Grab Coffee at Talia Espresso

Our first stop when we arrived in North Wilkesboro was at Talia Espresso in downtown, and it was a great way to kick off our visit. The cafe has a warm, welcoming vibe, with plenty of tables and comfy places to relax, enjoy some coffee and food, or get some work done. We really liked that they have both indoor and outdoor seating as well.

We ordered some coffees (a honey, lavender latte and a salted caramel pumpkin spice latte), and some food as well, since it was lunch time. Sitting with our coffee, we noticed a steady stream of locals stopping in, chatting with the staff, and catching up with friends. It’s clear that Talia’s is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a community hub.

It set the tone for the rest of our trip — a relaxed, small-town charm paired with genuinely good food and drink. If you’re spending time in downtown Wilkesboro, Talia Espresso is a must-stop for your morning caffeine fix.

Roaring River Vineyards and Restaurant

One of the most memorable stops during our visit to Wilkes County was Roaring River Vineyards. Located along the river, this vineyard is as much about the setting and experience as it is about the wine — and we loved every part of it.

We started with lunch at the restaurant, and it was fantastic. The highlight was a massive charcuterie board, loaded with meats, cheeses, fruits, and accompaniments that paired beautifully with their wines. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. We highly recommend grabbing a table outside if the weather is nice — there’s nothing quite like enjoying good food and wine while listening to the river rushing by just a few feet away.

During our visit, we had the chance to meet Tom Silvey, the owner, who shared the story of how Roaring River Vineyards came to be. His vision was to create a unique vineyard and winery right on the river, a place where people could relax, celebrate, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Tom graciously showed us around the property, including their rental homes, multi-purpose space for weddings and events, and even their campground. We also toured the vineyards themselves, which added an extra layer of appreciation when sipping their wines.

Roaring River Vineyards is located in Traphill, about 25 minutes from Wilkesboro. The winery and restaurant are generally open Thursday through Sunday, but hours can vary seasonally, so it’s best to check their website before visiting. Reservations are recommended for the restaurant, especially if you want outdoor seating by the river.

The Lost Wombat

We stopped at The Lost Wombat during the our food tour and were immediately drawn in by its fun Aussie vibe and creative menu. We tried their Aussie Burger — a true Australian classic “with the lot.” It came piled high with a 7oz rissole patty, cheese, fried egg, bacon, pineapple ring, tomato, lettuce, fried onion, pickled beet slices, and BBQ sauce, all served with crispy fries. It was every bit as good as it sounds.

To go with it, we had a refreshing Moonshine Lemonade, which paired perfectly with the meal. While there, we met the owner — who also owns the Liberty Theater — and he told us all about the food and their signature Kangaroo Burger (yes, made with real kangaroo meat). You can tell he takes a lot of pride in what they’re doing here.

The Lost Wombat has something for everyone — great food and drinks, a family-friendly “yard” next door, and an adults-only tavern upstairs. 

Cinder Bistro

As part of the Blue Ridge Food Tour, we stopped into Cinder Bistro and were treated to an incredible sample of their barbecue — pulled smoked chicken, pulled pork, and brisket — along with some perfectly seasoned collard greens. Every bite was melt-in-your-mouth good. We’ve had a lot of BBQ during our travels, and Cinder Bistro easily ranks in our top favorites.

They also served us a fresh blackberry dessert created by the chef that looked as good as it tasted — the perfect sweet finish to the meal. To go with everything, we sampled a flight of local beers, which paired perfectly with the smoky flavors.

We had a chance to meet the owners, who were as warm and welcoming as the food was delicious. Their passion for great food and excellent customer service really shows in every detail.

Cagney’s Kitchen of Wilkesboro

We started one morning with breakfast at Cagney’s Kitchen, a popular local favorite known for its hearty Southern comfort food. Jenn went healthy with eggs, turkey bacon, and fresh fruit, while I went all in with corned beef hash and eggs, biscuits and gravy, and crispy hashbrowns — all washed down with plenty of hot coffee.

The food was really good, the portions generous, and our server was super friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is casual, family-friendly, and comfortable — the kind of place where you can relax and enjoy a good meal without any fuss.

We’d definitely eat at Cagney’s again next time we’re in town.

6th and Main

We visited 6th and Main as part of the food tour we did and immediately understood why it’s considered the nicest restaurant in town. While we wouldn’t call it “fine dining,” it definitely has a more upscale feel, with a cozy, inviting atmosphere and a full bar.

During our visit, we sat in the bar area and enjoyed a sample of their spicy pecan-encrusted chicken served with mashed potatoes, along with a glass of both red and white wine. The chicken was fantastic — tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked.

We had planned to come back for a full meal the next night, but the restaurant was closed for the weekend. It’s definitely on our short list for our next trip to Wilkesboro, and exactly the kind of restaurant we love — comfortable, welcoming, and a touch upscale.

Glenn’s

We stopped in at Glenn’s restaurant for breakfast, a longtime local spot near the Tyson processing plant that’s been serving Wilkes County for decades. Glenn’s is known as a gathering place for locals — the kind of restaurant where everyone seems to know each other, and the coffee never stops pouring.

The menu features classic country-style comfort food, with simple and familiar dishes like biscuits and gravy, eggs, and sausage.

It wasn’t quite our favorite meal of the trip, but we can appreciate its history, down-home charm, and the loyal crowd of regulars who clearly love starting their day here.

Moravian Falls Grill

We stopped at Moravian Falls Grill for lunch on our way back from visiting Perry Lowe Orchards. I ordered the chicken quesadilla special with fries, while Jenn went for the popcorn chicken and fries.

In addition to their regular menu, they offer daily specials like beef tips with gravy and a variety of Southern sides — fried potatoes and onions, green beans, pinto beans, and more. They even had peach cobbler for dessert.

The restaurant is small and cozy, with a focus on simple Southern comfort food. It’s clearly a local favorite and a convenient spot to grab a hearty meal when visiting Moravian Falls or the orchard nearby. The food was good, the service friendly, and it definitely has that home-cooked, small-town feel.

Dom Bakeries

Dom Bakeries was our first stop on the Blue Ridge Food Tours, and it was a great way to kick things off. We sampled their cheese pizza and an apple cider donut — both simple but delicious. The pizza had that classic New York–style flavor, and the donut was soft, sweet, and full of fall flavor.

The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is very casual — the kind of place you can pop into for a quick bite, a coffee, or a treat to go. It’s a solid local spot for anyone craving something fresh and homemade in Wilkesboro.

Amalfi’s Italian Restaurant

We had dinner at Amalfi’s one evening and found the place packed with customers — always a good sign. We started with glasses of wine and an order of cheese sticks before moving on to our entrees. I had the Salmon Mediterraneo, and Jenn went with the Chicken Parmesan. Both dishes were delicious, generously portioned, and full of flavor.

Our server was friendly and attentive, and we even had a nice chat with the owner during our meal. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly, and the value is hard to beat — the portions are huge for the price. We were too full for dessert, but it’s definitely on our list for next time.

Scrambled in Downtown Roanoke

Scrambled in downtown Roanoke turned out to be the perfect way to start our day. I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon and a hearty plate of biscuits and gravy, while Jenn went with scrambled eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit. Both of us enjoyed its rich, smooth coffee, which paired perfectly with breakfast on a rainy morning.

We sat outside on their covered patio, and even with the light rain, it was a cozy and relaxing spot to enjoy our meal. The service really stood out — friendly, attentive, and quick to make sure we had everything we needed. The food itself was excellent, especially the gravy on the biscuits. Their unique blend of black pepper and sage gave it a flavor that set it apart from other versions we’ve tried. Jenn’s fruit was also impressively fresh.

Scrambled is right in the heart of downtown Roanoke, and it’s exactly the kind of place we love to find when traveling — casual, welcoming, and serving up delicious comfort food with a local touch.

Food Hut RKE

Food Hut RKE is one of those hidden local gems that you almost stumble upon — and we discovered it during our Brews and Views e-bike tour.

While Jenn and I didn’t have time to order food ourselves, the couple riding with us did, and we quickly realized why this spot has such a strong reputation. He ordered their popular chicken sandwich, which is made with locally sourced chicken that’s brined in sweet tea. It smelled incredible, looked even better, and he said without hesitation it was one of the best chicken sandwiches he’s ever had.

We did get to sample their Zing Fries, and wow — these crispy fries are topped with house-made garlic butter, a zingy aioli, fresh parsley, and chives. They were hot, fresh, and packed with flavor, easily some of the best loaded fries we’ve tried anywhere.

Food Hut RKE is located inside Golden Cactus Brewing, which makes the experience even better. You can grab a craft beer, settle in at one of the big tables, and enjoy a casual, laid-back atmosphere surrounded by western-themed décor, pinball machines, and video games.

We ran out of time to come back and try more of their food during this trip, but it’s firmly at the top of our list for our next Roanoke visit.

Taaza Indian Cuisine

Taaza Indian Cuisine in Grandin Village had been recommended to us by our Brews and Views guide, and as big fans of Indian food, we couldn’t wait to try it. 

The restaurant was busy when we arrived, but we were seated right away at a high-top table in the back corner — our preferred spot. We started the evening with a glass of wine and an appetizer of roasted pappad served with mint and tamarind chutney. The pappad was crisp and flavorful, and both chutneys were excellent — fresh, tangy, and the perfect way to kick off the meal.

For our entrées, I ordered Saag Paneer with rice, and Jenn went with the classic Chicken Tikka Masala. Both dishes were served in very generous portions — so much that we couldn’t even finish them. The flavors were bold and delicious. We had asked for no spice, but the dishes still carried a bit of heat, just enough to enhance the flavor without overwhelming the meal. Everything tasted fresh and carefully prepared, and it was some of the best Indian food we’ve enjoyed anywhere in the Blue Ridge.

Taaza has a casual yet refined atmosphere with darker décor and lighting that gives it a cozy feel. Most guests were dressed casually, though some had dressed up a bit for dinner.

Parking in Grandin Village can be a little tricky — free spaces were all taken, but we easily found a spot in the pay lot right behind the restaurant. It only cost a couple of dollars for two hours, which was no issue at all.

Between the attentive service, the fantastic flavors, and the portion sizes, Taaza definitely ranks high on our list of Indian restaurants and is a must-visit when in Roanoke.

Breakfast buffet at the Hotel Roanoke

One of the unexpected highlights of our stay at The Hotel Roanoke was their incredible breakfast buffet. This spread is huge and covers just about every breakfast favorite you could imagine — scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, hashbrowns, grits, sticky buns, pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, and cereals. On top of that, they offer made-to-order omelets, along with fresh juices, hot coffee, and tea.

Jenn and I both went for omelets, paired with a mix of sides including bacon, fresh fruit, and crispy hashbrowns. Everything we tried was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the whole experience felt relaxed and enjoyable.

The dining room itself has a more formal look and feel, with classic décor that matches the historic charm of the hotel, but casual dress is perfectly acceptable. If you’re staying at The Hotel Roanoke, the breakfast buffet is not only convenient but absolutely worth taking advantage of. It’s a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring Roanoke.

Mrs B's in Buchannon Virginia

After our kayaking trip in Buchanan with Twin River Outfitters, we worked up quite an appetite. Locals — and Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge — both pointed us toward Mrs. B’s Restaurant, conveniently located right across the street. We grabbed a table out on the deck and settled in for a relaxing lunch.

To start, we ordered a couple of their seasonal strawberry drinks: a strawberry mojito and a strawberry margarita. Both were refreshing and the perfect way to cool off after being out on the river. For an appetizer, we tried the house-made pork rinds with pimento cheese. The rinds were made to order, arriving at the table hot and still crackling, and the pimento cheese was outstanding — creamy, with just the right amount of spice.

For lunch, I chose the strawberry and candied nut salad with honey bacon dressing, while Jenn went with the Italian sandwich. Both dishes were fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly elevated for such a small-town spot.

The casual atmosphere, friendly service, and the number of locals dining there made it feel like a true community hub. Mrs. B’s impressed us as one of the better small-town restaurants we’ve come across in our travels — a place we’d happily return to.

The Pine Room Bar at the Hotel Roanoke

The Pine Room restaurant in the Hotel Roanoke itself was closed for a private event the evening we planned to dine there, so we headed to the hotel’s bar instead. The food still came straight from The Pine Room kitchen, and it turned out to be a great choice.

We started with the Hearth Fired Bread, served with garlic oil, parsley, and marinara. It was essentially pizza dough, but light, airy, and absolutely delicious.

For dinner, Jenn ordered the Summer Berry Salad, while I went with a Caesar Salad topped with shrimp. We decided to keep things on the lighter side that night, but the menu offered plenty of tempting options — from flatbread pizzas and jerk chicken to a bone-in ribeye and their Smokehouse and smash burgers.

The bar itself is gorgeous, tucked just off the main entry and lobby. It was lively and busy each night of our stay, in part due to wedding events happening at the hotel. The bartenders were fantastic — friendly, attentive, and clearly skilled. The mixologist in particular was impressive, crafting unique cocktails that kept guests coming back for more.

Sweet Donkey Coffee

Sweet Donkey Coffee is a beautiful old home that’s been transformed into one of Roanoke’s most popular coffee shops, and it didn’t take us long to see why. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a casual, friendly vibe that makes it just as comfortable for hanging out as it is for grabbing a quick to-go order.

When we stopped by on a Sunday morning, the place was bustling with customers, both inside and out, but the service was still quick and cheerful.

The coffee here is excellent, with lots of unique house-made flavors. Jenn and I tried a lavender latte and a maple latte, and both were smooth, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. To go with our drinks, we enjoyed one of their in-house yogurt parfaits — yes, they even make their own yogurt — and a chocolate croissant. Both were fresh, delicious, and a perfect pairing with our lattes.

Sweet Donkey Coffee is one of those spots that feels like a true local hangout, and we loved our time there. It’s definitely a coffee shop we’ll return to on future visits, and one we’d recommend to anyone looking for a great cup of coffee in Roanoke.

Scratch Biscuit Company

Scratch Biscuit Company was high on our list for breakfast in Roanoke, and when we arrived, it was clear we weren’t the only ones with that idea. The line stretched out the door, and unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to wait it out. Still, after talking with locals and hearing from Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge, we quickly learned why this little spot has such a big reputation.

Known for their fresh, made-from-scratch biscuits, the menu features a variety of hearty breakfast sandwiches and Southern favorites. Popular picks include the fried chicken biscuit, sausage and egg biscuit, and their country ham biscuit. They also offer rotating specials, along with sides like cheesy grits and crispy hashbrowns, making it a true comfort food stop for breakfast lovers.

The restaurant itself is small with limited seating, which adds to its cozy charm but also means it can fill up fast. On busy mornings, a to-go order might be the best way to enjoy their biscuits without the wait.

Scratch Biscuit Company is absolutely staying on our shortlist for a future visit, and next time we’ll be sure to carve out enough time to get in line and finally taste those famous biscuits for ourselves.

Newman’s Restaurant at the Orchard Inn

Dining at Newman’s isn’t just a meal—it’s an experience, and one of the highlights of our weekend in Saluda. Located inside the Orchard Inn, this fine-dining spot offers a seasonal, four-course menu that’s as thoughtful as it is flavorful. The setting doesn’t hurt either: we enjoyed our dinner on the covered deck, surrounded by the quiet hush of the mountains and long-range views of the Blue Ridge rolling off into the distance.

We arrived a few minutes before our reservations. I wore slacks, a button-down shirt, nice shoes and a sports jacket. Jenn wore a casual dress and shoes.  

The evening began with some drinks from their full-service bar. They also have a great selection of red and white wines as well.

We began our meal with a Grilled Romaine Caesar Salad—simple but beautifully done, with just the right balance of char and crunch. For the second course, we split two appetizers: the Baked Eggplant Lesbos and a dish of pan-seared shrimp over fried green tomatoes. Both appetizers were packed with flavor, but the shrimp stole the show—crispy, creamy, and perfectly seasoned.

For our main course, we chose the filet and the salmon. The filet was tender and rich, cooked just right, while the salmon was flaky and fresh with a delicate sauce that didn’t overpower. And somehow, we still had room for dessert.

 The Viennese Apple Strudel was warm and spiced, wrapped in a flaky crust, while the strawberry shortcake offered a cool, sweet finish with fresh berries and whipped cream.

You place your full order at the beginning, so the courses come out at a relaxed, steady pace, giving you time to really enjoy the food—and the view. Service was excellent from start to finish: attentive, friendly, and perfectly timed. If you're celebrating something special, or just want a quiet night of incredible food in a beautiful mountain setting, Newman’s should be at the top of your list.

The next morning, we returned for breakfast on the covered deck, coffee in hand and a view that made us slow down and savor the moment. We started with one of their fresh-baked scones and a bowl of house-made granola with fresh fruit—simple, fresh, and delicious. For the main course, we had two eggs with bacon and a thick slice of fresh bread. It was the kind of breakfast that makes you want to linger a little longer, sip a second cup of coffee, and just enjoy the calm.

Whether you’re booking a special dinner or staying overnight and waking up to mountain air and a full breakfast, Newman’s is the kind of place that elevates your time in Saluda. Refined but never stuffy, peaceful yet deeply flavorful—it’s a true gem tucked right into the Orchard Inn.

Green River BBQ

We stopped at  Green River BBQ for lunch during the 20th Annual Saluda Arts Festival, and it hit the spot. The place was busy—no surprise with the festival in full swing—but the covered seating area had plenty of space.

Green River BBQ was closed for a while after Hurricane Helene, due to a significant mudslide that occurred behind the restaurant building, but they’ve since reopened and are back to serving up great food in a laid-back, casual, and welcoming atmosphere.

We grabbed a seat at one of the big picnic tables and looked over the menu. They offer a wide range of BBQ favorites, including pulled pork, ribs, brisket, and smoked chicken, along with classic Southern sides like baked beans, mac and cheese, collard greens, and hush puppies. They also have a solid selection of sandwiches, salads, and local craft beers. Whether you're craving something heavy and smoky or something lighter, there's lots of options.

We started with their fried green tomatoes, which our waitress recommended. They were crispy, tangy, delicious, and a great warm-up for our entrees.

For our entrees, we went with the classic pulled pork sandwich plate and the brisket plate. Both came piled high with tender, smoky meat and classic sides. The pulled pork had just the right amount of smoke and didn’t need much sauce, though they’ve got plenty to choose from if you like to mix it up. The brisket was rich and flavorful with a nice crust on the outside—exactly what you want when you’re craving solid Southern barbecue. They will even trim the fat off for you.

 Green River BBQ is a casual, come-as-you-are kind of place—ideal for lunch during a festival, after a hike, or when you’re just passing through town. It’s dog-friendly, family-friendly, and an excellent stop if you’re hungry and want something hearty and local.

The Purple Onion

The Purple Onion is one of those restaurants that feels like the heartbeat of a town—and when we walked in, it was easy to see why it’s so well-loved. The place was buzzing on the night we visited, with nearly every table full, live music drifting through the air, and the kind of lively, laid-back energy that makes you want to hang out and stay a while.  Definitely our kind of restaurant and one we would frequent if we lived in the area.

The Purple Onion offers both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a full bar with its own seating area. We lucked out with a spot near the live music and settled in for a relaxed, unhurried dinner that ended up being one of our favorites of the trip.

We started with the crab dip—rich, creamy, and served warm with toasted bread. From there, we split the Pink Lady & Gorgonzola Salad, which was crisp, fresh, and perfectly balanced.

For our entrée, we couldn’t resist the halibut special, and it didn’t disappoint. Cooked beautifully, with a light, flavorful sauce, it was one of those dishes you wish you could recreate at home.

We wrapped things up with dessert—Tiramisu and bread pudding—and honestly, we’d go back just for that bread pudding alone.

Everything about The Purple Onion just clicked for us—the food, the atmosphere, the service. It’s lively without being too loud, nice but not too upscale, and exactly the kind of place we seek out when we’re exploring a small town. The live music that evening was excellent as well and really complimented the great food and atmosphere.

If you’re spending a night in Saluda and only have time for one dinner, this should be it.

The Wakey Monkey

We started one of our mornings in Saluda with breakfast at  Wakey Monkey, and it was exactly the kind of local coffee shop we love to find while traveling. Tucked right in the heart of downtown, it’s warm, welcoming, and clearly a favorite among both locals and visitors. The vibe is relaxed, the coffee’s top-notch, and the staff—including the owners—were genuinely super friendly and great to chat with.

We each ordered a vanilla latte, and they were excellent—smooth, not overly sweet, and made with care. For breakfast, we grabbed two sandwiches: one on a toasted bagel with sausage and egg, and the other on a buttery croissant with bacon and egg. Both were fresh, hot, and just what we needed before a day of exploring.

Wakey Monkey also has a nice selection of baked goods and other breakfast items if you’re in the mood for something lighter. Whether you’re looking for a quick grab-and-go coffee or a spot to sit and ease into your morning, this place checks all the boxes. Definitely worth a stop while you're in town.

K’s NY Pizza

Before heading out for our zip lining adventure at The Gorge, we stopped at K’s NY Pizza for a quick and casual lunch—and it hit the spot.

It’s the newest restaurant in town, perched just above Main Street, and offers some really nice views overlooking downtown Saluda. They’ve got covered outdoor seating, which made for a great place to relax before diving into a more adrenaline-packed part of the day.

We ordered the Italian sub and a Margherita pizza to split. The sandwich was stacked and flavorful, with that classic deli-style tang, and the pizza had a crisp crust, fresh tomato, and plenty of basil—simple and satisfying. We also couldn’t pass up the cannoli for dessert, which was creamy and just sweet enough to wrap things up.

K’s is a solid stop if you're looking for something quick, filling, and low-key. Whether you’re grabbing lunch on the go or want a laid-back spot with a view, it’s a nice new addition to the Saluda food scene.

Although we didn’t get a chance to eat at Ward’s Grill on this trip (our weekend was packed, and we ran out of time), it’s a spot that kept coming up in conversations with locals—and that’s always a good sign. Tucked right next to and connected with Thompson’s Store, Ward’s Grill is a classic Southern-style diner that’s been a longtime staple in Saluda.

They serve up traditional breakfast and lunch fare—think eggs, grits, biscuits, pancakes, burgers, sandwiches, and daily plate specials. The vibe is simple, unpretentious, and all about good food at a good price. Locals stop in for their morning coffee and a hearty breakfast, and it’s just as popular for a quick bite at lunch.

If you're looking for a casual, no-fuss meal with a bit of small-town history and charm, Ward’s Grill should definitely be on your radar. We’re already planning to make time for it on our next visit. Oh, and browse Thompson's store, next door while you're there. It's the oldest operating grocery store in North Carolina.

McDowell Local - Now Closed

If you enjoy a restaurant that serves fresh, locally sourced ingredients, McDowell Local needs to be on your short list. Located in downtown Marion, this charming locally owned restaurant uses high-quality local ingredients to create some really delicious and fresh tasting food.

We stopped by during our visit to Marion to grab some lunch. McDowell Local came highly recommended by the visitors' center and other locals we spoke with.   

The interior has a casual and rustic vibe that feels very open and welcoming. The rustic decor is simple, but effective. Where they really shine, though, is the food.

The menu has all of lunch items you would expect: soups and salads, a variety of wraps and sandwiches, and combinations with both soup and a sandwich. Do you like liver mush? They even have a liver mush sandwich.

Be sure to check the chalkboard when you come in as well, for daily specials.

We try to eat pretty healthy, and went with the turkey wrap and Italian wrap, both with side salads.

Every bite was packed with flavor, and honestly some of the freshest ingredients we've had anywhere. We were honestly taken aback at how colorful and delicious the food was.

The wraps were huge as well, as they didn't skimp on the meat or veggies. The salads were ice cold, and topped with pickled onions, a nice touch that added some extra flavor.

While what we ate was nothing out of the ordinary as far as lunch goes, it's just proof that simple, fresh ingredients make all the difference.

Whether you’re craving a sandwich, a fresh salad, or something unique from their rotating specials, you can count on McDowell Local to serve up delicious, thoughtfully prepared food that supports local farmers and producers.

McDowell Local is a true gem in Marion that you won’t want to miss!

J Hartman's Restaurant

Hurricane Helene Impact - J Hartman's was completely flooded just days after we ate there by Hurricane Helene. The entire restaurant had to be gutted and rebuilt. They recently re-opened. Please visit and help support them!

We visited for dinner one evening while staying in nearby Old Fort, NC. We sat at the bar and met John Hartman, and enjoyed talking to his daughter who was bartending - We love a family-owned business!

The menu is packed with both classic favorites and creative dishes. Whether you’re in the mood for a perfectly cooked steak, a hearty sandwich, or a flavorful salad, J. Hartman’s delivers on taste, quality and atmosphere.

Here are just a few of the items from the menu, including their prime rib, which they are well known for:

We start started with some drinks from the bar and the hot crab dip as an appetizer. The crab dip was really good and not fishy tasting. 

For our entrees, we chose their blue cheese wedge salad and crab cakes and salmon with steamed broccoli. The wedge salad was huge, and a meal by itself!

Everything came out hot and prepared correctly. The food was delicious, as were our drinks. We really enjoyed the food and casual and friendly vibe of the restaurant. We'll definitely be back.

With its family-run charm, excellent food, and inviting bar area, J. Hartman’s is the kind of place where you instantly feel at home. Whether you’re a local looking for your new favorite spot or a visitor wanting an authentic Marion dining experience, this is one restaurant you won’t want to miss!

Blanton House

If you enjoy a more elegant dining experience, The Blanton House in down Marion is your standout choice.

Located in a beautifully restored historic home, this elegant restaurant blends historic southern charm with a modern culinary excellence.  

We enjoyed a really nice dinner on one of the outdoor decks once evening after exploring downtown Marion.

The restaurant does not have dedicated parking, so you'll need to park on the street or in one of the business parking areas across the street if they are closed. Do not park at the postal service next door, as you may be towed.

After parking across the street, we walked up the walkway and literally felt transported back in time. The historic old home and ambiance sets the tone for the experience.

We entered through the front door. The home is full of stunning historic architecture, warm lighting, and refined décor which creates an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere.

When making your reservations, you can enjoy your meal indoors or in one of the many outdoor seating options, including the patio.

We sat on a covered outdoor area on the second floor, and had the whole area to ourselves, along with a good view of the property.

The menu is just as impressive as the home and features expertly crafted southern themed dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The menu changes, so be sure to check their website for their current food offerings.

We ordered some speciality drinks and some friend green tomatoes with pimento cheese, which we really enjoyed and set the stage for our entrees.

We ordered the shrimp and grits and the salmon, and both were fantastic.  

We really enjoyed our dinner at Blanton House. The food and service were excellent. We also enjoyed just exploring the old home and taking photos as well.  

If you're wondering about the dress code like we were, it seems to resort casual based on other guests we saw there. I (Larry) wore tan slacks and a colored polo shirt, and Jenn wore slacks and a blouse. It's not super fancy, but a little more upscale than a typical family type restaurant.

The Blanton House is perfect for special occasions, date nights, or anyone looking to savor an upscale meal in a truly unique setting. 

Smoke a 'Lil Smoke

You know, when a restaurant was formally a food truck; the food is going to be amazing.

Such is the case for Smoke a 'Lil Smoke, a fantastic BBQ restaurant, tucked away on a small street in Marion, Smoke a ‘Lil Smoke is a true hidden gem that BBQ lovers need to experience. This spot may be off the beaten path, but once you find it, you’ll quickly realize it’s one of the coolest places in town to grab a bite.

The first thing you’ll notice is the laid-back, welcoming and "cool" vibe—a mix of rustic charm and modern flair that makes it the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy some seriously good food. 

Colorful drawings and BBQ graffiti decorate the walls, as well as the ceiling. We loved the partially exposed brick as well.   

But of course, the real star here is the BBQ, and it's good, really good.

We stopped by for lunch and sat in the front near a window. You order at the counter, and they bring your food out to you. The menu deserves a mention, not only because it's simple and easy to read, but because it's fun.

For example, you can get chicken, cow or pig OR you can "get the whole farm".

They have all of your traditional BBQ favorites, including pulled pork and brisket. We really liked that they offered BBQ chicken. They also have some more unique items like loaded, where you choose the base and topping - For example, Mac and Cheese topped with pulled pork!   

They also have smoked chicken wings as well. They even have a bologna sandwich!

We went with brisket and smoked chicken with some fries, beans, and coleslaw. The brisket was nice and smoky and very tender, as was the smoked chicken. No dry BBQ here. The fries were unique and really tasty, as were the beans. I like to try different coleslaw when we're out - This was good as well, although I don't prefer it chopped.

If you’re looking for amazing BBQ in a fun, hip and relaxed setting, Smoke a 'Lil Smoke is one of Marion’s best-kept secrets.  

Ingenious Coffee Roasters

If you’re looking for the best coffee experience in Marion, Ingenious Coffee Roasters is it. We're big coffee fans and know an excellent coffee when we taste one.

We stopped in one morning for coffee and breakfast, and it was the perfect way to start the day (I mean, when is coffee not the perfect way to start a day?).

From the moment you walk in, the rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans fills the air, letting you know you’re in for something special.   

One of the standout things about Ingenious Coffee Roasters is that they roast their beans in-house, ensuring a fresh and flavorful cup. They have a large variety of flavors and offer up your standard coffee fair like regular coffee, Lattes, and expresso. You can choose your own flavor, or select one of their special coffees. We were there in September and enjoyed a fall themed flavor.

To go with our coffee, we couldn’t resist their selection of locally baked goods—perfect for a quick breakfast. During our visit, we tried the muffins and cinnamon rolls. All very good and complimented our coffees well.

Our only complaint is that the coffees come in one size. We prefer a 20 or 24 ounce size so we can sip on it while heading down the road. But that's a minor complaint, especially given how good the coffee is.

With its cozy atmosphere and in house roasted coffee, Ingenious Coffee Roasters is a must-visit for coffee lovers. This local favorite is a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring Marion!

27 Main - Now Closed

5/18/2026 Update: 27 Main has sold its building and is now closed. Something new is opening to replace it, and we'll update this guide once we know more. We hate to see them go as they served up some good food!

Located in the hear of downtown Old Fort, right off of main street, 27 Main offers great food and service at a reasonable price.

27 Main offers a fantastic mix of specials, sandwiches and pizza. 

The restaurant delivers a cool vibe, with a rustic yet contemporary décor, with exposed brick walls, wooden tables, and soft lighting creating a relaxed and casual atmosphere. The friendly staff adds to the experience, making you feel like you're visiting an old friend’s home rather than just another restaurant.

During our recent visit to Old Fort, NC, we stopped in to grab a quick lunch. Jenn ordered the Italian sub with chips, and I (Larry) ordered the Cold Cut sandwich, also with chips. The couple next to us were munching away on the cheese sticks, so we ordered those as well.

Our food came out quickly and was great. The Italian sandwich wasn't what you would normally expect though, as it only came with ham and not the more traditional meats we expected. The cheese sticks/bread were hot and delicious with plenty of cheese and served with marinara sauce on the side.

Some other customers in the restaurant ordered pizza, which smelled and looked delicious. We're definitely trying it next time we visit. We heard great reviews about it from locals we spoke to.

For those more familiar with Old Fort NC, you might know 27 Main better as Whistle Stop Pizza and Subs. They sold to new owners, rebranded and remodelled earlier in 2024. While the look is more modern and different, the food remains delicious.

27 Main is a great spot for lunch or dinner, especially if you're exploring the various shops and galleries in downtown Old Fort.

Black Beary's Cafe

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to eat at Black Beary's Cafe like we had planned, but we heard some excellent feedback from several locals who enjoy eating there, especially their ice cream. 

Located in the heart of Old Fort, NC, Black Beary's Cafe is a favorite spot for lunch and dinner, offering a relaxed, no-frills atmosphere and a menu packed with classic Southern comfort food.

Per locals we spoke with, Black Beary's Cafe is a cozy and down-to-earth spot known for its delicious, home-style cooking and ice-cream

The Chicken Fried Steak is a local favorite, tender and crispy, served with two sides and bread for a more hearty meal. 

They also offer a variety of sandwiches and hamburgers, including the BLT and Roast Beef Sandwich, Bacon Swiss Burger, Pimento Cheese burger, and many others.

You can follow up your meal up with a delicious dessert, with ice cream in a variety of flavors being a local favorite. They also have sundaes, banana splits, shakes, and floats. 

With its friendly atmosphere and tasty, no-frills fare, Black Beary’s Cafe is a must-visit when you're in Old Fort. We look forward to trying them on our next visit!

Davis Country Store & Cafe

For a real local experience, and some fantastic home cooking, grab breakfast or lunch at the Davis Country Store and Cafe.

One morning during our visit, we stopped by for breakfast as they opened. The friendly staff and the wonderful aromas of fresh, home-cooked breakfast items immediately greeted us.

Walking into the restaurant feels like stepping back in time. The rustic charm of the store and cafe, with its vintage decor and shelves stocked with local goods, really sets the tone. The restaurant and store are in a charming old home that just screams southern hospitality and goodness.

The breakfast menu features standard breakfast fare and many types of homemade biscuit sandwiches. 

We enjoyed their biscuits and gravy and a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. The food doesn’t disappoint. 

The food is served, even when dining in, in to go containers, but don't let that fool you, the food is excellent. As southerns, we know biscuits, and these were not only hot and fresh, but on point, and cooked to perfection.

The hot and made to order lattes were also good, hot, and with lots of creamy froth.

We both really enjoyed the food and talking with the owners who are native to the area. Their family goes back for generations.

Gogos Cinnamon Rolls and Coffee

One of our top spots in Old Fort was Gogos Cinnamon Rolls and Coffee. As soon as you step through the door, the enticing aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls draws you in, making it nearly impossible to resist.

Gogos is a cozy little cafe style place that specializes in creating what might just be the best cinnamon rolls we’ve ever tasted—and trust us, we've had some fantastic fresh baked cinnamon rolls over the years.

We went in expecting cinnamon rolls, as the name would imply. What we didn't expect was the variety! Gogos not only has your standard cinnamon roll, but lots of variations as well, including chocolate, maple bacon, caramel pecan, orange creamsicle, and more!

Even better? They also offer homemade Oatmeal Cream Pies and Fudge Rounds. Yes, the ones by Little Debbie, but these are made in-house from scratch, and absolutely fantastic.

After agonizing over which rolls to take with us, we ended up going with a chocolate cinnamon bun, a maple bacon cinnamon bun, a oatmeal cream pie, and a fudge round. To fully share our experience with you, we had to properly sample everything, right?

The cinnamon rolls at Gogos are a perfect blend of soft, fluffy dough and gooey, cinnamon-sugar filling, topped with just the right amount of icing. Everything was just beyond delicious.

We spent some time talking with the owners as well, who are super friendly folks. They are a pastor and wife of a local church. They were expecting a bus load of middle-schoolers soon, so we bailed out and enjoyed our fresh baked goodness on the road.

The welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff make Gogos the perfect place to start your day or enjoy a mid-morning treat. Be sure to arrive early, as these cinnamon rolls are popular and tend to sell out quickly.

When visiting Old Fort, Gogos Cinnamon Rolls is an absolute must-visit—your taste buds will thank you!

Hillman Beer

We'll be honest, we aren't generally impressed with the food at most breweries. The food is mainly just simple bar type food, prepared with little effort. We get it; the focus is on the drinks.   

We have been seeing a recent trend, though, where breweries are stepping up their game regarding food offerings and quality. Hillman Beer is an exemplary example of this. Not only is the beer cold and tasty, but the food is fantastic. To be honest, something we would have expected to see at a nice restaurant, not a brewery.

Hillman Beer in downtown Old Fort, NC is a great spot to unwind with fantastic food, great beer, and honestly a super nice creek side atmosphere. They have a full menu of beer selections, and delicious food that pairs perfectly with their in-house brews.

As we mentioned, the food at Hillman Beer goes far beyond and above the typical pub/brewery fare. Most of the items on their menu use locally sourced ingredients and are made to order (i.e. not frozen).  

When you arrive, you'll place your food and beverage order at the bar and your given a number. Someone will bring you your food.

We spent some time reviewing the menu, and we suggest you do the same. Just grab one, and step aside so you can fully look at everything they offer. The staff member working the bar was super helpful and made a few recommendations for us.

We ended up going with the Altbier and a glass of wine for drinks. For food, we ordered the soft pretzels, the Kale Salad and Roasted Turkey Salad wrap. 

We're pretty healthy eaters, but they also offer many other options, including different burgers, sandwiches, and specials.

We picked the outdoor side of the bar, that was creek side. We enjoyed our beverages, and the food arrived within a few minutes. Very fresh, and tasty. The beer cheese served with the hot pretzels was excellent.

Besides the great food and beer, what really sets Hillman Beer apart is its inviting, open atmosphere. They have a done a fantastic job creating and open and modern atmosphere that really blends together the indoor and outdoor seating areas.

Whether you’re a craft beer enthusiast or simply looking for a delicious meal in a chill setting, Hillman Beer is a must-visit. Their combination of exceptional food, excellent beer, and a charming atmosphere makes it a standout in Old Fort’s dining scene.

Seeker Coffee

We love a warm, inviting, comfy coffee shop that serves great coffee. Finding shops with this unique combination is rare for us on our mountain adventures. We found one in Old Fort, Seeker Coffee.

This charming coffee shop serves up some of the best brews we've had anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains, making it the perfect place to kick back, recharge and enjoy an amazing craft made coffee, expresso or latte.

Nathan, the owner, takes pride in sourcing high-quality and locally roasted beans, to create a variety of flavorful drinks. Whether you prefer a smooth cappuccino, a regular coffee, or an indulgent flavored latte, you’ll find the right cup for you. Their baristas are skilled and passionate, ensuring that every drink is crafted with care and for your enjoyment.  

The vibe at Seeker Coffee offers "a chill" and inviting atmosphere that makes it easy to linger. They have comfortable seating, warm lighting, and a welcoming staff. It’s a great spot to catch up with friends, dive into a good book, enjoy some quiet time with your coffee, or pull out the laptop and get some work done.

They also offer some delicious baked pastries to complement your favorite beverage as well. 

Whether you’re stopping by for your morning caffeine fix or spending a leisurely afternoon, Seeker Coffee is a great coffee shop in Old Fort, NC. One of our personal favorites!

Our Favorite Restaurants in Mt Airy NC

While all the restaurants below are our top picks for where to eat in Mount Airy, if we had to pick just one, it would be Southern on Main in nearby Elkin NC.

To be fair though, all of them offer delicious food at very reasonable prices and provide good service as well.  We based our picks on our own individual experience at each restaurant using criteria of service, cleanliness, food quality, portions and price.

Our favorite restaurants in Mount Airy North Carolina, are listed below in alphabetical order.

Barney's Cafe

We felt like we really couldn't visit Mount Airy NC and not eat at Barney's Cafe. They are open for breakfast and lunch. They serve traditional southern comfort food, including delicious mouth watering burgers, and some incredible looking desserts!

We visited for breakfast one morning, shortly after they opened.  

Barney's Cafe is exactly what you expect, an old-fashioned cafe style restaurant themed to Mayberry and Barney Fife in particular. In fact, you'll find lots of Barney photos on the walls, along with other Mayberry items and photos as well.

For breakfast they offer lots of choose from, including breakfast favorites, Mayberry's Big Country breakfast, omelets, and biscuit sandwiches. We went with the Sweet Taste of Mayberry and Breakfast Favorite #1, and ordered coffee with both.

Jenn ordered The Sweet Taste of Mayberry with 2 scrambled eggs, bacon, and French toast (Jenn is a French Toast connoisseur). I went with favorite #1 with scrambled eggs, sausage patties, and hash browns.

I'm a stickler for good coffee and honestly, awful coffee can ruin a breakfast experience for me. The coffee at Barney's was hot and flavorful.

Overall, the breakfast was very good, certainly not the best breakfast we've had on our adventures, but definitely good, especially for the reasonable cost and portions. We really enjoyed it and would visit again for breakfast.

For lunch they offer salads, multiple Barney Burgers (the southern pimento sounded delicious), hot and cold sandwiches and ice cream. While we didn't get to try them for lunch, the menu certainly sounded good, and if lunch was as good as breakfast, it would be hard to go wrong grabbing lunch at Barney's.

Barney's Cafe is a convenient place to grab a simple but delicious breakfast or lunch at a very reasonable price.   

Rusty Rooster Southern Breakfast

We visited the Rusty Rooster for breakfast one morning during our visit to Mount Airy, and liked it so much, we ate there again the next morning. While the name says "Breakfast," they do serve lunch as well.   

They offer a large and family friendly dining area, and our experience deliver excellent service, large portions and a great breakfast. Their breakfast menu is huge, from breakfast tacos to eggs benedict. The prices are very reasonable, especially given the large portion sizes.

We arrived around 8am on a weekend, and it wasn't too busy. The hostess, who brought us to our table, warmly greeted us. We reviewed the large menus while waiting on our server, who arrived shortly after and was very friendly and helpful.

I'm a big eggs benedict fan. I ordered their standard eggs benedict with hash browns. Jenn ordered the French toast. Our food arrived quickly, hot, and as we had ordered it.

Both meals were excellent, not fancy, but just plain tasty. As you can see in the photos, the portions are large, but not over the top either. 

Our server was attentive and friendly and kept our coffee mugs full.

Overall, we had an excellent breakfast experience at the Rusty Rooster, again, so much so we ate there again the next morning. We highly recommend them, based on our experience, and they were our favorite breakfast spot in Mount Airy during our visit.

Snappy Lunch

Snappy Lunch is the oldest operating business in Mount Airy, NC, opening in 1923. They have been serving up affordable good food for over 100 years. 

For you Mayberry fans, Snappy Lunch is also the only real Mount Airy business mentioned in the Andy Griffith show. You may recall in the "Andy the Matchmaker" episode Andy is talking to Barney about going on a double date, and mentions going to Snappy Lunch.

Today, Snappy lunch servers burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and their world famous pork chop sandwich. The restaurant is so popular that there is often a line out the door and up Main Street to get in. Fortunately, the line moves fast.

We arrived in Mount Airy around lunchtime and headed straight to Snappy Lunch. As expected, there was a line, but we didn't have to wait long. The interior is what you would expect of a simple historic diner serving great food. Simple and effective, with a red and white interior. We sat in the room on the other side of Floyd's Barbershop.

While the different menu items sounded really good, we couldn't resist ordering the world famous porkchop sandwich with some chips and a soda.

The food came out quickly, and our sandwich was wrapped in paper. Opening it up, revealed a pressed sandwich that smelled wonderful. The porkchop sandwich is a thin porkchop, batter dipped, fried, topped with chili and slaw and placed on bun and pressed. The secret is in the batter, which reminded us of pancake batter.  

While simple, the sandwich is delicious, and messy in the good kind of way.

We really enjoyed our visit, the reminder that a fancy "ambience" isn't required for great food. Snappy Lunch delivers just that, simple, great food.

Southern on Main in nearby Elkin

We're cheating a little on this one, as Southern on Main isn't in Mount Airy, but it's only a short drive away and honestly, well worth the drive.  

Southern on Main was our favorite dining experience during our visit to Mount Airy and should definitely be at the top of your list. They deliver excellent food with a casual yet upscale dining experience.   

We arrived in Elkin well before our dinner reservations, just to explore a little. It's a cool and historic town. Southern on Main is located directly in the heart of downtown Elkin at East Main Street and South Bridge Street. The restaurant is in a historic Elkin building, with a beautiful vineyard mural on the side.

Southern on Main server lunch, dinner and Sunday Brunch. We arrived for our 7pm dinner reservations, and were greeted and seated by the friendly hostess. We began looking over the menu, which was full of mouth watering items like shrimp and grits, mountain trout, friend green tomatoes and southern popcorn (fried okra).

We decided to start with an appetizer of the pastry wrapped baked brie, with caramel drizzle and sliced apples.  We also ordered some drinks, including their "butter my ... old fashioned" with smoked brown butter syrup.

The baked brie was fantastic, especially with the caramel drizzle.  We really enjoyed it, and it was the great start to what would become a fantastic meal.

After agonizing over the many delicious sounding choices, we ordered our entrees. Jenn went with the Pan Grilled Pork Medallions with port wine and dried cranberry sauce, with asparagus and mashed sweet potatoes. I went with a filet topped with gorgonzola cream and crispy onions, with a lump crab cake and French green beans.

Both meals were absolutely fantastic, and full of lots of complex and complimenting flavors. Both the steak and pork chops were perfectly cooked, as requested as well.

The dessert menu was just too tempting, and we shared the apple sonker (Southern and Main is on The Sonker Trail) and the pecan pie with ice cream. As expected, both delicious and the ice cream on both was exceptional.

Southern on Main was a pleasant surprise for us. While we love exploring new restaurants in small Blue Ridge Mountain towns, we don't generally experience food this good, and Southern on Main is one of our top favorite restaurants in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Thirsty Souls Community Brewing

We visited Thirsty Souls Community Brewing during a Juneteenth festival on Market Street (aka the hip side of Mayberry). While primarily a craft brewery with a selection of 12 different locally crafted beers, they also have a nice selection of wines, ciders and food.  

The food menu contains salads, different finger foods (including meat and cheese trays), and their speciality, artisan pizza. They even have a cauliflower crust available on request.

We found a table indoors, ordered a beer flight, some wine, and a Margherita Pizza. The place was really busy, but still seemed very open, casual and inviting, with a mixture of tables and comfortable couch seating areas near the windows. We definitely got a very strong local and friendly vibe.

They also offer outdoor seating, but it was a hot day during our visit and most guests were staying indoors.

Our Margherita pizza was served quickly, and the chef cooked it to perfection with fresh ingredients (which honestly surprised us). It tasted delicious. The mini-brick ovens cook the pizzas quickly as the chefs make and cook them to order.

The wine selection was fantastic, as were the wines. The beer flights are a selection of four locally crafted beers from their list of 12 available. My favorites were the Arseways Irish Ale, and the White Ghost Hefe.  I'm not an IPA drinker, so passed on their IPA selections. 

We loved our visit to Thirsty Souls Community Brewing. The beers, wine and atmosphere were wonderful. While the selection of food is small, it's all very good, and if you love pizza like we do, you'll be thrilled with the offerings and fresh flavors. Definitely stop by!
  

Arabella Breakfast & Brunch

If you're looking for a tasty and friendly brunch spot in downtown Hendersonville, Arabella Breakfast & Brunch should be at the top of your list.

Located on Main Street in Hendersonville's charming downtown area, Arabella offers a cozy and casual atmosphere alongside classic breakfast staples and innovative twists on traditional brunch favorites. The food is fantastic.

We arrived around noon, and there was a 30 minute wait. We gave our names, were handed a buzzer, and told to either wait outside or in the lobby next to the restaurant. This was our only complaint. Waiting outside for us, since it was winter, wasn't a great option, and the lobby, while warm, has no seating. Not a huge issue for us, but worth mentioning, since it could be a factor for some.

We were seated in about 30 minutes and began looking over the menu. The menu is full of delicious options that honestly made choosing just one a bit difficult. What really caught our eye was the Latin section, that included heuvos rancheros, tacos, and heuvos chorizo. We love heuvos rancheros.

We ended up ordering biscuits and gravy (called the Swimming Piglet) and Tomato Bisque and a cheese sandwich. We wanted to try both their breakfast and lunch options.

Our meals arrived shortly after we placed our order, hot and fresh, from the kitchen. Both meals were fantastic. The Tomato bisque was creamy and tasty, with just the right amount of seasoning. The cheese sandwich was crisp on the outside, but not overly done.

The Swimming Piglet had 3 smaller semi-sweet biscuits, covered in sausage gravy, with lots of sausage too.  The gravy paired well with the biscuits, and the meal was surprisingly not too heavy.

Now with all of that said and even though we enjoyed our choices, we regretted not trying the heuvos racheros. We'll just have to visit again!

Root & Bone

Harvey's at the Henderson

Harvey's is located inside the historic Henderson Inn. This charming restaurant embraces its history and combines it with a gourmet, yet casual and comfortable flair. The small dining room is intimate, and offers a cozy yet refined setting perfect for breakfast, brunch, or dinner.

We arrived at 6:00pm for dinner.  We parked next to the historic hotel on Church Street, and walked to the entrance, which was beautiful decorated for the holidays along with the entire Inn.  See our photos below.

We were greeted by the owner and Executive Chef Michael and the hostess.  They led us through the gorgeous Inn to the intimate dining room and seated us at a comfortable table. A large TV was playing It's a wonderful life, completing the retro holiday vibe we were feeling.

Our server promptly came over, introduced herself, and went over the drink options. Jenn ordered a Myrtle Mae (a twist on a Cosmo) and I (Larry) ordered the Old Fashioned. While waiting for our drinks, we looked over the menu. While there are some restaurant staples that are consistently on the menu, the menu does frequently change based on the season and ingredients.

Our drinks arrived after a few minutes; their in-house mixologist did a fantastic job. They not only tasted great, but were well presented as well.

We ordered the baked brie as an appetizer, but there were several different great sounding options to choose from, including Buffalo Devilled Eggs, Caprese, Escargots and Sea Scallops. They also offer a number of salad options and soups as well.

Our Baked Brie en Croute arrived quickly. It was two portions of hot Brie lighted encrusted. On the plate was a Wild Berry & Jalapeno Marmalade and French Bread Crostinis. The marmalade was absolutely delicious and a lovely mix of spicy and sweet.

We really enjoyed the baked brie, and the portions were perfect. While enjoying the appetizer, and struggled with what to get for our main entrees. Jenn went with the Free Range Chicken Pot Pie, and I ordered the oven roasted scallops with the Delmonico Wedge Salad.  

A few notable items on the menu were Traditional British Fish & Chips, Pan Seared NC Mountain Trout, Braised Beef Short Ribs, and Zucchini Ravioli.

We enjoyed watching It's a Wonderful Life, and discussing how we couldn't believe neither of us had ever seen it before. It's on our shortlist now for movie night.

Our food arrived shortly and not only smelled delicious, but looked beautiful as well. Jenn's Chicken Pot Pie was steaming hot, and the topping was perfectly cooked, with a deep golden yellow color. My scallops were delicious and perfectly cooked as well. The wedge salad was crisp and cold, as it should be, and the blue cheese dressing with bacon was excellent tasting.  

Overall, the food was excellent, and we really enjoyed it. We would definitely eat here again, especially given the reasonable prices for the quality of food.  

We stopped short of eating everything, so we could save room for a little dessert which included a Raspberry Creme Brulee, Molten Valrhona Chocolate Cake, Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake, and Butterscotch & Chocoloate Chip Bread Pudding.

The Bread Pudding is a signature item for the Harvey's and a favorite with locals we talked with. We ordered the Bread Pudding and cheesecake. As to be expected, both were delicious!

We really enjoyed our meal and dining experience at Harvey's at the Henderson.  To be honest, we don't think this fantastic restaurant gets the attention it deserves. The ambience is lovely, the historic Inn beautiful, the food is fantastic, and the service was top-notch.

We really liked that the menu was seasonal and rotating as well.  

After our meal, we really enjoyed exploring the main floor of the Inn, and looking at the holiday decorations since we had visited in December. 

With its combination of delicious food, charming atmosphere, and impeccable service, Harvey’s at The Henderson is a true hidden gem in downtown Hendersonville. Ecusta Café & Market – Fresh Food, Local Flavor, and Family-Friendly Charm

If you’re planning to ride the Ecusta Trail — or just want a great local lunch spot in Hendersonville — make sure to stop by Ecusta Café & Market. We ate lunch here before our e-bike ride on the trail and absolutely loved it.

The cafe offers a wonderful selection of fresh sandwiches, salads, and snacks, all made with high-quality ingredients and plenty of local flavor. Jenn tried the Apple Country Grilled Cheese with chips, while I went for the Chicken Salad Sandwich with dill pickle potato salad. Both meals were fresh, flavorful, and delicious — the kind of food that tastes homemade, with unique touches that set it apart from typical cafe fare.

After lunch, we wandered through their adjoining market, which is stocked with local and regional goods — everything from fresh produce and baked items to craft beer, wine, and specialty foods. It’s the kind of place where you can grab lunch, browse for local treats, or pick up picnic supplies for a day on the trail.

Ecusta Café & Market is also very family-friendly. The owners, who have three children, have created a welcoming space with an indoor play area, outdoor seating, and even a small playground. Whether you’re coming off the trail or just exploring Hendersonville, this café is the perfect spot to relax, enjoy a great meal, and soak in a bit of local charm. We highly recommend it.

Postero

Postero is an upscale but casual restaurant in an old bank building in downtown Hendersonville proved to be one of our favorites during our recent visit.

This two-story restaurant serves up "a dash of modern-day flavor to the traditional recipes we’ve loved for so long". They offer a full bar, and an open kitchen as well, that was busy yet never frantic, the entire time we were there.

The menu includes starters like Shrimp Ceviche, Burrata Toast, and Pork Belly and Watermelon.

For entrees, the menu includes: Steak, scallops, chicken, pork tenderloin, and pan roasted salmon.

We started off with the Burrata Toast, which was excellent, and then we ordered the Steak and Pan Roasted Salmon.

The Steak was sliced, grilled 8 oz. bistro tender, summer corn & tomato salad, avocado, sunflower seed chili crisp, and queso blanco. The Salmon was pan roasted salmon, summer panzanella with tomatoes, Red Onions, cucumbers, summer squash, warm back & whole grain mustard vinaigrette.

Both dishes were absolutely fantastic, and the array of flavors was super fresh and blended wonderfully together.   We really enjoyed our entrees immensely.

We saved a little room for dessert and ordered the Banana and peanut butter pudding and the dark chocolate pot de creme. Both, just wonderful, and not too large as well.

Our meal at Postero was one of the best we've had anywhere, and we look forward to returning on our next visit to Hendersonville.

Shine

We loved Shine as well, also in downtown Hendersonville. It is a cozy spot intended for gathering with friends and enjoying some of the most creative dishes in town.

We began our visit by arriving about an hour prior to our reservations and heading up to the top of the restaurant to hang out at their rooftop bar. There is plenty of bar space and tables that all provide a delightful view of the surrounding city.  

We enjoyed a few drinks, relaxing and talking until it was time to head downstairs for our reservations. One note on the rooftop bar: they only serve drinks, no food.

We were seated at a nice table towards the front of the restaurant, facing the downtown area. To start with, we ordered some drinks and the stuffed shitake mushrooms as an appetizer. They were amazing and topped with delicious hollandaise sauce.

While waiting for the mushrooms, we looked over their pretty large menu and tried to narrow down our selections.   We finally asked our server for her recommendations and ended up going with the shrimp tortellini and crab cakes.

Both dishes came out quickly from the kitchen. The shrimp tortellini was beautiful, with the multi-colored pasta and topped with fresh parmesan cheese. It tasted even better than it looked! The crab cakes were great as well, and Chesapeake Bay style and served on top of rice.

Despite being full, we couldn't resist ordering dessert after our server's enticing us with the menu. We ended up trying the cheesecake and berry cobbler. Later we learned their multiple pastry chefs make their desserts in house. The desserts were fabulous, and that cheesecake was huge.

The food and atmosphere at Shine was excellent and our server was just wonderful, helpful and attentive.  We really enjoyed both the rooftop bar and our dinner in the dining room. We'll definitely be back, and in fact, we ended up visiting the rooftop bar again before we left Hendersonville.

They even have a roof-top bar that serves drinks only, but provides nice seating and rooftop views of the town. We hung out here a couple of nights during our visit. Definitely a great place to visit before or after dinner at Shine, or just to take a break while visiting downtown Hendersonville.

Ruby De Noche – Romantic Tapas and Cocktails in Flat Rock

Just a few minutes from downtown Hendersonville, Ruby De Noche in Flat Rock offers an unforgettable dining experience with a romantic atmosphere, creative small plates, and expertly crafted cocktails. We visited recently and absolutely loved everything about this place — from the mood lighting and décor to the outstanding food and service.

Ruby De Noche describes itself as a tapas and cocktail lounge, but it’s much more than that. The menu features both small and large plates, so you can sample a variety of dishes or enjoy a full dinner. We sat at the bar, where the service was top-notch, and started with drinks from their creative cocktail list.

I (Larry) had the Dirtystinktastic — a dirty martini made with blue cheese–stuffed olives and blue cheese crumbles mixed right into the drink. It was bold, rich, and definitely my kind of martini. Jenn ordered their specialty Old Fashioned, which was smooth and perfectly balanced.

For appetizers, we ordered the Devils on Horseback (dates wrapped in bacon) and were pleasantly surprised when our server also brought out a side of fresh hummus and warm pita bread — both were delicious.

For our main course, we shared the house-specialty Gumbo, made from a family recipe, along with a Caesar Salad with Shrimp, and their small plate of Chili Shrimp. The gumbo was divine — rich, hearty, and full of flavor — and the salad and salmon were excellent as well.

Even though we were full, the dessert menu convinced us to indulge. We tried the Peach Bread Pudding and the Lemon Cake — both outstanding, though the lemon cake stole the show with its light flavor and huge slice size.

From start to finish, our evening at Ruby De Noche was perfect — great food, creative cocktails, friendly staff, and an atmosphere that feels both intimate and fun. It’s now one of our new favorite restaurants in the Hendersonville area, and we can’t recommend it enough for anyone looking for a special night out.

Mezzaluna

Located alongside the charming shops and historic buildings of downtown Hendersonville NC is Mezzaluna Brick Oven and Tap House.

From the moment you step through the doors of this casual and contemporary eatery, you'll feel the inviting atmosphere that is reminiscent of a rustic Italian trattoria, complete with a roaring wood-fired oven that fills the air with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pizza, their speciality.

While their main offering is brick oven pizza and cold beer, they serve up, they also have lots of other Italian flavors and menu options.   

Their outdoor seating was full, so we fortunately got a seat indoors near the large front windows, which provided a pleasant view of the happenings in downtown Hendersonville. 

We started with some wine and a cold local draft beer, then ordered the Grouper bites as an appetizer, followed by a pizza for our entrée. We're big grouper fans, and the bites were delicious. I'll admit, we were skeptical, but we ordered them based on a recommendation from our server.  

Our pizza arrived shortly after we finished the grouper, and the pizza was excellent. Not too greasy, and cooked just right, with that classic brick oven taste, smell, and texture. They definitely know how to make a great pizza.

We were eating there for lunch and passed on the desserts. I'm glad we did, as the food was plenty enough for us for lunch and then some.

If you enjoy a great pizza with a cold beer, Mezzaluna should be your go to place when visiting Hendersonville!

Flat Rock Wood Room

Located just a few minutes from down Hendersonville is Flat Rock Wood Room, which specializes in a unique combination of food: BBQ and Neopolitan Pizza. The theme common theme here is "wood-fired", and the food is amazing.

Flat Rock Wood Room is located in a very large old home with a huge front porch that offers outdoor seating. As soon as you step into the Flat Rock Wood Room, you're greeted by a warm, rustic ambiance, evoking the feeling of a cozy mountain cabin. The wooden interiors, coupled with the aroma of wood-fired pizza and barbecue, set the stage for a dining experience that's as comforting as it is delicious.

The menu is a mouth watering mix of barbecue meats, gourmet wood-fired brick oven pizzas, other wood-fire food options and traditional southern sides. Each dish, from the succulent pulled pork to the crispy, chewy pizza crust, is a testament to the flavor provided by cooking with wood.

We started off with some wood-fired cheese bread, with an oil and herb dipping sauce. Absolutely fantastic.

While munching on the bread, we agonized over what to choose from all the wonderful sounding menu items. Our waitress finally gave us a few recommendations, and we ordered. Being a huge shrimp and grits fan, I had to try their BBQ shrimp and grits and Jenn ordered the burnt ends.  Both dishes were fantastic tasting, and very unique.  

The smoky BBQ sauce on the shrimp and grits really made the dish, and not only gave it a unique and delicious flavor, but made the overall dish different from any other shrimp and grits dish I had tried. In fact, I would say this was my favorite shrimp and grits I've ever had.

The burnt ends were moist, hot, and covered in a deliciously smoky and sweet sauce. Again, just excellent and very well prepared.

I want to say that Flat Rock Wood Room is a real hidden gem in Hendersonville, but given how full the parking lot was, I'm not really sure how hidden it is anymore.

Regardless, it's definitely a place you should have on your must visit list. The food at Flat Rock Wood Room is just wonderful, and the wood-fired flavor that is added to nearly every dish on the menu really makes it stand out.

The Book & Bee

We love exploring and uncovering the hidden gems of charming small mountain towns. We recently had the pleasure of visiting The Book & Bee in Hendersonville, NC.

The Book & Bee wasn't what we expected during our first visit, but it sure turned out to be a wonderful surprise, and one of our favorite places to eat in Hendersonville, NC. The Book & Bee is an English-style cafe and Tea room, that delivers a unique atmosphere, excellent food and tea.

While we think everyone will just love this small English themed cafe, tea and book lovers will quickly fall in love with this wonderful cafe.

Our adventure started as we walked up the stack of books that serve as the stairway to the entrance.  

The restaurant features multiple themed dining areas.  Each one has a different English theme, with tons of little details to find and explore. The attention to detail amazed us, and the owners did a fantastic job of decorating the restaurant and adding interest.

You'll enter the garden room to be seated. Other rooms include the Jubilee Room, featuring British royalty. The Stratford room, and finally the Eagle and Child Room, which feature English literature.

We sat in the Eagle and Child Room, which we loved and is our personal favorite with items from CS Lewis, Tolkien, JK Rowling and more!

While the atmosphere and decor is whimsical and fun, what really stands out is the tea and food. Even the menu itself is enjoyable to read with things like chapters, plot twists, and sub-plots!

We began our culinary adventure with some Gatsby Bourbon hot tea coupled with some brown sugar cubes. We skipped on the cream, per a recommendation from our server. Yes, we're not near as experienced with tea as we are coffee!

For lunch, we ordered the artichoke and spinach quiche with fruit, and mushroom and brie soup. We also tried the Gandalf's Fancy Grilled Cheese with red pepper soup. Both were fantastic and brought to our table hot and freshly made. Just writing about the feed makes us want to head back, the food was SO good.

We really enjoyed talking to the two ladies next to us, who were curious about us taking all the photos. They are regulars and highly recommended that we try the deserts. Unfortunately, we ran out of time, but our server was kind enough to give us a blueberry scone for the road, which was delicious!

We hope to return soon so we can try their desserts and update you on those as well!

We wrapped up our visit with Lesley and Victoria, the mother and daughter owners, giving us the full tour. For those of you that enjoy supporting family and locally owned businesses, you'll definitely want to visit.

 The Book & Bee Cafe and Tea offers a unique and charming dining experience in Hendersonville, NC. It's a wonderful spot to enjoy the experience of an English Cafe without the extra travel costs!

Silo Cookhouse at the Horse Shoe Farm

The Silo Cookhouse is a farm to table dining experience that offers high-end food in a unique dinner party atmosphere. The restaurant was previously only open to guests of the farm, but recently opened to the public.  

Not only can you enjoy a wonderful, fresh, and delightful dinner, but you can explore the farm or just relax next to the firepit with a drink and watch the sunset. We did all the above during our visit and had a wonderful time.

As you make your way onto the farm and towards the restaurant, you'll enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. The farm alone is just stunning.

The restaurant is in a historic farm building on a small hill, overlooking the farm. The restaurant delivers wonderful views of the farm and is perfectly situated so you can enjoy the sunset while enjoying your meal.

We entered and were immediately greeted by the friendly staff, who sat us down at the end of a very large table that resembled a picnic table, but much nicer. The restaurant offers what we can best describe as family style seating. There are two main tables that are large and accommodate many guests; hence the dinner party atmosphere.

The menu at Silo Cookhouse changes every few months, based on the season and the availability of fresh ingredients. Their spring menu had just been released during our visit, and was full of several delicious-looking items. The executive chef, Daniel Williams, came out to our table, introduced himself, and went over the menu items. He highlighted several items he was fond and proud of. His taking the time to visit the table personally was a nice touch, and appreciated.

For our appetizers, we started off with a Smoked Tomato Rici, which Chef Williams said was based on his grandmother's recipe, and the Poblano cheese. In addition, the chef sent out the mushroom toast and a preserve plate (house made pickles and preserves) to taste as well. All were wonderful, and we particularly enjoyed the Smoked Tomato Rici and the preserve plate.

The smoked Tomato Rici was honestly the highlight of the evening for us. Absolutely fresh and flavorful.

For entrees, we enjoyed the Fresh Catch and the house made Taliatelle pasta. Both were delicious, in particular the house pasta. The fresh strawberry relish on the fish really complemented the flavors.

While we were full, we had to try their in-house made desserts. We ordered the Pavlova, as we had never tried it before, and the Charlotte Royale, which was a strawberry mousse with strawberry jam. Both were fantastic and were a great way to wrap up our dinner.

After enjoying our huge and delicious meal, we ventured out onto the farm to walk off some of those calories and explore the beautiful farm some more. Be sure to walk up the very narrow stairs in the Silo next to the restaurant. You'll be treated to some nice views and some encouraging messages from visitors.

The outdoor patio with firepit is super nice as well. Be sure to grab a drink and relax by the fire as the sun sets over the mountains. It's a great way to wrap up a wonderful evening at Horse Shoe Farm, and The Silo Cookhouse.

Mike's on Main

Mike's on Main is another great spot in downtown Hendersonville. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, and the menu has all your comfort food favorites. It's a great place to visit if you're looking for something laid back and casual when dining out.

Mike's on Main has its roots in Hendersonville history because it occupies the former Justus Pharmacy, a landmark in Hendersonville that dates back to 1890. Mike's on Main preserves an air of nostalgia while serving up delicious food.

Step inside, the vintage soda fountain shop ambiance is as much a part of the dining experience as the food itself. The original pharmacy cabinets, antique soda fountain, and checkered floor all contribute to a unique, retro atmosphere that's both cozy, inviting and familiar to an older generation.

Mike's on Main's menu is not only delicious, but diverse as well, offering a range of items including soups, salads, and sandwiches. Where Mike's really shines is at breakfast. 

Breakfast standouts are the Breakfast specials, the breakfast Monte Cristo, and the biscuits and gravy. They even have my favorite, eggs and corn beef hash.

Patrons also rave about the salads, Patty Melt and milkshakes, which are touted as some of the best in town. Mike's even serves breakfast all day.

The staff at Mike's on Main adds to the overall experience with their expertise and friendly demeanor. They're locally known for creating a comfortable atmosphere, making each visitor feel welcome. 

Campfire Grill in Flat Rock

Located in Flat Rock, just a few minutes from Hendersonville, NC is Campfire Grill a rustic summer camp themed restaurant for those looking for great food, in a casual and friendly atmosphere. While there is definitely an array of menu options here, for those that love comfort food like we do, you won't be disappointed.

The restaurant was busy when we arrived, and we were happy to see that outdoor seating was available. Walking in, we found that the Campfire Grill feels like you're entering a rustic camp lodge, with wooden accents, cozy seating, and an overall ambiance of a summer camp. There are even photos and memorabilia from local summer camps all around the restaurant.

The weather was just gorgeous the day we visited for brunch, so we elected to sit outside.

The brunch menu was definitely different from the more traditional brunch menu options, and that is a good thing.  We found lots of delicious sounding brunch items and had a tough time deciding what to get.

For example, there was a traditional Eggs Benedict and Quiche, but also shrimp and grits, a bread pudding entrée, and even two different burgers. Of course, they have brunch drinks as well, including Mimosas and a Bloody Mary.

We elected to start off with the Smoked Fish Dip made from smoked Trout and Salmon. The dip was served with some brown butter saltine crackers that, when coupled with the dip were fantastic.

For entrees we went with the Shrimp and Grits and Apple Caramel Bread Pudding.   

The shrimp and grits is stone ground grits served with shrimp, bacon, mushrooms, green onions and parmesan. We're not sure how they seasoned it, but it was divine. One of the best shrimp and grits dishes I've had in our travels.

The highlight of our meal was the Apple Caramel Bread Pudding, absolutely fantastic. Hot and fresh bread pudding topped with cinnamon apples, caramel sauce, and whipped cream. 

We really enjoyed sitting outside, relaxing in the beautiful weather, and enjoying their delicious food.   

For those visiting the Hendersonville area, a trip to Campfire Grill in Flat Rock, NC, is well worth the short drive. Campfire Grill is a real hidden gem, with excellent food and service. 

Binion's Roadhouse

Looking for a great steak, with a little flavor of the Old West? Look no further than Binion's Roadhouse in Hendersonville, NC. Known for its hearty steaks, large portions, mouthwatering BBQ, and friendly, laid-back atmosphere. You can even throw the peanut shells on the floor, old-school style.

We were looking for a budget priced steak while visiting Hendersonville, and Binion's kept coming up from various locals, and received great reviews. So we gave them a try.

Binion's is hard to miss when passing through Hendersonville, NC. It literally looks like an old west town in the middle of the city. But it's just one big restaurant.

The Western theme is through the restaurant and includes large rustic woodon doors (complete with western pistol door knobs), lots of large wooden beams, vintage signs, cowboy memorabilia and even a few special items including: Popcorn Sutton's last moonshine still and the Carl Sanburg Oak.

Binion's delivers an above average and expected steak house experience. There's a bucket of peanuts on the table. You get hot yeast rolls and butter without asking, and the menu is full of different steak, chicken, burger and comfort food items.

The place was hopping, but we were seated quickly. We browsed the large menu, which included: 

• Steaks: Hand-cut and cooked to perfection, Binion's steaks are a highlight of the menu. The ribeye and filet mignon are particularly popular, known for their tenderness and rich, savory flavor.
• BBQ Ribs: Smoked low and slow, the BBQ ribs at Binion's are fall-off-the-bone delicious, smothered in a tangy, house-made BBQ sauce.
• Burgers and Sandwiches: Offering a variety of options, from the classic Binion's Burger to the hearty BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, these dishes are perfect for a casual lunch or dinner.
• Seafood: For those in the mood for seafood, the grilled salmon and fried shrimp platters are excellent choices, providing a fresh, flavorful alternative to the meat-heavy menu.

We started off with their fried pickles and ordered filets with steamed broccoli for our entrees. The yeast roles arrived and were huge with a bunch of rolls. They were delicious, and we had to really restrain ourselves from eating all of them.   

The fried pickles arrived shortly after, and the portion size was huge. Are you seeing a pattern here? Turns out, Binion's is well known for generous portions, and do they ever deliver.   We could only eat about half the order of friend pickles.

Our filet's arrived next, cooked exactly as we ordered, and were delicious, especially for the price.

Binion's Roadhouse certainly isn't a gourmet restaurant, nor do we think they try to be. They deliver great food, sizeable portions, all for a very reasonable price and with great service. All that is required for a fantastic dining experience.

Beech Alpen Restaurant

Beech Alpen Restaurant is a fantastic restaurant offering upscale dining options in a casual but nice atmosphere. They are one of the few sit down and order restaurants in Beech Mountain as well, with many other restaurants on our list being counter order only.

They have a full bar and a lovely outdoor deck that provides gorgeous views of Beech Mountain and the ski resort.  

It was cold and rainy the night we dined at Beech Alpen Restaurant, but even from inside the limited sunset view we had was stunning.

They serve up a mix of Italian and classic American cuisine such as steaks, seafood, pasta, burgers, and more. 

We dined here during our visit to Land of Oz in late September 2023. The entire building and restaurant were under construction. We seemed to be seated in a more temporary space, which was fine. We had good views of the deck and surrounding mountains.

We ordered the Calamari as an appetizer, and for entrees, the filet-mignon with crab meat, trout, and fettucini Alfredo with chicken. The food took a long time to come out, but overall was very good.   

We enjoyed our meal here, and would definitely come back. Alpen Restaurant was one of our favorite restaurants to eat at in Beech Mountain NC

Holy Smokes BBQ is in the Wild Wolf Lodge in Beech Mountain NC and has some of the very best BBQ we've ever had in various travels around North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Mountains.   

Holy Smokes is very casual, offering both indoor and outdoor dining. In fact, their back deck delivers some super nice long distance views! Tables are large family style picnic tables, with paper towels for napkins.

Simple and effective.

You'll place your order at the counter, find a seat, and they bring your food out to you. On your way to the table, be sure to grab one of their made daily house-made bbq sauces, including Sweet, Sweet Heat, Apple butter BBQ, Carolina Tangy Mustard, Eastern, Cheerwine Vinaigrette, and Sweetpotle.

Our personal favorites are the Sweet Heat, Apple butter and Cheerwine Vinaigrette. Soooo delicious.

They offer everything you would expect from a BBQ place like pulled pork, brisket, smoked sausage and smoked pulled chicken. They even have excellent burgers and subs as well.

They also offer a few unique items like street tacos, bbq bowls, and hot dogs as well.

The pulled pork and chicken is especially delicious, with a perfect combination of smoky flavor and savory taste.

Their sides were also top notch - their mac n cheese, coleslaw, and baked beans were all delicious. We would highly recommend Holy Smokes to anyone looking for some amazing BBQ in Beech Mountain!

Famous Brick Over Pizzeria not only serves up great pizza and food, but they also provide a great environment for families and kids.   

Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria has been an Italian staple in Beech Mountain NC for over twenty-five years and continues to provide quality meals with traditional recipes. They offer classic New York style pizzas and specialty pies like white pizza, vegetable pizza and steak pie.

All of their pizzas are made from hand-tossed dough that is seasoned with herbs for added flavor. They also have a wide selection of Italian favorites, like calzones, Stromboli, lasagna and ravioli. 

But there's more than just food at the Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria. The atmosphere is always family friendly and inviting with its large booth seats, bakery, arcade, mini-golf, and Mountaineer Adventure Tower.

If you're looking for great pizza in a family-fun place, Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria is the perfect place for you. One of our favorites when visiting Beech Mountain NC, you will not be disappointed.

Mile High Tavern

Mile High Tavern is a great place for drinks, snacks and a good burger with friends.  It's perfect for hanging out on a nice summer day, or after a snowy day on the ski slopes. 

They offer a large full bar with flavorful craft beers to classic cocktails. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, with a pool table, a jukebox, and plenty of barstools for enjoying conversation over drinks. 

Their menu at the time of our visit in September 2023 was only burgers and chicken sandwiches, however, they will add additional items. We waited a long time for our burgers, but they were actually really good and delivered to our table, hot with curly fries.

We really liked the outdoor seating area around the large firepit.

Fred's Backside Deli

Fred's Bakside Deli is located on the ground floor of Fred's General Store.  You can walk down the alley from the side parking area and through the back, or enter from some stairs in the store itself.

Fred's Bakside Deli serves breakfast and lunch.   You place your order, find a seat, and your food is brought out to you.

We've eaten breakfast here on a number of visits, and it's good.   They serve  egg plates, biscuits and gravy, breakfast burritos, waffles, and breakfast sandwiches.  They even have a few baked items like muffins and cinnamon buns.   Prices are very reasonable for breakfast items.

For lunch they offer burgers, sandwiches, soups, wraps and salads.

To set the stage, we enjoy casual dining, but in a more refined atmosphere. We like many types of food, but we especially like restaurants that offer unique dishes or a special take on southern favorites..

Vidalia - Our Top Pick

Vidalia in downtown Boone NC, checks all our boxes, making it our favorite choice for the best restaurants in Boone NC.    

Vidalia isn't huge, but not small either. The dining area is casual, yet airs a level of more sophisticated dining. There is a bar, and the kitchen is open, which we always appreciate. It's nice to see how the food is being prepared, and always enjoyable to watch the chefs perform their food magic.

We arrived for our reservations and only had to wait a few minutes for a table near the open kitchen area. Normally we prefer to sit at the bar, but chose a table this time so we could get some good food photos. Our server was excellent, providing suggestions and being available when needed, but not overbearing..

Drinks and Appetizers

We started off with a couple of their drink specials and the Nosh Plate as an appetizer. The Nosh Plate has 3 small bowls, one with lemon garlic hummus, one with in-house pimento cheese, and the third with house-smoked NC trout spread. On the side is grilled sourdough break, celery sticks, cucumber for dipping.

All three were fantastic, but that Trout Spread ... some of the best we've had, and we've had some amazing NC Trout spreads during our travels.

We munched on our Nosh plate, and fought over the Trout spread. We read over the menu, which is unique. Vidalia has many of your favorite comfort foods, but with their own unique twist, which we love. They also have some unique dishes as well.

Main Entrees

I'm a shrimp and grits fanatic, and if it's on the menu at a new restaurant, I almost always order it. I've tried many shrimp and grits dishes over the years and would consider myself a bit of a shrimp and grits expert.

Vidalia's Shrimp and Grits guilford grits with medium-sized shrimp. Smoked Tasso ham, mushrooms, spinach, and a white wine sauce with herbs and chili threads are in the bowl. The sauce in shrimp and grits is the deal breaker, and the creamy white wine pan sauce was really nice, with a wonderful flavor. The smoked Tasso ham really complimented the dish to both add texture and a smoky flavor. Overall, it was excellent and very fresh tasting.

Jenn ordered the Yellowfin Tuna, which is bonito flake and nori encrusted tuna, sriracha pork cracklins, pea flower infused heirloom Santee gold rice, sesame seaweed salad, muddy pond sorghum hoison sauce, sriracha yum yum sauce, and hoison caviar.  

The Yellowfin Tuna was a beautiful dish, and the pea flower made the rice blue, which made the dish look really colorful. If Sushi isn't your cup of tea, then this would not be dish for you, but if you love Sushi or rare fish like we do, this dish was delightful.

Dessert

They make their desserts in-house, and we had to try to them. We ordered the Banana Pudding, and chocolate torte. Both were fantastic. The Banana Pudding was unique with a presentation I've never seen before, but I loved it!   

Final Thoughts on Vidalia

Everything was excellent at Vidalia. The food is superb, and staff members are all friendly and hardworking. Local ingredients are so fresh and they are very charitable for local causes.

They offer a variety of small plate options, with something for everyone. The menu is constantly changing, offering new and inventive dishes each week. Vidalia has an extensive craft beer list that pairs perfectly with the unique flavors that their kitchen provides.

Mint Cuisine of India

We love Indian food. If you've never tried you, you really should. Out of all the Indian restaurants we've tried, Mint Cuisine in Boone NC is our favorite.. 

Mint Cuisine of India is located right off Highway 321 through Boone NC, and has a large dining room with indoor seating and a bar. The staff is professional and friendly, and the service is excellent. We are pretty sure we've never had a empty dish on the table for more than a minute.   

The menu is huge and they offer a ton of unique items, from appetizers, to entrees, and deserts. We enjoy many Indian dishes, from full vegetarian options to meat and seafood items. We've eaten enough Indian food over the years know our favorites and they are Tiki Masala Chicken and Paag Saneer.

Mint delivers on both staple Indian menu items in a big way, and they are both amazing.

Tiki Masala Chicken is a great Indian dish to start with if you're new to Indian food. To prepare Tiki Masala chicken, they roast and marinate chicken in a spicy sauce.. The sauce is usually creamy and orange-colored because of its tomato base and spices.  

The flavor is sweet with a spicy flavor, and spicy hot depending on your preference. We normally get ours mildly spicy, as Indian spice can be powerful and overwhelming for those not used to it.

Paag Saneer is blocks of Indian cheese cooked in a spinach sauce that reminds us of a lot of creamed spinach, but more spicy tasting and flavorful.

Mint makes both dishes exceptionally creamy with lots of intricate flavors that are absolutely delicious. We always order our food with Garlic Naan as well, one of the most wonderful breads we've ever had.  

If you like Indian food, try Mint Cuisine in Boone NC - We haven't found a better Indian restaurant yet.. 

Come Back Shack

Address: 1521 Blowing Rock Rd, Boone, NC 28607

Most of the restaurants on our list are fairly fancy, offering several unique menu items. Come Back Shack is not one of these restaurants. Come Back Shack is a no frills burger joint that absolutely nails excellent and fast burgers and fries.

It's our go to place for quick and good food when on the run.

What makes Come Back Shack unique is how you order and pick up your food. While there is staff working at the Come Back Shack, you'll hardly see them. You place your order and pay for it online, then run to the restaurant at the estimated time it will be ready to just pick it up. You can either go in and grab your food or go through the drive-through.

There is also limited seating in the dining area.

Come Back Shack uses natural beef, that is never frozen, and hand cut the fries.  They make all items to order and are hot and fresh. Even better? They make almost all their sauces and add-ons in-house, including cole slaw, dressings, pimento cheese, and more..

Our top menu picks are the bacon cheeseburger, fried green tomato burger with in-house pimento cheese, and Ahi Tuna sandwich.. We always get their fries as well. They also have excellent chicken sandwiches, salads, and chicken fingers as well.   

If you want fast food style food, that is fresh, and great tasting, Come Back Shack is the place to go. 

Melanie's on Howard

Address: 173 Howard St, Boone, NC 28607

We had breakfast at Melanie's for the first time during our most recent trip to Boone NC, based on some recommendations we received. This place is absolutely wonderful.

Melanie's is in downtown Boone, on Howard Street. They recently moved from King Street, where they were when we last visited.  

We arrived just as they opened on a Monday morning and parked right out front. Melanie's has both indoor and outdoor seating, and we sat outside on the patio, which was beautifully surrounded by a lovely flower garden. The tables are metal, with umbrella tops.

We started with some coffee, as we looked over the menu, which is full of yummy sounding breakfast and lunch items.    

After spending far too much time trying to decide what to order, we ended up choosing the Trucker's Breakfast and Stuffed French Toast. 

We enjoyed our hot coffee while watching downtown Boone wake-up and come alive. The restaurant staff served our breakfast really quickly, and the portions blew us away. The food looked delicious.

The stuffed French Toast was two large and thickly cut pieces of Stick Boys bread - If you haven't heard of Stick Boys, it's a highly rated local bakery. But back to the French toast, they generously spread the lovely purple raspberry cream cheese over the bread. They toped the dish with fresh fruit and a fruit puree, whip cream and powered sugar.  

The Trucker's Breakfast was very large as well, with homemade biscuits, sausage gravy, eggs, crumbled bacon, and cheese.   

Both were delicious, hot, and well above your normal breakfast fair in both taste and quantity. Melanie's has to be one of our favorite breakfast places we've ever eaten, and that's saying a lot.

You really can't go wrong with breakfast at Melanie's Food Fantasy. The staff was great, the atmosphere and outdoor seating were wonderful, and the food was in a category of its own.  

Melanie's takes some negative press for being pricy, and to be honest, we thought the same at first glance as well.

But after eating there, we're 100% ok with paying more for great food, especially with the amount you get. Definitely well worth the few extra dollars.

We'll be back and hope to try them for lunch on our next visit to Boone.

Over Yonder

UPDATE: Over Yonder has permanently closed since we published this article.

CLOSED - Over Yonder is a wonderful southern restaurant in an old historic home directly across from the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, NC. Just a few minutes outside of Boone.

We arrived early, browsed Mast General Store for a while, then headed ... ahem ... "over yonder" to grab some lunch.

They have a large gravel parking area, and both indoor and outdoor seating. The old home is gorgeous, with a big front porch with tables, and tables set out in the front yard as well.

The outdoor seating had a wait, so we sat inside, far back in the restaurant and next to an old fireplace at a two top table. Our server came out quickly, went over the specials with us, and headed out to grab some waters for us while we looked over the menu.

The menu isn't large, which we like, but full of interesting and good sounding items. We elected to start with the House-cut Rosemary Chips, which were superb. They seasoned it just enough for good flavor, without being over the top with Rosemary. The buttermilk ranch dressing on the side was excellent and made in-house. 

Choosing entrees was tough, as they had several really great sounding options on the lunch menu.   After some debating, we ended up ordering the Pork Burger and a daily special sandwich and we shared them.

The Pork Burger is a normal menu item and has apple butter, onion jam, napa almond slaw, house pickles, smoked gouda, and comes with house chips. The sandwich special was focaccia bread, with refresh tomatoes, spinach, and an aged cheddar pimento cheese.

Both were great, with lots of complex flavors. Jenn is not a cole slaw fan, so I tried it (remember, I love to try different coleslaw at restaurants). I wasn't a fan - it's not that it wasn't good; it was just not the type of slaw I prefer, and I'll admit, I'm picky with cole slaw.

Overall, the food was excellent, and the service was good as well. Definitely worth the short and beautiful drive from Boone to Over Yonder, and absolutely worth a stop if you visit the Mast General Store before or after.

Coyote Kitchen & Lost Cantina

Address: 200 Southgate Dr, Boone, NC 28607

The Coyote Kitchen & Lost Cantina is in the heart of Boone NC right off the main drag, and is a restaurant we've eaten at several times when visiting Boone. They serve a mix of foods, but specialize in Caribbean Soul Food.

We noticed a significant revision to the indoor portion of the restaurant during our most recent visit, which was surprising. The new layout was more roomy feeling, and offered a larger entry area, a new bar location, and more seating. 

Later on, we discovered the restaurant had new owners who made the changes and renamed it to Coyote Kitchen and Lost Cantina. Before it was just Coyote Kitchen.

Coyote Kitchen offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and when we arrived at 5 pm, there was already a 20-30 minute wait. We chose the first available and waited for about 30 minutes. The host/hostess seated us at a high-top two-top table near the bar and entrance area. Not our preference, but not a poor option either.

Our server promptly came over and headed out to get us some waters while we looked over the drink menu.  We ended up ordering a class of wine, a Margarita, and enjoyed sipping on those while looking over the extensive menu.

The Coyote Kitchen offers salads, burritos, tacos, burgers, bowls, boats, plates, and quesadillas. You can select the type of protein you prefer from different options and select your choice of salsa from several varieties as well. All delicious.

If you are vegetarian, vegan, or require gluten-free options, Coyote Kitchen has plenty of options for you.

We skipped on an appetizer, but had ordered the chips and salsa in the past. Their salsas are excellent, making this familiar and delicious option.

For entrees, we ordered a bowl and tacos. Their bowls are rice, with a protein, some toppings, and a sauce. Jenn ordered a bowl and I ordered the Coyote Tacos. Both entrees were great, with lots of mixed flavors and textures. Both had a little spice to them, but not too much, nor was it overbearing.

After finishing our entrees and drinks, we tried the triple chocolate cake. I'm not a huge chocolate cake fan, but the cake was pretty light and tasted fantastic.

Overall, we once again really enjoyed our meal at Coyote Kitchen. Their offerings are pretty unique for what we're used to in our small town of Waynesville, NC. We just don't have a Caribbean food in the area, so our meal was definitely a delightful treat for us.

Wild Craft

Address: 506 W King St, Boone, NC 28607

During one of our prior visits to Boone NC, for Tweetsie Railroad, a local recommended we try Wild Craft. We loved it. We wanted to eat there again during our most recent visit, but it didn't work out.   

Regardless, Wild Craft is one of our favorite restaurants in Boone NC. They are in the heart of downtown Boone NC, and deliver classic comfort food menu items from all over the United States.   Wild Craft is environmentally friendly and they source use local and fresh ingredients as much as they can.

We arrived at Wild Craft for our reservations around 5:30 pm. The small parking area was full, but we found a spot after circling and around a few times. A better option would be to park out on King Street and walk down.

They offer indoor and outdoor seating, and we sat indoors in their casual dining area. They offered us indoor and outdoor seating, but sat indoors in their casual dining area.

We started looking at the menu and the variety of food pleasantly surprised us. They offer American comfort food items, Asian options, and Mexican food options. They also feature local beef and other locally sourced ingredients.

We ended up ordering the Boonies Pot Pie, Baja Mahi tacos, and the Bolick Farms meatloaf.

The portions were large, but not overly so, and the food was delicious. We couldn't eat it all. Our stomachs were bursting;.

Overall, we really enjoyed our meal at Wild Craft, and loved how unique the menu was. If you are looking for something delicious and a little different, Wild Craft is the place!

Sunrise Grill

Address: 1675 NC-105, Boone, NC 28607

We visited the Sunset Grill for breakfast one morning on our recent trip to Boone NC. They are on the edge of town heading towards Valle Crucis on 105.  

Sunrise Grill isn't super fancy and seems to be a local hangout. Our breakfast was excellent, and they have many options to choose from, including daily specials.

We sipped coffee while looking at the breakfast menu that had many options, like omelettes, waffles, pancakes, sandwiches, and quiche. I love eggs benedict, and they have seven different styles of eggs benedict on their menu!

We ordered two of their specials, a vegetable and feta cheese omelet, and eggs benedict over corned beef hash.  Both came out pretty quickly and were very good. I particularly enjoyed the eggs benedict. 

The coffee and breakfast were very good. Sunrise Grill is a must-visit breakfast spot with a menu that has something for everyone in your group.

Daniel Boone Inn

I hesitate to include Daniel Boone Inn, and not because it isn't fantastic, but because every single "top restaurants in Boone NC" list includes it. But you really can't leave it out to be taken seriously.

 A visit to Daniel Boone Inn not only delivers a historic experience, but great food as well.   Let's be honest, eating there is almost a rite of passage for saying you really visited Boone NC as well.

This historic Inn serves break, lunch and dinner, family style. They cook and serve all of your classic southern favorites, just like at Grandma's house.

We've been wanting to visit for dinner, but just haven't made it there yet. We had breakfast there on one of many visits to the High Country and really enjoyed it. Not our favorite place, but it's definitely one of the best, and worth visiting for the experience.

The restaurant is large, and inside of the historic Inn. The staff dresses up in vintage era clothing and serves food family-style on large dishes. You can eat as much as you want.

 For breakfast, you'll get all the basics, like eggs, bacon, biscuits, gravy, stewed apples, pancakes, grits and more.  Oh, and did we mention Glazed Cinnamon Biscuits that are frankly out of this world good?

The restaurant walls are full of historic memorabilia from the days of Daniel Boone as well.   

A few very important items to be aware of when visiting:

1. They do not take reservations, and it's first come first serve.  It's a very popular place, so the line can be long.  So bring your patience.
2. They take cash only. That's right, no cards. There is an ATM in the lobby, but it charges a service fee.

Hatchet Coffee Roasters

It's a great place to start the day by yourself or with friends and family! Enjoy some of the best coffee around and they offer some delicious breakfast and snack items, too. They served all of this up in a clean cafe, with a large and open seating area. 

Hatchet Roasts their own speciality coffee locally, and it is absolutely delicious.

We visited one morning on our recent long weekend in Boone NC, ordered a couple of hot lattes, some avocado toast, and a breakfast burrito.

The avocado toast was huge, with an enormous piece of Stickyboy sourdough bread, covered with avocado, chili garlic sauce, sesame oil and lime.  

The breakfast burrito was vegan, with eggs, cheese, veggie sausage, and tater tots, wrapped up in a flour tortilla. It was delicious. I'm not a huge fan of most veggie sausage, but theirs was excellent, and honestly it was hard to tell the difference from the real thing.

Our Lattes were a traditional Vanilla Latte, and Jenn tried the Lavender Latte, which she absolutely loved. In fact she's still talking about it. The lattes were hot, creamy and not overly sweet.  

We relaxed, ate breakfast and enjoyed our lattes in the large open cafe area. We very much enjoyed Hatchet Coffee, and look forward to returning on our next trip to Boone NC. Highly recommend!

Appalachian Java

Appalachian Java is located in the heart of downtown Burnsville, and not only serves up excellent coffee, expresso drinks, and teas but also serves some fantastic sandwiches and other breakfast and lunch items.  

So don't let the name fool you, they are more than just coffee.

We've visited a few mornings for coffee and breakfast and have visited for lunch as well. The food was delicious, and the staff was very courteous.

For breakfast, they have a bunch of different options, including fresh baked goods, bagels, breakfast burritos and wraps, breakfast sandwiches, and breakfast plates. They also have an excellent yogurt parfait with granola and fresh fruit.

We love their coffees and have tried many of the various flavors during our visits. The Vanilla Latte is still out go to. We've also tried sweet and healthy options as well, including chocolate muffins, cinnamon buns, the parfait, and breakfast sandwiches. All very delicious!

On the lunch menu are various salads, and sandwiches, including a Chicken Melt, a Greek Grilled Cheese, and a gourmet Peanut Butter and Jelly. We went with the Greek Grilled Cheese and the Turkey Press. We shared the halves so we could both enjoy them.

They are a fantastic option in town for hot coffee, breakfast and lunch.

While waiting, we sat outside and enjoyed the warm sun while sipping on some cold drinks.  Our sandwiches came out freshly made and hot, in nice bakery boxes.   They were excellent, and not too heavy. 

Appalachian Java is a great little place, that is really convenient when exploring downtown Burnsville.  

Garden Deli

The Garden Deli is primarily a lunch spot, but on the weekends, they are a fantastic spot to grab some delicious food as well. They have a large selection of sandwiches, salads and soups.  

The Garden Deli is owned by the same husband and wife that also own Snap Dragon. Garden Deli is one of, if not the oldest, restaurant in Burnsville. The Garden Deli opened its doors in 1987, and has been serving up fantastic food in Burnsville ever since.   

Both Garden Deli and Snap Dragon offer fantastic food, but very different menus and atmospheres.   But more on Snap Dragon, one of our personal favorites, below.

The Garden Deli is located right at the town square in Burnsville. What we really liked about it, though, is that it's very private, even though it's right in the center of town. The outdoor seating area is surrounded by large shrubs that provide not only some wonderful shade but privacy as well.

Garden Deli offers both indoor and outdoor seating in a casual dining environment.  They have both a lunch and dinner menu, with different items.   We didn't eat there for lunch but heard from others it was very good.  

We had dinner there, and their dinner menu contains a number of interesting items, including salads, steaks, baby back ribs, shrimp, fish and more.  They also have dinner specials which change frequently.  

The evening we had dinner there, one of the specials was a lobster roll which we tried.  It was the best lobster roll we've had anywhere, no joke.  Definitely not what you would expect from a restaurant in a small mountain town.

We also had the Greek chicken plate, which was also excellent. The Garden Deli offers up a number of beer and wine options as well.

Overall, we really enjoyed dinner at the Garden Deli, and we would definitely eat there again. Our server Kaylee was super friendly and attentive as well.

Homeplace Beer Company

Homeplace Beer Company is a large brewery and restaurant located just outside of downtown Burnsville, and just down the road from the Terrell House Bed & Breakfast where we stayed for the weekend.

Homeplace Beer Company is a relatively new brewery, only open since 2018 but already making a name for itself in the local craft beer culture. They offer up a great selection of their own beers plus guest taps from other regional breweries. They also serve up food that pairs perfectly with their beers.

We've eaten and enjoyed some cold brews at Homeplace Brewery a few times during our visits to Burnsville.  

We've sampled several of their beers and ate lunch and dinner there as well. We enjoy sitting outside on the deck, which provides splendid views of the surrounding area and their live music stage.

The beer selection was great, with a variety of styles including IPAs, lagers, stouts, and more. Larry's favorite is the Mustang Oil Stoute.

The food is really good too! We've ordered several of their specialty wood-fired pizzas, the garlic knots,  and the wood-fired Jalapeno Poppers too.  

Both were delicious, and the perfect way to enjoy a good meal, and relax after a busy day. In fact, if you just want a relaxing place to chill, drink a cold beer, and catch some live music, Homeplace Beer is perfect.  

Definitely one of our favorites from our visit, and a place we look forward to visiting again.

Live Oak Gastropub - Recently Opened!

One of Burnsville’s newest restaurants—and already one of our favorites—is Live Oak Gastro Pub. Formerly located in Spruce Pine, they were forced to relocate after Hurricane Helene caused significant damage.

Their new space in Burnsville is beautiful, with stylish interior décor and a welcoming vibe that works just as well for a casual lunch as it does for a night out. Outside, there’s a great patio with gas heaters—perfect for cooler mountain days.

We visited for lunch with a group of seven, and everyone walked away impressed. We kicked things off with a Jalapeño Margarita and a round of appetizers: the Dirty South Deviled Eggs and Poke Nachos both hit the mark with bold flavors and eye-catching presentation. For our main dishes, the Blue Ridge Trout BLT stood out—crispy, fresh, and packed with local flavor and fried green tomatoes! And we couldn’t skip dessert: the Fudgery Bourbon Pecan Pie was rich, warm, and every bit as indulgent as it sounds.

What really stood out beyond the food was the hospitality. The owner took time to come out and chat with us, sharing some of the challenges they’ve faced after losing their previous restaurant. That personal touch, combined with the excellent food and service, made this one of the highlights of our visit.

Live Oak Gastro Pub is a welcome addition to Burnsville’s culinary scene. It’s one of those spots we’ll be coming back to again and again.

NuWray Restaurant - Recently Opened!

We had the chance to attend the NuWray Restaurant’s grand opening—and we were lucky enough to be part of their very first dinner service.

Dinner began out front, as the staff gathered around the large diner bell, cheering and celebrating as the dinner bell rang loudly for the first time in many years. The staff was pumped, excited and emotional.  It has been a long hard road getting the hotel and restaurant re-opened.

This new fine-dining addition to Burnsville delivers a truly elevated experience, and it’s easily one of the best meals we’ve had in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The dining room itself is elegant but not overly formal, with a warm, polished atmosphere that perfectly complements the historic character of the NuWray Hotel. Service was exceptional—attentive, friendly, and clearly passionate about creating a great guest experience. Recommended attire is “smart casual,” and while we did see a few jackets and dresses, we also saw folks in jeans—it’s refined, but still relaxed.

The food? Outstanding. 

We started with their house-made bread service, which was fresh, soft, topped with just the right amount of salt, and served with butter so good we almost asked for seconds. For entrees, we went with the market fish selection—Sheep’s Head served over perfectly cooked rice with Broccolini. We also tried the Filet Mignon, which was tender and flavorful with seasonal vegetables.

Others at our table (we were with a group) enjoyed the fried chicken and pork schnitzel with the NuWray's historic and signature cream gravy.

For dessert, our group shared two: a rich, layered chocolate cake and their playful spin on Baked Alaska called “Baked Burnsville.” It was just as fun and creative as it sounds.

If you are staying at the hotel, the restaurant also serves a breakfast buffet in the dining room each morning, which includes Cathead biscuits, NuWray's cream gravy, eggs, sausage, home fries, grits, fresh fruit, yogurt and more.  We also had the pleasure of enjoying their very first breakfast buffet service, and it was delicious. Again, the service was on point!

The NuWray Restaurant is setting a new standard for dining in Burnsville and we can't wait to go back.

Carriage House Sundries

The NuWray Hotel is a historic hotel and inn, and one of the oldest buildings in downtown Burnsville. The hotel opened in 1833 and was a stagecoach stopping point. The hotel is not only well known for its rooms, but for its food as well (See our feature on the NuWray restaurant above).

The hotel is now open after undergoing a complete restoration, including the installation of a full-service restaurant giving a healthy nod to NuWray's culinary history and regional traditions. The hotel and restaurant officially opened on 5/31/2025, and we were there.

Associated with the Nuwray Hotel is Carriage House Sundries. We visited about 2-months before the grand reo-opening on the hotel and the town of Burnsville.

"The Carriage House" is a mix of gourmet food store, cigar shop, winery, and restaurant. It's a place where you can hang out and enjoy a glass of wine or whiskey, or have a full meal. If you enjoy cigars, they have a large humidor with all of your favorites.  

It’s the kind of place where you want to slow down—whether you’re enjoying a meal or just having a drink.  Every corner feels intentional, from the lighting to the furniture to the soft music playing in the background. It’s not just a restaurant—it’s a full experience, and a gorgeous one at that.

Whether you're dining in or just stopping by for a treat and a peek, Carriage House Sundries is a standout for both its style and its inviting atmosphere and one of our favorite places to hang out in Burnsville.

Pig and Grits

From our visits to many different small mountain towns in the Blue Ridge Mountains, each town seems to have its own popular BBQ restaurant.   Burnsville NC is no different, and Pig and Grits is a staple.

Pig and Grits BBQ is located just down the road from the town square and has been serving up delicious, slow-cooked barbecue since 2014.  They are local, family-owned and pride themselves on their locally-sourced meats that are slow-cooked daily over hand-cut hickory.  This provides a wonderful simple, but rich and smoky flavor to their brisket, chicken, pulled pork, ribs, and turkey. 

They also offer up a number of different in-house-made barbecue sauces, which are regional in flavor and style.  Our favorites were the specialty sauces: Cherry Bourbon and Applewood Smoked BBQ.   

From their delicious brisket to their down-home sides, you can't go wrong with anything they serve!  We had a salad, smoked turkey, and a pulled pork BBQ plate.

If you like BBQ as we do, be sure to stop by and get your fill of barbecue goodness from Pig and Grits!  You won't be disappointed.  

Snap Dragon

Snap Dragon restaurant in downtown Burnsville offers a variety of Asian-infused dishes in a Maritime-themed bar and restaurant.  The Snap Dragon is next door to the Garden Deli, and while owned by the same owners, has a very different menu and atmosphere.

The menu is full of interesting items like: Topsail Fish Tacos, Calamari, Dragon Spring Rolls, and Cannon Balls.   The Cannon Balls are ground pork meatballs with a tangy sweet and sour sauce.  

You'll also find Thai market ribs, a spicy island burger, and a Habernero Cordon Blue sandwich.    We had heard from a few locals that the burgers at Snap Dragon were some of the best in town.   

We started off by trying their evening drink specials and the fried pickles as an appetizer.  The drinks were cold, fruity, and delicious, as were the fried pickles.  The batter was very light, and they weren't greasy at all, which was nice.   

For dinner, we ordered a burger and fish tacos and finished off our meal with a key lime pie and chocolate lava cake.

The food was excellent, served quickly, and hot.  We really enjoyed the small and intimate atmosphere with both indoor and outdoor seating and a large open bar area.  We were able to meet and talk with the owners as well, who are just super nice folks, and very proud of their restaurants and the heritage behind them.

While all of the restaurants were really good, if we had to pick one that was our favorite, it would be the Snap Dragon both for the unique food options, taste, and atmosphere.  Our server was also super friendly, upbeat, and excellent, which really helped.  

Snap Dragon is a must-try for anyone looking for something unique!
