There are many great places to grab a drink in the area, but we only recommend the ones we have actually spent time at ourselves. We have listed these in alphabetical order so you can easily find what you are looking for, rather than ranking them by preference. Each of these spots offers a different vibe and menu, so we honestly don't have a specific preference. It all depends on what you're looking for. They are all fantastic!

Oklawaha Brewing Company

Located just a block off Main Street, Oklawaha Brewing Company is a staple of the downtown scene. The name itself is a tribute to local history, named after the Oklawaha Creek that runs through downtown.

Owner Joe Dinan took over the brewery in 2020, bringing experience from heavy hitters like Goose Island and Wicked Weed. Joe’s focus has been on making Oklawaha a "community-first" hub, and you can really feel that when you walk in.

The beer program here is impressive because of its commitment to local ingredients. They source about 50% of their barley from River Bend Malthouse in Asheville, ensuring the beer has a true Western North Carolina flavor. They are best known for their German-style lagers and hop-forward IPAs.

When Jenn and I stopped in during one of our Hendersonville adventures, we really enjoyed the location and the live music. We heard from quite a few locals that this is their go-to hangout because the vibe is upbeat but still casual.

Oklawaha is very welcoming to families and even keeps board games, coloring books, and chalk on hand to keep the kids entertained. While the "Sunflower Kitchen" presence means dogs aren't allowed inside the taproom, they are warmly welcomed on the patio. They even keep dog bowls and treats behind the bar—just ask the bartender!

Packa's Place - The BARn

Located out in Horse Shoe, Packa's Place is a relatively new addition that has quickly become a community favorite. "The BARn" is their on-site beer garden, and the family behind it saw a real need for a space where the community could gather and enjoy the natural beauty of the Hendersonville area. It has a very relaxed, rural feel that makes it a great alternative to the busier downtown spots.

While they are a beer garden rather than a full-scale brewery, they pride themselves on a carefully curated selection of local craft brews, ciders, and seltzers. It’s a great place to sample several different Henderson County beers in one spot. They host rotating food trucks to provide a variety of dining options, but we always recommend checking their social media for the day's schedule. It is the kind of place where you can really slow down and appreciate the mountain scenery.

This location was designed specifically with families in mind. The BARn is an open-air space that allows kids to enjoy the outdoors while parents relax. It is also very dog-friendly, making it a popular weekend destination for locals who want to bring their pups along for some fresh air and a cold drink.

Southern Appalachian Brewery

Southern Appalachian was one of the first breweries to help build the craft beer scene here, opening its permanent Hendersonville home in 2011. Founded by husband-and-wife team Andy and Kelly Cubbin, the brewery actually started in Rosman back in 2003 before moving to the historic Seventh Avenue District. Being one of the "pioneers" in town, they’ve maintained a loyal local following for over a decade.

Their brewing philosophy centers on high-quality, small-batch ales. You’ll always find their staples like the Copperhead Amber Ale and the Black Bear Stout, which are known for being consistent, clean, and flavorful. We visited during our feature on the Winter Ramble when Darren Nicholson was performing. The brewery is small, but it feels intimate and friendly. The night we were there, it was standing room only because of the music!

This brewery is very family-oriented and dog-friendly. You will often see well-behaved dogs on leashes in their spacious outdoor courtyard. They also sell soda and bottled water for the under-21 crowd and non-drinkers, making it a comfortable spot for everyone to hang out while enjoying the rotating food trucks.

Trailside Brewing Co.

Trailside Brewing Co. is located in the Lennox Park area and is one of our personal favorites. The building itself is a piece of Hendersonville history—it was originally a hosiery mill built in 1915 and later served as the town’s first Lowe’s hardware store. Owners David and Colleen Schnitzer have done a beautiful job "breathing new life" into the old factory space, preserving the industrial character while making it a vibrant community hub.

The beer at Trailside is made with a lot of intention, focusing on clean, classic styles. They also have a fantastic cocktail program for those who might want something other than a pint. It is located right alongside the Ecusta Trail, making it a fantastic stop for food and a cold beer after you have been out walking or biking. We attended a fantastic craft show here during one of our visits and really enjoyed the layout.

Trailside is both pet and family-friendly, with plenty of room in their large indoor and outdoor seating areas. While they don't have playground equipment, it is a very common spot for families to bring a board game and hang out by the fire or enjoy the live music. It’s a great, low-stress environment for both kids and dogs.

Bonus: Jeter Mountain Farm - No Beer but fantastic Ciders

If you want to head out into the country, Jeter Mountain Farm is a spot we always enjoy, especially during the harvest season. This property has a deep history, with the Hunsader family bringing over 150 years of farming experience to these 400 acres. What started as an equestrian farm was transformed starting in 2005 into the massive orchard and destination it is today. You can still see the history in the architecture—the taproom and market are housed in beautifully renovated barns that once served as horse stalls and haylofts.

While they don't brew beer, they are famous for their small-batch hard ciders made from apples grown right on the property. Their cider-making process is truly "field to pint," with the juice pressed in their own on-site facility. They offer a range of flavors, often mixing their base cider with other fruits grown on the farm, like blackberries and grapes.

When Jenn and I visit, we usually head straight for the 1813 Smokehouse located inside the market. The pulled pork and brisket are excellent, and there is plenty of room to sit and enjoy the mountain air. It is a true farm experience that feels like a real getaway from the hustle of downtown.

This is one of the most kid-friendly spots in the county. They have a massive indoor playground area that is a huge hit with families. For your furry friends, pups are welcome on the farm grounds on a leash. However, keep in mind they aren't allowed in the orchards, on the wagons, or inside the buildings, so plan accordingly if you are bringing your dog along.

Arriving at Devil's Bathtub

Getting to the Devil’s Bathtub trailhead feels remote, especially toward the end. As you arrive, you'll note a very large parking area and a gorgeous greenish-blue swimming hole next to it. This is not the main parking area, but the overflow parking area. We highly recommend stopping here, as it makes for some beautiful photos. During the summer, this is a popular swimming hole as well, and there are rope swings.

To get to the main parking area, turn left onto the dirt road directly across from the parking area and head up towards the trailhead. This stretch of road is gravel and can be rough. While 4-wheel drive and high clearance aren’t required, it can be helpful depending on conditions. It was in pretty good condition during our visit.

The Trailhead and Parking

Parking is the main lot is limited on busy days, and this hike has grown in popularity. During the summer and on weekends, arriving early in the day helps avoid crowded parking and heavier foot traffic on the trail.

If this lot is full, you'll need to park in the overflow parking area near the swimming hole. This adds 1-mile to the hike.

From the parking area, signage points you toward the Devil’s Fork Trail, which leads to Devil’s Bathtub. You'll head up a set of stairs, you can't miss it.

On the Trail: What to Expect

The hike starts with a climb up some stairs, and then a gradual descent from the parking area and quickly introduces you to the first of several creek crossings. Depending on recent rainfall, you may be able to rock-hop across some of them, but it’s common to get wet feet at least once. During our visit, we were able to rock hop all of the creeks, and never got wet. Your mileage may vary.

Much of the trail follows Devil’s Fork Creek, winding through a shaded hardwood forest. Expect exposed roots, rocky sections, and narrow footpaths that require steady footing. After rain, some sections can be slick, especially where water flows directly across the trail.

You will reach a split in the trail, where going left will take you on the shortest path to Devil's Bathtub, while going right will take you on the longer loop hike. We went left for the 4-mile round-trip out and back hike.

As you work your way deeper into the hike, the sound of rushing water stays with you almost the entire time. Even before reaching the bathtub, there are small cascades and pools along the creek that make this a scenic and enjoyable hike.

Near the end, the trail will go out onto the unique rock formations in this area, and you'll have to climb some rock to get up to the bathtub itself. The rock around the bathtub is smooth and can be slippery, so take your time and watch your footing.

The bathtub is a deep, circular basin carved into solid rock by centuries of moving water. On a hot summer day, the water is cold and incredibly refreshing, making it an ideal place to take a break before heading back out the way you came. The water has a unique greenish/blue hue that makes for some amazing photos with the right lighting.

We arrived at Devil's Bathtub around 4:30 in the afternoon on a summer evening. The lighting was not good. We suspect the best lighting for photos of the bathtub itself would be in the morning.

Tips for a Great Hike

After our amazing hike out to see the Devil's Bathtub, we learned a few tips that we think you'll find helpful:

• Wear shoes with good grip and expect wet conditions. Creek crossings are unavoidable.
• Bring plenty of water, especially in warmer months. The terrain makes this hike feel longer than the mileage suggests.
• Start early if hiking in summer or on weekends to avoid crowds and limited parking.  We hiked on a weekday and had the trail pretty much to ourselves.
• Take your time near the bathtub. Wet rock and smooth stone can be slick.
• Pack out everything you bring in to help keep this area clean and enjoyable for others.
• If you plan to swim, bringing a small towel and a change of clothes makes the hike back more comfortable.
• Check the weather and come prepared. There were storms in the area the day or our hike, but a low chance of rain. Of course, it rained right where we were hiking and we got soaked (see our video).  We recommend having a spare set of clothing in your vehicle, just in case.

Our Take

This hike ended up being one of those adventures that reminded us why certain places stay on our list for so long. Hiking Devil’s Bathtub in August turned it into a true summer adventure. The heat made the shaded forest and creek crossings especially welcome, and the cold water at the end felt like a well-earned reward.

We loved that this hike felt a little rugged without being overwhelming. The constant sound of water, the repeated crossings, and the final approach to the bathtub made it feel more immersive than many hikes of similar length. It’s not a trail you rush through, and that’s part of what makes it special.

Devil’s Bathtub isn’t a beginner hike, and it’s not one we’d recommend taking lightly. But if you’re comfortable with uneven terrain, wet conditions, and a bit of effort, it delivers a memorable payoff. For us, it absolutely lived up to the photos we’d seen for years, and it’s a hike we’re glad we finally made the time to experience.

In our video, we take you along our walk through the Dahlia Ridge Trail System so you can see what it’s actually like on the ground, including the Mill Pond area and some of the quieter wooded sections. We hike a whole loop around and though the HCC campus.

Hit play to hike it with us, get a feel for the terrain and trail vibe, and decide which loops you want to tackle when you go. If you’re local, it’s a great “quick outdoor fix” spot when you don’t have time for a longer drive or bigger hike.

Getting to the Dahlia Ridge Trails

Located in Clyde, NC, the Dahlia Ridge Trail System is incredibly easy to access, but because it is located on an active college campus, knowing exactly where to park is key.

Where to Park:There are two primary ways to access the trail system depending on which section you want to tackle first:

• Primary Parking (Main Entrance): As you enter the main HCC campus on Sawmill Drive, take your very first left into the parking lot. This is a central spot that puts you in close proximity to the main trail kiosks and the campus's famous Mill Pond.
• Secondary Parking: For a slightly different approach, you can continue past Sawmill Drive on Jones Cove Road and turn left onto Armory Drive. There is a smaller parking area on the far side of the Mill Pond that offers a quick connection to the trail network.

Any white-marked parking spot is open to the public. Do not park in yellow, blue, or purple spaces.

Finding the Trailhead: Once you park at the main lot on Sawmill Drive, look for the large wooden trail kiosks near the Hemlock building. These provide a full map of the system. The trails are well-marked with color-coded blazes, but we recommend snapping a photo of the map before you head into the more wooded sections.

Restrooms: Public restrooms are located at the Ironwood facility, near the millpond and smaller parking area.  Addtionally, HCC building restrooms are open to the public during school hours. This does not apply to HEC (Haywood Early College).

Know Before You Go

While the Dahlia Ridge Trail System is located on the Haywood Community College campus, the college graciously keeps these trails open to the public. It is a wonderful community resource, but do keep in mind that since it is a school, you'll want to be mindful of students and campus activities.

The trails are also pet-friendly, provided your four-legged hiking partners stay on a leash. It’s a perfect spot for a local dog walk that feels a bit more adventurous than a standard sidewalk stroll.

Hiking the Dahlia Ridge Loop: Our Experience

While you can jump on the trail system from several points on campus, Jenn and I started at the official starting point near the Hemlock Building and the Mill Pond. We began by walking around the Mill Pond—which is easily the highlight and most scenic attraction of the entire system—before catching the Mill Pond Connector. You’ll find this near the small parking area by the Ironwood facility.

From there, the trail transitions from a casual stroll to a true hike. You’ll cross the road and a small bridge, heading straight into the woods. We followed the winding Copperhead Trail, which features a series of switchbacks. This was the only section where we experienced a real workout with some elevation gain, though we would still categorize the overall hike as easy to moderate.

The Copperhead Trail eventually feeds into the Kingfisher Trail. This section feels like a deep-woods escape, with natural paths that can be a bit muddy after a rain. Finally, we connected to the Bobcat Trail, the main campus loop, which transitioned back into paved sidewalks and flat gravel as we headed back toward the parking area. Our total loop was about 1.5 miles.

The variety of the terrain is what makes this loop so engaging. In one afternoon, we experienced:

• The Scenery: The Mill Pond is incredibly peaceful and a must-see for photographers.
• The Art: As you loop through the main campus, keep your eyes peeled for the unique art installations. We especially enjoyed the wireframe bobcat and the resonating bell.
• The Terrain: It’s rare to find a trail that seamlessly blends flat gravel, rugged forest floor, and paved campus walkways.

Tips for a Great Hike

Here are a few tips we learned during our visit and hike that will help make your visit more enjoyable:

• Footwear: Special hiking gear isn't strictly needed for the campus sections, but if you're planning on hiking the more remote areas like Copperhead or Kingfisher, good hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended as these natural trails can be muddy.
• Water: We recommend bringing some water along, especially for the wooded switchback sections.
• Navigation: The trails are well-marked, but we still recommend downloading the hiking trails map to your phone for easy reference.
• Safety: For safety, there are emergency response markers all through the trail with unique codes. In the event of an emergency, these allow first responders to accurately locate you in the woods.
• Leave No Trace: The trails are open to the public, so please always practice the principles of Leave No Trace, so locals and visitors can continue to enjoy these fantastic trails.

Our Take

Jenn and I really enjoyed our time on the Dahlia Ridge trails. To be fair, these trails aren't as remote or rugged as some mountain hikes, like you would find in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

You also won't find a significant point of interest like a breathtaking waterfall. BUT, they are a great option for local hiking, walking and running.  Much like the popular trails at Lake Junaluska.

It is definitely worth the short drive from Waynesville. It is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy some local art, and get some exercise in a beautiful, quiet setting.

Our Picks as Locals

You really can’t go wrong with any of Waynesville’s coffee shops—each one brings something a little different, and all of them serve a solid cup of coffee. But if we had to pick our favorites based on different situations, here’s how we’d break it down:

Orchard Coffee is our go-to when we’re downtown or simply craving some of the best coffee in Waynesville. Their drinks are consistently excellent, and the bright, small-town vibe is hard to beat.

Caffeine & Chaos is our pick for families with kids. It’s fun, welcoming, and full of creative treats that keep everyone happy.

Panacea is perfect when you want to relax, chill out, or get some work done. The cozy atmosphere, creekside seating, and great coffee make it an easy place to settle in for a while.

Blue Ghost Outpost is ideal if you’re heading toward Asheville, Cataloochee Valley, or anywhere off I-40. It’s convenient, friendly, and serves fantastic coffee that’s perfect for the road.

No matter where you choose to go, you’ll find great coffee, welcoming people, and a little slice of Waynesville charm.

Panacea Coffeehouse, Cafe & Roastery

Panacea is one of the most popular coffeehouses in Waynesville, and it’s easy to see why. Set inside an old warehouse in the historic Frog Level district, the space has a warm, rustic feel that pairs perfectly with a good cup of coffee. It’s the kind of place where you immediately want to slow down, grab a table, and stay a while.

Jenn and I have stopped in many times over the years—sometimes for coffee and breakfast before heading out on a mountain adventure, other times to sit by the creek or just get a little work done. It’s one of those spots that fits whatever kind of morning you’re having.

They serve a full menu of handcrafted coffee and tea drinks, along with fresh baked goods and light food options like sandwiches and salads. Everything is simple, fresh, and consistently good.

Panacea is also a working roastery, and you can often catch the aroma of beans roasting in-house. Whether you’re sipping a latte on the back deck by the creek or picking up a bag of their locally roasted beans to brew at home, the quality really stands out.

With its cozy atmosphere, creekside seating, and friendly staff, Panacea remains one of our go-to coffee spots in Waynesville.

Orchard Coffee

Orchard Coffee is a small, bright, and welcoming café in downtown Waynesville with a warm, small-town vibe that we really enjoy. It’s an easy stop while exploring Main Street, and we’ve dropped in many times for a latte and something fresh from their bakery case.

They’re passionate about coffee, and it shows—from the quality of the drinks to the beautiful latte art they’re known for. Orchard serves a full selection of coffee and tea options, along with made-from-scratch baked goods and light food. Everything feels crafted with care.

A few of our go-to items are their lattes, scones, and the strawberry toast, which is always a favorite. It’s a relaxed spot to sit for a bit, enjoy the natural light, and take in the downtown scenery.

Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters

Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters is a long-time local favorite in the historic Hazelwood area of Waynesville. This small, locally owned shop has a loyal following, thanks to its cozy atmosphere and the rich smell of freshly roasted coffee that seems to drift out onto the sidewalk. As coffee lovers, it’s hard for us to walk by without stopping in.

They roast their beans in-house and source from small coffee farmers around the world, focusing on high-quality, ethically sourced beans. Their lineup includes everything from light to dark roasts, flavored coffees, espresso, and decaf options. Whether you like something bold or something smooth, they’ve got a blend that hits the spot.

Inside, the shop has a warm and inviting feel—perfect for enjoying a cup at a quiet table or grabbing something to go. Over the years, we’ve always found their staff to be friendly and knowledgeable, and their coffee consistently great.

They also offer a variety of teas, pastries, and baked goods, and if you’re not local, you can even order their fresh-roasted beans online to enjoy at home.

Blue Ghost Outpost

Blue Ghost Outpost is the newest coffee shop to open in the Waynesville area, and it has quickly become one of our favorites—especially since it’s the closest spot to our home. Located in the Jonathan Creek area near I-40, it’s the perfect place to grab a great cup of coffee before heading into the mountains, driving over to Cataloochee Valley, or jumping on the interstate for a day adventure.

They serve excellent coffee along with a selection of fresh baked breakfast items, all made with care and perfect for a quick but satisfying start to the morning. Jenn and I have stopped in a few times now, and we’ve really enjoyed both the drinks and the food—simple, fresh, and really well done.

The cafe offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and parking is easy, which makes it a convenient stop whether you’re staying local or passing through. With its friendly vibe, great coffee, and prime location, Blue Ghost Outpost is a fantastic addition to Waynesville’s growing coffee community.

Dillsboro Chocolate Factory

Dillsboro Chocolate Factory may be best known for its handmade chocolates and sweet treats, but it’s also a surprisingly great spot to grab a warm cup of coffee while exploring downtown Waynesville. We’ve stopped in a few times on chilly days, and that first sip of hot coffee always hits the spot—especially when paired with something sweet from their display case.

The shop has a cozy, inviting feel, with the smell of chocolate and fresh confections filling the air. While their coffee menu is simple, it’s consistently good and perfect for warming up as you stroll through downtown or take a break from shopping.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, this is a fun place to pause for a few minutes, get warm, and enjoy a treat. It may not be a traditional coffeehouse, but it’s absolutely worth a stop when you want a comforting drink and a little something extra.

Getting to Biltmore, Parking, and Shuttles

Biltmore is easy to reach, but Christmas crowds make planning important. Most guests enter through the main gate in Biltmore Village. From there, it takes about 10–20 minutes to reach the parking areas depending on traffic.

For Biltmore House, most visitors park in the general lots and either walk to the house or take a shuttle. Lots A and B are park and walk and are closest to the house.  Lots C (for RVs) and E (Accessible) and offer shuttle service to the house.

Shuttles run continuously, but lines can form on busy days, so arriving early helps everything feel more relaxed. 

Antler Hill Village has its own parking lot and generally doesn’t require a shuttle.  You can also take a shuttle to Biltmore Gardens from the house.

Arriving early is the best strategy — you’ll avoid the feeling of rushing to your tour time and can enjoy the grounds before or after your house visit. We stress this, as we got delayed at dinner and on the shuttle one evening for a Christmas house tour, and missed our time and were denied entry due to Candlelight Christmas starting.

What to Expect Inside Biltmore House at Christmas During the Daytime Tour

Walking into Biltmore House at Christmas never gets old. The Banquet Hall, with its towering Fraser fir, sets the tone for the entire tour. Each room has its own theme and style, and the décor team puts an incredible amount of detail into every ornament, ribbon, and arrangement.

Favorites always include the Winter Garden, the Library, and the grand staircase wrapped with garland, and of course The Banquet Hall. Some rooms stick with traditional red-and-green themes, while others lean into rich jewel tones or unexpected color palettes. The design changes every year, and even after countless visits, we always notice something new, and it's always beautiful.

Jenn and I both agree that the library is our favorite room at Christmas.

What to Expect Inside Biltmore House at Christmas During the Daytime Tour

We visited Candlelight Christmas at Biltmore last night for the first time, and it was an experience we won’t forget anytime soon. The moment you come around the corner and see the house glowing in the darkness — the massive Christmas tree lit up on the front lawn, the luminaries lining the walkway — it quite literally feels like stepping back in time. For a moment, you can almost imagine what it must have been like on Christmas Eve in 1895, the night Biltmore first opened its doors.

Because Candlelight is so popular, there are definitely more people than you’ll see during the daytime tour. We had a pretty long line when we arrived, but it moved quickly and smoothly. Once inside, the mood shifts entirely compared to the daytime experience. The décor is almost identical, but the atmosphere is completely different. Instead of bright natural light, the entire house glows softly. Christmas trees sparkle a little brighter, ornaments catch the warm light, and the rooms feel cozier and more intimate.

During the day, the house is fairly quiet. But in the evening, you’re greeted with live musicians and choirs performing Christmas music throughout the house. Combined with the lights, the history, and the acoustics of the rooms, the whole experience comes together in a way that feels surprisingly emotional — a kind of Christmas magic that Biltmore does incredibly well. At times, we almost felt like we were guests in the Vanderbilt home, celebrating alongside George, his family, and their friends during that first holiday season.

Was it worth the money? Absolutely. It’s a special experience and one we’re really glad we did. It’s not something we would pay for every single year, but it’s definitely something everyone should see at least once. Biltmore goes above and beyond to make Candlelight Christmas feel authentic, warm, and unforgettable — and it truly was a night to remember.

Dining at Biltmore During the Holidays

Dining fills up fast during Christmas, so planning ahead is important.

For quick meals or snacks, the cafés and bakery near Biltmore House work well. Antler Hill Village also has several casual options.

For a sit-down meal:

• Stable Cafe  —  food and a casual atmosphere next to the house. Makes for a convenient stop when visiting the house.
• Cedric’s Tavern feels especially cozy during December. Often very busy and requires advanced reservations.
• The Bistro - an upscale restaurant that focuses on estate-raised and regionally sourced ingredients in a vibrant, casual setting with a European flair.
• The Dining Room at The Inn is a 4-star fine-dining choice for a more elevated holiday experience. Casual Elegant/Cocktail dress is required.

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on Candlelight evenings and during Christmas week.

Christmas at Biltmore with Kids

Biltmore at Christmas is very kid-friendly, but pacing is key based on our experience with our kids when they were younger. The house is engaging for kids thanks to the huge trees, sparkling lights, and impressive rooms, but the tour can feel long for younger visitors.

Daytime visits work best for families. After your house tour, Antler Hill Village gives kids room to explore and enjoy the lights.

Strollers are welcome, and the estate is easy to navigate with them. Elevators are available for the house tour if needed.

Accessibility & Mobility Tips

Biltmore does a good job supporting guests with mobility needs. Elevators allow access to most of the house, and wheelchairs are available in limited supply.

Accessible parking and shuttles reduce the walking distance to the house. Weekday mornings offer the easiest navigation through the rooms.

Antler Hill Village is mostly flat and easy to move through, and the gardens and Conservatory are accessible with some gentle hills.

Planning extra time at each step — parking, shuttles, and the house — makes the visit smoother and more comfortable.

Whether you’re using a phone or a camera, Christmas is one of the best times to photograph Biltmore.

Small cameras and lenses are allowed for personal use, but no flash, microphones or tripods inside the house. Please contact the Biltmore for their photography policy and commercial use.

Visitors can choose to cut their own tree or pick from a variety of pre-cut options. The owners are known for their friendly, personal touch — they’ll chat with you about the farm’s history, share tips on keeping your tree fresh, and help secure it for the ride home.

It’s a simple, no-frills experience in the best possible way — quiet, authentic, and centered on the joy of finding the perfect tree. They also serve hot chocolate and hot cider, which is wonderful on a cold day!

A true local favorite, WNC Landscaping and Christmas Trees has been helping families find their perfect holiday tree for decades. Their farms, located on Hemphill Road and Jonathan Creek Road, are surrounded by stunning mountain views that make the experience extra special.

Visitors can wander through rows of fragrant Fraser firs, ranging from small tabletop trees to towering 12-foot beauties. You can cut your own tree or choose a fresh pre-cut one — either way, the staff is always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading. Besides trees, they often have handmade wreaths, garlands, and greenery for sale.

Boyd Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 445 Boyd Farm Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: Now Open for 2025

If there is one Haywood County tree farm that truly captures the magic of Christmas in the North Carolina mountains, it is Boyd Mountain. This century-old family farm is a beloved local tradition, drawing visitors from all over the Southeast each holiday season, and for good reason.

When we visited this year (2025), they had just opened for the season, and the excitement was already in the air. The farm is beautifully decorated and offers so much more than just trees. There are numerous photo ops, plenty of fresh wreaths, stands, and Christmas decorating options, and even a food truck serving up tasty treats. We also found Santa greeting visitors and taking photos with families, which made it especially fun for the kids.

We met owner David Boyd, who welcomed us warmly and shared a little about the farm. We hopped on a wagon ride up to the top of the property, and the views were absolutely incredible. The hills are covered with rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs, and there are trees as far as you can see.

Boyd Mountain offers more than Christmas trees. It offers a full Christmas experience that brings families back year after year. Everywhere we looked, people were smiling, taking photos, and enjoying the mountain atmosphere. We had a wonderful time ourselves, and it is easy to see why this farm has become such a cherished holiday destination in Western North Carolina.

Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 280 Setzer Drive, Canton, NC

Opening: Pre-Tagging Beginning November 1. Schedule a time to pick up your tree then. They expect to sell out with pre tagging.

Tucked away in the scenic Dutch Cove community near Canton, this family-run farm has become a quiet favorite for those who love a relaxed, down-home Christmas tree experience. The drive to Dutch Cove is beautiful, winding through peaceful mountain countryside that already feels like a step back in time.

The farm specializes in premium Fraser firs grown right on-site, and you’ll find a wide range of sizes and shapes — ideal for families decorating cozy cabins or larger homes. The owners are incredibly welcoming and often take time to help visitors find exactly what they’re looking for.

Along with trees, Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm also sells handmade wreaths and garlands, making it a great one-stop shop for your holiday greenery.

Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 756 Hemphill Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: November 22, Monday – Thursday 10am-4pm and Friday – Sunday 9am-5pm

Located in the beautiful Jonathan Creek area just outside Maggie Valley, Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm offers one of the most scenic and peaceful spots in Haywood County to find your Christmas tree. The farm is surrounded by rolling hills, open meadows, and mountain views that make the experience feel straight out of a holiday postcard.

Visitors can stroll through rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs and take their time finding the right one — whether you prefer to cut your own or choose from a selection of freshly pre-cut trees. The owners are friendly and welcoming, always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading your tree for the trip home.

One of the most photographed landmarks here is their beautiful red barn painted with the classic 7-Up logo — a bright splash of color against the green trees and mountain backdrop. It’s a favorite photo spot for families, and it adds a touch of nostalgic charm to the whole experience.

Nesbitt Tree Farm

Address: 333 Sunset Ridge Road, Clyde, NC

When: Now Open for 2025

A short drive from downtown Waynesville, Nesbitt Tree Farm is another great local gem. The farm is easy to access and offers high-quality Fraser firs that are carefully trimmed and maintained.

The Nesbitt family has been growing Christmas trees for many years, and their experience shows — every tree seems perfectly shaped and fragrant. They also sell fresh wreaths and garlands, often made right there on the farm.

It’s a wonderful option if you’re looking for a less crowded, laid-back place to pick your tree while still getting that authentic mountain farm feel.

Rock Cottage Farm Christmas Trees

Address: 430 Carswell Rd, Canton, NC 28716

Located just outside Canton, Rock Cottage Farm is a wonderful family-owned and operated farm offering pre-cut Fraser firs at budget-friendly prices. While they don’t offer choose-and-cut, they make up for it with a warm, festive atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.

Visitors can pick out a beautiful, freshly cut Fraser fir and then spend some time exploring the Christmas Barn, filled with handmade gifts, ornaments, and crafts all created by the family. You can sip on hot chocolate, enjoy fresh popcorn, and even get your face painted — a big hit with kids and the young at heart.

There’s also a cozy fire to warm up by, and friendly animals around the farm to visit — including a sweet, gentle donkey who quickly became one of our favorites.

We really enjoyed our visit here and meeting the wonderful family behind Rock Cottage Farm. It’s a heartwarming reminder that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Plan Your Visit

Most Christmas tree farms near Waynesville open around Thanksgiving and stay open through mid-December. Hours and availability can vary depending on weather and demand, so it’s always a good idea to check each farm’s website or Facebook page before heading out.

Bring warm clothes, gloves, and boots — the fields can be muddy, especially after a mountain rain. Most farms cut your tree for you and will strap it to your car for you.    

Many farms also have farm stands selling wreaths, garlands, and local goods, so bring some cash just in case.

Tips for Finding, Picking, and Bringing Your Tree Home

1. Choose the right size for your space.
Before heading out, measure the height of your ceiling and remember to leave room for your tree stand and topper. Many people overestimate how tall their room is — and end up trimming several feet off once they get home!

2. Look for color and shape.
A healthy Fraser fir should have rich green needles, a pleasant scent, and a strong, even shape. Walk around your tree to check all sides — especially if it will be placed in a central spot.

3. Test for freshness.
Gently tug on a few branches or tap the tree on the ground. If only a few needles fall, it’s fresh. Fraser firs are known for holding their needles well, so this test should give you confidence in your pick.

4. Ask about shaking and baling.
Most local farms will shake loose needles out of your tree and wrap it in netting to make it easier to transport. This simple step helps keep your car and home cleaner.

5. Give it a fresh cut at home.
Once you’re home, trim about an inch off the bottom before placing your tree in water. This allows it to absorb water more easily and stay fresh longer.

6. Keep it hydrated.
Check the water level daily — trees can drink a surprising amount, especially during the first few days indoors. Never let the base dry out, or the trunk will seal and stop taking in water.

7. Enjoy the moment.
Make a day of it — bring a thermos of hot chocolate, take photos, and enjoy the mountain scenery. Picking your own Christmas tree is about the experience as much as the tree itself.

Where is Rocky Mount, Virginia?

Rocky Mount is about 25 miles south of Roanoke, just off Highway 220 in Franklin County, Virginia. The drive down is beautiful, with rolling hills and farmland stretching out in every direction.

It’s an easy day trip from Roanoke — roughly a 35-minute drive — and a great stop if you’re exploring Smith Mountain Lake or heading to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Why Visit Rocky Mount?

Rocky Mount is one of those small towns that’s full of life but still keeps its relaxed, small-town feel. You’ll find a charming downtown area filled with local shops, restaurants, and music venues, and it’s home to the Harvester Performance Center, one of the best small music venues in the region.

It’s also known as the gateway to The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, a 300-mile driving route that celebrates the rich musical traditions of Appalachia. The trail begins right here in Rocky Mount and winds through the mountains of Southwest Virginia, connecting communities where bluegrass, old-time, and gospel music have deep roots. That musical heritage is still alive in Rocky Mount today, and you can feel it in the town’s culture, creativity, and friendly spirit.

Between the music, the history, and the small-town hospitality, Rocky Mount makes for an easy and rewarding getaway in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Things to Do in Rocky Mount, Virginia

For a small town, Rocky Mount really surprised us with how much there is to see and do.

The downtown area has a nice mix of local history, small shops, and friendly people, all surrounded by beautiful countryside that’s fun to explore. We spent the day seeing what Rocky Mount offered and came away really impressed with its character and the pride locals have in their community.

Explore Downtown Rocky Mount

We started our visit downtown at the Rocky Mount, VA Visitor Center, which is the perfect first stop. The staff were friendly and full of great information about the area — from where to eat to local history and things to do.

From there, we walked around downtown, checked out the historic buildings, and stopped into a few local shops. It’s a relaxed and enjoyable place to wander, and you really get that small-town Virginia feel.

Visit the Moonshine Explosion Museum

One of the most interesting places we stopped was the Moonshine Explosion Museum, located right downtown.  This interactive museum tells the story of Franklin County’s moonshine history — from Prohibition to modern-day craft distilling.

On July 11, 1930, a man claiming to be a "salesman" pulled into the building, which at the time was a mechanic's garage. He told the staff he was having car trouble. The mechanics wanted to let the car cool down before working on it, so they went home for dinner, planning to return later. While away, the car, which was carrying a full load of illegal moonshine, caught fire and caused an explosion that damaged the building and burned through the floor.

You can see the remnants of the explosion today, which were hidden behind brick walls until recently.

You’ll also see old stills, historic photos, and even a short film that brings the “moonshine capital of the world” story to life. The film is multi-media as well, with neat lighting and sound effects, and very well done.  

The museum is fun, educational, and a great way to understand how deeply moonshining shaped this region’s culture and people.

Hike at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park

After exploring downtown, we took a short drive out to Smith Mountain Lake State Park for a relaxing hike along the lake.

We stopped by the visitor and welcome center on the way in to get some information on the best trail for views of the lake.  The staff members there were very friendly, fun and helpful.  We enjoyed meeting and talking with them.  We also toured the exhibits and store they have there as well, and met "Bubba" a largemouth bass they have in a large aquairum - He has quite the personality and loves posing for photos. 

They recommended the Turtle Island Trail, which was a fantastic suggestion. The trail goes along the lake out to Turtle Island, which offers outstanding views. The island is the perfect spot to watch a sunset and see one of the Osprey nests. We even saw a few deer during our hike.

The trail was easy and scenic, winding through the woods with several great viewpoints over the water. It’s peaceful, quiet, and the perfect way to unwind after spending time in town.

Explore The Crooked Road

Rocky Mount marks The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, a 300-mile driving route that winds through Southwest Virginia celebrating the region’s deep Appalachian music roots. The trail connects towns and communities where traditional bluegrass, gospel, and old-time mountain music have been passed down through generations — often played on front porches, in general stores, and at Friday night jam sessions.

We didn’t have time to explore the entire route, but standing at the beginning of it in Rocky Mount gave us a real sense of connection to the area’s musical heritage.

The Crooked Road leads to some incredible stops, including The Floyd Country Store (home to the famous Friday Night Jamboree), the Blue Ridge Music Center near Galax with its excellent museum and summer concerts, and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol. Even if you just travel a short stretch, it’s a scenic drive full of history, culture, and that authentic Appalachian spirit that makes this region so special.

Where to Eat?

For a small community, Rocky Mount has a surprisingly good dining scene — from casual local hangouts to one of the best speakeasies we’ve ever visited anywhere in the Blue Ridge. Here are a few of the places we visited and really enjoyed during our trip.

Anastasia’s Speakeasy

We had dinner at Anastasia’s Speakeasy, and it turned out to be one of the coolest dining experiences we’ve ever had.

When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a small, nicely decorated room with stairs going up and a large vintage candy machine sitting against the wall. It took us literally a minute to figure out that the candy machine was actually a hidden door leading into the real speakeasy — how cool is that?

Inside, the room is dark and cozy, with no windows and full of period décor that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight back into the 1920s. We started off with a round of drinks — including one of their smoked old fashioneds. 

At Anastasia’s, they actually smoke the ice, which gives the drink a deep, lingering smoky flavor that’s unlike anything we’ve tried elsewhere.

For dinner, we ordered salads and pizza, and both were excellent. The food, drinks, and service were top-notch, and the entire experience was just plain fun.

Anastasia’s quickly became one of our favorite places — and honestly, it’s the best speakeasy we’ve visited anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Be sure to pay them a visit.

Rocky Mount Burger Company

We stopped in at Rocky Mount Burger Company for lunch — a laid-back, local bar and grill that’s a popular spot with both locals and visitors. It has a casual, friendly atmosphere, so we grabbed a couple of seats at the bar.

We started off with fried pickles, then ordered burgers along with a mixed drink and a local beer. They have a very large burger selection, as you would expect.

The food was good and the service was friendly, but overall, it’s a pretty simple place — the kind of spot where you can grab a decent meal and a drink without any fuss. Nothing fancy, just good, straightforward bar food and a relaxed vibe.

Olde Towne Social House

We stopped into Olde Towne Social House during our visit, not to eat, but to make our way through to the Moonshine Explosion Museum located downstairs. Still, we couldn’t help but take a few minutes to look around — and honestly, we wished we’d had more time to stay.

Olde Towne Social House is an elegant yet comfortable wine bar that serves food like small plates, charcuterie, sandwiches, and entrees. The décor is absolutely beautiful — vintage-style furniture, cozy couches, and intimate seating areas that make it the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine or enjoy a quiet meal.

It’s the kind of place you walk into and immediately want to come back to when you have more time. Next time we’re in Rocky Mount, it’s definitely on our list for lunch or dinner.

If you decide to stay overnight in Rocky Mount, you’ll find a few great options — from historic inns to familiar hotels and cozy vacation rentals. The town is small, but its location near Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake makes it a convenient base for exploring more of Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Early Inn at the Grove
This beautiful 1850s-era Greek Revival home sits on a quiet stretch of land just outside downtown. It’s full of character, with large rooms, southern charm, and peaceful grounds shaded by huge old trees. If you’re looking for a boutique-style stay, this is the one.

Holiday Inn Express Rocky Mount
Located right off Highway 220, this is a solid, comfortable option with modern rooms and a great location close to everything in town. We often like to stay at Holiday Inn Express when we’re traveling — you know exactly what you’ll get, and it’s always clean, quiet, and convenient.

Vacation Rentals
If you prefer a more private or home-like stay, you’ll find a nice selection of vacation rentals in and around Rocky Mount, especially near Smith Mountain Lake. Cabins, cottages, and lakefront homes make for a peaceful stay surrounded by nature.

Whether you want a historic inn, a trusted hotel, or a quiet lakeside retreat, Rocky Mount has a little something for everyone.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Rocky Mount, a little preparation will help you make the most of your time here. It’s an easy town to explore, and most of what you’ll want to see is right downtown or just a short drive away. Here are a few tips based on our visit that’ll help you plan your own trip and experience some of the best the area has to offer.

• Start at the Visitor Center – It’s a great first stop. The staff are friendly and full of local knowledge about where to eat, what to see, and what events might be happening while you’re in town.
• Business Hours - Many of the restaurants and businesses don't open until 4pm - So plan around this - We spent most of the afternoon at Smith Mountain lake, so we could arrive back in town around 5pm.
• Plan at least a full day – Between exploring downtown, visiting the Moonshine Explosion Museum, hiking at Smith Mountain Lake, and grabbing a great meal, you can easily fill a day here.
• Check The Crooked Road map before your trip – Since the trail begins right in Rocky Mount, it’s worth planning a short drive along it to take in the scenery and Appalachian music heritage.  The Visitor Center has guides on the Crooked Road.
• Catch a show if you can – The Harvester Performance Center downtown often hosts big-name musicians in an intimate setting, and it’s one of the region’s best venues.
  
• Combine Rocky Mount with a visit to Roanoke or Smith Mountain Lake – Both are close by and make great additions to a Blue Ridge weekend getaway.

Where is Wilkesboro?

Wilkesboro is located in northwestern North Carolina along US-421, about 30 minutes south of Boone and just over an hour northwest of Winston-Salem. The Yadkin River separates Wilkesboro from its sister city, North Wilkesboro, and together they make up what locals call “The Wilkesboros.”

Things to Do

Most of the best things to do in Wilkesboro are centered right around downtown. The area is walkable, welcoming, and full of character, with restored historic buildings, local shops, and plenty of spots to relax and explore.

During our visit, we toured the Wilkes Heritage Museum and the Historic Wilkes County Jail, both offering a fascinating look at the town’s past and the people who helped shape it. The museum complex alone is worth the stop — it’s packed with local history, exhibits, and even a few surprises.

Downtown Wilkesboro is also home to a growing collection of boutiques, antique stores, and galleries. We enjoyed visiting several different shops with clothing, home decor, gifts, and of course, southern charm. You’ll also find a few great antique stores and locally owned shops scattered around Main Street that are perfect for browsing.

Throughout the year, downtown comes alive with events, festivals, and live music.

Our Pick

During our visit, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Wilkesboro, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The rooms were clean, quiet, and comfortable; the staff was friendly; and the location made it easy to get around town.

They have an outdoor pool, full exercise room, and complimentary breakfast. We’d definitely stay here again on a future visit.

Other Options

Wilkesboro also has a few other solid hotel options, including the Hampton Inn Wilkesboro and Quality Inn & Suites, both close to dining and shopping along US-421.

If you prefer more space or a home-like stay, there are also vacation rentals available in and around Wilkesboro and nearby North Wilkesboro. These range from small in-town apartments to cozy countryside cabins just a few minutes from downtown.

Spring brings wildflowers and comfortable temps for hiking and biking. Summer is prime for the lake and river. Fall delivers orchard season and color in the nearby mountains, with easy day trips up to the Boone area. Winter is quieter and a good time for budget travelers.

A weekend covers downtown, the museum/jail, a lake day, and a couple of meals out. Add a third night if you want more trail or outdoor time.

Getting around

Parking in Wilkesboro is easy and free throughout downtown. Most of what you’ll want to see is close together, so you can park once and explore on foot. The streets are walkable, and it’s a pleasant area to spend a few hours visiting shops, restaurants, and historic sites. If you’re venturing beyond downtown or visiting both Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro, everything is only a short drive apart.

Grab Coffee at Talia Espresso

Our first stop when we arrived in North Wilkesboro was at Talia Espresso in downtown, and it was a great way to kick off our visit. The cafe has a warm, welcoming vibe, with plenty of tables and comfy places to relax, enjoy some coffee and food, or get some work done. We really liked that they have both indoor and outdoor seating as well.

We ordered some coffees (a honey, lavender latte and a salted caramel pumpkin spice latte), and some food as well, since it was lunch time. Sitting with our coffee, we noticed a steady stream of locals stopping in, chatting with the staff, and catching up with friends. It’s clear that Talia’s is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a community hub.

It set the tone for the rest of our trip — a relaxed, small-town charm paired with genuinely good food and drink. If you’re spending time in downtown Wilkesboro, Talia Espresso is a must-stop for your morning caffeine fix.

Roaring River Vineyards and Restaurant

One of the most memorable stops during our visit to Wilkes County was Roaring River Vineyards. Located along the river, this vineyard is as much about the setting and experience as it is about the wine — and we loved every part of it.

We started with lunch at the restaurant, and it was fantastic. The highlight was a massive charcuterie board, loaded with meats, cheeses, fruits, and accompaniments that paired beautifully with their wines. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. We highly recommend grabbing a table outside if the weather is nice — there’s nothing quite like enjoying good food and wine while listening to the river rushing by just a few feet away.

During our visit, we had the chance to meet Tom Silvey, the owner, who shared the story of how Roaring River Vineyards came to be. His vision was to create a unique vineyard and winery right on the river, a place where people could relax, celebrate, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Tom graciously showed us around the property, including their rental homes, multi-purpose space for weddings and events, and even their campground. We also toured the vineyards themselves, which added an extra layer of appreciation when sipping their wines.

Roaring River Vineyards is located in Traphill, about 25 minutes from Wilkesboro. The winery and restaurant are generally open Thursday through Sunday, but hours can vary seasonally, so it’s best to check their website before visiting. Reservations are recommended for the restaurant, especially if you want outdoor seating by the river.

The Lost Wombat

We stopped at The Lost Wombat during the our food tour and were immediately drawn in by its fun Aussie vibe and creative menu. We tried their Aussie Burger — a true Australian classic “with the lot.” It came piled high with a 7oz rissole patty, cheese, fried egg, bacon, pineapple ring, tomato, lettuce, fried onion, pickled beet slices, and BBQ sauce, all served with crispy fries. It was every bit as good as it sounds.

To go with it, we had a refreshing Moonshine Lemonade, which paired perfectly with the meal. While there, we met the owner — who also owns the Liberty Theater — and he told us all about the food and their signature Kangaroo Burger (yes, made with real kangaroo meat). You can tell he takes a lot of pride in what they’re doing here.

The Lost Wombat has something for everyone — great food and drinks, a family-friendly “yard” next door, and an adults-only tavern upstairs. 

Cinder Bistro

As part of the Blue Ridge Food Tour, we stopped into Cinder Bistro and were treated to an incredible sample of their barbecue — pulled smoked chicken, pulled pork, and brisket — along with some perfectly seasoned collard greens. Every bite was melt-in-your-mouth good. We’ve had a lot of BBQ during our travels, and Cinder Bistro easily ranks in our top favorites.

They also served us a fresh blackberry dessert created by the chef that looked as good as it tasted — the perfect sweet finish to the meal. To go with everything, we sampled a flight of local beers, which paired perfectly with the smoky flavors.

We had a chance to meet the owners, who were as warm and welcoming as the food was delicious. Their passion for great food and excellent customer service really shows in every detail.

Cagney’s Kitchen of Wilkesboro

We started one morning with breakfast at Cagney’s Kitchen, a popular local favorite known for its hearty Southern comfort food. Jenn went healthy with eggs, turkey bacon, and fresh fruit, while I went all in with corned beef hash and eggs, biscuits and gravy, and crispy hashbrowns — all washed down with plenty of hot coffee.

The food was really good, the portions generous, and our server was super friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is casual, family-friendly, and comfortable — the kind of place where you can relax and enjoy a good meal without any fuss.

We’d definitely eat at Cagney’s again next time we’re in town.

6th and Main

We visited 6th and Main as part of the food tour we did and immediately understood why it’s considered the nicest restaurant in town. While we wouldn’t call it “fine dining,” it definitely has a more upscale feel, with a cozy, inviting atmosphere and a full bar.

During our visit, we sat in the bar area and enjoyed a sample of their spicy pecan-encrusted chicken served with mashed potatoes, along with a glass of both red and white wine. The chicken was fantastic — tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked.

We had planned to come back for a full meal the next night, but the restaurant was closed for the weekend. It’s definitely on our short list for our next trip to Wilkesboro, and exactly the kind of restaurant we love — comfortable, welcoming, and a touch upscale.

Glenn’s

We stopped in at Glenn’s restaurant for breakfast, a longtime local spot near the Tyson processing plant that’s been serving Wilkes County for decades. Glenn’s is known as a gathering place for locals — the kind of restaurant where everyone seems to know each other, and the coffee never stops pouring.

The menu features classic country-style comfort food, with simple and familiar dishes like biscuits and gravy, eggs, and sausage.

It wasn’t quite our favorite meal of the trip, but we can appreciate its history, down-home charm, and the loyal crowd of regulars who clearly love starting their day here.

Moravian Falls Grill

We stopped at Moravian Falls Grill for lunch on our way back from visiting Perry Lowe Orchards. I ordered the chicken quesadilla special with fries, while Jenn went for the popcorn chicken and fries.

In addition to their regular menu, they offer daily specials like beef tips with gravy and a variety of Southern sides — fried potatoes and onions, green beans, pinto beans, and more. They even had peach cobbler for dessert.

The restaurant is small and cozy, with a focus on simple Southern comfort food. It’s clearly a local favorite and a convenient spot to grab a hearty meal when visiting Moravian Falls or the orchard nearby. The food was good, the service friendly, and it definitely has that home-cooked, small-town feel.

Dom Bakeries

Dom Bakeries was our first stop on the Blue Ridge Food Tours, and it was a great way to kick things off. We sampled their cheese pizza and an apple cider donut — both simple but delicious. The pizza had that classic New York–style flavor, and the donut was soft, sweet, and full of fall flavor.

The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is very casual — the kind of place you can pop into for a quick bite, a coffee, or a treat to go. It’s a solid local spot for anyone craving something fresh and homemade in Wilkesboro.

Amalfi’s Italian Restaurant

We had dinner at Amalfi’s one evening and found the place packed with customers — always a good sign. We started with glasses of wine and an order of cheese sticks before moving on to our entrees. I had the Salmon Mediterraneo, and Jenn went with the Chicken Parmesan. Both dishes were delicious, generously portioned, and full of flavor.

Our server was friendly and attentive, and we even had a nice chat with the owner during our meal. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly, and the value is hard to beat — the portions are huge for the price. We were too full for dessert, but it’s definitely on our list for next time.

Step Back in Time at the Wilkes Heritage Museum

One of the highlights of our visit was touring the Wilkes Heritage Museum in downtown Wilkesboro. 

We had the pleasure of meeting George Childers, the Board Chairman, who guided us through the museum. George’s passion for local history was contagious — he not only walked us through the various rooms and exhibits, but also shared fascinating stories about the people, places, and events that helped shape Wilkes County.

After exploring the main museum, George walked us over to two historic buildings on the property: the Old Wilkes County Jail and the Robert Cleveland House, which dates back to the 1770s. Walking through those spaces gave us a real sense of what life was like in Wilkesboro centuries ago.

The museum is full of treasures, but a few exhibits really stood out to us:

• The Old Jail – This former county jail is still intact, complete with its original cells and the living quarters for the jailers. Walking through, we could almost imagine what it must have been like for inmates housed there years ago.
• The NASCAR Section – Wilkes County has deep racing roots, and this exhibit highlights legendary driver Junior Johnson. Seeing his story displayed was both inspiring and a reminder of how much this area has contributed to stock car racing.
• Medical and Dental Room – Filled with vintage equipment, this exhibit gave us a glimpse into what healthcare looked like decades ago. Some of the tools looked more intimidating than helpful!
• Classroom Schoolhouse – Stepping into this recreated one-room schoolhouse felt like stepping back in time. With old desks, chalkboards, and books, it gave us a real sense of how children in Wilkes County learned generations ago.
• Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame – We also loved exploring this section, which honors the musicians and traditions that shaped the sound of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From bluegrass pioneers to gospel legends, it’s a moving tribute to the region’s musical roots.

The Wilkes Heritage Museum is located at 100 East Main Street in Wilkesboro. Parking is available nearby in downtown Wilkesboro.

Indulge at Suck It Up Milkshakes

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you can’t miss Suck It Up Milkshakes in downtown North Wilkesboro. This spot takes milkshakes to a whole new level — ours came loaded with whipped cream, sprinkles, cotton candy, and over the top toppings that turn your shake into an edible work of art.

We tried two of their creations: the Blondie, a strawberry shake topped with an ice cream cone, strawberry wafer cookies, and strawberry drizzle; and the Butterlicious, a decadent mix of cookie butter, Biscoff cookies, and caramel drizzle, all topped with a snickerdoodle cookie. Both were just as fun as they were delicious — rich, creamy, and so over the top that we couldn’t stop smiling as we tried to figure out how to even start eating them.

The shop itself is in an old gas station, and outdoor picnic tables are available for seating. Beyond milkshakes, they also serve boba tea, ice cream nachos, cookies, and more — but let’s be honest, it’s those wild shakes that steal the show.

If you’re downtown and craving something sweet, Suck It Up Milkshakes is an absolute must. Just make sure to bring your appetite (and grab lots of napkins).

Taste and Explore with Blue Ridge Food Tours

One of the absolute highlights of our time in Wilkesboro was going on a Wilkesboro food tour with Blue Ridge Food Tours, led by our wonderful guide, Mya. The tour was the perfect mix of food, history, and local flavor.

As we walked through town, Mya shared stories about Wilkesboro, the surrounding mountains, and the South — everything from quirky bits of history to fascinating details about the food we were sampling. It felt like we were experiencing the town in a way we never could have on our own.

And the food? Incredible. Each stop offered something unique:

• Dom Bakeries – We kicked things off with fresh-baked treats, including pizza and apple donuts.
• Tripp’s Mercantile – Their Limoncello Cake from Amalfi's was light, sweet, and unforgettable. We also enjoyed shopping and exploring the store while there as well.
• 6th and Main – A local favorite, offering delicious bites in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We sampled their spicy pecan glazed chicken, with mashed potatoes and a glass of wine.
• Key City Antiques – Not only did we browse vintage treasures, but we also tried old-fashioned sodas that took us straight back in time.
• Cinder Bistro – Hands down, some of the best BBQ and beer we’ve ever had. We enjoyed their pulled chicken, pulled pork, and brisket along with some smoked collards and a flight of local craft beers. 
• C’est La Vin – A stop for wine lovers, where we enjoyed a charcuterie board and wine tasting that felt both refined and relaxed.
• The Lost Wombat – Our final stop, where we indulged in a hearty Aussie Burger and a moonshine lemonade. To top it off, the owner gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the historic movie theater next door (see below), where we even got to see pieces of the original film reel from Star Wars: A New Hope.

From start to finish, the food tour gave us a real taste of Wilkesboro — both literally and figuratively. We really enjoyed the balance of trying amazing food, walking through the charming downtown, and learning more about the area’s history and culture.

Tours usually run about 3 hours, include multiple stops, and are best booked in advance online. Tour cost is $65 per person, and you can upgrade to alcoholic beverages for an additional $14. You can check their schedule and reserve tickets directly through their website.

Sip and Savor at Merle’s Craft Cocktails

After a day of exploring, we made our way to Merle’s Craft Cocktails in downtown Wilkesboro, and it quickly became one of our favorite stops. The last time we had cocktails to this level, were during a visit to San Diego. The atmosphere here is local, relaxed and stylish. A perfect spot for unwinding with friends or starting a night out.

We sampled a few different drinks, but the standout for us was the Smoked Old Fashioned. Merle’s offers a couple of variations on the classic Old Fashioned, but the smoked version was hands-down our favorite — smooth, bold, and beautifully balanced with just the right amount of smokiness. Watching it prepared and then enjoying that first sip was an experience!

What made Merle’s even more memorable was the people. We chatted with the owner LB, who was not only incredibly friendly but also passionate about her craft. Every cocktail on the menu is made with thought, care, and an aim to give guests something truly special.  

Merle’s is clearly a local favorite, with plenty of regulars mixing in alongside visitors. It’s the perfect spot to sip on some fantastic cocktails, socialize, and soak in the Wilkesboro vibe.

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy high-quality drinks and good conversation, Merle’s should be at the top of your list. We'll definitely be back.

Pick-Your-Own Fun at Perry Lowe Orchards

No trip to Wilkes County in late summer or fall would be complete without a stop at Perry Lowe Orchards. This family-run orchard has been welcoming visitors for more than 6 generations, and it shows in the warm, welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere.

We hopped on one of the tractor rides that take you up into the orchards and spent time picking a variety of apples right from the trees. The scenery from the fields was beautiful — rolling hills, crisp air, and the satisfying crunch of apples fresh off the branch.

The fields are well labeled, and there are even apple washing stations so you can taste your apples and decide which ones you want to bring home. We've been a number of North Carolina apple orchards, and this was our first time seeing this feature, and we loved it.

Back at the farm stand, we sampled some of their delicious offerings: fresh-pressed cider, cider apples, and even icy cold apple slushies (which were a big hit on a warm afternoon). There was also merchandise, and other food items available as well.

This orchard is also very family-friendly, with activities that go far beyond apple picking. Kids (and adults too!) can enjoy the Super Mega Slide — Larry tried it and can confirm it’s just as fun as it looks. 

The slide is big with a number of different lanes. You grab a tube on the way up, and the staff at the top will lubricate the bottom, and help you slide down.  

There is also a giant jump pad, tractor-themed playground, and a bee train ride. For something extra unique, there’s even an apple cannon, where you can shoot apples at fun targets.

Perry Lowe Orchards is located just outside Wilkesboro and is open seasonally, from late summer through the fall. Hours vary depending on the harvest and activities, so it’s best to check their website before your visit. Admission is free; you simply pay for the apples and any extra activities you choose. Tractor rides and kids’ attractions may have a small additional fee.

Explore Downtown Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro

One of our favorite parts of the trip was simply spending time in downtown Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro.

Wilkesboro is kind of unique in that there are two towns literally right next to each other and separated by the Yadkin River. While the two towns are separate, they are treated as one. Wilkesboro was first, and North Wilkesboro came later when the railroad came through. Both have downtown areas to explore, with North Wilkesboro having the largest downtown area.

We did spend time in both and enjoyed them both. In this section, we'll feature our visit to downtown North Wilkesboro, as that is where many of the shops are located.

The historic main street of North Wilkesboro is lined with a mix of shops, cafes, and local businesses, all set against a backdrop of beautifully restored buildings that give the area so much character.

We strolled through town, popping into boutiques, antique stores, and specialty shops. A few of our favorite stops include:

• Key City Antiques - This large shop has antiques, collectibles, furniture, local items, and more. It's a treasure trove of vintage finds.
• Carolina Treasures on Main - a large antique shop full of unique gifts and antiques.
• Fruit of the Vine Boutique - A beautiful mix of fashion, art, and faith. The shop offers a thoughtfully curated selection of fine fashion, artwork, and handcrafted pieces from Christian artists and makers — all centered around their inspiring theme, “The Art of Living Well.”
• Wilkes County Hardware - A historic old-school hardware store that offers repair and assembly services, and essential home items. This store is fun to browse. Be sure to check out the operating historic elevator!
• Ivy Ridge Traditions - a boutique full of stylish clothing, home décor, and gifts that perfectly blend Southern charm with modern style. We picked up a few items to bring home with us!

Another must-see downtown is the historic Liberty Theater, which still stands as a reminder of Wilkesboro’s long-running love for film and entertainment. Even just admiring the marquee and building from the outside gave us a sense of nostalgia and history.  

Downtown also has some wonderful spots to pause and relax, whether that’s sipping coffee at Talia Espresso, grabbing a bite to eat, or just sitting outside and people-watching in the heart of town. We noticed how the area is continuing to grow, with new businesses opening alongside longtime favorites, giving it a lively but still small-town feel.

If you’re visiting Wilkesboro, make sure to allow time just to explore both downtown areas — it’s the best way to soak in the local charm and discover hidden gems.

Hike at Stone Mountain State Park

About 30 minutes from Wilkesboro, Stone Mountain State Park offers some of the most stunning outdoor scenery in the region. The park is named after its massive granite dome — a 600-foot rock face that towers above the surrounding forest — and it’s every bit as impressive in person as it sounds.

During our visit, we hiked the Stone Mountain Loop Trail, a 4.5-mile loop that takes you across the top of Stone Mountain and then down and around its base. The trail is a workout in spots, but absolutely worth it. As we made our way up, the views just kept getting better — sweeping panoramas of the Blue Ridge foothills and the dramatic granite dome stretching out before us.

On the back half of the trail, we followed paths through shaded forest and alongside streams and waterfalls. The sound of rushing water and the cool mist from the falls were a refreshing break after the climb. By the time we finished, we felt like we’d gotten the perfect mix of mountain views, forest trails, and peaceful water features all in one hike.

Stone Mountain State Park is about 30 minutes from Wilkesboro and offers more than 18 miles of hiking trails. The Stone Mountain Loop Trail is moderate to strenuous in difficulty, so be sure to bring plenty of water, good shoes, and allow at least 3–4 hours to complete it.

The park also features camping, trout fishing, climbing, and picnic areas, making it a great spot for a half-day or full-day trip. There’s no entrance fee, but parking areas can fill up on weekends, so plan to arrive early if you’re visiting during peak season.
