Triple Falls is a beautiful three-tiered waterfall on the Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest near Brevard, North Carolina. The river drops approximately 120 feet across three broad cascades, creating one of the most impressive and recognizable waterfalls in the forest.

We visited Triple Falls in August 2026, starting from the Hooker Falls Access Area and crossing the pedestrian bridge to reach the Triple Falls Trail. During our visit, we followed a small rocky side trail for a close-up view from the base of the falls, then climbed the short but very steep section of trail to the main observation area, which offers the best view of all three cascades.

In this guide, we’ll show you where to park, what to expect along the trail, which viewing areas are currently open following Hurricane Helene, and how Triple Falls became one of DuPont Forest’s most recognizable filming locations from The Hunger Games.

Directions: From Asheville, take I-26 East to Exit 40 for Asheville Regional Airport. Turn right onto NC 280 and continue for approximately 16 miles toward Brevard. Turn left onto US 64 East and travel 3.7 miles. Turn right onto Crab Creek Road and continue for 4.3 miles. Turn right onto DuPont Road, which becomes Staton Road, and continue for 3.1 miles. The signed Hooker Falls Access Area will be on the right, just before the bridge over the Little River.

Is Triple Falls Open After Hurricane Helene?

Yes, Triple Falls is open following Hurricane Helene. The Triple Falls Trail, the small side trail to the base of the lower falls, and the main observation area were all open when we visited in August 2026. Visitors can also continue beyond Triple Falls to High Falls.

However, the stairs and trail leading down to the broad rock shelf in the middle of Triple Falls remain closed because of damage from Helene. Barricades are in place, and visitors should not attempt to enter the closed area.

Even with the middle shelf closed, we were still able to enjoy two very different views of Triple Falls. The rocky side trail at the base provided a close-up view of the lower cascade, while the main observation area offered the best longer-distance view of all three sections of the waterfall.

Conditions can change, so check the latest Triple Falls information from Friends of DuPont Forest before visiting.

Parking For Triple Falls

The closest and most convenient place to park for Triple Falls is the Hooker Falls Access Area on Staton Road. This is where we parked during our August 2026 visit. Restrooms are available here, and the Triple Falls Trail begins across the pedestrian bridge near the upper portion of the parking area.

Something that is easy to miss is that the Hooker Falls Access Area has two parking lots. The first lot is immediately after you pull into the access area, while a second lot is farther uphill beside the restrooms and closer to the Triple Falls trailhead.

We made the mistake of parking in the first lot without realizing there was another one closer to the trailhead. This added an uphill walk to the restrooms and pedestrian bridge before we even began the hike. We recommend checking the lot beside the restrooms first. If it is full, the first lot provides additional parking farther down the hill.

Parking is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The lots can fill early, especially during summer, fall color season, weekends, and holidays. The N.C. Forest Service recommends arriving before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. to improve your chances of finding a space.

Triple Falls can also be reached from the High Falls Access Area. This is an option if you plan to visit High Falls first, but the Hooker Falls Access Area provides the shorter and more direct hike to Triple Falls.

Hiking to Triple Falls

From the Hooker Falls Access Area, the hike to Triple Falls is approximately 0.5 miles each way, making it about a one-mile round trip if you hike only to the main observation area. Although the hike is short, one very steep section makes it more challenging than the distance might suggest.

From the parking area, follow the signs for Triple Falls and cross the pedestrian bridge over the Little River. Early in the hike, the trail takes you beneath Staton Road before continuing upstream alongside the river. The beginning of the trail is relatively easy and provides a pleasant walk beside the Little River.

After approximately 0.3 miles, look for a small side trail leading toward the base of the lower waterfall. This short path is rocky and requires some careful rock hopping, but it allowed us to get a much closer look at the lower section of Triple Falls. Use caution around the base, especially when the rocks are wet, and do not climb on the waterfall itself.

After returning to the main trail, the hike becomes considerably steeper. The climb is fairly short, but it is very steep and may require taking a few breaks. The trail surface is mostly gravel, which can also feel slippery when hiking back downhill.

At the top of the steep section, you will reach the main observation area for Triple Falls. This overlook provides the best longer-distance view of the waterfall and allows you to see all three cascades together.

Again, the stairs that previously led from the main trail to the broad rock shelf in the middle of Triple Falls remain closed. The area is fenced and clearly marked, so remain behind the barriers.

After enjoying the overlook, you can return to the Hooker Falls Access Area for an approximately one-mile round-trip hike. You can also continue along the trail for about another half mile to visit High Falls. We chose to continue to High Falls, making it easy to see all three of DuPont Forest’s most popular waterfalls during the same outing.

What makes Triple Falls different from nearby Hooker Falls and High Falls is the way the Little River descends in three distinct stages. Instead of one continuous drop, the water flows over three broad cascades separated by exposed sections of granite. Together, the cascades drop approximately 120 feet and give the waterfall its stair-step appearance and name.

Triple Falls looks very different depending on where you view it. From the base, you primarily see the lower cascade, but you are close enough to appreciate the sound, movement, and power of the water. The main observation area provides the classic view of Triple Falls, allowing you to step back and see all three cascades together.

We enjoyed visiting both viewpoints because each offered a completely different perspective. The base provided a closer and more dramatic experience, while the main observation area gave us the best overall view of the waterfall’s size and unique three-tiered formation.

Triple Falls is located between High Falls upstream and Hooker Falls downstream. All three waterfalls are part of the Little River and can easily be visited during the same hike.

Can You Swim at Triple Falls?

No, we do not recommend swimming at Triple Falls. During our August 2026 visit, we did not see any good or safe places to enter the water. The river flows across large rocks and steep cascades, and the areas near the base are rocky, uneven, and potentially slippery.

DuPont State Recreational Forest also prohibits swimming or wading within 300 feet upstream of waterfalls, as well as climbing, jumping, or diving at waterfalls. Enjoy Triple Falls from the base and designated observation areas, but remain on the rocks and trails away from the moving water.

If swimming is part of your plans, nearby Hooker Falls has a broad pool below the waterfall and is generally the better option when water conditions are safe.

Triple Falls and The Hunger Games Movie

Triple Falls is one of several locations in DuPont State Recreational Forest that appeared in the 2012 movie The Hunger Games. The forest’s rivers, waterfalls, and wooded trails helped represent the outdoor arena where Katniss Everdeen and the other tributes competed.

Triple Falls is most closely associated with the scene in which Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence, searches for the injured Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson. She eventually discovers him camouflaged among the rocks beside the river below Triple Falls.

The movie does not show the entire three-tiered waterfall during the scene, so it can be easy to miss if you are not familiar with the location. Fans may be more likely to recognize the exposed rocks, flowing water, and surrounding forest than the complete waterfall.

Visitors can still see the general filming area from the open viewpoints near the base and the main observation area. However, the actual filming area near the middle of Triple Falls is closed and not accessible.

Other locations within DuPont State Recreational Forest were also used during filming, including Bridal Veil Falls and areas near High Falls. Triple Falls also appeared in the 1992 movie The Last of the Mohicans.

Where to Stay When Visiting Triple Falls

Allora Boutique Inn in Hendersonville, NC

Both Brevard and Hendersonville make convenient home bases for visiting Triple Falls and the other waterfalls in DuPont State Recreational Forest. The best choice depends on what else you would like to experience during your trip.

Staying in Brevard

Brevard is a great choice if waterfalls, hiking, and outdoor adventures are the primary focus of your visit. In addition to DuPont State Recreational Forest, you will be within easy driving distance of Pisgah National Forest, Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, and many other popular outdoor destinations.

Downtown Brevard also offers a nice selection of restaurants, breweries, shops, and local businesses to enjoy after a day on the trails.

Staying in Hendersonville

Downtown Hendersonville, NC

Hendersonville is another excellent place to stay when visiting Triple Falls. Its lively downtown provides plenty of restaurants, shops, breweries, and evening activities, while still keeping you within a convenient drive of DuPont State Recreational Forest.

One of our top places to stay in Hendersonville is Echo Mountain Inn. We enjoyed its peaceful mountain setting, historic character, comfortable rooms, and freshly prepared breakfast. The inn dates back to 1896 and is located in Laurel Park, approximately three miles from downtown Hendersonville. It is a wonderful choice if you want a quiet and relaxing place to return to after hiking.

We also recommend Allora, a small boutique inn located just two blocks from Main Street in downtown Hendersonville. Allora offers a modern take on a traditional bed-and-breakfast, with comfortable rooms, welcoming common areas, gourmet breakfast, and freshly prepared coffee and espresso drinks. Its location makes it especially convenient for walking downtown for dinner, shopping, or an evening out.

Hooker Falls is a wide, 12-foot waterfall on the Little River in DuPont State Recreational Forest near Brevard, North Carolina. Although it isn’t one of DuPont’s tallest waterfalls, its beautiful setting, short hike, and broad swimming area make it one of the forest’s most popular places to visit.

We returned to Hooker Falls in August 2026 to see how the area looked following Hurricane Helene and to update this guide with current photos and firsthand information. Below, we’ll share what we found, including which of the two parking lots puts you closest to the trailhead, what to expect along the 0.8-mile round-trip hike, and how to visit nearby Triple Falls and High Falls while you’re there.

Is Hooker Falls Open After Hurricane Helene?

Like much of DuPont State Recreational Forest, the Hooker Falls area was impacted by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Flooding along the Little River caused erosion, washed debris into the area, and temporarily closed the trail and falls while crews worked to restore access.

Today, visitors can once again enjoy Hooker Falls, and the trail from the Hooker Falls Access Area has reopened.

If this is your first visit since Hurricane Helene, you may notice that parts of the riverbank and surrounding landscape look a little different from they did before the storm. That's a reminder of just how powerful the flooding was throughout Western North Carolina. Fortunately, Hooker Falls itself wasn't significantly affected.

Parking at Hooker Falls

The Hooker Falls Access Area has two parking lots. The first lot is the one you reach when pulling into the access area. A second lot is located farther in, next to the restrooms and the Hooker Falls trailhead.

We made the mistake of parking in the first lot and then had to walk uphill to reach the restrooms and trailhead. We recommend checking the lot near the restrooms first since it will put you closer to the beginning of the hike.

Parking is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Both lots can fill early on summer and fall weekends, so plan to arrive before 9:00 a.m., visit on a weekday, or arrive later in the afternoon. If both lots are full, do not park along Staton Road.

During our June 2026 visit, the access area had restrooms, changing rooms, picnic tables, and trash cans.

Hiking the Hooker Falls Trail

The hike to Hooker Falls is one of the easiest and most family-friendly waterfall hikes in DuPont State Recreational Forest. Beginning from the Hooker Falls Access Area parking lot on Staton Road, the trail follows a wide, well-maintained gravel path through a beautiful hardwood forest.

One interesting stop near the beginning of the hike is the Hooker-Moore Cemetery, a small historic family cemetery reached by a short side trail. Dating back to the 1800s, the cemetery serves as a reminder that long before DuPont became a state recreational forest, families lived, farmed, and built their lives throughout this area. It’s an easy stop if you’re interested in local history, but please remain on the established trail and treat the cemetery with respect.

The walk to the falls is only about 0.4 miles one way (0.8 miles round trip) and gradually descends toward the Little River. While the trail is mostly smooth and easy to navigate, you'll have a gentle uphill walk back to the parking area.

As you approach the river, you'll begin to hear the sound of rushing water before the trail opens to a scenic viewing area overlooking Hooker Falls. A short spur trail leads down to the riverbank, where you can enjoy a closer view of the waterfall and the large pool below. During the warmer months, it's common to see visitors swimming, wading, or relaxing along the rocky shoreline.

Although the hike is suitable for most ages and fitness levels, we recommend wearing sturdy shoes, especially after rain when the rocks near the river can become slippery. If you plan to swim, bring a towel and water shoes, but always use caution around moving water, as river conditions can change quickly after heavy rainfall.

Hooker Falls

We've visited Hooker Falls several times over the years, and every visit reminds us why it's one of the most popular waterfalls in DuPont State Recreational Forest. While the waterfall stands only about 12 feet tall, its wide cascade, beautiful forest setting, and easy accessibility make it a destination that's enjoyable in every season.

The waterfall spills into a large, clear pool that has become one of Western North Carolina's favorite summer swimming holes. During our warmer-weather visits, we've seen families spread out along the rocks, children splashing in the shallow areas near the shore, and swimmers cooling off beneath the falls. It has a fun, relaxed atmosphere that makes it a great place to spend an hour or two after the short hike. As always, use caution around moving water and avoid swimming after heavy rain, when water levels and currents can rise quickly.

One thing we've always appreciated about Hooker Falls is how accessible it is. You don't have to commit to a long or strenuous hike to experience a beautiful waterfall, making it a great stop for families, photographers, and anyone exploring DuPont for the first time. Whether you're visiting to take a swim, enjoy a picnic, or simply admire the scenery, Hooker Falls is one of those places that keeps drawing us back whenever we're in the area.

Can You Swim at Hooker Falls?

Yes. Visitors can swim in the large pool below Hooker Falls, and it is one of the most popular summer swimming areas in DuPont State Recreational Forest. During warmer weather, it’s common to see families relaxing along the shoreline, children wading near the edge, and swimmers cooling off in the pool.

Even though Hooker Falls is relatively short, the Little River is still moving water. Water levels and currents can change quickly following heavy rain, and rocks or other debris may be hidden below the surface. Avoid swimming during high water, keep children and inexperienced swimmers close, and use extra caution on the slippery rocks near the river.

Never swim or wade above the waterfall, and do not climb, jump, dive, or slide from the falls. Always follow posted signs and remain outside any closed or restricted areas.

If you plan to swim, bring a towel and water shoes. Changing rooms are available near the restrooms in the Hooker Falls parking area.

Hooker Falls in the Movies

Hooker Falls is also famous for its Hollywood connection. The waterfall was one of several filming locations used in the 1992 Academy Award-winning film The Last of the Mohicans, starring Daniel Day-Lewis. It's easy to see why filmmakers chose this location, the waterfall and surrounding forest have a timeless beauty that photographs incredibly well.

Where to Stay When Visiting Hooker Falls

Echo Mountain Inn, Hendersonville, NC

If you're planning to visit Hooker Falls, we recommend staying in Brevard or Hendersonville, NC. Both make an excellent base camps for exploring not only Hooker Falls but also High Falls, Triple Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Looking Glass Falls, Sliding Rock, and many of the area's other waterfalls and hiking trails. Brevard is closer, but Hendersonville offers more lodging and dining options.

Beyond its convenient location, Brevard is one of our favorite mountain towns to visit. Its walkable downtown is filled with locally owned restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, galleries, and outdoor outfitters, making it the perfect place to relax after a day on the trails.

Linville Falls is one of the most impressive waterfall destinations along the Blue Ridge Parkway, with several trails and overlooks offering very different views of the falls and Linville Gorge.

After being closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene, Linville Falls and its main trail system have now reopened. We recently returned to hike the trails, see what had changed, and document the current conditions. The photos throughout this updated guide are from that recent visit, so you’ll get an up-to-date look at what the area is like now.

In this guide, we’ll show you the different trails and overlooks, explain which views we think are worth the hike, and share what remains closed or different since the storm. If you’re planning a visit, keep reading. We’ll help you decide which trail to take and what to expect when you arrive.

Tips for Visiting Linville Falls

Linville Falls is a series of cascades along the Linville River that drop approximately 90 feet before the river continues into Linville Gorge. Upper Falls begins with two side-by-side cascades, followed by a narrow rocky channel and the powerful 45-foot Lower Falls.

Several overlooks provide very different views of the waterfall and gorge. Erwin’s View Trail leads to Upper Falls, Chimney View, Gorge View, and Erwin’s View. On the opposite side of the river, the Plunge Basin Trail offers a closer view of Lower Falls. The trail leading down to the river and base of the falls remains closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene.

Visitors can park in the main paved parking area and follow the posted signs to the different trails. The former visitor center is no longer standing, but portable toilets are available near the parking area. Before beginning your hike, take a moment to look at the trail map and decide which overlooks best fit your available time and hiking ability.

Linville Falls Has Reopened After Hurricane Helene Closures

The visitor center was significantly damaged by Hurricane Helene and has been removed (see below).

Great news for anyone planning a trip to Linville Falls. The Linville Falls trail system has reopened, and visitors can once again access one of the most popular waterfall hikes along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We returned to Linville Falls in July 2026 to see the area for ourselves, hike the reopened trails, and document the changes following Hurricane Helene. The Linville Falls Spur Road at milepost 316.5 is open and leads into the main recreation area, where visitors can access the trails and hike to the overlooks for views of Linville Falls and Linville Gorge. The photos in this updated guide are from our July visit.

There are still a few important things to know before you go. The Linville Falls campground and picnic area remain closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene. The visitor center, shown damaged above, has been removed. The park service is working on a plan to rebuild the visitor center by the end of 2027.

The Blue Ridge Parkway also still has closures south of Linville Falls. While the falls and trails are open again, this part of the Parkway has not fully returned to normal.

We recommend checking the official Blue Ridge Parkway road status page before heading out, especially if you plan to continue south on the Parkway after your visit. Conditions and closures can change as repair work continues.

Even with the remaining closures and visible storm damage, it was wonderful to return to Linville Falls and see visitors enjoying the trails and overlooks again. It is one of the most beautiful and iconic stops along the Parkway, and we are glad access to this special place has been restored.

Parking, Restrooms, and the Former Linville Falls Visitor Center

The former Linville Falls Visitor Center is no longer standing. The building was severely damaged by Hurricane Helene and has since been removed. Visitors can still use the main paved parking area and access the reopened trails, but the gift shop, ranger information desk, maps, and indoor restrooms that were once available inside the visitor center are gone.

Paved Parking Area

The main paved parking area is reached from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Turn onto the Linville Falls Spur Road near Milepost 316.4 and follow the road approximately 1.5 miles to the parking area.

This is the best parking area for accessing Erwin’s View Trail, Plunge Basin Overlook, and Dugger’s Creek Falls. Parking is free.

Old NC 105 Parking Area

The Linville Falls trails can also be accessed from the U.S. Forest Service gravel parking area on Old NC 105, also known as Kistler Memorial Highway. This provides another way to reach the trail system if your route makes it more convenient or Parkway access changes.

The gravel lot is smaller and has fewer facilities than the main paved parking area.

Restrooms and Other Facilities

Portable toilets are available near the paved parking area. There are no indoor restrooms, gift shop, or visitor center services. Do not count on drinking water being available, so bring enough water for your hike.

The Linville Falls campground and picnic area remain closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene. Conditions can change as repairs continue, so check the official Blue Ridge Parkway road status page before leaving home.

Linville Falls Hiking Trails

There are two main trail systems at Linville Falls, along with a short trail to Dugger’s Creek Falls. The right trail for you will depend on how much time you have, which view you want to see, and how comfortable you are with steep climbs and elevation changes.

Erwin’s View Trail is the best option for most first-time visitors. It leads to four overlooks and allows you to turn around whenever you are ready. Upper Falls is the shortest option, Chimney View provides one of the best views of the main waterfall, and Erwin’s View offers the widest view of Linville Falls and the gorge.

The Plunge Basin Trail is shorter but more strenuous, with steep sections and steps leading to a closer view of Lower Falls. The Linville Gorge Trail branches from this route and continues down to the river. The Linville Gorge Trail has officially reopened.

The distances below are approximate round-trip distances from the paved parking area.

Erwin's View Trail

Erwin’s View Trail is a moderate 1.6-mile round-trip hike that leads to four overlooks, each offering a different view of Linville Falls, the Linville River, and Linville Gorge. This is the most popular trail at Linville Falls and the best choice if you want to see the falls from several different angles.

The first part of the trail to Upper Falls is fairly easy, but the hike becomes steeper and more challenging as you continue toward Chimney View, Gorge View, and Erwin’s View. You do not have to complete the entire trail to enjoy it. You can visit one or two overlooks and turn around, or continue to the end for the widest view of the falls and gorge.

During our recent visit, the trail itself was clear and easy to follow. However, we saw numerous downed trees along both sides of the trail, which were visible reminders of the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. Overall, we were very impressed with the condition of the trail and how well it had been cleared, repaired, and maintained by park staff.

The full hike is well worth doing if you have the time and are comfortable with the elevation changes. Along the way, the trail passes through a beautiful wooded area and gives you everything from an up-close look at the river to wide views across Linville Gorge.

Upper Falls

Upper Falls is the first overlook along Erwin’s View Trail. This is the easiest section of the trail, with only a slight change in elevation. The trail follows the Linville River and crosses a bridge before continuing along a dirt path. Watch for a short side trail on the left that leads down to the Upper Falls viewing area.

From the overlook, you can watch the Linville River flow over two side-by-side cascades and into a pool. The river then narrows, rushes through a small rocky gorge, and continues toward the 45-foot drop of Lower Falls.

Swimming is not allowed at Upper Falls, and the fast-moving water and steep drop make this area extremely dangerous. Stay behind the retaining walls and never climb over them. A slip into the river here could be fatal.

Chimney View

After visiting Upper Falls, return to the main trail and continue toward Chimney View. The overlook is about 0.2 miles farther along the trail. This section passes through a beautiful forested area and becomes steeper as you climb, making it more challenging than the walk to Upper Falls.

Chimney View is the first overlook where you can clearly see the main drop of Linville Falls. From here, you can watch the Linville River flow through Upper Falls, narrow between the rocks, and then plunge into the large basin below. You will also have a wonderful view of the surrounding cliffs and the beginning of Linville Gorge.

The overlook gets its name from the chimney-shaped rock formations near the waterfall. It is one of the best places along the trail to photograph the falls because you can see both the upper and lower sections from the same viewpoint. The surrounding rock formations and forest also help to show the size and ruggedness of the gorge.

Take some time to enjoy this overlook before continuing. The view here is closer and more dramatic than the distant view from Erwin’s View, making Chimney View one of our favorite stops along the trail.

Gorge View

Gorge View is located between Chimney View and Erwin’s View. Unlike the other overlooks, the main attraction here is not the waterfall. This overlook looks downstream as the Linville River continues through the steep and rugged Linville Gorge.

It is a worthwhile stop because it gives you a better sense of the depth and size of the gorge. After enjoying the view, return to the main trail and continue a short distance to Erwin’s View, the final overlook along the trail.

Erwin's View

After visiting Gorge View, return to the main trail and continue a short distance to Erwin’s View, the final overlook along the trail. Once you have enjoyed the view, you will return to the parking area along the same trail.

Erwin’s View offers the widest and most expansive view of the Linville Falls area. From this higher vantage point, you can see both Upper Falls and the main waterfall in the distance, along with the Linville River winding through the rugged landscape. The view also stretches across Linville Gorge, giving you a much better sense of just how large and deep the gorge really is.

The waterfall is farther away here than it is at Chimney View, but the surrounding scenery makes this overlook well worth visiting. It is an especially beautiful view when the mountains are covered in spring green or fall color. A zoom lens (used in the above photo) can help if you want a closer photograph of the falls, while a wider lens is better for capturing the waterfall and gorge together.

Erwin’s View is a wonderful place to rest and enjoy the scenery before beginning the hike back. If you have made it this far, take your time. This is the broadest view along the trail and a fitting end to the hike.

Linville Gorge - Plunge Basin Trail

The trail leading toward Plunge Basin begins near the site of the former Linville Falls Visitor Center. After approximately 0.2 mile, the trail splits into two routes.

The right fork leads to Plunge Basin Overlook and is currently open. This strenuous, approximately one-mile round-trip hike includes steep sections, steps, rocky terrain, and noticeable elevation changes. The overlook provides a closer view of the lower falls and the surrounding rock formations.

The left fork is the Linville Gorge Trail, which descends to the Linville River near the base of the falls. This portion of the trail remains closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene. Do not enter the closed section or attempt to reach the river from this route.

We did not hike to Plunge Basin Overlook during our July 2026 visit, and it has been several years since we last explored these trails ourselves. Any older photos shown below are from those previous visits. Check the posted signs and the current National Park Service trail map before beginning your hike, since closures may change as repairs continue.

Dugger's Creek Falls

Dugger’s Creek Falls is a small waterfall located near the Linville Falls parking area. One quick pronunciation note: Dugger’s is pronounced “Doug-ers,” with “dug” sounding like the word in “I dug a hole.”

The trailhead is near the back corner of the parking area. Look for the small trail leading into the woods. The hike is short, but we would consider it moderate because of the uneven ground, rocks, roots, and current storm debris. The trail leads to a wooden bridge that crosses Dugger’s Creek and provides the easiest and best overall view of the falls.

During our July 2026 visit, this was where we saw some of the most visible damage from Hurricane Helene. Below the falls, near the parking area and road, the creek had been heavily washed out. So many trees were lost that you can now almost see Dugger’s Creek from the parking area. Before the storm, the creek was mostly hidden behind the trees and surrounding vegetation.

We also saw numerous fallen trees along the trail. The area below the bridge looked very different from our previous visits. It was much more open, with fallen trees, limbs, and other debris scattered through the creek. The storm dramatically changed the appearance of this once heavily wooded area.

The bridge provides a clear view of the waterfall and is the safest place for most visitors to enjoy and photograph it. In the past, photographers could get an exceptional view by carefully making their way below the bridge. That area is now much more difficult to reach because of the fallen trees and debris. Conditions may also be unstable, so do not climb over debris, leave the designated trail, or attempt to reach the creek if the route is closed or unsafe.

Although Dugger’s Creek Falls is much smaller than Linville Falls, it is still worth the short walk. The waterfall remains beautiful, but the surrounding landscape now offers a striking look at how much Hurricane Helene changed this area.

Tips for Visiting Linville Falls

A little planning can make your visit to Linville Falls safer and more enjoyable, especially while repairs from Hurricane Helene continue.

Check road and trail conditions before leaving. Portions of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Linville Falls recreation area may still be closed. Check the official Blue Ridge Parkway road status page for the latest information.
Arrive early if you can. Linville Falls is one of the most popular stops along the Parkway, and the parking area can fill quickly on weekends and during fall color season.
Prepare for changing mountain weather. Linville Falls can be cooler, wetter, and windier than nearby lower elevations. Check the forecast for the Linville Falls area, dress in layers, and bring a light rain jacket even if conditions are warm and sunny when you leave.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes. Erwin’s View Trail is well maintained, but it includes roots, rocks, steps, and steeper climbs beyond Upper Falls. Recent rain can also leave parts of the trail wet or muddy.
Bring water and anything else you may need. The former visitor center is gone, and you should not count on drinking water, food, maps, or other supplies being available.
Choose the overlooks that work for you. You do not have to hike the entire Erwin’s View Trail. Upper Falls is the easiest and quickest option. Chimney View requires more climbing, but we think it provides the best overall view of Linville Falls.
Allow enough time. Plan on about one to two hours for Erwin’s View Trail, depending on how many overlooks you visit and how long you spend enjoying the views and taking photos.
Stay behind all walls, railings, and barriers. The Linville River has a strong current, slippery rocks, and dangerous drops. Swimming and wading are not allowed, and getting too close to the water can be fatal.
Keep children close. Several overlooks have steep drop-offs, and Upper Falls is especially dangerous because of the fast-moving water.
Keep pets leashed. Dogs are allowed on the trails but must remain on a leash. Bring water for them and clean up after them.
Expect limited cell service. Download directions or save the parking coordinates before arriving, especially if you plan to approach the area using Old NC 105.
Leave No Trcace. Carry out all trash, remain on marked trails, and avoid climbing around fallen trees or entering closed areas.

Roaring Fork Falls is one of the most beautiful and easiest waterfalls to visit near Burnsville, North Carolina. Located in Pisgah National Forest near the base of Mount Mitchell, the waterfall is reached by an easy 1.4-mile round-trip hike along an old Forest Service road.

The trail climbs gradually through a shady mountain forest before ending at a long, narrow cascade surrounded by moss-covered rocks, rhododendrons, and enormous boulders. Instead of making one large vertical drop, Roaring Fork tumbles and slides through a series of smaller cascades, creating one of the prettiest waterfall settings we’ve encountered in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

It is also only a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, making it an excellent addition to a day spent exploring the Parkway, Mount Mitchell, or the Burnsville area.

2026 Updates

As of July 2026, Roaring Fork Falls Trail is open. The U.S. Forest Service reopened the trail in May 2025 after it had been closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene.

Nearby Setrock Creek Falls and Black Mountain Campground remain closed because of storm damage. Other roads and trails within the South Toe River area may also have closures or limited access. Follow all posted signs and gates, and check current U.S. Forest Service conditions before visiting other destinations in the area.

Why Hike to Roaring Fork Falls?

Roaring Fork Falls is an excellent choice for families, casual hikers, and anyone looking for an impressive waterfall without a long or difficult hike.

Most of the hike follows a wide gravel road through a heavily wooded section of Pisgah National Forest. The climb is gradual, the route is easy to follow, and there are no creek crossings or particularly steep sections.

The waterfall itself is what makes this hike special. Roaring Fork Falls flows through a narrow, rocky channel filled with moss, rhododendrons, and enormous granite boulders. The surrounding forest gives the falls a secluded and almost tropical appearance during the warmer months.

Water flow can vary considerably depending on recent rainfall. The falls is especially impressive following a period of steady rain, but the trail and rocks around the waterfall will also be wetter and more slippery.

Hiking to Roaring Fork Falls

The hike begins behind the gate across from the small parking area near the Busick Work Center. Look for the Roaring Fork Falls trail sign and follow the wide gravel road as it climbs gently into the forest.

Although this feels more like walking along an old road than a traditional hiking trail, the surrounding forest is beautiful. The tree canopy provides plenty of shade, making this a comfortable hike during the warmer months.

As you continue, Roaring Fork Creek will be below you on the left. You will often hear the water before you get a clear view of it through the trees.

Along the way, you’ll pass two unusual concrete structures beside the trail. These are old storage buildings that were once used to safely store explosives during construction work in the area. The doors have been removed, but the structures remain as an interesting reminder of the area’s past.

Continue following the road for approximately 0.6 mile. Near a small bridge, look for a trail branching off to the right. This final portion leaves the wide gravel road and follows a narrower path toward the waterfall.

The last stretch is short but contains more exposed roots, rocks, and potentially muddy areas. You’ll soon begin to hear the waterfall ahead before arriving at its base.

Roaring Fork Falls

Roaring Fork Falls is a long cascade rather than a single vertical drop. Published height estimates vary because some measurements refer to the vertical drop while others measure the full length of the sloping cascade.

The water travels down a narrow, zigzagging channel, flowing over dark rock ledges and around large boulders before reaching the creek below. Rhododendrons, moss, and thick forest surround the waterfall, creating a beautiful setting for photography.

There are several places near the base where you can sit, relax, and enjoy the falls. The immediate viewing area is relatively small, however, so it can feel crowded when several groups arrive at the same time.

Use extreme caution around the waterfall. The rocks are steep, wet, and often covered in moss. Do not attempt to climb alongside the falls or scramble toward the upper cascades. These rocks can be much more slippery than they appear.

While there is water at the base, Roaring Fork Falls is not what we would consider a true swimming hole. The area is generally shallow, rocky, and better suited for enjoying the scenery and cooling your feet.

You'll return the same way you arrived.

Tips for Visiting Roaring Fork Falls

Here are a few tips when visiting Roaring Fork Falls:

Parking at the trailhead is very limited. Arrive early during summer, fall, and on weekends. If the parking area is full, return later rather than parking along the narrow road or blocking the Forest Service gate.
Wear shoes with good traction (something a little better than Hey Dudes ...). The gravel road is easy to walk, but the final approach and the area around the falls can be muddy and slippery.
Bring water, even though this is a short hike. There are no facilities, water fountains, or restrooms at the trailhead.
Roaring Fork Falls is most impressive after recent rainfall, but avoid visiting during severe storms or periods of flooding.
Keep children close at the waterfall. The trail is family-friendly, but the slick rocks and steep terrain beside the cascade are not.
Pack out everything you bring with you and help keep this beautiful area clean. Always Leave No Trace.

Burnsville is our top recommendation for anyone visiting Roaring Fork Falls. Downtown Burnsville is about 30 minutes from the trailhead and provides convenient access to Pisgah National Forest, Mount Mitchell, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and other outdoor destinations in Yancey County.

Burnsville also has an excellent selection of locally owned restaurants, art galleries, shops, vacation rentals, inns, and historic accommodations.

We’ve personally stayed at both the historic NuWray Hotel and the Terrell House Bed and Breakfast. Each offers a comfortable stay within walking distance of downtown shops, restaurants, and the Burnsville Town Square.

There are many great places to grab a drink in the area, but we only recommend the ones we have actually spent time at ourselves. We have listed these in alphabetical order so you can easily find what you are looking for, rather than ranking them by preference. Each of these spots offers a different vibe and menu, so we honestly don't have a specific preference. It all depends on what you're looking for. They are all fantastic!

Oklawaha Brewing Company

Located just a block off Main Street, Oklawaha Brewing Company is a staple of the downtown scene. The name itself is a tribute to local history, named after the Oklawaha Creek that runs through downtown.

Owner Joe Dinan took over the brewery in 2020, bringing experience from heavy hitters like Goose Island and Wicked Weed. Joe’s focus has been on making Oklawaha a "community-first" hub, and you can really feel that when you walk in.

The beer program here is impressive because of its commitment to local ingredients. They source about 50% of their barley from River Bend Malthouse in Asheville, ensuring the beer has a true Western North Carolina flavor. They are best known for their German-style lagers and hop-forward IPAs.

When Jenn and I stopped in during one of our Hendersonville adventures, we really enjoyed the location and the live music. We heard from quite a few locals that this is their go-to hangout because the vibe is upbeat but still casual.

Oklawaha is very welcoming to families and even keeps board games, coloring books, and chalk on hand to keep the kids entertained. While the "Sunflower Kitchen" presence means dogs aren't allowed inside the taproom, they are warmly welcomed on the patio. They even keep dog bowls and treats behind the bar—just ask the bartender!

Packa's Place - The BARn

Located out in Horse Shoe, Packa's Place is a relatively new addition that has quickly become a community favorite. "The BARn" is their on-site beer garden, and the family behind it saw a real need for a space where the community could gather and enjoy the natural beauty of the Hendersonville area. It has a very relaxed, rural feel that makes it a great alternative to the busier downtown spots.

While they are a beer garden rather than a full-scale brewery, they pride themselves on a carefully curated selection of local craft brews, ciders, and seltzers. It’s a great place to sample several different Henderson County beers in one spot. They host rotating food trucks to provide a variety of dining options, but we always recommend checking their social media for the day's schedule. It is the kind of place where you can really slow down and appreciate the mountain scenery.

This location was designed specifically with families in mind. The BARn is an open-air space that allows kids to enjoy the outdoors while parents relax. It is also very dog-friendly, making it a popular weekend destination for locals who want to bring their pups along for some fresh air and a cold drink.

Southern Appalachian Brewery

Southern Appalachian was one of the first breweries to help build the craft beer scene here, opening its permanent Hendersonville home in 2011. Founded by husband-and-wife team Andy and Kelly Cubbin, the brewery actually started in Rosman back in 2003 before moving to the historic Seventh Avenue District. Being one of the "pioneers" in town, they’ve maintained a loyal local following for over a decade.

Their brewing philosophy centers on high-quality, small-batch ales. You’ll always find their staples like the Copperhead Amber Ale and the Black Bear Stout, which are known for being consistent, clean, and flavorful. We visited during our feature on the Winter Ramble when Darren Nicholson was performing. The brewery is small, but it feels intimate and friendly. The night we were there, it was standing room only because of the music!

This brewery is very family-oriented and dog-friendly. You will often see well-behaved dogs on leashes in their spacious outdoor courtyard. They also sell soda and bottled water for the under-21 crowd and non-drinkers, making it a comfortable spot for everyone to hang out while enjoying the rotating food trucks.

Trailside Brewing Co.

Trailside Brewing Co. is located in the Lennox Park area and is one of our personal favorites. The building itself is a piece of Hendersonville history—it was originally a hosiery mill built in 1915 and later served as the town’s first Lowe’s hardware store. Owners David and Colleen Schnitzer have done a beautiful job "breathing new life" into the old factory space, preserving the industrial character while making it a vibrant community hub.

The beer at Trailside is made with a lot of intention, focusing on clean, classic styles. They also have a fantastic cocktail program for those who might want something other than a pint. It is located right alongside the Ecusta Trail, making it a fantastic stop for food and a cold beer after you have been out walking or biking. We attended a fantastic craft show here during one of our visits and really enjoyed the layout.

Trailside is both pet and family-friendly, with plenty of room in their large indoor and outdoor seating areas. While they don't have playground equipment, it is a very common spot for families to bring a board game and hang out by the fire or enjoy the live music. It’s a great, low-stress environment for both kids and dogs.

Bonus: Jeter Mountain Farm - No Beer but fantastic Ciders

If you want to head out into the country, Jeter Mountain Farm is a spot we always enjoy, especially during the harvest season. This property has a deep history, with the Hunsader family bringing over 150 years of farming experience to these 400 acres. What started as an equestrian farm was transformed starting in 2005 into the massive orchard and destination it is today. You can still see the history in the architecture—the taproom and market are housed in beautifully renovated barns that once served as horse stalls and haylofts.

While they don't brew beer, they are famous for their small-batch hard ciders made from apples grown right on the property. Their cider-making process is truly "field to pint," with the juice pressed in their own on-site facility. They offer a range of flavors, often mixing their base cider with other fruits grown on the farm, like blackberries and grapes.

When Jenn and I visit, we usually head straight for the 1813 Smokehouse located inside the market. The pulled pork and brisket are excellent, and there is plenty of room to sit and enjoy the mountain air. It is a true farm experience that feels like a real getaway from the hustle of downtown.

This is one of the most kid-friendly spots in the county. They have a massive indoor playground area that is a huge hit with families. For your furry friends, pups are welcome on the farm grounds on a leash. However, keep in mind they aren't allowed in the orchards, on the wagons, or inside the buildings, so plan accordingly if you are bringing your dog along.

Hiking Devil’s Bathtub in Virginia: What to Expect

Devil’s Bathtub had been on our short list for years, long before we ever set foot on the trail. After seeing it pop up again and again in photos shared by members of our Blue Ridge Mountain Life Facebook group, it became one of those hikes we knew we eventually had to experience for ourselves.

In August 2024, we finally made the 2.5-hour drive to hike Devil’s Bathtub and see firsthand what all the buzz was about. We chose a warm summer day on purpose, knowing this is the kind of trail where creek crossings, shaded forest, and cold mountain water are part of the appeal. We spent the day hiking the trail, taking photos, and capturing video along the way to document the experience from start to finish.

This guide is based entirely on our own hike to Devil’s Bathtub along the roughly 4-mile out-and-back trail. Everything below reflects what we personally encountered on the trail, from the terrain and water crossings to what it’s really like reaching the bathtub at the end.

Arriving at Devil's Bathtub

Getting to the Devil’s Bathtub trailhead feels remote, especially toward the end. As you arrive, you'll note a very large parking area and a gorgeous greenish-blue swimming hole next to it. This is not the main parking area, but the overflow parking area. We highly recommend stopping here, as it makes for some beautiful photos. During the summer, this is a popular swimming hole as well, and there are rope swings.

To get to the main parking area, turn left onto the dirt road directly across from the parking area and head up towards the trailhead. This stretch of road is gravel and can be rough. While 4-wheel drive and high clearance aren’t required, it can be helpful depending on conditions. It was in pretty good condition during our visit.

Parking is the main lot is limited on busy days, and this hike has grown in popularity. During the summer and on weekends, arriving early in the day helps avoid crowded parking and heavier foot traffic on the trail.

If this lot is full, you'll need to park in the overflow parking area near the swimming hole. This adds 1-mile to the hike.

From the parking area, signage points you toward the Devil’s Fork Trail, which leads to Devil’s Bathtub. You'll head up a set of stairs, you can't miss it.

On the Trail: What to Expect

The hike starts with a climb up some stairs, and then a gradual descent from the parking area and quickly introduces you to the first of several creek crossings. Depending on recent rainfall, you may be able to rock-hop across some of them, but it’s common to get wet feet at least once. During our visit, we were able to rock hop all of the creeks, and never got wet. Your mileage may vary.

Much of the trail follows Devil’s Fork Creek, winding through a shaded hardwood forest. Expect exposed roots, rocky sections, and narrow footpaths that require steady footing. After rain, some sections can be slick, especially where water flows directly across the trail.

You will reach a split in the trail, where going left will take you on the shortest path to Devil's Bathtub, while going right will take you on the longer loop hike. We went left for the 4-mile round-trip out and back hike.

As you work your way deeper into the hike, the sound of rushing water stays with you almost the entire time. Even before reaching the bathtub, there are small cascades and pools along the creek that make this a scenic and enjoyable hike.

Near the end, the trail will go out onto the unique rock formations in this area, and you'll have to climb some rock to get up to the bathtub itself. The rock around the bathtub is smooth and can be slippery, so take your time and watch your footing.

The bathtub is a deep, circular basin carved into solid rock by centuries of moving water. On a hot summer day, the water is cold and incredibly refreshing, making it an ideal place to take a break before heading back out the way you came. The water has a unique greenish/blue hue that makes for some amazing photos with the right lighting.

We arrived at Devil's Bathtub around 4:30 in the afternoon on a summer evening. The lighting was not good. We suspect the best lighting for photos of the bathtub itself would be in the morning.

Tips for a Great Hike

After our amazing hike out to see the Devil's Bathtub, we learned a few tips that we think you'll find helpful:

Wear shoes with good grip and expect wet conditions. Creek crossings are unavoidable.
Bring plenty of water, especially in warmer months. The terrain makes this hike feel longer than the mileage suggests.
Start early if hiking in summer or on weekends to avoid crowds and limited parking. We hiked on a weekday and had the trail pretty much to ourselves.
Take your time near the bathtub. Wet rock and smooth stone can be slick.
Pack out everything you bring in to help keep this area clean and enjoyable for others.
If you plan to swim, bringing a small towel and a change of clothes makes the hike back more comfortable.
Check the weather and come prepared. There were storms in the area the day or our hike, but a low chance of rain. Of course, it rained right where we were hiking and we got soaked (see our video). We recommend having a spare set of clothing in your vehicle, just in case.

Our Take

This hike ended up being one of those adventures that reminded us why certain places stay on our list for so long. Hiking Devil’s Bathtub in August turned it into a true summer adventure. The heat made the shaded forest and creek crossings especially welcome, and the cold water at the end felt like a well-earned reward.

We loved that this hike felt a little rugged without being overwhelming. The constant sound of water, the repeated crossings, and the final approach to the bathtub made it feel more immersive than many hikes of similar length. It’s not a trail you rush through, and that’s part of what makes it special.

Devil’s Bathtub isn’t a beginner hike, and it’s not one we’d recommend taking lightly. But if you’re comfortable with uneven terrain, wet conditions, and a bit of effort, it delivers a memorable payoff. For us, it absolutely lived up to the photos we’d seen for years, and it’s a hike we’re glad we finally made the time to experience.

Jenn and I have spent countless hours on the beautiful campus of Haywood Community College (HCC) over the years. From capturing family photos and watching our kids head off to proms, to seeing our own children attend classes here, the campus has always been a familiar backdrop in our lives. However, despite our long history with the school, we had never actually hiked the Dahlia Ridge Trail System, specifically the recent additions, until this past week.

We found these trails to be a fantastic addition to the local hiking scene here in Haywood County. What makes the system of trails truly special is that it feels like a deep-woods escape while remaining just minutes away from downtown Waynesville and Clyde.

Whether you are looking for a quick nature break or a rugged wooded loop, these trails offer a surprising variety of terrain right in our backyard.

What you need to know
Location: Haywood Community College is located in Clyde, NC, just minutes from downtown Waynesville, NC.
Handicap Accessible: While the main campus, Bobcat Trail and the paths surrounding the Mill Pond are paved or flat gravel and mostly accessible, the wooded sections like Copperhead and Kingfisher are natural surface trails and are not wheelchair accessible.
Dog Friendly: Yes (Must remain on a leash).

In our video, we take you along our walk through the Dahlia Ridge Trail System so you can see what it’s actually like on the ground, including the Mill Pond area and some of the quieter wooded sections. We hike a whole loop around and though the HCC campus.

Hit play to hike it with us, get a feel for the terrain and trail vibe, and decide which loops you want to tackle when you go. If you’re local, it’s a great “quick outdoor fix” spot when you don’t have time for a longer drive or bigger hike.

Getting to the Dahlia Ridge Trails

Located in Clyde, NC, the Dahlia Ridge Trail System is incredibly easy to access, but because it is located on an active college campus, knowing exactly where to park is key.

Where to Park:There are two primary ways to access the trail system depending on which section you want to tackle first:

Primary Parking (Main Entrance): As you enter the main HCC campus on Sawmill Drive, take your very first left into the parking lot. This is a central spot that puts you in close proximity to the main trail kiosks and the campus's famous Mill Pond.
Secondary Parking: For a slightly different approach, you can continue past Sawmill Drive on Jones Cove Road and turn left onto Armory Drive. There is a smaller parking area on the far side of the Mill Pond that offers a quick connection to the trail network.

Any white-marked parking spot is open to the public. Do not park in yellow, blue, or purple spaces.

Finding the Trailhead: Once you park at the main lot on Sawmill Drive, look for the large wooden trail kiosks near the Hemlock building. These provide a full map of the system. The trails are well-marked with color-coded blazes, but we recommend snapping a photo of the map before you head into the more wooded sections.

Restrooms: Public restrooms are located at the Ironwood facility, near the millpond and smaller parking area. Addtionally, HCC building restrooms are open to the public during school hours. This does not apply to HEC (Haywood Early College).

Know Before You Go

While the Dahlia Ridge Trail System is located on the Haywood Community College campus, the college graciously keeps these trails open to the public. It is a wonderful community resource, but do keep in mind that since it is a school, you'll want to be mindful of students and campus activities.

The trails are also pet-friendly, provided your four-legged hiking partners stay on a leash. It’s a perfect spot for a local dog walk that feels a bit more adventurous than a standard sidewalk stroll.

Hiking the Dahlia Ridge Loop: Our Experience

While you can jump on the trail system from several points on campus, Jenn and I started at the official starting point near the Hemlock Building and the Mill Pond. We began by walking around the Mill Pond—which is easily the highlight and most scenic attraction of the entire system—before catching the Mill Pond Connector. You’ll find this near the small parking area by the Ironwood facility.

From there, the trail transitions from a casual stroll to a true hike. You’ll cross the road and a small bridge, heading straight into the woods. We followed the winding Copperhead Trail, which features a series of switchbacks. This was the only section where we experienced a real workout with some elevation gain, though we would still categorize the overall hike as easy to moderate.

The Copperhead Trail eventually feeds into the Kingfisher Trail. This section feels like a deep-woods escape, with natural paths that can be a bit muddy after a rain. Finally, we connected to the Bobcat Trail, the main campus loop, which transitioned back into paved sidewalks and flat gravel as we headed back toward the parking area. Our total loop was about 1.5 miles.

The variety of the terrain is what makes this loop so engaging. In one afternoon, we experienced:

The Scenery: The Mill Pond is incredibly peaceful and a must-see for photographers.
The Art: As you loop through the main campus, keep your eyes peeled for the unique art installations. We especially enjoyed the wireframe bobcat and the resonating bell.
The Terrain: It’s rare to find a trail that seamlessly blends flat gravel, rugged forest floor, and paved campus walkways.

Tips for a Great Hike

Here are a few tips we learned during our visit and hike that will help make your visit more enjoyable:

Footwear: Special hiking gear isn't strictly needed for the campus sections, but if you're planning on hiking the more remote areas like Copperhead or Kingfisher, good hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended as these natural trails can be muddy.
Water: We recommend bringing some water along, especially for the wooded switchback sections.
Navigation: The trails are well-marked, but we still recommend downloading the hiking trails map to your phone for easy reference.
Safety: For safety, there are emergency response markers all through the trail with unique codes. In the event of an emergency, these allow first responders to accurately locate you in the woods.
Leave No Trace: The trails are open to the public, so please always practice the principles of Leave No Trace, so locals and visitors can continue to enjoy these fantastic trails.

Our Take

Jenn and I really enjoyed our time on the Dahlia Ridge trails. To be fair, these trails aren't as remote or rugged as some mountain hikes, like you would find in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

You also won't find a significant point of interest like a breathtaking waterfall. BUT, they are a great option for local hiking, walking and running. Much like the popular trails at Lake Junaluska.

It is definitely worth the short drive from Waynesville. It is a great way to get outdoors, enjoy some local art, and get some exercise in a beautiful, quiet setting.

They serve excellent coffee along with a selection of fresh baked breakfast items, all made with care and perfect for a quick but satisfying start to the morning. Jenn and I have stopped in a few times now, and we’ve really enjoyed both the drinks and the food—simple, fresh, and really well done.

The cafe offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and parking is easy, which makes it a convenient stop whether you’re staying local or passing through. With its friendly vibe, great coffee, and prime location, Blue Ghost Outpost is a fantastic addition to Waynesville’s growing coffee community.

Dillsboro Chocolate Factory

Christmas at Biltmore is one of those holiday traditions that never seems to lose its magic — and we say that as locals who live nearby and have been visiting the estate for years.

We’ve seen Biltmore in every season, but there’s just something about Christmas at Biltmore that feels extra special. I mean afterall, it did open on Christmas Eve in 1895. That moment you step inside the house and see the towering Banquet Hall tree lit up, the detailed ornaments, and the warm glow from the fireplaces, it hits you all over again why this place is such a holiday favorite.

Even after years of visiting, we still catch ourselves slowing down in each room just to take in the details. The estate’s design team puts a huge amount of work into their themes every year, and it shows. Every tree, every ribbon, and every arrangement has a story or inspiration behind it, and seeing those touches up close is part of what keeps us coming back. Getting to Biltmore, Parking, and Shuttles

Biltmore Shuttle at Candlelight Christmas

Biltmore is easy to reach, but Christmas crowds make planning important. Most guests enter through the main gate in Biltmore Village. From there, it takes about 10–20 minutes to reach the parking areas depending on traffic.

For Biltmore House, most visitors park in the general lots and either walk to the house or take a shuttle. Lots A and B are park and walk and are closest to the house. Lots C (for RVs) and E (Accessible) and offer shuttle service to the house.

Shuttles run continuously, but lines can form on busy days, so arriving early helps everything feel more relaxed.

Antler Hill Village has its own parking lot and generally doesn’t require a shuttle. You can also take a shuttle to Biltmore Gardens from the house.

Arriving early is the best strategy — you’ll avoid the feeling of rushing to your tour time and can enjoy the grounds before or after your house visit. We stress this, as we got delayed at dinner and on the shuttle one evening for a Christmas house tour, and missed our time and were denied entry due to Candlelight Christmas starting.

What to Expect Inside Biltmore House at Christmas During the Daytime Tour

Walking into Biltmore House at Christmas never gets old. The Banquet Hall, with its towering Fraser fir, sets the tone for the entire tour. Each room has its own theme and style, and the décor team puts an incredible amount of detail into every ornament, ribbon, and arrangement.

Favorites always include the Winter Garden, the Library, and the grand staircase wrapped with garland, and of course The Banquet Hall. Some rooms stick with traditional red-and-green themes, while others lean into rich jewel tones or unexpected color palettes. The design changes every year, and even after countless visits, we always notice something new, and it's always beautiful.

Jenn and I both agree that the library is our favorite room at Christmas.

What to Expect Inside Biltmore House at Christmas During the Daytime Tour

We visited Candlelight Christmas at Biltmore last night for the first time, and it was an experience we won’t forget anytime soon. The moment you come around the corner and see the house glowing in the darkness — the massive Christmas tree lit up on the front lawn, the luminaries lining the walkway — it quite literally feels like stepping back in time. For a moment, you can almost imagine what it must have been like on Christmas Eve in 1895, the night Biltmore first opened its doors.

Because Candlelight is so popular, there are definitely more people than you’ll see during the daytime tour. We had a pretty long line when we arrived, but it moved quickly and smoothly. Once inside, the mood shifts entirely compared to the daytime experience. The décor is almost identical, but the atmosphere is completely different. Instead of bright natural light, the entire house glows softly. Christmas trees sparkle a little brighter, ornaments catch the warm light, and the rooms feel cozier and more intimate.

During the day, the house is fairly quiet. But in the evening, you’re greeted with live musicians and choirs performing Christmas music throughout the house. Combined with the lights, the history, and the acoustics of the rooms, the whole experience comes together in a way that feels surprisingly emotional — a kind of Christmas magic that Biltmore does incredibly well. At times, we almost felt like we were guests in the Vanderbilt home, celebrating alongside George, his family, and their friends during that first holiday season.

Was it worth the money? Absolutely. It’s a special experience and one we’re really glad we did. It’s not something we would pay for every single year, but it’s definitely something everyone should see at least once. Biltmore goes above and beyond to make Candlelight Christmas feel authentic, warm, and unforgettable — and it truly was a night to remember.

Dining at Biltmore During the Holidays

Dining fills up fast during Christmas, so planning ahead is important.

For quick meals or snacks, the cafés and bakery near Biltmore House work well. Antler Hill Village also has several casual options.

For a sit-down meal:

Stable Cafe — food and a casual atmosphere next to the house. Makes for a convenient stop when visiting the house.
Cedric’s Tavern feels especially cozy during December. Often very busy and requires advanced reservations.
The Bistro - an upscale restaurant that focuses on estate-raised and regionally sourced ingredients in a vibrant, casual setting with a European flair.
The Dining Room at The Inn is a 4-star fine-dining choice for a more elevated holiday experience. Casual Elegant/Cocktail dress is required.

Reservations are strongly recommended, especially on Candlelight evenings and during Christmas week.

Christmas at Biltmore with Kids

Biltmore at Christmas is very kid-friendly, but pacing is key based on our experience with our kids when they were younger. The house is engaging for kids thanks to the huge trees, sparkling lights, and impressive rooms, but the tour can feel long for younger visitors.

Daytime visits work best for families. After your house tour, Antler Hill Village gives kids room to explore and enjoy the lights.

Strollers are welcome, and the estate is easy to navigate with them. Elevators are available for the house tour if needed.

Accessibility & Mobility Tips

Biltmore does a good job supporting guests with mobility needs. Elevators allow access to most of the house, and wheelchairs are available in limited supply.

Accessible parking and shuttles reduce the walking distance to the house. Weekday mornings offer the easiest navigation through the rooms.

Antler Hill Village is mostly flat and easy to move through, and the gardens and Conservatory are accessible with some gentle hills.

Planning extra time at each step — parking, shuttles, and the house — makes the visit smoother and more comfortable.

Photography Tips for Christmas at Biltmore

Whether you’re using a phone or a camera, Christmas is one of the best times to photograph Biltmore.

Small cameras and lenses are allowed for personal use, but no flash, microphones or tripods inside the house. Please contact the Biltmore for their photography policy and commercial use.

Raise ISO when needed — grain is better than blur, and grain is easily fixed during post editing.

Bring a CPL (Circular Polarizing Filter) for better sunset photos, outdoor photos, and to cut light glare of interior floors.

We live here in Waynesville, and every year, our family picks out our tree from one of the local farms. It’s one of our favorite holiday traditions, and it’s easy to see why so many people make the trip to the mountains each Christmas season.

The Waynesville area is one of the best places in Western North Carolina to find that perfect tree, thanks to its rich mountain soil and long family traditions of tree farming. It’s a simple, no-frills experience in the best possible way — quiet, authentic, and centered on the joy of finding the perfect tree. They also serve hot chocolate and hot cider, which is wonderful on a cold day!

A true local favorite, WNC Landscaping and Christmas Trees has been helping families find their perfect holiday tree for decades. Their farms, located on Hemphill Road and Jonathan Creek Road, are surrounded by stunning mountain views that make the experience extra special.

Visitors can wander through rows of fragrant Fraser firs, ranging from small tabletop trees to towering 12-foot beauties. You can cut your own tree or choose a fresh pre-cut one — either way, the staff is always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading. Besides trees, they often have handmade wreaths, garlands, and greenery for sale.

Boyd Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 445 Boyd Farm Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

If there is one Haywood County tree farm that truly captures the magic of Christmas in the North Carolina mountains, it is Boyd Mountain. This century-old family farm is a beloved local tradition, drawing visitors from all over the Southeast each holiday season, and for good reason.

When we visited this year (2025), they had just opened for the season, and the excitement was already in the air. The farm is beautifully decorated and offers so much more than just trees. There are numerous photo ops, plenty of fresh wreaths, stands, and Christmas decorating options, and even a food truck serving up tasty treats. We also found Santa greeting visitors and taking photos with families, which made it especially fun for the kids.

We met owner David Boyd, who welcomed us warmly and shared a little about the farm. We hopped on a wagon ride up to the top of the property, and the views were absolutely incredible. The hills are covered with rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs, and there are trees as far as you can see.

Boyd Mountain offers more than Christmas trees. It offers a full Christmas experience that brings families back year after year. Everywhere we looked, people were smiling, taking photos, and enjoying the mountain atmosphere. We had a wonderful time ourselves, and it is easy to see why this farm has become such a cherished holiday destination in Western North Carolina.

Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm

Opening: Pre-Tagging Beginning November 1. Schedule a time to pick up your tree then. They expect to sell out with pre tagging.

Tucked away in the scenic Dutch Cove community near Canton, this family-run farm has become a quiet favorite for those who love a relaxed, down-home Christmas tree experience. The drive to Dutch Cove is beautiful, winding through peaceful mountain countryside that already feels like a step back in time.

The farm specializes in premium Fraser firs grown right on-site, and you’ll find a wide range of sizes and shapes — ideal for families decorating cozy cabins or larger homes. The owners are incredibly welcoming and often take time to help visitors find exactly what they’re looking for.

Along with trees, Dutch Cove Christmas Tree Farm also sells handmade wreaths and garlands, making it a great one-stop shop for your holiday greenery.

Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm

Address: 756 Hemphill Road, Waynesville (Jonathan Creek area)

Opening: November 22, Monday – Thursday 10am-4pm and Friday – Sunday 9am-5pm

Located in the beautiful Jonathan Creek area just outside Maggie Valley, Smoky Mountain Christmas Tree Farm offers one of the most scenic and peaceful spots in Haywood County to find your Christmas tree. The farm is surrounded by rolling hills, open meadows, and mountain views that make the experience feel straight out of a holiday postcard.

Visitors can stroll through rows of perfectly shaped Fraser firs and take their time finding the right one — whether you prefer to cut your own or choose from a selection of freshly pre-cut trees. The owners are friendly and welcoming, always ready to help with cutting, wrapping, and loading your tree for the trip home.

One of the most photographed landmarks here is their beautiful red barn painted with the classic 7-Up logo — a bright splash of color against the green trees and mountain backdrop. It’s a favorite photo spot for families, and it adds a touch of nostalgic charm to the whole experience.

Nesbitt Tree Farm

Address: 333 Sunset Ridge Road, Clyde, NC

When: Now Open for 2025

A short drive from downtown Waynesville, Nesbitt Tree Farm is another great local gem. The farm is easy to access and offers high-quality Fraser firs that are carefully trimmed and maintained.

The Nesbitt family has been growing Christmas trees for many years, and their experience shows — every tree seems perfectly shaped and fragrant. They also sell fresh wreaths and garlands, often made right there on the farm.

It’s a wonderful option if you’re looking for a less crowded, laid-back place to pick your tree while still getting that authentic mountain farm feel.

Rock Cottage Farm Christmas Trees

Located just outside Canton, Rock Cottage Farm is a wonderful family-owned and operated farm offering pre-cut Fraser firs at budget-friendly prices. While they don’t offer choose-and-cut, they make up for it with a warm, festive atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile.

Visitors can pick out a beautiful, freshly cut Fraser fir and then spend some time exploring the Christmas Barn, filled with handmade gifts, ornaments, and crafts all created by the family. You can sip on hot chocolate, enjoy fresh popcorn, and even get your face painted — a big hit with kids and the young at heart.

There’s also a cozy fire to warm up by, and friendly animals around the farm to visit — including a sweet, gentle donkey who quickly became one of our favorites.

We really enjoyed our visit here and meeting the wonderful family behind Rock Cottage Farm. It’s a heartwarming reminder that the spirit of Christmas is alive and well here in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Plan Your Visit

Most Christmas tree farms near Waynesville open around Thanksgiving and stay open through mid-December. Hours and availability can vary depending on weather and demand, so it’s always a good idea to check each farm’s website or Facebook page before heading out.

Bring warm clothes, gloves, and boots — the fields can be muddy, especially after a mountain rain. Most farms cut your tree for you and will strap it to your car for you.

Many farms also have farm stands selling wreaths, garlands, and local goods, so bring some cash just in case.

Tips for Finding, Picking, and Bringing Your Tree Home

1. Choose the right size for your space.
Before heading out, measure the height of your ceiling and remember to leave room for your tree stand and topper. Many people overestimate how tall their room is — and end up trimming several feet off once they get home!

2. Look for color and shape.
A healthy Fraser fir should have rich green needles, a pleasant scent, and a strong, even shape. Walk around your tree to check all sides — especially if it will be placed in a central spot.

3. Test for freshness.
Gently tug on a few branches or tap the tree on the ground. If only a few needles fall, it’s fresh. Fraser firs are known for holding their needles well, so this test should give you confidence in your pick.

4. Ask about shaking and baling.
Most local farms will shake loose needles out of your tree and wrap it in netting to make it easier to transport. This simple step helps keep your car and home cleaner.

5. Give it a fresh cut at home.
Once you’re home, trim about an inch off the bottom before placing your tree in water. This allows it to absorb water more easily and stay fresh longer.

6. Keep it hydrated.
Check the water level daily — trees can drink a surprising amount, especially during the first few days indoors. Never let the base dry out, or the trunk will seal and stop taking in water.

7. Enjoy the moment.
Make a day of it — bring a thermos of hot chocolate, take photos, and enjoy the mountain scenery. Picking your own Christmas tree is about the experience as much as the tree itself.
