Highway 64 Scenic Drive - Walkthrough

Hwy 64, The NC Waterfall Byway begins at the intersection of North Carolina 215 (part of the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway) and Highway 64, just outside of Rosman, NC. The drive along Highway 64 provides scenic views, waterfalls, and visits to some popular and unique small towns in Western NC. Be sure to take your time, and enjoy all the wonderful things this drive offers.

The views along this scenic byway are fantastic during the Fall Color season.

Here's the full walkthrough of the Waterfall Byway Scenic Drive along North Carolina's famous Highway 64:

Rosman NC - Official Starting point

You drive along Highway 64 NC begins in the small mountain town of Rosman NC, where you'll pick up Highway 64 and head west.  You'll soon cross the famous French Broad River that goes through Asheville NC and Biltmore Estate.

We begin this drive in Brevard NC, but the official beginning isn't until Rosman NC.  Brevard is just an easier starting point for us from Waynesville NC and for those starting from Asheville NC.

Toxaway Falls and Lake Toxaway

After about Go 7 miles, you'll cross the Toxaway River and the first waterfall, Toxaway Falls.  The 150' tall Toxaway Falls will be on your left under the bridge, and Lake Toxaway on your right.  

For a better view of Toxaway Falls, there are pull overs on the right side of the road heading west on hwy 64.  You can park here, and carefully cross the road to see the falls.  The view is Gorges State Park, home to many other waterfalls including Rainbow and Turtleback Falls.

Gorges State Park and Whitewater Falls NC

Three miles past Toxaway Falls is the small resort town of Sapphire NC.  For a fun side excursion, head south on Highway 281 to Gorges State Park where you can hike to Rainbow and Turtleback Falls.  Drive a little further down Highway 281 for Whitewater Falls, the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi.

Cashiers NC

Cashiers, NC is about 10 miles west of Toxaway Falls on Highway 64 West.  Cashiers is a great small mountain town to stop, take a break, and explore..  Pronounced "Cashers" by locals, Cashiers is one of the oldest resort towns in Western North Carolina.

Highlands NC

From Cashiers, continue West along Highway 64 for 12 very curvy miles to Highlands, NC. Highlands is the highest incorporated community on the East Coast, at 4,118 feet in elevation. Highlands is a neat town, plan to spend some time here shopping and looking around.

Lake Sequoyah and Sequoyah Falls

Continue West on Highway 64, and cross Lake Sequoyah on the outskirts of Highlands and see Sequoyah Falls, the waterfall caused by the Dam. If you are travelling east into Highlands on 64, you'll see a gravel parking area on your right just before the dam and falls. You can park here to view the falls.

There is a small scramble trail down to the bottom as well. Just be careful, as there is another waterfall below this one, and a slip could send you down over it!

While it doesn't sound like much, it's a really pretty waterfall, even if it's not natural.

Bridal Veil Falls Highlands NC

Continue on Highway 64 West for two more miles to the popular Bridal Veil Falls, a 120 foot tall and roadside waterfall. Pull over, and walk under the falls for a refreshing natural shower.  

In the past you could drive under this waterfall, but it is now closed to cars and motorcycles because of storm damage.

Dry Falls

A little further down, you'll pass by Dry Falls, one of the most popular and beautiful waterfalls in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Dry Falls has ample parking, bathrooms, and a handicap friendly upper viewing platform.  

Be aware that you have to pay to park at Dry Falls now. The fee is $3.00/vehicle.

If you walk down to Dry Falls along the short paved trail, you can walk behind the waterfall. Dry Falls is named for the ability to walk behind it and remain dry ... well, mostly.

Bust Your Butt Falls (Quarry Falls)

Bust Your Butt Falls, formally known as Quarry Falls, is a waterfall and a very popular swimming hole on the Cullasaja River near Highlands, North Carolina. You'll reach Bust Your Butt Falls about 6.5 miles after leaving Highlands NC and heading west on Highway 64.

The falls are a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing, and cliff jumping. There are several pull-offs along the highway where you can park and access the falls. 

Cullasaja Gorge and Callasaja Falls

Continue West on Highway 64. Six miles past Dry Falls, you'll enter Cullasaja Gorge. The road here will narrow significantly, and cling to steep cliffs that form the gorge. This portion of the road is an "adventurous" mountain drive.

Four miles from Dry Falls is Cullasaja Falls, which is viewable from the narrow parking area. The waterfall drops 310 feet into the gorge. While viewing the falls, watch for Falcons that inhabit this area.

Gneiss NC

The community of Gneiss is 2 miles past Cullasaja Falls. Gneiss is known for the treaty council held here between Sir Alexander Cuming and the Cherokee Indians in 1730.

Franklin NC

Asheville NC Travel GuideMany visitors end their drive on the Hwy 64 Scenic Byway in the town of Franklin, NC, because of the number of options available here to loop back to their starting point. But you can continue down Highway 64 to Murphy, NC.

Franklin NC is a charming town in the southwestern part of the state. Franklin offers visitors a mix of natural beauty, small-town charm, and a rich cultural heritage. There are lots of restaurant options, shopping, and outdoor activities.  The Franklin Gem and Mineral Museum is a must-visit for those interested in geology and gemology.

Franklin to Cartoogechaye Township

Take U.S. 64 West/U.S. 23/441 South for 7.5 miles to Cartoogechaye, then another 4 miles to Winding Stair Gap, one of the earliest western passages along the famous Appalachian Trail.

Hayesville NC

The next 10 miles will take you along the ridgelines of the Chunky Gal Mountains. There are many scenic views and overlooks here.

Four miles east of Hayesville, you'll pass Lake Chatuge, and TDA lake, that is now part of the Hiawassee River. Hayesville contains Fort Hembree, a gathering place for Cherokee Indians, before they were forced to leave for Oklahoma along the "Trail of Tears".

Murphy NC

Murphy, North Carolina, is a picturesque town nestled in the western part of the state. Murphy has a wonderful downtown to explore, and was the southern terminus for the Murphy Branch of the Southern Railroad that begins in Asheville, NC.  

Murphy offers residents and visitors a blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and a welcoming community. For those seeking entertainment and excitement, Murphy is home to Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino. The casino offers a variety of gaming options, live entertainment, and dining experiences.

Waterfalls near Murphy NC include: Leatherwood Falls, Hemlock Falls, Shoal Creek Falls and Bald River Falls.

Tips for traveling the Highway 64 Waterfall Byway Scenic Drive

Driving the Highway 64 Waterfall Byway Scenic Drive can be a very memorable experience, showcasing the beauty of North Carolina's waterfalls and landscapes. The byway is really a great scenic drive, and one of our favorites that we have done many times. 

While on our adventures, we've picked up a few tips that will help your drive be more enjoyable for you:

1. Allow Ample Time - The scenic drive offers many opportunities for sightseeing and exploring. Plan for extra time to fully enjoy each waterfall, take photos, explore the small towns and all they offer, and immerse yourself in the beautiful scenery and surrounding mountains.
2. Plan Your Route - Before setting off, familiarize yourself with the route and identify the waterfalls you would like to visit. Make a list of the waterfalls and towns you don't want to miss and plan accordingly.
3. Drive Safely - The scenic drive includes winding roads and varying terrains. Observe posted speed limits, and drive cautiously, especially around curves and steep sections. Highway 64 has many of these.  Be mindful of other vehicles, pedestrians, and wildlife along the route.
4. Bring a Map or GPS - While cell phone reception may be limited in some areas, it is recommended to have a physical map or a GPS device as a backup. This will help you navigate the route and ensure you don't miss any turnoffs or attractions.  Our experience is that cell service is pretty good, but you just never know in the mountains.
5. Pack Essentials - Bring essentials such as water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes. Some waterfalls may require short hikes, so be prepared with appropriate footwear, attire and extra water.
6. Respect Nature and Follow Rules - When visiting waterfalls, be respectful of the environment and follow any posted rules or regulations. Stay on designated paths, avoid littering, and leave no trace behind.
7. Capture Memories - The waterfalls along the scenic drive provide excellent photo opportunities. Bring your camera or smartphone to capture the beauty of the cascades and surrounding landscapes. Remember to use caution when taking photos near waterfalls and cliffs.

1 - Newfound Gap Road (Highway 441) - Between Cherokee and Gatlinburg

Newfound Gap Road is by far the most popular and best smoky mountain scenic drive in the park.  The road is is full of various overlooks and pull-offs to enjoy.

Newfound Gap Road is the primary way the majority of the visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park see the park.   

The highpoint on the drive is Newfound Gap, where 441 crosses over the ridge line of the Smokies at 5,046 feet.  The road also contains access to many hiking trails, and is the road where you will find both of the main visitor centers: The Oconaluftee Visitor Center and Sugarlands Visitor Center.  

You can begin this best smoky mountain scenic drive in either Gatlinburg TN and drive to Cherokee, or begin in Cherokee and drive to Gatlinburg.   This is a very popular Gatlinburg scenic drive for visitors to eastern TN.

Be sure to stop along the way at the many attractions and pull-offs to get the full experience.

2 - Clingmans Dome Road

This seven mile smoky mountain scenic drive, which begins near Newfound Gap takes you out to Clingmans Dome, one of the most famous and the tallest peaks in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The views along the road and at the parking lot are breathtaking.    

We've travelled this road often, and it's a great location to see Black Bears, both along the road and on the trail up to Clingmans Dome.  

Once you reach the parking area, you can enjoy the views from there, which are breathtaking, or hike up to the top, and enjoy the 360 degree views from the observation tower.  The hike up is short, but very steep.

This best smoky mountain scenic drive begins just across from the Newfound Gap area, and ends at the parking area for Clingmans Dome.  

3 - Roaring Fork Nature Trail

If you want to drive on one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the world and one of the most scenic drives gatlinburg has to offer, then this 6-mile paved loop road is for you.  You feel as if have almost gone back in time, as you drive down this scenic drive just outside of Gatlinburg TN.

Highlights along the drive include gorgeous forest scenery, wildlife (including Black Bear), streams, creeks and small waterfalls.   The drive also contains a number of historic structures as well.  Roaring Fork Motor Trail is also the trailhead for Rainbow Falls Trail, one of the most popular hiking trails in the park.

4 - Cades Cove Loop Road

Another VERY popular drive is the 11 mile loop takes you through the most popular area of the park, Cades Cove.  

While driving the loop, you'll see gorgeous scenery, historic structures, and lots of wildlife.  This road will take you back in time, and allow you to experience what life in the rural Blue Ridge Mountains was like before the park was created, and before the area became a popular tourist attraction.    

The Cades Cove loop is always busy, and is the most popular smoky mountains drive.  So bring your patience, but it's worth it for the beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife.

The loop road is also the access point for the popular hiking trail to Abrams Falls.

5 - Rich Mountain Road

Rich Mountain Road begins in Cades Cove, an is a 7-mile one way drive along a twisting gravel road and ends up in Townsend TN.   

The road travels through quiet forest, and offers scenic views, wildlife viewing and photography opportunity, and a great way to escape the traffic of Cades Cove.

The road is a primitive back country road, and while graveled, it can get a bit rough in spots.  The road is also seasonal, and open from April through mid-November. Buses, RVs, or vans longer than 25-feet along with vehicles towing trailers are prohibited on Rich Mountain Road by the National Park Service.

6 - Cove Creek Road and Cataloochee Valley Road

If you're looking for a little adventure, head down Cove Creek Road into Cataloochee Valley.  This 11 mile long gravel road, twists and winds its way through the mountains to Cataloochee Valley.  We consider this a personal favorite as one of our best smoky mountain scenic drives.

The road is very narrow, often high up, and very few guard rails.   But don't let that deter you, because the destination is worth it.   Just go slow and take your time.  

Can you imagine that this road was once on the main highways to Tennessee from North Carolina?  Along the way you'll see plenty of beautiful scenery, and most likely see some wildlife, including Elk.

7 - Little River Road

This 22 mile long road winds its way through the park, between Gatlinburg, TN and Townsend, TN.   The road is the primary access point for Cades Cove, Elkmont, Greenbrier School, and Tremont.

Little River Road is also the location of the sinks, a popular swimming area, and historic railroad location.   The scenery along the drive is simply beautiful, and there are a number of pull-offs where you can explore a little, admire the scenery, or get closer to the river.  This is a very popular scenic drive, and one of the best in the smokies, due to be creekside.

8 - Upper Tremont Road

If you're looking to get away from the busy roads and crowds, often found in the more popular sections of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Upper Tremont Road might be just what you're looking for as far as smoky mountain drives go.

This 8 mile roundtrip drive (it dead-ends after 4 miles) is beautiful all times of the year, but especially during the Fall.

The road also features a number of scenic pull-overs with trailheads that lead down to the river, and to several waterfalls as well.

From Pigeon Forge, take the Parkway out to South Wears Valley Road toward the National Park. After making a right turn towards Cades Cove, drive a few hundred yards and take a left at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont.

To reach Upper Tremont Road, head towards Cades Cove, and the Townsend Wye.  The turn for Tremont is  The turn immediately after the Townsend Wye on the road as it begins to ascend into Cades Cove.

9 - Mount Sterling Road from Big Creek to Cataloochee Valley NC

Mount Sterling Road, also called Cataloochee Turnpike, from Big Creek To Cataloocheee Valley is a beautiful drive, full of dense woods, creekside views, wildlife, and waterfalls.    

This 20 mile drive will take you down a gravel road from the entrance to the Big Creek area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, into Cataloochee Valley.  Along the way, you'll encounter some historic homes, cemeteries, hiking trails, and bridges that cross creeks.  

It's far less travelled than many of the smoky mountain drives, and you'll meet very few people as you travel down Mount Sterling road.

The road is a really nice smoky mountain and remote back county mountain drive.   Due to frequent rough road conditions, while doable in a normal car, we do recommend an off road vehicle with ground clearance.

10 - Heintooga Round Bottom Road

Heintooga Round Bottom Road is located at the very end of Balsam Mountain Road off the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Maggie Valley NC.  This 14 mile, gravel, and one-way back mountain road, will take you from the Blue Ridge Parkway, down to Cherokee.

The road is heavily wooded, and provides a beautiful back country mountain drive, that is very remote.  Along the way, you'll get scenic views, tons of wildflowers, access to hiking trailheads, creeks, small waterfalls, and bridges.  If you're lucky, you might even see Elk or Bear on your journey.

The road can be a bit rough in spots, and while an off-road vehicle isn't required, we do recommend one just for the ground clearance.

11 - The Road To Nowhere - Bryson City NC

The Road To Nowhere, is exactly that, a Road to ... well, nowhere.   The road is also known as Lakeshore Drive, and begins just outside of Bryson City, and winds itself through the surrounding mountains of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The road is close to and above Lake Fontana, and some of the pull-outs offer incredible views fo the lake.  

This is a gorgeous drive any time of the year, but especially during the Fall, when colors are peaking.  

At the end of the road, is a parking area, where you can walk through the tunnel and come out at the end of the road.  Be sure to bring a flashlight, as the tunnel will be a bit dark.  There are also a few trailheads here for those wanting to do longer hikes, including the long Lakeshore Trail, which goes around Lake Fontana.

12 - Blue Ridge Parkway

While not officially part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway is accessible just down from the Oconaluftee Visitor's Center.  

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic roads in the world and definitely one of the best scenic drives in the smokies.  The Parkway goes for 469 miles from Cherokee to to the Virginia Blue Ridge where it connects up with Virginia's Skyline Drive.

We love driving in the Smoky Mountains, and have driven all of these drives many times on our adventures out and about.  During those adventures over the years, we've picked up a few tips to make your best Smoky Mountain scenic drives more enjoyable and safe:

1. Plan ahead - Research the different scenic drives available in the Smoky Mountains and choose the ones that align with your preferences and interests. Take into account the distance, time, and difficulty level of each drive to ensure it suits your schedule and abilities.

Accessing Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway

The byway begins north of Robertstown, GA at the intersection of GA-75 and GA-75 Alternate, near Helen GA.

Go north from Helen, Georgia on highway 17-75 approximately 2 and a half miles and make a left onto alternate highway 17 may also be marked GA 356.  You made the correct turn if cross the bridge over the Chattahoochee River. A short drive thru the foothills of White County will bring you to GA 348, a forestry sign reading Russell-Brasstown Scenic By-Way will tell you to take a right turn onto GA 348.

Chattahoochee National Forest

As you begin your drive on GA 348, you not only enter Chattahoochee National Forest, but you also begin your ascent into the highest elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia.  Many call this the "rooftop of the North Georgia Mountains.

Dukes Creek Falls and Trailhead

On your left, not far up GA 348 is the trailhead and parking area for Dukes Creek Falls.  The parking area provides a beautiful view of the Georgia lowlands, and Yonah Mountain.

If you take the path along the side of the parking area you’ll arrive at an observation deck for Dukes Creek Falls. If you continue on the trail, past the observation deck, the trail will take you down below the falls for a closer view.  Just be aware that the climb back up is strenuous!

Raven Cliffs Falls Trail

Continuing on GA 348, you'll continue your beautiful ascent up into the mountains, and arrive soon at the road and parking area for Raven Cliffs Falls Trail.  Turn left onto the road to reach the parking area.  This is a very popular trail, that will take you down to Raven Cliffs Falls along the Dodd's Creek.  The trail is a 4.9 mile roundtrip hike, and moderate in difficulty.

This trail is one of the most beautiful in all of North Georgia.    The hike follows a beautiful, rushing trout stream in a shady, moss-filled forest, that will make you feel as though you are in middle earth.  You will soon find massive rock cliffs, and Raven Cliffs Falls pouring down 40 foot through a crevasse and down the cliffs.

Continuing on GA 348

Returning to GA 348 you'll continue on your drive, and ascent upward.  The byway continues to wind through the Chattahoochee National Forest.  Along the way, in this section, you’ll come to several overlooks.  The higher up you climb, the bigger the views.

Just prior to reaching the summit of the byway, an overlook on the left looks down onto North Georgia’s Dahlonega Gold Belt.  Here you'll get a full view of Yonah Mountain, with the its large cliff face.  The Georgia Piedmont stretches across the horizon, providing very long range views. 

Once past the overlook, you'll continue to climb the curve up to Hogpen Gap, and you'll cross the famous Appalachian Trail as it crossed the road here.  This is a great place to stop, take a break, enjoy the views, and even hike on the famous AT, just so you can say you did!

Just past the AT parking lot is another overlook into the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The view from this overlook  is spectacular and one of the best you'll see!

Descending Down GA 348

From the last overlook, you'll begin a very steep descent down.  The descent will continue for miles, as you slowly work your way down to the base of the mountain.   At the bottom, you'll continue on GA 348, passing relatively flat pasture land until GA 348 ends.

At the intersection of GA 348 and and GA 180, you'll take a right on GA 180.  You'll begin another long ascent up to the entrance of Brasstown Bald on the left.

Brasstown Bald

After entering Brasstown Bald park, a winding and steep paved road will take you to the upper parking lot, just below the bald itself.

Directly next to the parking lot is a visitor center and gift shop.  The trailhead to the top of the bald is there as well.  

The trail to the top is paved and very steep, and is about a 1 mile roundtrip walk/hike.  If you can't walk or prefer not to walk, you can pay a fee for the tour bus ride up and back.   

The top of Brasstown Bald has a large wooden observation deck with a stone tower, which is closed.   There is also a museum at the top, next to the observation tower.   The views are the highlight of your visit and are amazing.   From the top, you can see all of the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, and even parts of the same range in North Carolina.

Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains at 4,784 feet.

High Schoals Creek Falls/Blue Hole Falls

After leaving Brasstown Bald, you'll continue left on GA 180 then turn right on GA 17.  You'll see the trailhead and parking area for High Schoals Falls on your right, shortly after.

This is a great hike, where in a short distance (2-miles roundtrip) you'll see two of the most beautiful GA waterfalls!   

You hike begins at the trailhead, located off gravel forest service road 283.  The trail descends into the forest, where you will be surrounded by old-growth trees and mountain laurel.  The trail slowly approaches High Schoals Creek, which you will soon hear as you hike closer to it.  You'll pass through a campground before crossing the creek.

The trail passes through more campsites, and you'll reach a small bridge just before the sidepath that takes you down to Blue Hole Falls.   As you reach the falls, you'll see a blue hole at the base, with Blue Hole Falls above it, hence the name.

Continue on the main trail to High Schoals Falls.  Some old stone stairs will lead you down to the falls.

Return the way you came, but it's an unrelenting climb back up.

Back to Helen

You'll return to GA 17, and drive back to Helen GA to complete your adventure on the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway in Georgia.

There are a number of additional hiking trails and few more waterfalls we didn't mention in this guide, as we focused on the bigger highlights, but we encourage you to explore all the different trails and options along this beautiful and wonderful scenic drive.

Ride along with us, as we drive from Cherokee to Gatlinburg along Newfound Gap Road in the Fall!

Cherokee NC

Your drive begins just outside of Cherokee NC, at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, the Cherokee entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  You'll definitely want to stop here at the visitor center, and if you have time, explore the mountain farm museum.   If you are coming through early in the morning, or late in the evening, you can often find Elk grazing in the fields next to the visitor center.

Once you're done head out and continue right down Newfound Gap Rd.   Just a short distance up the road, you'll see signs on your right for Mingus Mill, another very historic and beautiful place to stop.   If you visit in the summer, be sure to pick up some corn meal ground right there at the operating mill!

Exit the mill, and turn left onto Newfound Gap Road to continue your adventure.   Riding along Newfound Gap Rd, you'll pass by a number of hiking trails, and pull-offs.  In the first section, before your start ascending up the mountain, you'll be right next to the Oconaluftee River.  Lots of great photo opportunities here.

Smokemont

Smokemont will be a few minutes down the road on the right, and includes both a horse camp and riding stables, and a large campground.  Just off the road as you turn into Smokemont is Lufty Baptist Church.   You'll definitely want to pull over, park, and visit this historic church.  It even has a double seater outhouse in the back!

Climbing up to Newfound Gap

After passing Smokemont, you'll begin the ascent up to Newfound Gap.   Once you break through the tree tops, there will be a number of overlooks providing some of the most beautiful long distance views you'll ever see in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  During this portion of the drive, you'll gain 3,000 feet of elevation in only 18 miles!

Clingmans Dome

Just before reaching Newfound Gap, you'll pass by Clingmans Dome Rd on your left.  If you have time, this 7-mile road will take you out to Clingmans Dome, the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The views from the parking area are fantastic, but for even better views, walk up the very steep but short trail to the top of the Observation Deck.  You can also explore the Appalachian Trail here a well.

Newfound Gap

Newfound Gap is the lowest drivable pass through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, at 5,041 feet in elevation.  Folks, that's almost a mile high!  Weather here is much harsher, and often gets snow, when surrounding lower level areas don't.  You can expect temperatures at Newfound Gap to be 10-15 degrees cooler, and the winds much stronger, so bundle up!

A large stone memorial and observation deck, named Rockefeller Memorial, pays tribute to the $5 million donation from the Rockefeller Foundation that helped complete land acquisitions for the park.  It was here, that Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on September 2, 1940, "for the permanent enjoyment of the people.".

The Appalachian Trail crosses Newfound Gap Road here, and continues into the park next to the memorial.  While visiting, you can take a short walk, or even a longer hike, and say you've hiked the AT!

Newfound Gap is split by the state lines of Tennessee and North Carolina. You can literally stand on the state line, and be in both states at once.

Descending down to Gatlinburg

Returning to Newfound Gap Road, you'll go right to Gatlinburg.  Along this stretch of the road, you'll begin the back and forth descent down to Gatlinburg.   The first section will offer some incredible views and a few tunnels to go through.  Further down, you'll be creekside to some gorgeous creeks, and a number of pull-offs for accessing them.

Alum Cave Trail

On the way down, you'll pass by a large parking area, that is the trailhead for the most popular trail in the Park, Alum Cave Trail (also called Alum Bluff Cave Trail).  This is the quintessential Great Smoky Mountains hike, and can be taken all the way to the top of Mount LeConte at 6,594 feet.   The hike up is one heck of a hike, but absolutely amazing.

Alum Bluff Trailhead area is VERY busy and often very congested, so please drive slowly.

Chimney Tops and Chimney Tops Picnic Area

Next you'll reach the also very popular Chimney Tops area, which has a really nice hiking trail, and a picnic area.  You'll pass the hiking area first, followed by the picnic area.   

The Chimney Tops trail used to go all the way up to the rocky faces of Chimney Tops, where the more daring could get incredible long distance views from the steep and tall rocky cliffs. However, this upper portion of the trail was closed due to damage from the tragic Gatlinburg fires in 2016. The lower portion is still open and makes for a nice hike.

Sugarlands Visitor Center, Gatlinburg

After returning to 1,462 feet in elevation, you'll reach the very popular Sugarlands Visitor center.  The Gatlinburg entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.   You can stop here for restrooms, information, and a museum.

If you follow the road to the left before reaching the visitors center, it will take you Laurel Falls, Elkmont and Cades Cove.

This wraps up the beautiful drive along Newfound Gap Road.

Skyline Drive History

In 1924, plans were put together for a national park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The key feature was to be a "sky-line drive" that would provide views of the surrounding land.   

President Hoover, who owned a summer home in the area, started the construction of the road. Groundbreaking for the effort started in 1931. The road was completed in sections, with the last section being finished in 1939. As with many mountain projects, the Civilian Conservation Corps was significantly involved with the road's construction.  

Access Points for Skyline Drive

There are 4 access points for Skyline Drive Virginia:

• Near Rt. 66 and 340 Front Royal Entrance Station (Milepost 0)
• Rt. 211 at Thornton Gap Entrance Station
• Rt 33 Swift Run Gap Entrance Station
• Rt. 64 and Rt. 250 Rockfish Gap Entrance Station (also the northern entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway).

Travel Tips for Skyline Drive VA

We’ve been traveling Skyline Drive VA for many years and we’ve learned a few things and offer these Skyline Drive Travel Tips to help you enjoy your visit:

1. Take your time and don’t hurry. The Skyline drive speed limit is 35 MPH. Don’t speed! Many people are there to enjoy the views and will suddenly pull off or be driving very slow. If you speed, you could easily run into them or some of the wildlife around the Parkway. Take your time, go slow, and enjoy the views and journey.  
2. Weather–While traveling the parkway, you will often experience very thick fog and often rain. Be extra careful in these conditions. Turn on your headlights or even your flashers and slow down. We‘ve often been in conditions where you couldn’t see over 20-30 feet in front of your car! If you feel uncomfortable driving, pull over at an overlook and wait for the fog to clear up or thin out.
3. Fill’er Up! Make sure you have plenty of gas before you get on the Skyline Drive. There are areas where there are no gas stations for a bit.  
4. Bring layers of clothing. Due elevation changes, weather on the Skyline Drive can vary by location and time of day. It can also be sunny and warm one minute, then a few minutes later, cold and windy. We suggest layering if you plan to be outside at all, and this includes even getting out at overlooks which can often be cool and windy.
5. Pulling Over–Pulling over along the Skyline Drive is permitted unless signs say otherwise. Some of the best and unique views are available at locations other than the popular overlooks. Just make sure you pull completely off the parkway and make sure you can get back out. The sides of the parkway are often muddy, so make sure you don’t get stuck. If you have a 4-wheel drive, it’s always a good option.
6. Be prepared for crowds–The Skyline Drive is very popular, and often full of cars and people, especially in the Fall Season. Plan for extra time and be patient.   
7. RVs–RVs are allowed and welcome on the entire Skyline Drive, including pull along trailers. BUT make sure your RV isn’t taller than Marys Rock Tunnel, at 12 ft 8 in. Also, if you have traffic behind you that wants to go faster, please pull over.
8. Assume your cell phone will not work–Cell phone service along the Skyline Drive is spotty at best. Plan for your phone not working in most locations. If you require cell phone use, we would suggest getting off the Skyline Drive.
9. Camping–Camping is permitted on the Skyline Drive and in the Shenendoah National Park at designated campgrounds. You cannot, most times, just camp on the side of the road.  
10. Picnics and Food–Packing a picnic lunch and eating at one of the many scenic overlooks or picnic areas on The Parkway is a real treat and highly recommended. Just make sure you don’t leave any food or trash behind. Make sure that food is packed in air-tight containers if possible, especially if you plan to park and leave your car for any period.  There are bears, and they may break into your car to get to the food. 
11. Bring some water–Even if you aren’t planning on hiking, you might be tempted to want to walk out to one of the remote overlooks or down one of the shorter trails. Bring some water just in case.
12. Bicycles/Motorcycles–Bicycles and, of course, Motorcycles are both allowed on the Skyline Drive. On any day, you will often see many of both. Watch for them and when passing bicycles, please stay far behind them until you get to a good straight area to pass. Do not pass them on a turn.
13. Camera–Make sure you bring a camera. we can guarantee you that you’ll want to take pictures and plenty of them.

Skyline Drive Wildlife

While traveling on Skyline Drive, you may run into many of the animals the live in the Shenandoah Valley and travel on or cross Skyline Drive.   

These animals include: Black Bear, Deer, turkey, raccoons, rabbits, opossum, skunk, birds, red and gray fox, beaver, river otter, mink, weasel, woodchuck, squirrel, chipmunks and more! Be sure to keep an eye out for these animals, as they may dart out in front of you while driving. To better see the animals, pull off to the side, and remain in your vehicle to be extra safe.

Things to do on the Skyline Drive, by Milepost

Not only is Skyline Drive a beautiful and peaceful drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, it's also full of fun things to see and do. Here are just a few highlights!

Milepost 0 - Front Royal

Front Royal is a beautiful mountain town at Milepost 0 on Skyline Drive VA. In Front Royal are the popular and amazing Skyline Caverns. Skyline Caverns is the closest natural wonder to Washington, DC and makes for a great family destination that everyone will enjoy!

Milepost 4.6 - Dickey Ridge Visitor Center

Skyline Drive has four different visitor centers. Each offers amenities such as restrooms, information desks, exhibits, orientation movies, bookstores, publications, maps, backcountry permits, and first aid. Ranger led hikes are often done from these as well.

Milepost 22.2 - Matthews Arm Campground and Traces Trail

Traces Trail is a hike that follows around Mathews Arm Campground. Along the trail, you’ll discover historic traces left behind by former residents of the area. This 1.7-mile trail takes you through an oak forest that feels like a step back in time.

Milepost 31.5 Thornton Gap Entrance Station - Luray Caverns

Thorton Gap Entrance at 211 (Lee Highway) provides access to the town of Luray, and the largest caverns on the east coast, Luray Caverns. Luray Caverns is the most popular attraction in the Shenandoah Valley and Skyline Drive.

Milepost 42.7 - Stony Man parking area

This 1.6 mile round-trip and easy hike, which starts from the parking area, takes you to the cliffs of Stony Man’s summit–the second highest peak in the park at 4,011 feet.

Milepost 42.7 - Skyland Resort

Shenandoah National Park's largest lodging facility is at the highest point on Skyline Drive Virginia at 3,680 feet in elevation. Skyland Resort includes 178 units ranging from historic cabins to modern hotel rooms and suites. There is also a dining room, family-friendly entertainment, ranger guided programs, horseback riding and a conference hall.

Milepost 45.5 - Hawksbill Gap Parking Area and Hawksbill Loop Hike

The 2.9 mile round-trip and moderate hiking trail takes you on a loop hike and provides some fantastic vistas which are accessed via the Appalachian and Salamander trails.

Milepost 50.7 - Dark Hollow Falls

This is the shortest trail to a waterfall in Shenandoah National Forest. Dark Hollow Falls Trail is a 1.4-mile round-trip and a moderate trail takes you down a pretty steep descent to Dark Hollow Falls. The trail is steep, and very rocky.   

This is one of the most popular and well-traveled trails. The hike back up is challenging, so know your limits!

Milepost 51 - Harry F. Byrd, Sr. Visitor Center

Milepost 51.2 - Big Meadows Lodge

Big Meadows Lodge is a smaller lodge in Shenandoah National Park compared to Skyland Resort, having just 25 rooms and 72 cabins, suites and traditional rooms. The lodge has a dining room, family-friendly entertainment, guided ranger programs and a Visitor Center nearby.

Lewis Falls Trail starts here at the amphitheater parking area. The trail is a 3.3 mile and moderate hike down to Lewis Falls.

Milepost 56.4 - Bearfence Trail

This 1.4-mile round-trip hike takes you on a rock scramble up to the top with 360 degree views. If heights are not your thing, you'll want to skip this trail, and take the easier Bearfence Viewpoint hike.

Milepost 79.5 - Loft Mount Information Center

Milepost 105 - Waynesboro, VA

Appalachian Trail

The famous Appalachian Trail runs parallel to Skyline Drive with 500 miles of hiking trails, wildlife and outdoor adventure programs.

Beyond Skyline Drive

Skyline Drive offers breathtaking scenery along the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, but there's an entire world waiting to be explored within Shenandoah National Park and beyond.

Here are some exciting options to expand your adventure:

Visitor Centers

• Stony Man Visitor Center (Milepost 31.1): 
• The center acts as an entrance to the park's northern section. You can explore exhibits on the park's ecology and history, get maps and park information, and join ranger talks on local flora and fauna.
• Mathews Arm Visitor Center (Milepost 87.5): Near the southern entrance, this visitor center provides a similar resource hub. Explore the park's geology, check out wildlife displays, and get personalized trail and activity suggestions from park rangers.

Historical Sites

• Skyland Resort Historic District (Milepost 41.7): Discover the park's captivating history by exploring this district. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it features the Skyland Lodge, built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in the 1930s, and showcases a rustic architectural style.
• Byrd Visitor Center (Milepost 51): This former lodge, built in the 1930s, now serves as a visitor center. Discover displays showcasing the park's cultural history, including President Harry F. Byrd's involvement in its establishment.

Where to start?

The Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway is a loop, so you can start anywhere along the route and easily return to your starting point. The main access points are:

• Brevard NC - From Brevard, you'll pick up Highway 276 West and head west through Pisgah National Forest. Or Highway 64 South to Rosman NC.
• Waynesville NC - From Waynesville NC, you'll head out Highway 276 East, and catch Highway 215 South from Bethel NC heading towards the Blue Ridge Parkway.
• Rosman NC - From Rosman, NC you'll take either Highway 215 North to the Blue Ridge Parkway or Highway 64 East to Brevard NC

Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway Walkthrough

Waynesville and Maggie Valley NC are popular vacation destinations in Western NC, and Maggie Valley in particular is a very popular destination for motorcycle enthusiasts.  Given that, we'll start our walkthrough of the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway (the Copperhead Loop) from there.

From downtown Waynesville NC, take Highway 276 East to the small town of Bethel NC.  There is a very nice convenience store here to gas up and grab refreshments.   Just past Jukebox Junction, a popular local restaurant, is the intersection to Highway 215.  Turn right onto Highway 215 heading South towards the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Highway 215

Highway 215 is a real hidden gem and is very scenic. This drive during the Fall is absolutely gorgeous, as the forest provides a color canopy over the road. If you enjoy fishing, the waters of the West Fork of the Pigeon River, you'll see along your drive, are full of mountain trout.

On your way to the Parkway, you'll constantly increase in elevation, and pass a number of scenic points of interest, including:

• Lake Logan - A private lake that you'll cross over. Take a few minutes to pull over and enjoy the views here. It's gorgeous. Watch for the American Bald Eagle, that is often flying around or perched in this area.
• Sunburst Campground - A small national forest campground, perfect for small RVs and tents.
• Sunburst Swimming Hole - One of the most popular area swimming holes in the area is along the side of the road.  
• Sunburst Falls - A very popular and beautiful roadside waterfall. Actually, there are several waterfalls in this area, just a short hike off Highway 215. Sunburst Falls flows beneath one of two beautiful stone bridges (shown in the photo below).
• Many other waterfalls are also in this area before the Parkway, including: Wildcat Falls, Little Bird Falls, Lower and Upper Bubbling Spring Branch Falls.
• Blue Ridge Parkway - At the peak of highway 215, you'll reach the Blue Ridge Parkway, your first crossing of two on this loop ride. 

After passing under the parkway, continue south on Highway 215, where the road will become very curvy, and you'll descend rapidly in elevation.  

Along the way you'll pass the access roads to both Dill Falls and Courthouse Falls.  You'll also pass by Living Water Ministries further down. Living Waters Ministries is a Christian Retreat Center, with three publicly accessible waterfalls and historic buildings. Here is our video:

Access to the waterfalls is via trail located next to a small pull over on the side of Highway 215.

Highway 64 to 276

Highway 215 will run into highway 64 near Rosman. Turn left to continue on the loop towards Brevard, or take a detour to the right towards Cashiers and Sapphire where you can see more waterfalls, including: Whitewater Falls, Dry Falls, Callasaja Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Rainbow Falls, and Turtleback Falls.

Highway 276

After passing through Brevard, turn left onto Highway 276.  If you have time, be sure to stop at downtown Brevard.  There are some unique stores and restaurants there.  While in the area, you can also visit Dupont State Park, only 15 minutes away.  

Highway 276 will be one of the most beautiful sections of the drive, with numerous scenic points of interest in Pisgah National Forest, including:

• Looking Glass Falls - A gorgeous and very popular road side waterfall.
• FR475 - Forest Road 475 will take you to a number of great hikes and waterfalls, including: Cedar Rock Falls, Upper Cedar Rock Falls, Grogan Creek Falls, and Cove Creek Falls.
• Moore Cove Falls - A short hike to a pretty waterfall you can stand under.
• Sliding Rock - A very popular and well-known area, where you can slide down a natural waterfall and plunge into the crisp and cool water below.  
• Cradle of Forestry - A really neat museum and attraction founded on the original training grounds for Park Rangers.

After passing the Cradle of Forestry, you'll twist and wind your way up the mountain, and reach your second crossing of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  

You'll then begin a very twisty and curvy descent back down to Bethel and the intersection of Highway 276 and Highway 215 to complete the loop.  Just a mile or two past the Parkway, watch for the roadside waterfall on your left, just before a sharp right hand curve.

Where to eat along the way

While there are very few restaurants along the scenic drive itself, several nearby towns offer plenty of great options:

• Waynesville
• Canton
• Brevard
• Highlands

Tips for driving in the mountains

Driving the mountains is very different from driving in the city or in flat rural areas. Mountain driving can be much more dangerous. Here are some tips to make your mountain drive much more enjoyable!

• Avoid sudden stops and always pull over at overlooks or paved or gravel pull overs. This will keep you from getting stuck, and protect the natural environment.
• Drive slowly, and enjoy the journey. Too many people focus on just getting to their destination and miss many of the wonderful scenes and wildlife as they rush through.
• Bring layers of clothing and rain gear. Mountain weather can be very unpredictable, and elevation changes as you drive can yield very different temperatures. Temperature changes can often be 15-20 degrees!  
• Watch for motorcycles - Popular roads, like this one, are often popular with motorcycle riders. Watch for them, and keep your distance.
• Wildlife sightings are rare, but keep an eye out - you just never know what you might see!
• Don't depend on having cell phone service. When in remote and high elevation areas, you often won't have cell service. So bring maps or a GPS that doesn't rely on cell service.
• Restrooms, gas stations, and places to eat can be rare. Make sure you plan ahead and bring some snacks for the kids.  
• Be Patient - During busy times, like summer and fall, popular drives can often be very congested and busy. Be patient to keep your stress levels down and allow everyone to have a great visit and drive.

Important Update – Road and Area Closure

Because of damage from Hurricane Helene in this area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Heintooga Round Bottom Road is currently closed, along with the surrounding section of the park. Park staff are unclear when the road will re-open, and it may not be for the 2025 season.

Access is restricted until further notice while crews assess damage and work to restore the area. Balsam Mountain Road (Heintooga Spur Road), off the Blue Ridge Parkway, is now open all the way to end, where Round Bottom Road begins.

Heintooga Round Bottom Road - Great Smoky Mountains National Park

For those of you who feel adventurous, or those just looking for that "off the beaten path" scenic drive through the mountains, Heintooga Round Bottom Road might be just what you're looking for. The road is rough, remote, incredibly scenic, and long.

With that being said, rough might not do it justice. Heintooga Round Bottom Road is a real rough and rustic mountain road, and one not intended for the casual driver or casual vehicle.

While probably drivable in a normal car in optimal weather, we would definitely recommend driving this road in at least a 2-wheel drive SUV with some ground clearance, or preferably a 4x4.  

We've driven this road a few times, and always in our Jeep Wrangler. We've never had to use 4-wheel drive, but the extra ground clearance and stiffer suspension was really helpful.

We don't say all of this to discourage you, but we just want you to fully understand what this road really is. The road and surrounding mountains are beautiful and fascinating. We'll take this road over any of the normal and highly traveled roads.

Directions to Heintooga Round Bottom Road

Heintooga Round Bottom Road is located off the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Maggie Valley NC. Coming down the Parkway, towards Cherokee, turn right on Heintooga/Balsam Mountain Road at Milepost 458.2. The entrance will be obvious. Just look for the 3 separate entry ways going into the entrance.

Follow this 9 mile long paved road all the way to the end, where you will reach a large cul-du-sac and a picnic area.  You'll see the narrow gravel, and clearly marked Heintooga Round Bottom Road straight ahead of you (shown in the photo above).

Heintooga/Balsam Mountain Road are usually open from late May through October. They can close during at anytime though due to fallen trees or severe weather.

Heintooga Round Bottom Road - What you'll see

As you begin your drive, you'll notice almost immediately how the forest closes in around you. Through the entire drive, you see nothing but untouched, pristine and raw forest. The forest and wildflowers extend right up next to your vehicle as you slowly weave your way down from 5,535 feet to below 2,000 feet in Cherokee.

The road is narrow, but one way, so you don't have to worry about oncoming traffic until far later in the drive. There are plenty of pull overs as well, so you can stop and take photos. When the road turns to two-way traffic, there are signs clearly showing this.

There are no major scenic attractions as you wind down Heintooga Round Bottom Road. Instead, pay attention to the small things, like the little waterfalls along the trails, created as water cascades down the small rock faces. Pay attention to the variety of wildflowers, and look out for wildlife, including Black Bears, elk, and deer that are in this area.

The last third of the drive is our favorite, and you'll travel alongside a small creek that grows as you descend the mountain, eventually crossing a large bridge. You'll run across several trailheads as well, to trails into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including a trial into Cataloochee Valley.

If you stop and park before crossing the bridge, on your left and up in the woods, are two small waterfalls. You can hear them from the road. They aren't very photogenic, but worth the short walk to see them.

You can access the creek and the area under the bridge from this side as well. You can also drive across the bridge and access the creek from there as well.

Before they built the bridge, people used to drive through the water to cross the creek. It's too bad you can't do that anymore!

From this bridge out to Big Cove Road is the most photographic area of the drive. You'll travel alongside the creek, which is full of small waterfalls and cascades. The photographic spots are endless, and the creek and surrounding woods are just gorgeous.

You'll also pass by a small horse camp, and often see horses in this area, along with other families and people camping on the in the surrounding primitive campsites in the area.

You'll exit the area onto Big Cove Road in Cherokee and pass the Cherokee Trout Farm. Turn left to head to downtown Cherokee. Be sure and stop by Mingo Falls on your way by.

Where to Stay When Visiting Heintooga Round Bottom Road

There are plenty of lodging options throughout the area, but as mountain locals, we recommend staying in either Maggie Valley or Cherokee. Both make excellent home bases and offer easy access to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and several of our favorite attractions in the region.

Maggie Valley is a superb choice if you're looking for a quiet mountain town with scenic views, locally owned restaurants, and easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway. We often recommend it to visitors who want a relaxing mountain getaway while still being close to the park.

Cherokee is another excellent option, especially if you plan to spend more time exploring the southern Smokies. Besides being close to the national park, you'll find attractions like Mingo Falls, the Oconaluftee Visitor Center, the Museum of the Cherokee People, and the outdoor drama Unto These Hills.
