Getting to Biltmore, Parking, and Shuttles

Biltmore is easy to reach, but Christmas crowds make planning important. Most guests enter through the main gate in Biltmore Village. From there, it takes about 10–20 minutes to reach the parking areas depending on traffic.

For Biltmore House, most visitors park in the general lots and either walk to the house or take a shuttle. Lots A and B are park and walk and are closest to the house.  Lots C (for RVs) and E (Accessible) and offer shuttle service to the house.

Shuttles run continuously, but lines can form on busy days, so arriving early helps everything feel more relaxed. 

Antler Hill Village has its own parking lot and generally doesn’t require a shuttle.  You can also take a shuttle to Biltmore Gardens from the house.

Arriving early is the best strategy — you’ll avoid the feeling of rushing to your tour time and can enjoy the grounds before or after your house visit. We stress this, as we got delayed at dinner and on the shuttle one evening for a Christmas house tour, and missed our time and were denied entry due to Candlelight Christmas starting.

What to Expect Inside Biltmore House at Christmas During the Daytime Tour

Walking into Biltmore House at Christmas never gets old. The Banquet Hall, with its towering Fraser fir, sets the tone for the entire tour. Each room has its own theme and style, and the décor team puts an incredible amount of detail into every ornament, ribbon, and arrangement.

Favorites always include the Winter Garden, the Library, and the grand staircase wrapped with garland, and of course The Banquet Hall. Some rooms stick with traditional red-and-green themes, while others lean into rich jewel tones or unexpected color palettes. The design changes every year, and even after countless visits, we always notice something new, and it's always beautiful.

Jenn and I both agree that the library is our favorite room at Christmas.

What to Expect Inside Biltmore House at Christmas During the Daytime Tour

We visited Candlelight Christmas at Biltmore last night for the first time, and it was an experience we won’t forget anytime soon. The moment you come around the corner and see the house glowing in the darkness — the massive Christmas tree lit up on the front lawn, the luminaries lining the walkway — it quite literally feels like stepping back in time. For a moment, you can almost imagine what it must have been like on Christmas Eve in 1895, the night Biltmore first opened its doors.

Because Candlelight is so popular, there are definitely more people than you’ll see during the daytime tour. We had a pretty long line when we arrived, but it moved quickly and smoothly. Once inside, the mood shifts entirely compared to the daytime experience. The décor is almost identical, but the atmosphere is completely different. Instead of bright natural light, the entire house glows softly. Christmas trees sparkle a little brighter, ornaments catch the warm light, and the rooms feel cozier and more intimate.

During the day, the house is fairly quiet. But in the evening, you’re greeted with live musicians and choirs performing Christmas music throughout the house. Combined with the lights, the history, and the acoustics of the rooms, the whole experience comes together in a way that feels surprisingly emotional — a kind of Christmas magic that Biltmore does incredibly well. At times, we almost felt like we were guests in the Vanderbilt home, celebrating alongside George, his family, and their friends during that first holiday season.

Was it worth the money? Absolutely. It’s a special experience and one we’re really glad we did. It’s not something we would pay for every single year, but it’s definitely something everyone should see at least once. Biltmore goes above and beyond to make Candlelight Christmas feel authentic, warm, and unforgettable — and it truly was a night to remember.

Dining at Biltmore During the Holidays

Dining fills up fast during Christmas, so planning ahead is important.

For quick meals or snacks, the cafés and bakery near Biltmore House work well. Antler Hill Village also has several casual options.

For a sit-down meal:

• Stable Cafe  —  food and a casual atmosphere next to the house. Makes for a convenient stop when visiting the house.
• Cedric’s Tavern feels especially cozy during December. Often very busy and requires advanced reservations.
• The Bistro - an upscale restaurant that focuses on estate-raised and regionally sourced ingredients in a vibrant, casual setting with a European flair.
• The Dining Room at The Inn is a 4-star fine-dining choice for a more elevated holiday experience. Casual Elegant/Cocktail dress is required.

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on Candlelight evenings and during Christmas week.

Christmas at Biltmore with Kids

Biltmore at Christmas is very kid-friendly, but pacing is key based on our experience with our kids when they were younger. The house is engaging for kids thanks to the huge trees, sparkling lights, and impressive rooms, but the tour can feel long for younger visitors.

Daytime visits work best for families. After your house tour, Antler Hill Village gives kids room to explore and enjoy the lights.

Strollers are welcome, and the estate is easy to navigate with them. Elevators are available for the house tour if needed.

Accessibility & Mobility Tips

Biltmore does a good job supporting guests with mobility needs. Elevators allow access to most of the house, and wheelchairs are available in limited supply.

Accessible parking and shuttles reduce the walking distance to the house. Weekday mornings offer the easiest navigation through the rooms.

Antler Hill Village is mostly flat and easy to move through, and the gardens and Conservatory are accessible with some gentle hills.

Planning extra time at each step — parking, shuttles, and the house — makes the visit smoother and more comfortable.

Photography Tips for Christmas at Biltmore

Whether you’re using a phone or a camera, Christmas is one of the best times to photograph Biltmore.

Small cameras and lenses are allowed for personal use, but no flash, microphones or tripods inside the house. Please contact the Biltmore for their photography policy and commercial use.

• Raise ISO when needed — grain is better than blur, and grain is easily fixed during post editing.

• Bring a CPL (Circular Polarizing Filter) for better sunset photos, outdoor photos, and to cut light glare of interior floors.

Mehaffey Tree Farm

Mehaffey Tree Farm is one of those small, family-run places that instantly makes you feel at home. Located in the Jonathan Creek area, this farm grows beautiful Fraser firs that are healthy, full, and rich in color — perfect for that classic mountain Christmas look.

Visitors can choose to cut their own tree or pick from a variety of pre-cut options. The owners are known for their friendly, personal touch — they’ll chat with you about the farm’s history, share tips on keeping your tree fresh, and help secure it for the ride home.

It’s a simple, no-frills experience in the best possible way — quiet, authentic, and centered on the joy of finding the perfect tree. They also serve hot chocolate and hot cider, which is wonderful on a cold day!

WNC Landscaping and Christmas Trees

Locations: 624 Hemphill Road and 2436 Jonathan Creek Road, Waynesville, NC

Opening: Friday, November 29th

A true local favorite, WNC Landscaping and Christmas Trees has been helping families find their perfect holiday tree for decades. Their farms, located on Hemphill Road and Jonathan Creek Road, are surrounded by stunning mountain views that make the experience extra special.

Visitors can wander through rows of fragrant Fraser firs, ranging from small tabletop trees to towering 12-foot beauties. You can cut your own tree or choose a fresh pre-cut one — either way, the staff is always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading. Besides trees, they often have handmade wreaths, garlands, and greenery for sale.

Boyd Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 445 Boyd Farm Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: Now Open for 2025

If there is one Haywood County tree farm that truly captures the magic of Christmas in the North Carolina mountains, it is Boyd Mountain. This century-old family farm is a beloved local tradition, drawing visitors from all over the Southeast each holiday season, and for good reason.

When we visited this year (2025), they had just opened for the season, and the excitement was already in the air. The farm is beautifully decorated and offers so much more than just trees. There are numerous photo ops, plenty of fresh wreaths, stands, and Christmas decorating options, and even a food truck serving up tasty treats. We also found Santa greeting visitors and taking photos with families, which made it especially fun for the kids.

We met owner David Boyd, who welcomed us warmly and shared a little about the farm. We hopped on a wagon ride up to the top of the property, and the views were absolutely incredible. The hills are covered with rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs, and there are trees as far as you can see.

Boyd Mountain offers more than Christmas trees. It offers a full Christmas experience that brings families back year after year. Everywhere we looked, people were smiling, taking photos, and enjoying the mountain atmosphere. We had a wonderful time ourselves, and it is easy to see why this farm has become such a cherished holiday destination in Western North Carolina.

Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 280 Setzer Drive, Canton, NC

Opening: Pre-Tagging Beginning November 1. Schedule a time to pick up your tree then. They expect to sell out with pre tagging.

Tucked away in the scenic Dutch Cove community near Canton, this family-run farm has become a quiet favorite for those who love a relaxed, down-home Christmas tree experience. The drive to Dutch Cove is beautiful, winding through peaceful mountain countryside that already feels like a step back in time.

The farm specializes in premium Fraser firs grown right on-site, and you’ll find a wide range of sizes and shapes — ideal for families decorating cozy cabins or larger homes. The owners are incredibly welcoming and often take time to help visitors find exactly what they’re looking for.

Along with trees, Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm also sells handmade wreaths and garlands, making it a great one-stop shop for your holiday greenery.

Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 756 Hemphill Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: November 22, Monday – Thursday 10am-4pm and Friday – Sunday 9am-5pm

Located in the beautiful Jonathan Creek area just outside Maggie Valley, Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm offers one of the most scenic and peaceful spots in Haywood County to find your Christmas tree. The farm is surrounded by rolling hills, open meadows, and mountain views that make the experience feel straight out of a holiday postcard.

Visitors can stroll through rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs and take their time finding the right one — whether you prefer to cut your own or choose from a selection of freshly pre-cut trees. The owners are friendly and welcoming, always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading your tree for the trip home.

One of the most photographed landmarks here is their beautiful red barn painted with the classic 7-Up logo — a bright splash of color against the green trees and mountain backdrop. It’s a favorite photo spot for families, and it adds a touch of nostalgic charm to the whole experience.

Nesbitt Tree Farm

Address: 333 Sunset Ridge Road, Clyde, NC

When: Now Open for 2025

A short drive from downtown Waynesville, Nesbitt Tree Farm is another great local gem. The farm is easy to access and offers high-quality Fraser firs that are carefully trimmed and maintained.

The Nesbitt family has been growing Christmas trees for many years, and their experience shows — every tree seems perfectly shaped and fragrant. They also sell fresh wreaths and garlands, often made right there on the farm.

It’s a wonderful option if you’re looking for a less crowded, laid-back place to pick your tree while still getting that authentic mountain farm feel.

Rock Cottage Farm Christmas Trees

Address: 430 Carswell Rd, Canton, NC 28716

Located just outside Canton, Rock Cottage Farm is a wonderful family-owned and operated farm offering pre-cut Fraser firs at budget-friendly prices. While they don’t offer choose-and-cut, they make up for it with a warm, festive atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.

Visitors can pick out a beautiful, freshly cut Fraser fir and then spend some time exploring the Christmas Barn, filled with handmade gifts, ornaments, and crafts all created by the family. You can sip on hot chocolate, enjoy fresh popcorn, and even get your face painted — a big hit with kids and the young at heart.

There’s also a cozy fire to warm up by, and friendly animals around the farm to visit — including a sweet, gentle donkey who quickly became one of our favorites.

We really enjoyed our visit here and meeting the wonderful family behind Rock Cottage Farm. It’s a heartwarming reminder that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Plan Your Visit

Most Christmas tree farms near Waynesville open around Thanksgiving and stay open through mid-December. Hours and availability can vary depending on weather and demand, so it’s always a good idea to check each farm’s website or Facebook page before heading out.

Bring warm clothes, gloves, and boots — the fields can be muddy, especially after a mountain rain. Most farms cut your tree for you and will strap it to your car for you.    

Many farms also have farm stands selling wreaths, garlands, and local goods, so bring some cash just in case.

Tips for Finding, Picking, and Bringing Your Tree Home

1. Choose the right size for your space.
Before heading out, measure the height of your ceiling and remember to leave room for your tree stand and topper. Many people overestimate how tall their room is — and end up trimming several feet off once they get home!

2. Look for color and shape.
A healthy Fraser fir should have rich green needles, a pleasant scent, and a strong, even shape. Walk around your tree to check all sides — especially if it will be placed in a central spot.

3. Test for freshness.
Gently tug on a few branches or tap the tree on the ground. If only a few needles fall, it’s fresh. Fraser firs are known for holding their needles well, so this test should give you confidence in your pick.

4. Ask about shaking and baling.
Most local farms will shake loose needles out of your tree and wrap it in netting to make it easier to transport. This simple step helps keep your car and home cleaner.

5. Give it a fresh cut at home.
Once you’re home, trim about an inch off the bottom before placing your tree in water. This allows it to absorb water more easily and stay fresh longer.

6. Keep it hydrated.
Check the water level daily — trees can drink a surprising amount, especially during the first few days indoors. Never let the base dry out, or the trunk will seal and stop taking in water.

7. Enjoy the moment.
Make a day of it — bring a thermos of hot chocolate, take photos, and enjoy the mountain scenery. Picking your own Christmas tree is about the experience as much as the tree itself.

Dates, Hours and Tickets

Winter Lights for 2024 runs from 11/15/2024 - 1/4/2026.  

Tickets should be purchased in advance. In order to minimize the number of guests in the gardens at one time, this year's Winter Lights event will offer designated entry times (6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, or 8:00 PM). The entry gates close at 9:00 PM and Winter Lights closes for the day at 10:00 PM.

Visitors can arrive after their entry time and stay until 10:00pm.

Tickets are sold per vehicle (not per person) and in a tier system based on the size of your vehicle. 

How to get there

The North Carolina Arboretum is located next to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 393. From I-26, take Exit 33 and follow NC 191 South for two miles to the entrance on the right.

Upon arrival at the gate, please have your printed ticket ready to scan. Your ticket will be emailed to you after your online purchase.

To aid the flow of traffic, please plan to approach the event from NC 191 South (Brevard Rd.), passing the Asheville Outlets and turning right into the event. The Arboretum is asking that attendees do not turn left into the event from the Parkway.

The 2025 Dambo Trolls at Winter Lights

A brand new addition to Winter Lights this year is the Dambo Trolls, and they were a real highlight of our visit. We had heard about them, but seeing them in person at night is something special. The warm lights bring out the details in the wood and give the trolls a fun and slightly mysterious look that fits perfectly with the nighttime setting.

You’ll spot them in different areas as you walk the paths, and they add a sense of discovery to the experience. Families were gathered around them when we visited, with lots of kids running up for photos. The trolls feel like a natural part of the event and bring an extra layer of creativity and whimsy to the gardens.

Make sure to slow down and enjoy them. If you want photos without too many people around, try to stop by earlier in the evening before the crowds build. The trolls are one of the standout features this year and definitely something you’ll want to see in person.

The Winter Lights event has a number of different displays, and the staff will be there to answer questions and provide maps of displays.

You'll also find refreshment stands with snacks, holiday treats, and hot chocolate. Of course, no Christmas event is complete without Santa, who is there as well.

Tips and things to know before you go

We've been to Winter Lights a number of times over the years. In doing so, we've picked up a few important things you need to know, and some tips to help you enjoy your visit!

Things to know:

• Pets are not allowed
• The event is rain or shine
• Restrooms will be available in the Baker Visitor Center and Education Center, and there will be portable restrooms available for use.
• The event is wheelchair accessible
• Food and beverages are available: The Cocoa Shack, in the Gardener’s Shed, will sell hot cocoa, alcoholic beverages, and treats. The Bent Creek Bistro, at the Education Center, will sell small snacks, hot cocoa, alcoholic beverages and s’more kits. For 2025 there was also a vendor near the parking area.

Tips from us:

• Dress warm and in layers, it can be very cold and windy during the event.
• There is a lovely Christmas store in the Education Center full of unique and beautiful items
• Food, drinks, and snacks are also available, including hot chocolate (and beer)!
• Facing the Arboretum (you'll see the lights), we've found the easiest way to see all the lights is from the right side near the Education Center. You can then walk down to the Baker Visitor Center from there.
• Plan to arrive on time or shortly after your time, as they cannot allow people in early.
• The staff makes arrival and parking very easy - Just follow the directions from the entry gate, drive down the entry road, and watch for the parking attendants who will point you to the right place.
• The area is very dark, which makes the lights beautiful, BUT, it makes it difficult to get photos with a camera. Using your iPhone or a higher end digital camera is your best option.

Christmas At the NuWray Hotel

During the holiday season, the NuWray Hotel becomes one of the most festive spots in downtown Burnsville. This historic hotel sits right on the Town Square, and at Christmas it feels like a classic small-town holiday scene straight out of a postcard. Soft lights, wreaths, and seasonal touches bring a warm glow to the building, especially in the evenings when the square is lit up for the season.

Inside, the hotel is decorated with traditional Christmas details that pair beautifully with its historic character. The grand staircase, cozy common areas, and original architectural features feel especially inviting this time of year. It is a popular stop for holiday photos, a quiet drink, or simply stepping inside to soak up the atmosphere.

The NuWray is also known for hosting special holiday events throughout December, making it more than just a place to stay.

One seasonal favorite is the dinner theater performances held in partnership with the Parkway Playhouse. These shows are lighthearted, festive, and a fun way to enjoy an evening out during the holidays.

The hotel also typically offers a special Christmas Eve dinner, featuring a multi-course meal in a warm and elegant setting. Reservations are recommended, as it is a popular way for visitors and locals alike to celebrate the holiday.

Farmer’s Market, Holiday Market

2025 Update - There is no holiday market for 2025

The farmers market is a weekend tradition in Burnsville, NC, and we always enjoy exploring the various vendors during our visits. In fact, we feature the market in our 15+ Best Things to do in Burnsville NC guide. 

For the holidays, the market will specialize in selling holiday items, including holiday treats, gifts and decor.

The Holiday Market will be every Saturday through December from 10am - 2pm.

Holiday Bizarre

The Holiday Bizarre will feature 34 local artisans with pottery, jewelry, fabric art, reclaimed wood and more!  There will also be a food truck available (Root Down)

The Bizarre will be at the Burnsville Community Resource Pavillion at 322 West Main Street in Burnsville. Times are from 11-4pm, simultaneous to the Burnsville Christmas Parade.

Annual Christmas Parade

Who doesn't love a small town Christmas Parade? The magic of the holidays will fill the streets of downtown Burnsville during the annual Burnsville Christmas parade.

The parade will feature festive floats from local businesses and organizations, prancing horses, marching bands, fire trucks, the Grinch, and, of course, Santa Claus.   

Before and after the parade, be sure to explore Burnsville vibrant downtown. You'll find charming shops and wonderful restaurants, all perfect for holiday shopping and dining.

Be sure to visit the Burnsville Holiday Bazaar at the Farmers' Market (322 West Main) from 11 AM to 4 PM, the Christmas Ornament Crafts Show at Town Center (6 South Main Street) from 9 AM to 3 PM, and the Toe River Crafts Art Sale at Homeplace Beer Co & Hog Hollow (321 West Main) from 12 PM to 5 PM. 

The parade is on December 6th and begins at 1:00pm.

Merry Main Street

Merry Main Street is a festive holiday celebration in downtown Burnsville on December 13th from 5;30pm - 8:30pm.

This main holiday event begins with the tree lighting ceremony at 5:45pm, followed by horse-drawn carriage rides around the historic and beautiful town square. You'll also find Santa in the pocket park, next to the Visitor Center from 6-9pm. Children under 18 will receive gifts.

"Meet Us at the Manger" is a collection of nativities from around the world and hosted at First Baptist Church (51 Town Square). You can experience the sights and sounds of a live nativity scene, while carolers roam and sing around downtown. The event is from 10am - 9pm.

When is it?

The holiday season in Hendersonville begins in late November and carries right through New Year’s Eve — a full month of lights, music, and small-town mountain magic.

Here’s a look at the key events and when they happen:

• Friday, November 28, 2025 – The season kicks off with the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Carriage Rides from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse on Main Street. It’s the perfect way to welcome the holidays, surrounded by twinkling lights, live music, and that cozy small-town charm Hendersonville is known for.

• November 28 – December 21, 2025 – Enjoy the beloved “A Flat Rock Playhouse Christmas” production, filled with music, laughter, and holiday spirit.

• Starting November 28, 2025 – Downtown comes alive with the Peppermint Bear Scavenger Hunt, a fun activity for families to explore local shops and holiday window displays.

• Saturday, December 5, 2025 – Step back in time during the Olde Fashioned Christmas celebration from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Stroll Main Street, visit Santa, take a carriage ride, and enjoy extended shopping hours and festive treats.

• Sunday, December 6, 2025 – Don’t miss the Hendersonville Christmas Parade, starting at 6:00 p.m. This nighttime parade lights up Main Street with floats, marching bands, and plenty of holiday spirit.

• Wednesday, December 31, 2025 – Ring in the new year at the New Year’s Eve Apple Rise, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Historic Courthouse Plaza — a fun and family-friendly celebration to close out the season.

Christmas Tree Lighting and Carriage Rides

The kick-off event for Hendersonville's Home for the Holidays is the Christmas tree lighting at the historic courthouse in downtown. Before the event, shops are open, allowing families to shop, explore, and help peppermint bear find her lost cubs (see below for details).  

There is also live music playing, food trucks, hot drinks, and the town is decorated with beautiful Christmas lights.

Around 6:00pm, Santa arrives and the countdown to light the enormous Christmas tree. Santa lights the tree, and the Hendersonville holiday season officially begins!

We were there for this magical event and really enjoyed the festivities, even with the frigid temperatures that evening! Hundreds of people turned out to support the town and this amazing event.

Flat Rock Playhouse Christmas Show

One highlight of our visit to Hendersonville was seeing the annual Christmas show at the historic Flat Rock Playhouse. This Christmas themed musical features singing and dancing performances by a cast from all over the US.   

This 90 minute performance full of traditional holiday favorites and new adaptations was wonderful. The caliber of the cast, music, and quality of the performance blew us away.

This is a dazzling show, perfect for the whole family, and a great way to put everyone in the holiday spirit! Purchase tickets here.

Peppermint Bear Scavenger Hunt

Oh, no! Peppermint bear has lost her cubs in downtown Hendersonville! She needs your help to search for her lost cubs!

We took part in this super fun scavenger hunt before the tree lighting during our visit to Hendersonville's Home for the Holidays. We honestly didn't expect this to be near as challenging or fun as it was, but we had a blast.

The cubs are located in different downtown Hendersonville businesses. You'll want to grab one of the brochures from the Hendersonville Welcome Center or from one of the participating businesses. The brochure will have a list of the participating businesses, and the locations for each.

You'll visit the locations and find the hidden bear cub. Once you do, the shopkeeper will punch your brochure. You need at least 12 of the 28 participating businesses in order to be eligible for a scavenger hunt prize. The brochure has instructions on how to enter to win prizes.

During our search, we found our 12! Ok, Jenn found 12. I (Larry) didn't find any.

Not only did we have fun trying to find the stuffed bear cubs, we also were able to explore many businesses that we had never been in. We also throughly enjoyed meeting the shop owners and staff as well. They were having as much fun as we were!

Some of our favorite participating shops included: Henderson County Heritage Museum, sweetFrog, Wag, Mia's Marketplace, Pisgah Forest Gem Mine, LazyOne, Fins on Fifth, and Razberry Threads.

Jeter Mountain Farm Christmas

New this year, is Christmas on the Farm at Jeter Mountain Farms, a popular Hendersonville Apple Farm and one of our favorites!

During your visit, you can pick out the perfect Christmas tree (all from Western NC), take a holiday tractor ride around the farm, enjoy live music and more!

Jeter Mountain Farm has special holiday cookies (sugar and chocolate chunk), special holiday ciders, live Christmas music playing that you can enjoy fireside, and even take a wagon ride. Even the 1813 Smokehouse has new hot soups on the menu to help keep you warm!

We really enjoyed our visit, where we explored the shop adorned with beautiful Christmas decorations, took a holiday themed tractor ride, walked through the Christmas trees, and even sampled the hot cookies and holiday drinks!

Admission is free! They recommend making a reservation to purchase a tree so they can guarantee you'll get one.  

Olde Fashioned Christmas

You'll feel like you're stepping into a classic Hallmark Christmas movie as downtown merchants stay open late and serve holiday treats. 

You'll also find carolers walking the sidewalks, horse-drawn carriage rides, and Santa and Mrs. Claus make an appearance in the courthouse plaza. Learn more.

Holiday Carriage Rides in Downtown

Holiday Carriage Rides along Main street in downtown Hendersonville are available after the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and on the evening of December 6.  

These horse-drawn carriage rides begin at the Historic Courthouse and take up Main Street surrounded by shops, restaurants, Christmas Lights and decorations. 

Carriage rides are free, and on a first-come, first-serve basis.  

On December 6th, the rides are part of the Olde Fashioned Christmas event where stores and shops stay open late, and Santa Claus makes an appearance.

We really enjoyed taking photos and watching everyone ride in the carriages. The horses and old-fashioned carriages were absolutely beautiful, surrounded by the lights and decorations.  Learn more.

Christmas Parade

A holiday Christmas tradition going back many, many years is the Christmas Parade. The parade features festive floats, marching bands, and, of course, Mrs. Claus and Santa.

Floats and lighted vehicles are from participating local businesses and organizations, and they really get into the holiday sprit with their creative decorations and themes. Learn more.

Holiday Inn Tour and Cookie Caper

Historic Hendersonville Inns welcome the public to experience the beauty of their holiday decor and lights. You'll also enjoy a cookie at each inn along the self-guided tour.

Tickets are required and can be purchased in advance at the Hendersonville Welcome Center.

During our stay at Echo Mountain Inn for Home for the Holidays, we really enjoyed the beautiful Christmas decorations. We really enjoyed taking photos of the gorgeous trees, lights, and buildings.

Holly Jolly Train Rides on Main Street

Take a holiday train ride on a mini-train rides along Main Street in downtown Hendersonville.  These rides are sure to be a big hit with the kids. They begin and end at the historic courthouse square.

During the same evening, you can also enjoy holiday craft vendors, displays, face painting, and a market with fresh backed goods and treats. Learn more.

Holiday Llamas

A popular holiday event is getting your photo taken with the holiday llamas from Ellaberry Lllama Farm. On December 21st from 5-8pm you can sit in the llama's Christmas sleigh and get a photo of you and your family with the llamas.

Tips for Visiting Home for the Holidays

During our visit to Home for the Holidays, we picked up a few tips to help make your experience even more enjoyable:

• If you plan to do the Peppermint Bear scavenger hunt, be sure to grab a brochure before you start. It has the section that needs to be punched, and will show you where all the participating merchants are.
• During many of the events, Main Street in downtown is closed. You'll need to park on Church Street, in a paid lot or the town parking garage. You'll need the ParkMobile app. Set it up before you head out to make your parking easy!
• Check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. The evening we were there, it was extremely cold. We wore layers, brought hand warmers, gloves and hats. 
• Eat before you arrive, or enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants - but make advanced reservations, as the restaurants in downtown are extremely busy. We enjoyed dinner at Shine later in the evening.
• For the tree lighting, the event begins at 6pm. Be there at least 30 minutes before, as it gets crowded quickly. There is plenty to do and live music to enjoy.
• If you live more than an hour away, we would recommend staying the night, so you have plenty of time to enjoy the activities and not have to rush. We highly recommend Echo Mountain Inn.

A ride on the Polar Express train ride in Bryson City, NC has been on our holiday bucket list for years. We're a little embarrassed to admit that we've never actually ridden this holiday train until this year (2024).  

We either waited too late to get tickets, or always had other things going on. But this year was different. We ordered our tickets early and booked a first-class train ride on the Polar Express for the 8:20pm ride.  Our ride for 2024 was on 11/13/2024.

We had an amazing time, and we're kicking ourselves for not riding it sooner!

Purchasing Tickets

Your first step to taking a ride on the Polar Express is booking your tickets, which should be done as early as possible. Tickets sell out quickly, especially for dates and times closer to Christmas.   

For 2025, the event begins on November 6 and runs through December 31, 2025.

Tickets are booked online at the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad website, and will be sent in an eTicket format to your mobile device and email.

Seating Class Options

You'll first want to pick a date and time that works for you. Then you'll need to choose the class of service you prefer. Classes offered include:

• First Class - Plush and comfortable furniture, large picture windows, and climate control for comfort. All guests receive hot cocoa in a souvenir ceramic mug, a cookie, surprise treat, and a souvenir tote. The first class cars are just gorgeous and really deliver a luxury experience. There are 4-seat and 2-seat options.
• Premium Crown Class - Windows that can open for fresh-air, ceiling fans, and heat for cooler evenings. These classic cars are very similar to the types of cars seen in the Polar Express movie. They have restored wooden in interiors, bench seats and tables. All guests will receive cocoa in a souvenir tumbler, a cookie, and a surprise treat.
• Crown Class - plush seating, large picture windows, and climate control for comfort. All guests will receive cocoa in a souvenir tumbler and a cookie 
• Coach Class - windows that can open for fresh air, ceiling fans, and heat for cooler evenings. All guests will receive cocoa and a cookie.

For all classes, Santa Claus will present each child with the first gift of Christmas; a silver bell from his sleigh. 

Steam or Diesel Locomotive

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad also has both steam and diesel engines. The steam locomotive only runs during the day and has more limited options on dates and times.   

We wanted to go at night so we could better see the lights, so we chose a diesel locomotive.

Tips for purchasing tickets:

• Again, get your tickets early. The event sells out very quickly each year.
• For the best views of the North Pole, sit on the left side of the train (farthest side from the station). But there are lights on both sides, and you can see from the right side as well.
• Purchase the parking pass option. It will allow you to park in the GSMRR all-day parking lot across from the station. Bryson City street parking is limited to 2-hours.

What to Wear?

All passengers, regardless of age, are encouraged to wear pajamas!

We did, and it made the experience more fun and enjoyable. It was fun to see everyone in their own unique and often matching PJs.

We do recommend either wearing layers or bringing a coat, though. It was in the 40s during our trip. Even the waiting area was pretty cool.   

The train cars are heated, but we didn't feel any heat during our trip. It was a bit chilly in the cars, so an extra jacket was nice to have.

What to Expect

We had watched a few videos and read some guides about the Polar Express train ride, but didn't know exactly what to expect. Here's the rundown without giving too much away:

• Fun staff and actors - The actors, from the conductors to the Hobo did a wonderful job engaging guests and making the whole train ride fun. They were also able to really make you feel like you were experiencing the whole Polar Express book and movie.
• Treats - Everyone gets hot chocolate and a chocolate chip cookie.  
• Music - You'll experience music and sounds from the Polar Express movie. We challenge you to not smile when the Hot Chocolate song comes on.
• A Visit from Santa - Santa boards the train and gives everyone a special gift
• Fun for all ages - While the ride is geared for children, adults have fun as well. We had no kids in our section for the ride, but still had a great time and some good laughs. The ride is full of serious moments, fun times, and, of course, some silliness along the way.
• The experience of a train ride - Not only do you experience the book and movie, but you get to ride on a real train! The whistle, the clacking of the cars as the train goes down the tracks all combine to make this a wonderful, fun, and historic experience.

Arrival and Boarding

We arrived about an hour before our train's departure time, mainly so we could record some extra video and explore a bit before the train ride. The POLAR EXPRESS begins boarding 30 minutes before the departure time.

We enjoyed walking the streets of Bryson City, NC, and see all the holiday lights. There is also a village area around the train station with shops and live music. Be sure to visit Uncle Bunky's Christmas Cottage, which is full of fun Christmas items.

We ate a home prior to arriving in Bryson City, since we're only 40 minutes away. There are a number of good restaurant options in Bryson City, and the train station itself serves some pretty good looking food as well.

About 30 minutes before your departure time, the POLAR EXPRESS will return from its prior run. The locomotive stops right in front of the station. There are signs all around that show what section you need to be at for boarding. Your seats and car are noted on your ticket.

The order is by seating class. First class is right behind the locomotive, following by crown class through to coach, which is on the end.

If you are in coach, it's a bit of a walk down to the end, so keep that in mind when boarding. The GSMRR also provides golf carts to assist passengers if needed. They additionally have devices for lifting those in wheelchairs onto the train cars.

Tickets are checked as you board, and it's the only time you will need them.

There is plenty of time to get lots of photos of the train in front of the station prior to boarding. The whole train is decorated in lights, and the locomotive as "Polar Express" on the side, making for some beautiful photo opportunities.

After taking some photos, we headed to our boarding location, and began our magical adventure on the Polar Express!

Riding the Polar Express

The train leaves promptly at the departure time, and heads in the direction of Dillsboro from Bryson City. You'll travel at a pretty slow pace from Bryson City to Whittier, NC, where the "North Pole" is located. The ride out takes about 40-45 minutes.

We chose to sit in first class to get the full experience, and to allow a little more room for our camera gear. Two young ladies were assigned to our section of the car, and they help us find our seats, which where two very comfortable chairs at a table next to a large window.

On our table was a souvenir bag, chocolate bar, and our large golden Polar Express tickets. The first-class car we were in was very roomy and just plain gorgeous, with a gold colored roof, large windows and plush seating.

Bryson City NC Travel GuideA photographer was walking around taking photos of passengers. You can purchase these later. Ours turned out pretty well. The full package for all the versions and digital copies was around $40.

After long whistle, the train began to move, and the show began as the two staff members came out introduced themselves and met everyone.   

Shortly after, we were asking if "We were in need of refreshment", to which we shouted "YES!" and the music and dancing began "Hot hot hot ... we got it ...". Well, you know the song, and our hot chocolate arrived on our tables, complete with thick whip cream topping.

During the ride, you'll experience many of the events from the book, including the train stopping due to caribou blocking the way. You'll have to chant loudly to help clear the way.  

You'll also get a visit from the mysterious hobo, who confirms everyone can see him before interacting.

The staff did a great job keeping everyone engaged, singing, and dancing during the ride. The skits are fun and humorous for all ages.

We even had a contest to see who could do the best "Ho ho ho" and the winner received a special cookie!

Just prior to reaching the North Pole, a recording of the author of Polar Express reads a portion of the story to you, as the staff holds a large picture version of the book.

The North Pole

The North Pole set is located on the left side of the train and features buildings with lights, a large Christmas tree, and of course, Santa and the Elves.

The train stops, and Santa boards the train to visit with everyone and gives everyone a gift, a silver bell.

Returning to Bryson City

After Santa boards, the train heads back to Bryson City. On the way back, you'll sing Christmas Carols and get a last visit from the Hobo.

The songs and laughter were a great way to wrap up our Polar Express train ride experience and a great way to kick off the Christmas and Holiday season!

Tips:

Here are a few tips we learned during our visit that we think you'll find helpful:

• The Smoky Mountain Train Museum is included with your tickets - Be sure to visit before or after your ride. The museum has model trains and exhibits to explore. Kids can even press buttons to control the trains.
• The Polar Express trains run regardless of weather
• You can change your tickets at least 48 hours in advance for a fee and if other times/dates are available.
• Arrive an hour before your departure time. The train leaves promptly at the departure time and begins boarding 30 minutes before.
• For passengers requiring help or with accessibility needs, call early to let them know, and make them aware on your arrival.    
• Dress in layers and bring a jacket. This is a winter event, and it can be very cold and even snow!

Waynesville Christmas Parade

The annual Waynesville Christmas parade is one of the best we've ever attended. The parade goes through downtown Waynesville and begins at 6:00 pm on December 1st, 2025. This may seem a little late to some, but starting the parade at 6 pm lets the colorful lights really shine, making for pure Christmas magic.

The parade is full of colorful floats, marching bands, local police and fire departments, Jeeps, tractors, dancers, and much more! The highlight of the parade is at the end when Santa makes an appearance.

Be sure to get there early to get the best spots and bring some chairs and blankets!

Holiday Fun Tours at Winchester Creek Farm

Winchester Creek Farm is a wonderful local Alpaca and miniature animal farm you can tour. The farm is open for tours year-round but also has several yearly events, including Holiday Farm Tours.

During Holiday Farm Tours, the farm is all decked out for the holidays. During the holiday tours, you can see the decorations, visit with Santa, and write and mail a letter to Santa. You'll also receive holiday cookies and candy canes! Granny's House is also open, with lots of great (and unique) holiday gifts!

Smoky Mountain Christmas (previously called: A Night Before Christmas)

Smoky Mountain Christmas in Waynesville, NC is a festive way to celebrate the holidays. This annual holiday tradition is held in downtown Waynesville, against the backdrop of hundreds of luminaries lining the old brick sidewalks. The trees and businesses are full of twinkling lights, red velvet ribbons, garland and bows.

While visiting, you can enjoy carolers, live music, Santa and Mrs. Claus, horse-drawn old-fashioned wagon rides, and a Living Nativity scene sponsored by First Baptist Church. 

Shops, galleries, and restaurants are all open. Some even have musicians and entertainers performing on the streets outside.

When: December 13, 2025 6-9pm

Christmas Season at the HART Theatre

A true local favorite here in Waynesville is the HART Theatre. This semi-professional community theatre consistently puts on high-quality productions featuring talented performers from across the region. Throughout the year, HART’s stage is full of energy, creativity, and memorable performances.

During the Christmas season, HART becomes even more magical, offering festive shows and family-friendly events that have become a holiday tradition for many.

The 2025 Christmas lineup includes:

• Saturday, December 6, from 12–4pm: Santa is coming to HART Theatre!
  • For $10, guests receive time with Santa, one Polaroid ornament, two hot chocolates, and unlimited photos with your phone.

Pick out a live Christmas tree

The Waynesville, NC, area is one of the most popular locations to choose and cut a live Christmas tree in Western NC. The area around Waynesville offers several very nice Christmas tree farms. A visit to these farms to browse the fields as a family, and choose your own Christmas tree to bring home, is a holiday adventure in itself.

Many of the farms that allow you to browse the farm and pick out your tree also have gift options and wreaths for sale, and offer hayrides, hot chocolate, and other activities.

Go shopping in historic Downtown Waynesville, NC

Not only is downtown Waynesville beautiful and historic, it's also full of wonder shops, restaurants, and art galleries as well.   There are many locally owned shops, that provide unique gift items for the holidays.  Waynesville is also home to a Mast General Store as well. 

 While browsing the shops, you can stop and grab food, coffee, or a treat at one of the many restaurants as well.  

During the holiday season, Waynesville is beautifully decorated for the holidays and will make your visit pure Christmas magic.

Visit Lake Junaluska

While technically not part of Waynesville NC, Lake Junaluska is just outside of it.   Lake Junaluska is a gorgeous lake and retreat that is open to the public.    The lake provides a number of outdoor activities, restaurants, hotels, and things to see and do.

Lake Junaluska decorates for the holidays and has a number of unique and fun activities to enjoy, including candlelight services, wagon rides, caroling, and more.  

Tweetsie Christmas

An annual event at Tweetsie Railroad each year, beginning in November and running through December is Tweetsie Christmas.   This family-friendly holiday event offers holiday fun that your entire family will enjoy.  

This wonderful Christmas event features a nighttime train ride with a 3-mile loop lined with beautiful Christmas lights.   You can also enjoy live Christmas shows, amusement rides, a visit with Santa in the Gingerbread House, holiday treats, and hot chocolate and s'mores over outdoor fires.

Boone Christmas Parade

Many small towns in the mountains have annual Christmas parades and Boone NC is no exception.   Boone's annual Christmas Parade proceeds through Downtown Boone along King Street.   Local organizations, businesses, law enforcement, firefighters, and local bands all put on their holiday best to celebrate the season. 

The parade features floats, costumes, performances, and marchers! Stay until the end where Santa Claus himself make an appearance!  While visiting, enjoy all the shops and restaurants that are open as well.

For 2022, the Parade is on December 10 at 2 pm on King Street in Downtown Boone.

Get a Live Christmas Tree

The High Country of North Carolina and Boone itself are well known for Christmas Tree Farms.   People from all over North Carolina and Virginia drive to the Boone area to pick a Christmas tree each year, from one of the many Choose and Cut tree farms.

The farms generally offer Fraser Firs in many different sizes and shapes.  The farms also often offer garlands, wreaths, gifts, and hot chocolate.   Some offer hay rides and other activities as well.

Nothing beats the look and smell of a natural North Carolina Christmas Tree in your home for the holidays!    Popular Christmas Tree Farms near Boone include: Circle C Tree Farms, C and J Christmas Tree Farm, Appalachian Christmas Mountain Farms, and Clawson's Choose and Cut

Apple Hill Farm Christmas Celebration

Apple Hill Farm is a working Alpaca Farm, located just outside of Boone NC.   During the Holidays, the farm is decorated for the holidays, and provides special tours of the farm.  Tours generally run about 45 minutes long and offer an interactive educational experience as you learn about the animals.   Your tour focuses on how all of the animals have a job and purpose on the farm. Many are rescues and have cool stories as well!

A visit to Apple Hill Farm is a treat anytime during the year, but extra special during the holidays!

Festive First Friday and Solar Tree Lighting

Each year, the town of Boone NC begins Festive First Friday and the lighting of the Solar Christmas tree on the first Friday in December.  The events are held at the historic Jones House in Downtown Boone.  The event features carriage rides, marshmallow snowball fights, carolers, holiday treats, and more!   Shops and Art Galleries in downtown Boone are also open.  You can even meet Mrs. Claus, and write letters to Santa!

An Appalachian Christmas

Mountain Home Music in Boone NC honors musicians of the Appalachian region and has a number of music and art events throughout the year.  Mountain Home Music closes its season each year with a free Christmas concert.  

Instead of charging admission, a collection is taken and the proceeds go to Santa’s Toy Box and the Hospitality House.

Go Shopping at the original Mast General Store

Just a short drive from downtown Boone NC, is Valle Crucis, the home to the original Mast General Store.  This store will take you back to Christmases of many years ago, and to more simple times.  The store is wonderful to visit year-round, but extra special and beautiful during the holidays.  

The store is decored for the holidays, and just magical.  You can also do your shopping and enjoy the special holiday and Christmas sections of the store.   You can even visit with Santa while visiting.  Other Holiday activities include Christmas book signing, caroling, and holiday-themed scavenger hunts.

Crazy Christmas at Mystery Hill

Mystery Hill is one of the most unique attractions we've ever visited, and it's lots of fun for the whole family as well.  You visit during the Holiday season for Crazy Christmas at Mystery Hill!

Many of us have wondered how Santa gets around to all the good boys and girls each year, in just one night!?  Turns out, according to Mystery Hill, Santa uses gravitational vortexes just like the one found at Mystery Hill!   Turns out though, some mischievous elves have messed up Santa's vortex generator, and sent elves flying everywhere!

When visiting, you can help rescue the elves?   Or maybe join in to throw snowballs to help prevent a Yeti attack?  You can also just relax in the Christmas Lights walk as well.

In addition to all of these fun and unique holiday activities, you can enjoy all of the great things normally found at Mystery Hill as well!  Crazy Christmas at Mystery Hill runs from November 25 - December 23rd for 2022.

Of course, the winter brings the holiday season and snow!   App Ski Mountain in Boone NC is a well-known and popular destination for skiing!  On Christmas day from 1 pm to 10 pm, App Ski Mountain is open for Christmas Day Skiing.    Proceeds for the day go to a fundraiser for the Appalachian Ski Mountain's ski patrol.

Prices for trees are by the foot and vary depending on the farm, location, and ammenities provided by the farm.  Many also have hot coffee, hot chocolate and hot apple cider available for visitors.  

Here are the 4 Best Christmas Tree Farms near Asheville NC.  All of these are within an hours drive.

Boyd's Christmas Tree Farm Waynesville NC

One of the largest and most well known Christmas Tree Farms near Asheville NC, and in Western NC is Boyd's Christmas Tree Farm, just outside of Maggie Valley NC.  Boyd's has been providing Christmas trees to families for over 100 years,.

When visiting Boyd's, you can choose from pre-cut trees or walk through the farm and choose your own.  The Boyd's staff will cut it, bundle it, and tie it to your vehicle.  You can even cut it yourself if you want, using a Bow Saw.

While visiting Boyd's, you can enjoy some hot chocolate or cider and browse and purchase decorations, wreaths and other gifts.   You can even see Santa!   Boyd's provides paved parking, restrooms, and handicap facilities.

Your dogs are also welcome on the farm but must be on a leash.  

Mehaffey Tree Farm Waynesville NC

Mehaffey Tree Farm is located near Maggie Valley NC, and has been family owned and operated since 1984.   The Farm is where we have personally gotten our trees each year for the past 14 years.  They are our friends, and neighbors (see our video from a past visit).

The Mehaffey famly opens their farm to families for Choose & Cut each year in November through December.  They take pride in growing their trees and providing the highest quality trees for their customers.

When you visit, you can browse their manicured farm and fields to select your own tree.   The farm and surrounding scenery area gorgeous.  The Mehaffey's and their staff are super friendly and helpful.

While there, enjoy some hot cider and hot chocolate, while picking out your tree, or waiting for it to be loaded on your vehicle.  They are also dog friendly, but pets must be on a leash.

Smoky Mountain Tree Farm Waynesville NC

Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree farm is a family owned and working farm, located in the beautiful mountains near Maggie Valley and Waynesville NC. The farm is located within 30 minutes of Asheville NC.

Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree farm sells Fraser Fir in all sizes.  They also sell wreaths, garland, and pre-cut trees for the Christmas Season as well.

The farm is Choose and Cut, meaning you can enjoy browsing the fields to find the perfect tree to bring home, and the Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree farm will cut it, bale it, and tie it to your vehicle for transport.

The farm is easily recognizable by it's signature red "7-Up Barn", that has been featured in many photos, including our own above.

1 - See the Gatlinburg Christmas Lights

Both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge go all out for the holidays, with millions of Christmas lights and light displays.   Both towns begin the season early and turn the lights on in early November.  The lights fill both towns and even the merchants and local businesses decorate as well.   The large light displays feature various holiday scenes, wildlife, and local history and landmarks.  

2 - Visit Dollywood for A Smoky Mountain Christmas

Our personal favorite Christmas event in the Smoky Mountains is A Smoky Mountain Christmas at Dollywood.  This magical event begins in early November and lasts until the end of the year.  Smoky Mountain Christmas is one of Dollywood's oldest and most popular events, and for good reason.

Dollywood goes all out, decorating the park with more than 6 million Christmas lights, the nightly parade of Many Colors, Santa Claus, Rudolph, Christmas shows, and a Nativity Story.  You'll also find lots of holiday treats as well.  Oh, and don't forget a ride on the Dollywood Express for a magical Christmas train ride.

3- View the Christmas Lists from the Gatlinburg Space Needle

The popular and very noticeable Space Needle provides outstanding panoramic views of surrounding Gatlinburg, and all of the lights and festivities during the holiday season.  At 407 feet and with 360-degree views, the Needle provides incredible and unique views of all the Gatlinburg Christmas lights.

4 - Attend the Christmas in the Smokies Bluegrass Festival

Join hundreds of Bluegrass fans in Pigeon Forge to enjoy the sights and sounds of Christmas at the Christmas in the Smokies Bluegrass Festival.   The event is at the Smoky Mountain Convention center and features an amazing lineup of country and bluegrass bands and artists.   

At the Christmas in the Smokies Bluegrass Festival in Pigeon Forge, the sights and sounds of Christmas come alive. Hundreds of fans crowd the Smoky Mountain Convention Center to hear an incredible lineup of bands and artists. It’s a unique holiday celebration that bluegrass fans won’t want to miss.

5 - Go skiing, snow tubing, and skating

Ober Gatlinburg is a mountain top Amusement park that sits high above Gatlinburg TN on Ober Mountain.  If you're looking for a guaranteed White Christmas, Ober Gatlinburg is the place for you.   You'll be able to have tons of snowy fun, regardless of the weather in or around Gatlinburg.  

The snow-making machines of Ober Gatlinburg have you ... "covered" and provide lots of snow to enjoy.   You can enjoy the snowy ski slopes skiing and snowboarding, snow tube, and even ice skating.  They even have a mountain coaster and icy bumper cars.

You'll arrive on the mountain top via the Aerial Tramway from Downtown Gatlinburg.  If you prefer to stay indoors and warm, they have plenty of indoor activities as well.

6 - Visit one of the many Christmas and Holiday themed shows

Both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are full of popular, entertaining, and themed shows.  Many of these theaters do special shows just for the holidays, with a Christmas and holiday season focus.  The shows typically blend the theater themed shows with a holiday spin that will really get you into the holiday spirit!

7 - See the Gatlinburg Christmas Parade - Fantasy of Lights 

For 2022, the Gatlinburg Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade begins at 7:30 pm on December 2nd.   This beautiful small-town parade features balloons, floats, high school marching bands, and more!    At 7:25 pm, just before the parade begins, the Gatlinburg Christmas tree grand illumination ceremony will be held.

The Parade begins at Baskins Creek By-Pass, travels to Traffic Light #3, turns south onto the Parkway, and ends at Traffic Light #10.

8 -Go Shopping!

Of course, both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are full of various stores to find pretty much anything you need for that special Christmas gift, but they also have a few stores and shopping centers that are Christmas Themed.

A Christmas Place

Inside the Christmas shop, located in Pigeon Forge, it's Christmas time year around!  A Christmas Place is one of the largest Christmas stores in the south, and full of ornaments, decorations, lights, music, and more.  They even wrap all gift purchases.

The Village in Gatlinburg

The large shopping center, located in downtown Gatlinburg is popular year-round with visitors, but at Christmas becomes magical and beautifully decorated for the holidays.   All of the shops in The Village in Gatlinburg are decorated with garland, lights and surrounded by Christmas trees.   The Village becomes a Christmas setting, straight out of a Christmas book.

Santa’s Claus-et

Visit the largest Christmas store in Gatlinburg, Santa's Claus-et.   Visit them to shop, and pick out unique gifts for family and friends.  While there, enjoy some food samples as well.  The store has toys, ornaments, games, decorations, and even Christmas trees.  You kids can even enjoy a visit with Santa and get a photo.

Apple Barn's Christmas and Candleshop

Another very popular Christmas shop in the Smoky Mountains is in Apple Barn Village in Sevierville.  The Christmas and Candle Shop is full of Christmas-themed items including 30 different scents of candles that are made right in the store.  As you shop, you'll be surrounded by twinkling Christmas lights, Christmas trees, and tons of holiday decor.  

Winterfest at The Island

You’ll love visiting The Island in Pigeon Forge during the Christmas season! Not only can you do some holiday shopping at the different stores, but you can enjoy Christmas fun for the whole family too. Enjoy millions of bright Christmas lights, walk through the 40-foot Christmas tree, or listen to the sounds of the Christmas carolers.

You can even get photos with Santa Claus when you visit! Of course, you can also do all the other things you love at The Island, like ride the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel and see the Island Show Fountain’s performance of water dance and light.

10 - Have Breakfast with Santa at the Old Mill

For a special morning treat, take the family over to the Old Mill Restaurant in Pigeon Forge for Breakfast with Santa.  Beginning in early December, Santa visits The Old Mill Restaurant to eat some breakfast, spread some Christmas cheer, and spend time with children and families.  Reservations are required, for details, visit the Old Mill website.

11 - See Lights Over Gatlinburg at the SkyLift Park

Beginning November 14th and running through January 31st, you can visit the most popular light shows in the Smoky Mountains.  The entire Sky Lift park is covered with Christmas decorations and lights, including dancing Christmas trees, a 30foot tall multicolored Christmas tree, and a 300-foot tunnel of lights!   

The amazing Christmas event runs daily and is included with your SkyLift Park admissions ticket. 

12 - Explore Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland 

Located in Sevierville, near Gatlinburg, is a beautiful drive-through Christmas light show by Shadrack's Christmas Wonderland.  The best part?  You can see all of these beautiful lights from the warm comfort of your vehicle!

Thousands of Christmas lights are synced to music (yes you can hear it in your car).   While there, you can also find many different interactive activities, a petting zoo, pony rides, and visit Santa's Workshop.  

Don't forget some snacks from Santa's Workshop as well, including hot chocolate and coffee.
