in a central spot.

3. Test for freshness.
Gently tug on a few branches or tap the tree on the ground. If only a few needles fall, it’s fresh. Fraser firs are known for holding their needles well, so this test should give you confidence in your pick.

4. Ask about shaking and baling.
Most local farms will shake loose needles out of your tree and wrap it in netting to make it easier to transport. This simple step helps keep your car and home cleaner.

5. Give it a fresh cut at home.
Once you’re home, trim about an inch off the bottom before placing your tree in water. This allows it to absorb water more easily and stay fresh longer.

6. Keep it hydrated.
Check the water level daily — trees can drink a surprising amount, especially during the first few days indoors. Never let the base dry out, or the trunk will seal and stop taking in water.

7. Enjoy the moment.
Make a day of it — bring a thermos of hot chocolate, take photos, and enjoy the mountain scenery. Picking your own Christmas tree is about the experience as much as the tree itself.

Where is Wilkesboro?

Wilkesboro is located in northwestern North Carolina along US-421, about 30 minutes south of Boone and just over an hour northwest of Winston-Salem. The Yadkin River separates Wilkesboro from its sister city, North Wilkesboro, and together they make up what locals call “The Wilkesboros.”

Downtown Wilkesboro is easy to reach and simple to explore, with most attractions, restaurants, and shops within a short walk of one another. The town’s small-scale layout makes it ideal for a relaxed weekend visit — you can park once and spend the day discovering its historic buildings, local businesses, and friendly community atmosphere.

Why Visit?

Wilkesboro blends outdoor fun, real Appalachian history, and a friendly downtown that just keeps getting better the more you explore. A few reasons we think it’s worth a trip:

• Outdoor access that’s actually close — lake, trails, river, and bike parks within a short drive
• Deep musical roots and festival energy throughout the year
• A walkable downtown with independent shops, public art, and family-friendly events
• Easy hop to Boone/Blowing Rock while paying far less for lodging and food
• Great restaurants, bars, coffee shops and more.

Things to Do

Most of the best things to do in Wilkesboro are centered right around downtown. The area is walkable, welcoming, and full of character, with restored historic buildings, local shops, and plenty of spots to relax and explore.

During our visit, we toured the Wilkes Heritage Museum and the Historic Wilkes County Jail, both offering a fascinating look at the town’s past and the people who helped shape it. The museum complex alone is worth the stop — it’s packed with local history, exhibits, and even a few surprises.

Downtown Wilkesboro is also home to a growing collection of boutiques, antique stores, and galleries. We enjoyed visiting several different shops with clothing, home decor, gifts, and of course, southern charm. You’ll also find a few great antique stores and locally owned shops scattered around Main Street that are perfect for browsing.

Throughout the year, downtown comes alive with events, festivals, and live music.

Where to Stay

Our Pick

During our visit, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Wilkesboro, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The rooms were clean, quiet, and comfortable; the staff was friendly; and the location made it easy to get around town.

They have an outdoor pool, full exercise room, and complimentary breakfast. We’d definitely stay here again on a future visit.

Other Options

Wilkesboro also has a few other solid hotel options, including the Hampton Inn Wilkesboro and Quality Inn & Suites, both close to dining and shopping along US-421.

If you prefer more space or a home-like stay, there are also vacation rentals available in and around Wilkesboro and nearby North Wilkesboro. These range from small in-town apartments to cozy countryside cabins just a few minutes from downtown.

Planning Your Visit

Best time to visit

Spring brings wildflowers and comfortable temps for hiking and biking. Summer is prime for the lake and river. Fall delivers orchard season and color in the nearby mountains, with easy day trips up to the Boone area. Winter is quieter and a good time for budget travelers.

How long to stay

A weekend covers downtown, the museum/jail, a lake day, and a couple of meals out. Add a third night if you want more trail or outdoor time.

Getting around

Parking in Wilkesboro is easy and free throughout downtown. Most of what you’ll want to see is close together, so you can park once and explore on foot. The streets are walkable, and it’s a pleasant area to spend a few hours visiting shops, restaurants, and historic sites. If you’re venturing beyond downtown or visiting both Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro, everything is only a short drive apart.

Step Back in Time at the Wilkes Heritage Museum

One of the highlights of our visit was touring the Wilkes Heritage Museum in downtown Wilkesboro. 

We had the pleasure of meeting George Childers, the Board Chairman, who guided us through the museum. George’s passion for local history was contagious — he not only walked us through the various rooms and exhibits, but also shared fascinating stories about the people, places, and events that helped shape Wilkes County.

After exploring the main museum, George walked us over to two historic buildings on the property: the Old Wilkes County Jail and the Robert Cleveland House, which dates back to the 1770s. Walking through those spaces gave us a real sense of what life was like in Wilkesboro centuries ago.

The museum is full of treasures, but a few exhibits really stood out to us:

• The Old Jail – This former county jail is still intact, complete with its original cells and the living quarters for the jailers. Walking through, we could almost imagine what it must have been like for inmates housed there years ago.
• The NASCAR Section – Wilkes County has deep racing roots, and this exhibit highlights legendary driver Junior Johnson. Seeing his story displayed was both inspiring and a reminder of how much this area has contributed to stock car racing.
• Medical and Dental Room – Filled with vintage equipment, this exhibit gave us a glimpse into what healthcare looked like decades ago. Some of the tools looked more intimidating than helpful!
• Classroom Schoolhouse – Stepping into this recreated one-room schoolhouse felt like stepping back in time. With old desks, chalkboards, and books, it gave us a real sense of how children in Wilkes County learned generations ago.
• Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame – We also loved exploring this section, which honors the musicians and traditions that shaped the sound of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From bluegrass pioneers to gospel legends, it’s a moving tribute to the region’s musical roots.

The Wilkes Heritage Museum is located at 100 East Main Street in Wilkesboro. Parking is available nearby in downtown Wilkesboro.

Indulge at Suck It Up Milkshakes

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you can’t miss Suck It Up Milkshakes in downtown North Wilkesboro. This spot takes milkshakes to a whole new level — ours came loaded with whipped cream, sprinkles, cotton candy, and over the top toppings that turn your shake into an edible work of art.

We tried two of their creations: the Blondie, a strawberry shake topped with an ice cream cone, strawberry wafer cookies, and strawberry drizzle; and the Butterlicious, a decadent mix of cookie butter, Biscoff cookies, and caramel drizzle, all topped with a snickerdoodle cookie. Both were just as fun as they were delicious — rich, creamy, and so over the top that we couldn’t stop smiling as we tried to figure out how to even start eating them.

The shop itself is in an old gas station, and outdoor picnic tables are available for seating. Beyond milkshakes, they also serve boba tea, ice cream nachos, cookies, and more — but let’s be honest, it’s those wild shakes that steal the show.

If you’re downtown and craving something sweet, Suck It Up Milkshakes is an absolute must. Just make sure to bring your appetite (and grab lots of napkins).

Taste and Explore with Blue Ridge Food Tours

One of the absolute highlights of our time in Wilkesboro was going on a Wilkesboro food tour with Blue Ridge Food Tours, led by our wonderful guide, Mya. The tour was the perfect mix of food, history, and local flavor.

As we walked through town, Mya shared stories about Wilkesboro, the surrounding mountains, and the South — everything from quirky bits of history to fascinating details about the food we were sampling. It felt like we were experiencing the town in a way we never could have on our own.

And the food? Incredible. Each stop offered something unique:

• Dom Bakeries – We kicked things off with fresh-baked treats, including pizza and apple donuts.
• Tripp’s Mercantile – Their Limoncello Cake from Amalfi's was light, sweet, and unforgettable. We also enjoyed shopping and exploring the store while there as well.
• 6th and Main – A local favorite, offering delicious bites in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We sampled their spicy pecan glazed chicken, with mashed potatoes and a glass of wine.
• Key City Antiques – Not only did we browse vintage treasures, but we also tried old-fashioned sodas that took us straight back in time.
• Cinder Bistro – Hands down, some of the best BBQ and beer we’ve ever had. We enjoyed their pulled chicken, pulled pork, and brisket along with some smoked collards and a flight of local craft beers. 
• C’est La Vin – A stop for wine lovers, where we enjoyed a charcuterie board and wine tasting that felt both refined and relaxed.
• The Lost Wombat – Our final stop, where we indulged in a hearty Aussie Burger and a moonshine lemonade. To top it off, the owner gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic movie theater next door (see below), where we even got to see pieces of the original film reel from Star Wars: A New Hope.

From start to finish, the food tour gave us a real taste of Wilkesboro — both literally and figuratively. We really enjoyed the balance of trying amazing food, walking through the charming downtown, and learning more about the area’s history and culture.

Tours usually run about 3 hours, include multiple stops, and are best booked in advance online. Tour cost is $65 per person, and you can upgrade to alcoholic beverages for an additional $14. You can check their schedule and reserve tickets directly through their website.

Sip and Savor at Merle’s Craft Cocktails

After a day of exploring, we made our way to Merle’s Craft Cocktails in downtown Wilkesboro, and it quickly became one of our favorite stops. The last time we had cocktails to this level, were during a visit to San Diego. The atmosphere here is local, relaxed and stylish. A perfect spot for unwinding with friends or starting a night out.

We sampled a few different drinks, but the standout for us was the Smoked Old Fashioned. Merle’s offers a couple of variations on the classic Old Fashioned, but the smoked version was hands-down our favorite — smooth, bold, and beautifully balanced with just the right amount of smokiness. Watching it prepared and then enjoying that first sip was an experience!

What made Merle’s even more memorable was the people. We chatted with the owner LB, who was not only incredibly friendly but also passionate about her craft. Every cocktail on the menu is made with thought, care, and an aim to give guests something truly special.  

Merle’s is clearly a local favorite, with plenty of regulars mixing in alongside visitors. It’s the perfect spot to sip on some fantastic cocktails, socialize, and soak in the Wilkesboro vibe.

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy high-quality drinks and good conversation, Merle’s should be at the top of your list. We'll definitely be back.

Pick-Your-Own Fun at Perry Lowe Orchards

No trip to Wilkes County in late summer or fall would be complete without a stop at Perry Lowe Orchards. This family-run orchard has been welcoming visitors for more than 6 generations, and it shows in the warm, welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere.

We hopped on one of the tractor rides that take you up into the orchards and spent time picking a variety of apples right from the trees. The scenery from the fields was beautiful — rolling hills, crisp air, and the satisfying crunch of apples fresh off the branch.

The fields are well labeled, and there are even apple washing stations so you can taste your apples and decide which ones you want to bring home. We've been a number of North Carolina apple orchards, and this was our first time seeing this feature, and we loved it.

Back at the farm stand, we sampled some of their delicious offerings: fresh-pressed cider, cider apples, and even icy cold apple slushies (which were a big hit on a warm afternoon). There was also merchandise, and other food items available as well.

This orchard is also very family-friendly, with activities that go far beyond apple picking. Kids (and adults too!) can enjoy the Super Mega Slide — Larry tried it and can confirm it’s just as fun as it looks. 

The slide is big with a number of different lanes. You grab a tube on the way up, and the staff at the top will lubricate the bottom, and help you slide down.  

There is also a giant jump pad, tractor-themed playground, and a bee train ride. For something extra unique, there’s even an apple cannon, where you can shoot apples at fun targets.

Perry Lowe Orchards is located just outside Wilkesboro and is open seasonally, from late summer through the fall. Hours vary depending on the harvest and activities, so it’s best to check their website before your visit. Admission is free; you simply pay for the apples and any extra activities you choose. Tractor rides and kids’ attractions may have a small additional fee.

Explore Downtown Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro

One of our favorite parts of the trip was simply spending time in downtown Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro.

Wilkesboro is kind of unique in that there are two towns literally right next to each other and separated by the Yadkin River. While the two towns are separate, they are treated as one. Wilkesboro was first, and North Wilkesboro came later when the railroad came through. Both have downtown areas to explore, with North Wilkesboro having the largest downtown area.

We did spend time in both and enjoyed them both. In this section, we'll feature our visit to downtown North Wilkesboro, as that is where many of the shops are located.

The historic main street of North Wilkesboro is lined with a mix of shops, cafes, and local businesses, all set against a backdrop of beautifully restored buildings that give the area so much character.

We strolled through town, popping into boutiques, antique stores, and specialty shops. A few of our favorite stops include:

• Key City Antiques - This large shop has antiques, collectibles, furniture, local items, and more. It's a treasure trove of vintage finds.
• Carolina Treasures on Main - a large antique shop full of unique gifts and antiques.

• Ivy Ridge Traditions - a boutique full of stylish clothing, home décor, and gifts that perfectly blend Southern charm with modern style. We picked up a few items to bring home with us!

Another must-see downtown is the historic Liberty Theater, which still stands as a reminder of Wilkesboro’s long-running love for film and entertainment. Even just admiring the marquee and building from the outside gave us a sense of nostalgia and history.  

Downtown also has some wonderful spots to pause and relax, whether that’s sipping coffee at Talia Espresso, grabbing a bite to eat, or just sitting outside and people-watching in the heart of town. We noticed how the area is continuing to grow, with new businesses opening alongside longtime favorites, giving it a lively but still small-town feel.

If you’re visiting Wilkesboro, make sure to allow time just to explore both downtown areas — it’s the best way to soak in the local charm and discover hidden gems.

Hike at Stone Mountain State Park

About 30 minutes from Wilkesboro, Stone Mountain State Park offers some of the most stunning outdoor scenery in the region. The park is named after its massive granite dome — a 600-foot rock face that towers above the surrounding forest — and it’s every bit as impressive in person as it sounds.

During our visit, we hiked the Stone Mountain Loop Trail, a 4.5-mile loop that takes you across the top of Stone Mountain and then down and around its base. The trail is a workout in spots, but absolutely worth it. As we made our way up, the views just kept getting better — sweeping panoramas of the Blue Ridge foothills and the dramatic granite dome stretching out before us.

On the back half of the trail, we followed paths through shaded forest and alongside streams and waterfalls. The sound of rushing water and the cool mist from the falls were a refreshing break after the climb. By the time we finished, we felt like we’d gotten the perfect mix of mountain views, forest trails, and peaceful water features all in one hike.

Stone Mountain State Park is about 30 minutes from Wilkesboro and offers more than 18 miles of hiking trails. The Stone Mountain Loop Trail is moderate to strenuous in difficulty, so be sure to bring plenty of water, good shoes, and allow at least 3–4 hours to complete it.

The park also features camping, trout fishing, climbing, and picnic areas, making it a great spot for a half-day or full-day trip. There’s no entrance fee, but parking areas can fill up on weekends, so plan to arrive early if you’re visiting during peak season.

Explore the Downtown Shops and Art Galleries

One of our favorite things to do in Saluda was wandering through the downtown shops and galleries. Main Street may be small, but it’s packed with charm, creativity, and that easygoing mountain vibe that makes you want to stay awhile.

We visited during the 20th Annual Saluda Arts Festival, so there were plenty of people in town and all the shops were opening and inviting visitors in to look around. 

M. A. Pace General Store

We started at M.A. Pace General Store, a true step back in time. This place has been around since 1899 and still feels like an old-fashioned general store. You’ll find everything from hardware and dry goods to local honey and nostalgic gifts—plus plenty of history packed into every corner. While visiting, we even met the town Mayor, Tangie Morgan, who owns and runs the store.

Thompson's Grocery Store

Just down the street is the Historic Thompson Store, the oldest operating grocery store in North Carolina. It’s connected to Ward’s Grill, a local diner. The store carries a mix of grocery staples, gourmet foods, regional products, and unique items perfect for souvenirs or a picnic lunch.

River Dog Run

River Dog Run caught our eye with its selection of merchandise, including local art, soaps, candles, leather journals, art, furniture, and home decor. It’s a fun shop to explore.

The Gardener’s Cottage and The Brass Latch

We also enjoyed exploring The Gardener’s Cottage and The Brass Latch, which share a space and are owned by the same owner—offering two unique shopping experiences in one stop.

The shops blend garden-inspired decor with whimsical gifts, home goods, clothing, and much more. Both shops are full of merchandise with a curated feel and are the kind of shops you could easily spend an hour in.

eARThly Minds Gallery

Art lovers will enjoy eARThly Minds Gallery, where the owners showcase their own art alongside the work of other talented local creators. It’s a warm, welcoming space that really reflects the spirit of the Saluda arts scene and one of our favorite shops to browse.

Elm and Owl Art Gallery

We also visited Elm and Owl Art Gallery, one of the town’s newest additions, and were having their soft-opening. This gallery features a range of styles from regional and local artists and offers a fresh, contemporary feel compared to some of the more rustic shops.

Spring Creek Interiors blends mountain-style home decor with upscale design elements and furniture—worth a visit if you're looking to bring some mountain style home with you.

Visit the Saluda Tailgate Market

If you're in town on a Friday afternoon between May and October, make time to stop by the Saluda Tailgate Market. This small but lively market is a great way to get a taste of the local flavor—literally.

You’ll find fresh produce, baked goods, local meats, handmade crafts, and more—all from area farmers and artisans. It’s also a good spot to grab a snack, chat with locals, and pick up something unique to take home.

When we visited in May, there were a number of local vendors, including:

• Let It Be Flowers - A super cute flower truck  
• Appalachian Ways - selling Elderberry Syrup and herbs.
• Crafty Champster - Preserved fern handcrafted resin keychains, flower gifts, floral keychains and pressed flowers.
• Salt & Light Acres - Local Homestead offering goat's milk bath + body products, with minimal and clean ingredients
• Beagle Hill Honey - Providing fresh, local, raw honey to the community.
• Kinder Garden - Kinder Garden is a heartwarming community program where local residents donate seeds, plants, and gardening supplies to elementary school students. The kids learn by growing and caring for the plants, then share their harvest or plants back with the community—creating a full circle of learning, giving, and growing together.

The market has a relaxed, friendly vibe and reflects the community spirit that makes Saluda such a special place. Whether you're shopping or just browsing, it’s a fun and easy addition to your weekend plans.

Enjoy Great Local Food

Don’t let Saluda’s small size fool you—the food scene here is full of flavor and character. Whether you’re in the mood for a relaxed brunch with mountain views, a cozy cup of coffee, or a casual lunch downtown, this little town delivers.

During our visit, we sipped lattes at The Wakey Monkey, enjoyed a fresh and scenic breakfast at Newman’s,  grabbed a quick bite at K’s NY Pizza, and explored a few other local favorites, including the popular Purple Onion. From elevated Southern fare to family-owned diners, Saluda has a little something for everyone.

Grab a Coffee or a snack at the Wakey Monkey

If you’re looking for a good cup of coffee and a relaxed spot to hang out, The Wakey Monkey is the place to go in Saluda. We stopped in for breakfast one morning and were immediately drawn in by the cozy atmosphere and friendly vibe.

We ordered a couple of vanilla lattes and two breakfast sandwiches, all of which were freshly made and really hit the spot. The coffee was smooth, not too sweet, and made just right. The breakfast sandwiches were simple, hearty, and perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

Whether you’re grabbing a drink to-go or hanging around to enjoy the quiet charm of downtown, The Wakey Monkey makes a great stop. It’s also a solid place to recharge mid-afternoon with a snack, smoothie, or another round of caffeine.

Step Back in Time at the Saluda Historic Depot & Museum

If you're even remotely interested in trains, history, or just love learning about small-town roots, the Saluda Historic Depot & Museum is well worth a visit. Housed in a restored 1903 train depot right on Main Street, this small but thoughtfully curated museum tells the fascinating story of Saluda’s railroad past.

What makes it especially interesting is Saluda Grade—once the steepest mainline standard-gauge railroad grade in the U.S. The museum dives into how trains tackled the treacherous incline and the impact the railroad had on Saluda’s growth and economy.

Inside, you’ll find historic photographs, railway tools, artifacts, and even a non-working model train that replicates the full route. The volunteers here are friendly and full of knowledge—they’re happy to answer questions or share stories about the town’s railroading days.

We really enjoyed hearing about the history of the town, depot, and railroad line, along with seeing all the historic artifacts the museum has, including menus from Southern Railroad's dining cars!

It’s a great stop for families, history buffs, or anyone looking to better understand how this quiet mountain town came to be. Plus, it’s right in the heart of downtown, so it’s easy to pop in while exploring the shops.

Discover Local Art at Saluda Studios

Tucked just a short walk from Main Street and directly across from Green River BBQ, Saluda Studios is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates local art and creativity. The space is bright, welcoming, and filled with the work of regional artists—from paintings and photography to pottery, sculpture, and mixed media.

What makes Saluda Studios stand out is its focus on showcasing both established and emerging local talent. You’ll find pieces that reflect the mountain landscapes, culture, and personality of the region, often created by artists who live right in or around Saluda.

During our visit, we loved exploring the variety of styles and mediums. It’s not just a gallery—it feels more like a creative hub. If you're lucky, you might even catch an artist working on something new or hear the backstory behind a particular piece.

Saluda Studios showcases contemporary art inspired by the historic landscapes of Picturesque America. Featuring work from artists across the country, the gallery celebrates and supports the preservation of these iconic places through modern interpretations. With a rotating collection, each piece connects art, history, and conservation—offering you a chance to take home a meaningful piece that helps protect the places that inspire us all.

Whether you’re in the market for something special or just want to soak up some creative inspiration, Saluda Studios is a refreshing and authentic stop that adds even more depth to Saluda’s artistic side.

Experience the Saluda Arts Festival

We happened to be in town during the 20th Annual Saluda Arts Festival, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. This annual event brings Main Street to life with artists, music, food, and a great sense of community. It’s the kind of small-town festival that feels genuine and welcoming—and it draws some seriously talented artists from across the region.

To our surprise, it drew quite a crowd! Saluda was full of energy and really buzzing that Saturday.

Booths lined the street, showcasing everything from fine art and handmade jewelry to woodwork, pottery, photography, and more. We spent hours walking from booth to booth, talking with the artists, and admiring the variety of creative work on display.

Besides the art, the festival features live music, food trucks, and activities for kids—making it a fun event for all ages. The entire downtown transforms into a vibrant, walkable gallery, and it’s a great time to experience Saluda at its most lively.

If you’re planning a visit in May, we highly recommend timing your trip around the festival. It occurs on the third Saturday of each May. It’s a wonderful way to support local artists, experience the town’s creative spirit, and enjoy a laid-back, family-friendly day in the mountains.

Get Your Adrenaline Fix at The Gorge Zipline

If you’re looking to add a little adventure to your Saluda visit, The Gorge Zipline is the place to do it. Just a short drive from downtown, this zipline course takes you high above the Green River Gorge for one of the most thrilling experiences in the region.

We spent an afternoon zipping through the treetops, and it was an absolute blast. The course features 11 zip lines, three rappels, and a sky-bridge—all set in a stunning old-growth forest with sweeping views of the gorge below. It’s fast, fun, and surprisingly peaceful once you’re flying above the trees.

Our guides, Emma and Trey, were top-notch—professional, friendly, and clearly passionate about what they do. They made us feel completely safe while still keeping the experience super fun and relaxed.

If you want to record your adventure, they offer GoPros for rent, or you can bring your own - They just have to mount on your helmet.

If you’re craving a little adrenaline, The Gorge delivers. It’s an unforgettable way to experience the mountains from a whole new angle—and a great way to balance out a weekend of art, food, and small-town charm with some high-flying fun.

Check Out ¡Salud! Sip & Strum

One of the more unique experiences in Saluda is ¡Salud! Sip & Strum, a laid-back music and wine shop that invites you to do more than just listen—you’re encouraged to join in. This cozy spot combines live acoustic music, a carefully curated wine selection, and a welcoming, creative atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

What sets it apart is their “Sip & Strum” events, where visitors can pick up an instrument (or bring their own), sip wine, and play along—no experience needed. It’s relaxed, fun, and a great way to connect with both locals and other visitors.

Even if you’re not musically inclined, it’s worth stopping in to browse their selection of instruments, enjoy a glass of wine, and soak up the good vibes. ¡Salud! adds a fun, offbeat touch to Saluda’s arts and culture scene—and it’s the kind of experience you’ll talk about long after your trip.

Make a Weekend of It

We spent a full weekend in Saluda and still felt like there was more to explore. It’s the kind of town that invites you to slow down, unplug, and enjoy everything at your own pace. Between the food, the shops, the art, the ziplining, and the quiet mountain charm—it makes for a perfect getaway.

We stayed at The Orchard Inn, just a few minutes outside of downtown. It’s peaceful, surrounded by nature, and offers some of the best views in the area. The front porch (shown above) is the perfect spot for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine, and having Newman’s Restaurant right on site for breakfast and dinner was a huge plus.

Over the course of the weekend, we browsed downtown shops and galleries, attended the Saluda Arts Festival, grabbed coffee at The Wakey Monkey, dove into local history at the Saluda Historic Depot, explored art at Saluda Studios, and even went ziplining at The Gorge. We also made plenty of time for great meals at local restaurants—each one offering something a little different.

Saluda is easy to explore on foot, and the slower pace gives you time to really enjoy each experience. Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend, a fun girls’ trip, or a low-key mountain retreat with a bit of adventure, Saluda fits the bill.

We left feeling refreshed—and already planning our next visit to this wonderful small mountain town.   Spend a weekend, or longer, you won't regret it.

Photography Tips when Visiting

Saluda is full of photo-worthy moments, from historic downtown charm to mountain views and vibrant local art.  It's a fun town for street photography, given the railroad tracks, murals, and small details sprinkled around town.

Whether you're using a DSLR or just your phone, there are plenty of opportunities to capture the beauty and personality of this small mountain town.

Here are a few tips based on our own visit:

1. Get Up Early – The soft morning light along Main Street is perfect for capturing storefronts and architecture without crowds. It’s also a great time to shoot the fog or low clouds rolling over the nearby ridges if you're staying somewhere like the Orchard Inn. You'll also find very few cars and people, if you prefer those types of shots.

2. Use a Tripod for Scenic Shots – Especially helpful if you’re photographing landscapes or want to get that smooth, blurry water effect on nearby creeks or waterfalls. A compact travel tripod works great and won’t weigh you down.

Newman’s Restaurant at the Orchard Inn

Dining at Newman’s isn’t just a meal—it’s an experience, and one of the highlights of our weekend in Saluda. Located inside the Orchard Inn, this fine-dining spot offers a seasonal, four-course menu that’s as thoughtful as it is flavorful. The setting doesn’t hurt either: we enjoyed our dinner on the covered deck, surrounded by the quiet hush of the mountains and long-range views of the Blue Ridge rolling off into the distance.

We arrived a few minutes before our reservations. I wore slacks, a button-down shirt, nice shoes and a sports jacket. Jenn wore a casual dress and shoes.  

The evening began with some drinks from their full-service bar. They also have a great selection of red and white wines as well.

We began our meal with a Grilled Romaine Caesar Salad—simple but beautifully done, with just the right balance of char and crunch. For the second course, we split two appetizers: the Baked Eggplant Lesbos and a dish of pan-seared shrimp over fried green tomatoes. Both appetizers were packed with flavor, but the shrimp stole the show—crispy, creamy, and perfectly seasoned.

For our main course, we chose the filet and the salmon. The filet was tender and rich, cooked just right, while the salmon was flaky and fresh with a delicate sauce that didn’t overpower. And somehow, we still had room for dessert.

 The Viennese Apple Strudel was warm and spiced, wrapped in a flaky crust, while the strawberry shortcake offered a cool, sweet finish with fresh berries and whipped cream.

You place your full order at the beginning, so the courses come out at a relaxed, steady pace, giving you time to really enjoy the food—and the view. Service was excellent from start to finish: attentive, friendly, and perfectly timed. If you're celebrating something special, or just want a quiet night of incredible food in a beautiful mountain setting, Newman’s should be at the top of your list.

The next morning, we returned for breakfast on the covered deck, coffee in hand and a view that made us slow down and savor the moment. We started with one of their fresh-baked scones and a bowl of house-made granola with fresh fruit—simple, fresh, and delicious. For the main course, we had two eggs with bacon and a thick slice of fresh bread. It was the kind of breakfast that makes you want to linger a little longer, sip a second cup of coffee, and just enjoy the calm.

Whether you’re booking a special dinner or staying overnight and waking up to mountain air and a full breakfast, Newman’s is the kind of place that elevates your time in Saluda. Refined but never stuffy, peaceful yet deeply flavorful—it’s a true gem tucked right into the Orchard Inn.

Green River BBQ

We stopped at  Green River BBQ for lunch during the 20th Annual Saluda Arts Festival, and it hit the spot. The place was busy—no surprise with the festival in full swing—but the covered seating area had plenty of space.

Green River BBQ was closed for a while after Hurricane Helene, due to a significant mudslide that occurred behind the restaurant building, but they’ve since reopened and are back to serving up great food in a laid-back, casual, and welcoming atmosphere.

We grabbed a seat at one of the big picnic tables and looked over the menu. They offer a wide range of BBQ favorites, including pulled pork, ribs, brisket, and smoked chicken, along with classic Southern sides like baked beans, mac and cheese, collard greens, and hush puppies. They also have a solid selection of sandwiches, salads, and local craft beers. Whether you're craving something heavy and smoky or something lighter, there's lots of options.

We started with their fried green tomatoes, which our waitress recommended. They were crispy, tangy, delicious, and a great warm-up for our entrees.

For our entrees, we went with the classic pulled pork sandwich plate and the brisket plate. Both came piled high with tender, smoky meat and classic sides. The pulled pork had just the right amount of smoke and didn’t need much sauce, though they’ve got plenty to choose from if you like to mix it up. The brisket was rich and flavorful with a nice crust on the outside—exactly what you want when you’re craving solid Southern barbecue. They will even trim the fat off for you.

 Green River BBQ is a casual, come-as-you-are kind of place—ideal for lunch during a festival, after a hike, or when you’re just passing through town. It’s dog-friendly, family-friendly, and an excellent stop if you’re hungry and want something hearty and local.

The Purple Onion

The Purple Onion is one of those restaurants that feels like the heartbeat of a town—and when we walked in, it was easy to see why it’s so well-loved. The place was buzzing on the night we visited, with nearly every table full, live music drifting through the air, and the kind of lively, laid-back energy that makes you want to hang out and stay a while.  Definitely our kind of restaurant and one we would frequent if we lived in the area.

The Purple Onion offers both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a full bar with its own seating area. We lucked out with a spot near the live music and settled in for a relaxed, unhurried dinner that ended up being one of our favorites of the trip.

We started with the crab dip—rich, creamy, and served warm with toasted bread. From there, we split the Pink Lady & Gorgonzola Salad, which was crisp, fresh, and perfectly balanced.

For our entrée, we couldn’t resist the halibut special, and it didn’t disappoint. Cooked beautifully, with a light, flavorful sauce, it was one of those dishes you wish you could recreate at home.

We wrapped things up with dessert—Tiramisu and bread pudding—and honestly, we’d go back just for that bread pudding alone.

Everything about The Purple Onion just clicked for us—the food, the atmosphere, the service. It’s lively without being too loud, nice but not too upscale, and exactly the kind of place we seek out when we’re exploring a small town. The live music that evening was excellent as well and really complimented the great food and atmosphere.

If you’re spending a night in Saluda and only have time for one dinner, this should be it.

The Wakey Monkey

We started one of our mornings in Saluda with breakfast at  Wakey Monkey, and it was exactly the kind of local coffee shop we love to find while traveling. Tucked right in the heart of downtown, it’s warm, welcoming, and clearly a favorite among both locals and visitors. The vibe is relaxed, the coffee’s top-notch, and the staff—including the owners—were genuinely super friendly and great to chat with.

We each ordered a vanilla latte, and they were excellent—smooth, not overly sweet, and made with care. For breakfast, we grabbed two sandwiches: one on a toasted bagel with sausage and egg, and the other on a buttery croissant with bacon and egg. Both were fresh, hot, and just what we needed before a day of exploring.

Wakey Monkey also has a nice selection of baked goods and other breakfast items if you’re in the mood for something lighter. Whether you’re looking for a quick grab-and-go coffee or a spot to sit and ease into your morning, this place checks all the boxes. Definitely worth a stop while you're in town.

K’s NY Pizza

Before heading out for our zip lining adventure at The Gorge, we stopped at K’s NY Pizza for a quick and casual lunch—and it hit the spot.

It’s the newest restaurant in town, perched just above Main Street, and offers some really nice views overlooking downtown Saluda. They’ve got covered outdoor seating, which made for a great place to relax before diving into a more adrenaline-packed part of the day.

We ordered the Italian sub and a Margherita pizza to split. The sandwich was stacked and flavorful, with that classic deli-style tang, and the pizza had a crisp crust, fresh tomato, and plenty of basil—simple and satisfying. We also couldn’t pass up the cannoli for dessert, which was creamy and just sweet enough to wrap things up.

K’s is a solid stop if you're looking for something quick, filling, and low-key. Whether you’re grabbing lunch on the go or want a laid-back spot with a view, it’s a nice new addition to the Saluda food scene.

Although we didn’t get a chance to eat at Ward’s Grill on this trip (our weekend was packed, and we ran out of time), it’s a spot that kept coming up in conversations with locals—and that’s always a good sign. Tucked right next to and connected with Thompson’s Store, Ward’s Grill is a classic Southern-style diner that’s been a longtime staple in Saluda.

They serve up traditional breakfast and lunch fare—think eggs, grits, biscuits, pancakes, burgers, sandwiches, and daily plate specials. The vibe is simple, unpretentious, and all about good food at a good price. Locals stop in for their morning coffee and a hearty breakfast, and it’s just as popular for a quick bite at lunch.

If you're looking for a casual, no-fuss meal with a bit of small-town history and charm, Ward’s Grill should definitely be on your radar. We’re already planning to make time for it on our next visit. Oh, and browse Thompson's store, next door while you're there. It's the oldest operating grocery store in North Carolina.

About Little Switzerland

Little Switzerland, North Carolina, is a tiny mountaintop village perched at over 3,500 feet elevation along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Founded in 1909 as a summer resort community, it was named for its resemblance to the Swiss Alps—rolling green hills, dramatic ridgelines, and cool summer breezes. Today, it's a small and peaceful retreat along the Parkway.

What makes Little Switzerland special is its size and simplicity. There’s no sprawling downtown or chain stores—just a handful of locally owned businesses, cozy inns, and scenic overlooks. Whether you’re sipping wine with a view, browsing handmade goods at the general store, or enjoying a drive along the Parkway, everything here invites you to slow down, breathe a little deeper and stay a little longer.

Despite its small footprint, Little Switzerland offers an impressive mix of history, hospitality, and natural beauty. It’s a popular stop for Parkway travelers, motorcyclists riding the famous Diamondback, and anyone looking to unplug and reconnect with the mountains.

Grab a Coffee and Explore Books & Beans

One of our favorite stops in Little Switzerland was Books & Beans, a perfect blend of mountain coziness and small-town charm. This little spot is part cafe, part bookstore, and very inviting.

We each grabbed a two vanilla lattes and found ourselves browsing through shelves lined with local reads, regional history, Appalachian fiction, fantasy, and even cookbooks. Aisle after aisle of books, with whimsical decor and inspirational and funny signs.

It's the kind of place that encourages you to slow down and just enjoy your visit. We sat near the window with our drinks, soaking in the quiet, while other visitors sat outside or flipped through books. It’s more than just a a coffee shop—it’s part of the local experience.

If you venture upstairs, you'll find an art gallery full of beautiful art from local area artists. Books & Beans is among our all-time favorite bookstores.

Mine for Gems at Emerald Village

While we didn’t go gem mining during this visit, we’ve been to Emerald Village before with our kids and highly recommend it—especially if you’re traveling with kids or enjoy a bit of hands-on discovery.

This is more than just a tourist attraction; it’s a real historic mining site where you can pan for gems, tour the old mine, and learn about the area’s rich mineral history.

There’s also a museum, gift shop, and even a nighttime blacklight tour of the mine that adds a little adventure. It’s about a 10-minute drive from town and makes a great outing on a longer stay.

Bring Home Some Gifts from the General Store

We always make a point to stop at the Little Switzerland General Store when we’re in town. Located right in the center of the village, this shop is packed with local goods, crafts, souvenirs, snacks, and nostalgic treasures.

On our visit, we picked up some locally made jam, a few mountain-themed items, and a candle. The store feels like it hasn’t changed much in decades—in the best way. Friendly staff, creaky wood floors, and shelves full of surprises make it a place you’ll want to linger.

Grab some tasty food at the Little Switzerland Cafe

After browsing the shops and grabbing a coffee, we stopped in for lunch at the Little Switzerland Cafe, a cozy and inviting spot located right next to the General Store. In fact, they are connected.

This charming little restaurant has rustic style booths and tables, warm mountain hospitality, and windows that let in beautiful natural light.

There are several different and tasty options available, but are well known for their BBQ. We enjoyed the smoked, deviled eggs and a couple of delicious sandwiches.

Whether you’re stopping in for a quick bite or a slow lunch after exploring the Parkway, the Little Switzerland Cafe is a great place to refuel and soak in the small-town charm of this mountain gem.

Taste Local Wines, Beers, and Ciders at Little Switzerland Orchard & Winery

We spent a relaxing afternoon at Little Switzerland Orchard & Winery, and it ended up being the highlight of our trip. The setting is rustic, quiet and beautiful, with outdoor seating that looks out over the surrounding hills.

We tried a few of their wines, beers, and ciders — each crafted onsite. We enjoyed tasting them all.

While their wine and beer list is small, it’s well-curated, and the cider and beer options make it a great stop for everyone. It’s the kind of place where you can kick back, enjoy the breeze, and forget about time.

They also offer various food items and have both indoor and outdoor seating.

Visit and Hike at Chestoa View Overlook

This section of the Blue Ridge Parkway is currently closed, due to Hurricane Helene.

Just a short drive from Little Switzerland at MP320.8 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Chestoa View Overlook offers one of the best panoramic views in the region. 

We stopped here during our visit to McDowell county and were blown away by the layered ridgelines stretching into the distance. There’s a short, easy loop trail that leads to equally nice views, and it’s a great way to get a little hike in without committing to something long.

The view is especially striking in the early morning or late afternoon light. The overlook and trails are a fantastic way to get some beautiful views, just off the parkway.

Enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway

Please note that due to Hurricane Helene, portions of the parkway around Little Switzerland are closed.

We spent a good part of our visit cruising the Blue Ridge Parkway, and it never disappoints and makes for a peaceful and scenic drive.  

We pulled off at multiple overlooks, took photos of the fading summer greens giving way to golden hues, and just enjoyed the ride. This stretch of the Parkway is perfect for photography, picnicking, or simply soaking in the views. It’s also a great jumping-off point for nearby trails and attractions.

Drive the Diamondback (Highway 226A)

226A was significantly damaged by Hurricane Helene. The highway is open, but the repairs make it unsuitable for high speed or motorcycle riding.

We didn't drive on the Diamondback, also known as Highway 226A, but we saw lots of motorcycles travelling it during our visit.

This twisty mountain road is packed with over 190 curves in just 12 miles, making it a favorite among motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts. 

For us, it was just a fun way to experience the terrain and enjoy a scenic, adrenaline-tinged drive. Along the way, you’ll get peeks of the forest, mountain views, and glimpses of rural mountain life. 

Visit the Orchard at Altapass

A short drive from town, the Orchard at Altapass is a lively and historic spot full of Appalachian flavor. While we didn’t stop here on this trip, we’ve been before and always enjoy the mix of culture and tradition.

You can pick apples, listen to live bluegrass music, enjoy fresh baked goods, and learn about the area’s rail and apple-growing history. The setting is family-friendly, educational, and fun—and the view from the orchard itself is a bonus.

Taste Amazing Wine at Linville Falls Winery

We wrapped up one of our afternoons at Linville Falls Winery, and it couldn’t have been a better way to end the day. The property is beautiful—surrounded by vines, with plenty of outdoor seating under shady trees. We split a wine flight and enjoyed a charcuterie board while listening to live music from a local duo.

The wines were impressive—especially their reds—and the relaxed setting makes it a great stop whether you’re just passing through or planning to linger. It’s also very close to Linville Falls if you’re combining outdoor exploring with a bit of indulgence.

What’s Nearby?

If you have extra time in the area, there are some great nearby attractions that are well worth the short drive:

• Mount Mitchell – The highest peak east of the Mississippi, with cool temps, sweeping views, and hiking trails that range from easy to challenging.  Currently Closed.
• Grandfather Mountain – Home to the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge, wildlife habitats, and some of the most rugged hiking in the state.
• Linville Caverns – A fascinating underground world with guided tours through limestone passages, complete with stalactites, streams, and a rich mining history.

 During one of our recent visits, we spent a few days soaking in everything Old Fort and McDowell County has to offer: local restaurants, historic sites, beautiful hikes, and plenty of mountain scenery.

Where is Old Fort, NC?

Old Fort is located just off I-40 at exit 73 in Western North Carolina. It's one of the last exits before making the climb up Black Mountain when heading east towards Asheville, NC. Old Fort is about 2 hours from both Charlotte and Winston- Salem NC, less than 30 minutes from Asheville, NC, and only 10 minutes away from Black Mountain.

This quaint and historic railroad town is part of McDowell County, which includes Marion, Little Switerland, and the popular Lake James.

The main downtown area is so close to I-40 that it is visible when passing by the exit. Because of this, it makes for a wonderful small mountain town destination when travelling along I-40.  

Old Fort affects of Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene caused significant flooding and damage to Old Fort. The main down area from I-40 to the historic train station was flooded as Mill Creek overflowed its banks. The massive amounts of water caused homes and businesses to be destroyed. This included the main Destination McDowell Welcome Center and other surrounding buildings.   

When the waters receded, mud and sediment, over a foot deep, covered most of the historic downtown.

Restoration of basic services like power and water took over a week, and clean-up over 4-weeks.

While many businesses are still closed, many others are re-opening, as is the town of Old Fort itself, as of 11/1, welcoming visitors.

We had just visited Old Fort and spent over 4 days staying there, exploring the town and visiting businesses. We made many friends there during our visit, all of whom were affected by the flooding. In fact, the creek side rental cabin we stayed in was completely washed away and destroyed.

Like many small western NC towns affected by Helene, Old Fort suffered significant negative tourism impact during the peak fall season. We encourage you to visit and support the many wonderful and locally owned businesses!

Things to do in Old Fort

One of the first things you'll want to do when visiting Old Fort is stop by the Destination McDowell welcome center to learn about current area events. You'll also find lots of brochures, maps, and information on things to do, local attractions and more. 

Pisgah National Forest surrounds Old Fort, and as a result is nearby to many outdoor activities, including the popular Catawba Falls. You'll find many other hiking trails, waterfalls, and even fantastic options for mountain biking.

If you prefer shopping and trying out great local food, Old Fort has that as well, with several great local restaurants, quaint shops, and art galleries. They even have a fantastic brewery and winery that serves up in house crafted beverages and food.

Where to Eat in Old Fort, NC

Old Fort may be a small mountain town, but its food scene is surprisingly good and frankly unexpected.

During our visit, we discovered a variety of restaurants offering great food at very reasonable prices. They even have a brewery with great food, and one of the best coffee shops in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Seeker Coffee.

Where to Stay when visiting Old Fort

When visiting Old Fort, you have several different options for where to stay.

During our visit, we stayed at a creek side stilt cabin by Greybeard Rentals and absolutely loved it. We enjoyed a roomy cabin, right next to downtown Old Fort, and across the street from Eudo Wine. We even had a hot tub!

Sadly, the cabin we stayed in, pictured above, was washed away and destroyed by the flooding. But the owners have other similar cabins that will be available for rent in the near future.

Also available are Mountain Appalachian Inn and Inn on Mill Creek (currently closed until 2025).

If you prefer to camp, Catawba Falls Campground is a great option. We stayed here many years ago with our kids during our first visit to Catawba Falls and really enjoyed it. The campground is currently closed, but is working to reopen.

Dates, Hours and Tickets

Winter Lights for 2024 runs from 11/15/2024 - 1/4/2026.  

Tickets should be purchased in advance. In order to minimize the number of guests in the gardens at one time, this year's Winter Lights event will offer designated entry times (6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, or 8:00 PM). The entry gates close at 9:00 PM and Winter Lights closes for the day at 10:00 PM.

Visitors can arrive after their entry time and stay until 10:00pm.

Tickets are sold per vehicle (not per person) and in a tier system based on the size of your vehicle. 

How to get there

The North Carolina Arboretum is located next to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 393. From I-26, take Exit 33 and follow NC 191 South for two miles to the entrance on the right.

Upon arrival at the gate, please have your printed ticket ready to scan. Your ticket will be emailed to you after your online purchase.

To aid the flow of traffic, please plan to approach the event from NC 191 South (Brevard Rd.), passing the Asheville Outlets and turning right into the event. The Arboretum is asking that attendees do not turn left into the event from the Parkway.

The 2025 Dambo Trolls at Winter Lights

A brand new addition to Winter Lights this year is the Dambo Trolls, and they were a real highlight of our visit. We had heard about them, but seeing them in person at night is something special. The warm lights bring out the details in the wood and give the trolls a fun and slightly mysterious look that fits perfectly with the nighttime setting.

You’ll spot them in different areas as you walk the paths, and they add a sense of discovery to the experience. Families were gathered around them when we visited, with lots of kids running up for photos. The trolls feel like a natural part of the event and bring an extra layer of creativity and whimsy to the gardens.

Make sure to slow down and enjoy them. If you want photos without too many people around, try to stop by earlier in the evening before the crowds build. The trolls are one of the standout features this year and definitely something you’ll want to see in person.

Things to see and do

The Winter Lights event has a number of different displays, and the staff will be there to answer questions and provide maps of displays.

You'll also find refreshment stands with snacks, holiday treats, and hot chocolate. Of course, no Christmas event is complete without Santa, who is there as well.

Tips and things to know before you go

We've been to Winter Lights a number of times over the years. In doing so, we've picked up a few important things you need to know, and some tips to help you enjoy your visit!

Things to know:

• Pets are not allowed
• The event is rain or shine
• Restrooms will be available in the Baker Visitor Center and Education Center, and there will be portable restrooms available for use.
• The event is wheelchair accessible
• Food and beverages are available: The Cocoa Shack, in the Gardener’s Shed, will sell hot cocoa, alcoholic beverages, and treats. The Bent Creek Bistro, at the Education Center, will sell small snacks, hot cocoa, alcoholic beverages and s’more kits. For 2025 there was also a vendor near the parking area.

Tips from us:

• Dress warm and in layers, it can be very cold and windy during the event.
• There is a lovely Christmas store in the Education Center full of unique and beautiful items
• Food, drinks, and snacks are also available, including hot chocolate (and beer)!
• Facing the Arboretum (you'll see the lights), we've found the easiest way to see all the lights is from the right side near the Education Center. You can then walk down to the Baker Visitor Center from there.
• Plan to arrive on time or shortly after your time, as they cannot allow people in early.
• The staff makes arrival and parking very easy - Just follow the directions from the entry gate, drive down the entry road, and watch for the parking attendants who will point you to the right place.
• The area is very dark, which makes the lights beautiful, BUT, it makes it difficult to get photos with a camera. Using your iPhone or a higher end digital camera is your best option.

Parking at Catawba Falls Trailhead

The Catawba Falls trailhead is about 10 minutes from downtown Old Fort NC, on the south side of I-40. You'll follow Catawba River Road until it ends in the main parking lot, where you'll find the trailhead and some public restrooms.

While the parking lot is large, on a busy weekend day, it's challenging to find a parking spot. We always recommend hiking on a weekday if possible, and arriving early.

The photo above is from early morning. We thought we were pretty early, but as you can see, the parking area was already filling up.

Hiking to Catawba Falls

We hiked to Catawba Falls many years ago, while camping with our kids when they were young.  

Since then, and rather recently, the Catawba Falls Trail was updated. At the falls, decking and stairs have been built to make viewing the falls and accessing them better and safer.

This was our first time back in many years, and since the trail improvements were made.

We visited Catawba Falls as part of a long weekend spent in Old Fort, NC and McDowell County during September 2024, literally days before the flooding from Hurricane Helene hit and did significant damage to the area.

You'll find the trailhead to Catawba Falls at the end of the parking area, and to the right of the restrooms. 

The hike begins through a forest, and alongside the Catawba River. Trees cover the trail, providing a nice shady hike nearly the entire way to the base of Catawba Falls.

The hike itself is 1.1 miles out to the base of Catawba Falls. The hike is easy to moderate, with only minor elevation changes. You'll be alongside the Catawba River most of the way, and you'll find lots of side trail to the river to explore.

We really enjoyed exploring the side trails and found some great photo opportunities just off the trail a little.

The beautiful sounds of the rushing water from the river will also enhance your enjoyment of the hike. The trail is wide and very well maintained, making it a nice, relaxing and pleasant hike.

Shortly after beginning the hike, you'll cross a large foot-bridge, with an old building to the left. These are some remanents of the old 1920s hydropower dam which served power for the town of Old Fort. You'll pass by the old dam further down the trail.

This is one of a few foot bridges you'll cross on your way to the base of the falls.

Before you begin the gradual incline up to Catawba Falls, you'll pass by a small but beautiful waterfall. If you look closely, you'll realize the falls are in fact not natural and they are falling over an old stone and concrete wall that is overgrown with vegetation. This is the old dam.

After the dam, the trail climbs up a bit more steeply and you'll know you're close to reaching Catawba Falls itself.

You'll hear Catawba Falls well before you see it. You'll also see the new stairs leading up to the newly constructed wood decking and stairs that allow you to view the falls and make the climb up to the trail to Upper Catawba Falls.

Catawba Falls

Catawba Falls itself is 100' tall, gently cascading waterfall. The entire fall is difficult to view from the base, but regardless, even from the base, the falls are gorgeous and very photogenic.

There are steps leading down to the base of the falls where you can take photos, sit and enjoy the views, or wade in the cool and crisp waters.

In the past, this is where most ended their hike. The climb up to the upper falls was steep, dangerous and involved needing to use ropes.

With the new decking and stairs, everyone can safely walk up and not only enjoy marvellous views of the entire Catawba Falls, but see Upper Catawba Falls as well.

The climb up isn't easy though. It's 580 steps and 0.3 miles to the upper falls trail. It's the equivalent of climbing a 30-story building and it is strenuous. We consider ourselves in pretty good shape, and by the time we climbed up and back down, our legs and knees were shot.

On your way up, you'll climb the new metal 60-foot tall observation tower, which delivers a magnificent view of the falls and surrounding mountains. But warning, if you are afraid of heights, skip this. The stairs are metal grates that you can see through all the way to the bottom.

Catawba Falls (Upper)

After reaching the top of the stairs (be sure to hold your hands in the air and sing the Rocky theme), you'll follow a narrow dirt trail out to the base of Upper Catawba Falls.

There are two ways to get to it. Take the second one, which has a nice wooden deck to view the falls.

While Catawba Falls is a gently cascading waterfall, made up of many smaller cascades. Upper falls is a single large, 80-foot tall plunge into a deep pool at the base.

This was our first time hiking up to Upper Catawba Falls, and it is equally beautiful as the main Catawba Falls, just different. This is a more powerful and louder waterfall and also very photogenic.

Hiking Back to the Parking Area

After visiting Upper Catawba Falls, you can return the way you came OR continue on the loop trail.

If you return the way you came, the complete hike is a 3-mile round-trip hike. Following the loop trail makes for a 4-mile round-trip hike.

Because of time constraints, and frankly, us spending too much time exploring side trails; we elected to go the shorter route and hike back the way we came.

Recent Closure History for Catawba Falls

Catawba Falls closed in 2022 for a scheduled two-year trail improvement project. The focus of the improvements were to improve safety and accessibility.   The changes were definitely necessary, given the popularity of the falls, at more than 10,000 visitors per week during peak season.  

The also beautiful upper Catawba Falls area was only accessible by climbing rocks or using ropes places by visitors. Both extremely unsafe options.

Catawba Falls reopened to the public on May 31, 2024, with lots of new changes, including:

• New wooden Stairs: Upper Falls is now accessible by 580 stairs, designed for safer access and provides enhanced views of Lower Catawba Falls.
• Observation Tower: A 60-foot metal tower was installed, that offers panoramic views of the upper falls and surrounding mountains. 
• New Trails: The Catawba Falls Ridge Trail and a Wildflower Trail were added.
• Overlooks: Several overlook platforms were built along the trail 

Catawba Falls closed again shortly after its reopening because of damage from Hurricane Helene. Several washouts, slides, and fallen trees damaged the trail out to the falls. Crews also repaired several damaged wooden overlooks near the falls.

Catawba Falls re-opened again in January 2025 and remains open for visitors.
