Arriving at Devil's Bathtub

Getting to the Devil’s Bathtub trailhead feels remote, especially toward the end. As you arrive, you'll note a very large parking area and a gorgeous greenish-blue swimming hole next to it. This is not the main parking area, but the overflow parking area. We highly recommend stopping here, as it makes for some beautiful photos. During the summer, this is a popular swimming hole as well, and there are rope swings.

To get to the main parking area, turn left onto the dirt road directly across from the parking area and head up towards the trailhead. This stretch of road is gravel and can be rough. While 4-wheel drive and high clearance aren’t required, it can be helpful depending on conditions. It was in pretty good condition during our visit.

The Trailhead and Parking

Parking is the main lot is limited on busy days, and this hike has grown in popularity. During the summer and on weekends, arriving early in the day helps avoid crowded parking and heavier foot traffic on the trail.

If this lot is full, you'll need to park in the overflow parking area near the swimming hole. This adds 1-mile to the hike.

From the parking area, signage points you toward the Devil’s Fork Trail, which leads to Devil’s Bathtub. You'll head up a set of stairs, you can't miss it.

On the Trail: What to Expect

The hike starts with a climb up some stairs, and then a gradual descent from the parking area and quickly introduces you to the first of several creek crossings. Depending on recent rainfall, you may be able to rock-hop across some of them, but it’s common to get wet feet at least once. During our visit, we were able to rock hop all of the creeks, and never got wet. Your mileage may vary.

Much of the trail follows Devil’s Fork Creek, winding through a shaded hardwood forest. Expect exposed roots, rocky sections, and narrow footpaths that require steady footing. After rain, some sections can be slick, especially where water flows directly across the trail.

You will reach a split in the trail, where going left will take you on the shortest path to Devil's Bathtub, while going right will take you on the longer loop hike. We went left for the 4-mile round-trip out and back hike.

As you work your way deeper into the hike, the sound of rushing water stays with you almost the entire time. Even before reaching the bathtub, there are small cascades and pools along the creek that make this a scenic and enjoyable hike.

Near the end, the trail will go out onto the unique rock formations in this area, and you'll have to climb some rock to get up to the bathtub itself. The rock around the bathtub is smooth and can be slippery, so take your time and watch your footing.

The bathtub is a deep, circular basin carved into solid rock by centuries of moving water. On a hot summer day, the water is cold and incredibly refreshing, making it an ideal place to take a break before heading back out the way you came. The water has a unique greenish/blue hue that makes for some amazing photos with the right lighting.

We arrived at Devil's Bathtub around 4:30 in the afternoon on a summer evening. The lighting was not good. We suspect the best lighting for photos of the bathtub itself would be in the morning.

Tips for a Great Hike

After our amazing hike out to see the Devil's Bathtub, we learned a few tips that we think you'll find helpful:

• Wear shoes with good grip and expect wet conditions. Creek crossings are unavoidable.
• Bring plenty of water, especially in warmer months. The terrain makes this hike feel longer than the mileage suggests.
• Start early if hiking in summer or on weekends to avoid crowds and limited parking.  We hiked on a weekday and had the trail pretty much to ourselves.
• Take your time near the bathtub. Wet rock and smooth stone can be slick.
• Pack out everything you bring in to help keep this area clean and enjoyable for others.
• If you plan to swim, bringing a small towel and a change of clothes makes the hike back more comfortable.
• Check the weather and come prepared. There were storms in the area the day or our hike, but a low chance of rain. Of course, it rained right where we were hiking and we got soaked (see our video).  We recommend having a spare set of clothing in your vehicle, just in case.

Our Take

This hike ended up being one of those adventures that reminded us why certain places stay on our list for so long. Hiking Devil’s Bathtub in August turned it into a true summer adventure. The heat made the shaded forest and creek crossings especially welcome, and the cold water at the end felt like a well-earned reward.

We loved that this hike felt a little rugged without being overwhelming. The constant sound of water, the repeated crossings, and the final approach to the bathtub made it feel more immersive than many hikes of similar length. It’s not a trail you rush through, and that’s part of what makes it special.

Devil’s Bathtub isn’t a beginner hike, and it’s not one we’d recommend taking lightly. But if you’re comfortable with uneven terrain, wet conditions, and a bit of effort, it delivers a memorable payoff. For us, it absolutely lived up to the photos we’d seen for years, and it’s a hike we’re glad we finally made the time to experience.

Where is Rocky Mount, Virginia?

Rocky Mount is about 25 miles south of Roanoke, just off Highway 220 in Franklin County, Virginia. The drive down is beautiful, with rolling hills and farmland stretching out in every direction.

It’s an easy day trip from Roanoke — roughly a 35-minute drive — and a great stop if you’re exploring Smith Mountain Lake or heading to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Why Visit Rocky Mount?

Rocky Mount is one of those small towns that’s full of life but still keeps its relaxed, small-town feel. You’ll find a charming downtown area filled with local shops, restaurants, and music venues, and it’s home to the Harvester Performance Center, one of the best small music venues in the region.

It’s also known as the gateway to The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, a 300-mile driving route that celebrates the rich musical traditions of Appalachia. The trail begins right here in Rocky Mount and winds through the mountains of Southwest Virginia, connecting communities where bluegrass, old-time, and gospel music have deep roots. That musical heritage is still alive in Rocky Mount today, and you can feel it in the town’s culture, creativity, and friendly spirit.

Between the music, the history, and the small-town hospitality, Rocky Mount makes for an easy and rewarding getaway in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Things to Do in Rocky Mount, Virginia

For a small town, Rocky Mount really surprised us with how much there is to see and do.

The downtown area has a nice mix of local history, small shops, and friendly people, all surrounded by beautiful countryside that’s fun to explore. We spent the day seeing what Rocky Mount offered and came away really impressed with its character and the pride locals have in their community.

Explore Downtown Rocky Mount

We started our visit downtown at the Rocky Mount, VA Visitor Center, which is the perfect first stop. The staff were friendly and full of great information about the area — from where to eat to local history and things to do.

From there, we walked around downtown, checked out the historic buildings, and stopped into a few local shops. It’s a relaxed and enjoyable place to wander, and you really get that small-town Virginia feel.

Visit the Moonshine Explosion Museum

One of the most interesting places we stopped was the Moonshine Explosion Museum, located right downtown.  This interactive museum tells the story of Franklin County’s moonshine history — from Prohibition to modern-day craft distilling.

On July 11, 1930, a man claiming to be a "salesman" pulled into the building, which at the time was a mechanic's garage. He told the staff he was having car trouble. The mechanics wanted to let the car cool down before working on it, so they went home for dinner, planning to return later. While away, the car, which was carrying a full load of illegal moonshine, caught fire and caused an explosion that damaged the building and burned through the floor.

You can see the remnants of the explosion today, which were hidden behind brick walls until recently.

You’ll also see old stills, historic photos, and even a short film that brings the “moonshine capital of the world” story to life. The film is multi-media as well, with neat lighting and sound effects, and very well done.  

The museum is fun, educational, and a great way to understand how deeply moonshining shaped this region’s culture and people.

Hike at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park

After exploring downtown, we took a short drive out to Smith Mountain Lake State Park for a relaxing hike along the lake.

We stopped by the visitor and welcome center on the way in to get some information on the best trail for views of the lake.  The staff members there were very friendly, fun and helpful.  We enjoyed meeting and talking with them.  We also toured the exhibits and store they have there as well, and met "Bubba" a largemouth bass they have in a large aquairum - He has quite the personality and loves posing for photos. 

They recommended the Turtle Island Trail, which was a fantastic suggestion. The trail goes along the lake out to Turtle Island, which offers outstanding views. The island is the perfect spot to watch a sunset and see one of the Osprey nests. We even saw a few deer during our hike.

The trail was easy and scenic, winding through the woods with several great viewpoints over the water. It’s peaceful, quiet, and the perfect way to unwind after spending time in town.

Explore The Crooked Road

Rocky Mount marks The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, a 300-mile driving route that winds through Southwest Virginia celebrating the region’s deep Appalachian music roots. The trail connects towns and communities where traditional bluegrass, gospel, and old-time mountain music have been passed down through generations — often played on front porches, in general stores, and at Friday night jam sessions.

We didn’t have time to explore the entire route, but standing at the beginning of it in Rocky Mount gave us a real sense of connection to the area’s musical heritage.

The Crooked Road leads to some incredible stops, including The Floyd Country Store (home to the famous Friday Night Jamboree), the Blue Ridge Music Center near Galax with its excellent museum and summer concerts, and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol. Even if you just travel a short stretch, it’s a scenic drive full of history, culture, and that authentic Appalachian spirit that makes this region so special.

Where to Eat?

For a small community, Rocky Mount has a surprisingly good dining scene — from casual local hangouts to one of the best speakeasies we’ve ever visited anywhere in the Blue Ridge. Here are a few of the places we visited and really enjoyed during our trip.

Anastasia’s Speakeasy

We had dinner at Anastasia’s Speakeasy, and it turned out to be one of the coolest dining experiences we’ve ever had.

When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a small, nicely decorated room with stairs going up and a large vintage candy machine sitting against the wall. It took us literally a minute to figure out that the candy machine was actually a hidden door leading into the real speakeasy — how cool is that?

Inside, the room is dark and cozy, with no windows and full of period décor that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight back into the 1920s. We started off with a round of drinks — including one of their smoked old fashioneds. 

At Anastasia’s, they actually smoke the ice, which gives the drink a deep, lingering smoky flavor that’s unlike anything we’ve tried elsewhere.

For dinner, we ordered salads and pizza, and both were excellent. The food, drinks, and service were top-notch, and the entire experience was just plain fun.

Anastasia’s quickly became one of our favorite places — and honestly, it’s the best speakeasy we’ve visited anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Be sure to pay them a visit.

Rocky Mount Burger Company

We stopped in at Rocky Mount Burger Company for lunch — a laid-back, local bar and grill that’s a popular spot with both locals and visitors. It has a casual, friendly atmosphere, so we grabbed a couple of seats at the bar.

We started off with fried pickles, then ordered burgers along with a mixed drink and a local beer. They have a very large burger selection, as you would expect.

The food was good and the service was friendly, but overall, it’s a pretty simple place — the kind of spot where you can grab a decent meal and a drink without any fuss. Nothing fancy, just good, straightforward bar food and a relaxed vibe.

Olde Towne Social House

We stopped into Olde Towne Social House during our visit, not to eat, but to make our way through to the Moonshine Explosion Museum located downstairs. Still, we couldn’t help but take a few minutes to look around — and honestly, we wished we’d had more time to stay.

Olde Towne Social House is an elegant yet comfortable wine bar that serves food like small plates, charcuterie, sandwiches, and entrees. The décor is absolutely beautiful — vintage-style furniture, cozy couches, and intimate seating areas that make it the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine or enjoy a quiet meal.

It’s the kind of place you walk into and immediately want to come back to when you have more time. Next time we’re in Rocky Mount, it’s definitely on our list for lunch or dinner.

Where to Stay

If you decide to stay overnight in Rocky Mount, you’ll find a few great options — from historic inns to familiar hotels and cozy vacation rentals. The town is small, but its location near Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake makes it a convenient base for exploring more of Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Early Inn at the Grove
This beautiful 1850s-era Greek Revival home sits on a quiet stretch of land just outside downtown. It’s full of character, with large rooms, southern charm, and peaceful grounds shaded by huge old trees. If you’re looking for a boutique-style stay, this is the one.

Holiday Inn Express Rocky Mount
Located right off Highway 220, this is a solid, comfortable option with modern rooms and a great location close to everything in town. We often like to stay at Holiday Inn Express when we’re traveling — you know exactly what you’ll get, and it’s always clean, quiet, and convenient.

Vacation Rentals
If you prefer a more private or home-like stay, you’ll find a nice selection of vacation rentals in and around Rocky Mount, especially near Smith Mountain Lake. Cabins, cottages, and lakefront homes make for a peaceful stay surrounded by nature.

Whether you want a historic inn, a trusted hotel, or a quiet lakeside retreat, Rocky Mount has a little something for everyone.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Rocky Mount, a little preparation will help you make the most of your time here. It’s an easy town to explore, and most of what you’ll want to see is right downtown or just a short drive away. Here are a few tips based on our visit that’ll help you plan your own trip and experience some of the best the area has to offer.

• Start at the Visitor Center – It’s a great first stop. The staff are friendly and full of local knowledge about where to eat, what to see, and what events might be happening while you’re in town.
• Business Hours - Many of the restaurants and businesses don't open until 4pm - So plan around this - We spent most of the afternoon at Smith Mountain lake, so we could arrive back in town around 5pm.
• Plan at least a full day – Between exploring downtown, visiting the Moonshine Explosion Museum, hiking at Smith Mountain Lake, and grabbing a great meal, you can easily fill a day here.
• Check The Crooked Road map before your trip – Since the trail begins right in Rocky Mount, it’s worth planning a short drive along it to take in the scenery and Appalachian music heritage.  The Visitor Center has guides on the Crooked Road.
• Catch a show if you can – The Harvester Performance Center downtown often hosts big-name musicians in an intimate setting, and it’s one of the region’s best venues.
  
• Combine Rocky Mount with a visit to Roanoke or Smith Mountain Lake – Both are close by and make great additions to a Blue Ridge weekend getaway.

Where is Roanoke?

Roanoke sits in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, right along the Blue Ridge Parkway between mileposts 110 and 121. It’s the largest city directly on the Parkway, making it a natural base for exploring this iconic scenic road.

Getting here is easy. Roanoke is about 4 hours from Washington, D.C., 3.5 hours from Charlotte, NC; and just over 2.5 hours from Richmond, VA. If you don’t want to drive, the city is also served by Amtrak’s Northeast Regional line and the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport.

During our visit, we found Roanoke to be easy to navigate, with a walkable downtown and quick access to outdoor adventure just minutes away.

Why Visit?

Roanoke is a mountain city with something for just about everyone. For us, the highlight was the variety of things to do all within a short drive or walk. One morning we were sipping lattes at a local coffee shop, and later that same day we were standing on a mountain overlook with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge.

Here are a few reasons to put Roanoke on your travel list:

• Hiking and scenery – Iconic trails like McAfee Knob and Dragon’s Tooth are right outside the city.
• The Blue Ridge Parkway – Roanoke is perfectly positioned to explore one of America’s most scenic drives.
• Food and drink – From biscuits and brunch to craft beer and fine dining, Roanoke’s food scene really stood out on our visit.

One of the highlights of our long weekend in Roanoke was the food. The city has a surprisingly diverse restaurant scene for its size, and we only had time to sample a few. Every meal we had was excellent, and we left with a long list of places we want to try on our next visit.

In Roanoke, you’ll find everything from cozy breakfast spots and creative coffee shops to farm-to-table restaurants, authentic Italian dining, and lively breweries. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual lunch, an elegant dinner, or just a sweet treat with your coffee, Roanoke delivers.

Where to stay

When we visited Roanoke for our long weekend, we stayed at The Historic Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, and it was the perfect choice. The hotel is stunning, full of character and history, and located right in the center of everything. From the moment we checked in, we felt like we were stepping back in time, but with all the modern comforts you’d expect.

What we loved most was the convenience — we could walk across the pedestrian bridge straight into downtown Roanoke for dinner, coffee, and exploring. Yet the hotel itself felt like a retreat, with beautiful architecture, comfortable rooms, and plenty of charm. If you’re planning a trip to Roanoke, this is where we’d recommend staying.

Planning Your Visit

Having spent a long weekend in Roanoke, Jenn and I picked up a few tips that will make your visit smoother and more enjoyable.

• Best time to visit – Fall is hard to beat. The mountains around the city light up with color, and the view from the Roanoke Star in October is unforgettable. We visited in late summer, and it was hot during the day, but mornings and evenings were perfect for walking downtown and enjoying outdoor dining. Spring brings wildflowers and festivals, while winter offers a quieter vibe and holiday lights.

• How long to stay – We had three nights, which was just enough to experience downtown, enjoy some restaurants, and explore a bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We could have easily stayed a few more days to hike more of the bucket-list trails and check out more of the food scene. If you love hiking, plan on at least 3–4 full days.

• Where to stay – We stayed at the Historic Hotel Roanoke, and one of the best features is the pedestrian bridge that connects directly into downtown. It made exploring so much easier — instead of having to walk a much longer way around, we could just cross the bridge and be right in the heart of the restaurants and shops. That convenience, combined with the hotel’s history and comfort, made it the perfect home base for our trip.

• Getting around – Downtown Roanoke is very walkable, and we never had trouble finding parking when we did need to drive. You can also rent scooters and ebikes to get around as well.  If you’re planning to hike McAfee Knob or Dragon’s Tooth, start early — the trailheads get busy. The Blue Ridge Parkway is just minutes from downtown, so it’s easy to squeeze in a scenic drive even if you don’t have a full day.

• Pace yourself – Roanoke has more to do than you think. We tried to pack a lot in and still only scratched the surface. Plan a mix of activities — a hike in the morning, some downtime at a coffee shop, dinner downtown, then maybe a drive to the Roanoke Star at night. That balance worked really well for us.

Scrambled in Downtown Roanoke

Scrambled in downtown Roanoke turned out to be the perfect way to start our day. I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon and a hearty plate of biscuits and gravy, while Jenn went with scrambled eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit. Both of us enjoyed its rich, smooth coffee, which paired perfectly with breakfast on a rainy morning.

We sat outside on their covered patio, and even with the light rain, it was a cozy and relaxing spot to enjoy our meal. The service really stood out — friendly, attentive, and quick to make sure we had everything we needed. The food itself was excellent, especially the gravy on the biscuits. Their unique blend of black pepper and sage gave it a flavor that set it apart from other versions we’ve tried. Jenn’s fruit was also impressively fresh.

Scrambled is right in the heart of downtown Roanoke, and it’s exactly the kind of place we love to find when traveling — casual, welcoming, and serving up delicious comfort food with a local touch.

Food Hut RKE

Food Hut RKE is one of those hidden local gems that you almost stumble upon — and we discovered it during our Brews and Views e-bike tour.

While Jenn and I didn’t have time to order food ourselves, the couple riding with us did, and we quickly realized why this spot has such a strong reputation. He ordered their popular chicken sandwich, which is made with locally sourced chicken that’s brined in sweet tea. It smelled incredible, looked even better, and he said without hesitation it was one of the best chicken sandwiches he’s ever had.

We did get to sample their Zing Fries, and wow — these crispy fries are topped with house-made garlic butter, a zingy aioli, fresh parsley, and chives. They were hot, fresh, and packed with flavor, easily some of the best loaded fries we’ve tried anywhere.

Food Hut RKE is located inside Golden Cactus Brewing, which makes the experience even better. You can grab a craft beer, settle in at one of the big tables, and enjoy a casual, laid-back atmosphere surrounded by western-themed décor, pinball machines, and video games.

We ran out of time to come back and try more of their food during this trip, but it’s firmly at the top of our list for our next Roanoke visit.

Taaza Indian Cuisine

Taaza Indian Cuisine in Grandin Village had been recommended to us by our Brews and Views guide, and as big fans of Indian food, we couldn’t wait to try it. 

The restaurant was busy when we arrived, but we were seated right away at a high-top table in the back corner — our preferred spot. We started the evening with a glass of wine and an appetizer of roasted pappad served with mint and tamarind chutney. The pappad was crisp and flavorful, and both chutneys were excellent — fresh, tangy, and the perfect way to kick off the meal.

For our entrées, I ordered Saag Paneer with rice, and Jenn went with the classic Chicken Tikka Masala. Both dishes were served in very generous portions — so much that we couldn’t even finish them. The flavors were bold and delicious. We had asked for no spice, but the dishes still carried a bit of heat, just enough to enhance the flavor without overwhelming the meal. Everything tasted fresh and carefully prepared, and it was some of the best Indian food we’ve enjoyed anywhere in the Blue Ridge.

Taaza has a casual yet refined atmosphere with darker décor and lighting that gives it a cozy feel. Most guests were dressed casually, though some had dressed up a bit for dinner.

Parking in Grandin Village can be a little tricky — free spaces were all taken, but we easily found a spot in the pay lot right behind the restaurant. It only cost a couple of dollars for two hours, which was no issue at all.

Between the attentive service, the fantastic flavors, and the portion sizes, Taaza definitely ranks high on our list of Indian restaurants and is a must-visit when in Roanoke.

Breakfast buffet at the Hotel Roanoke

One of the unexpected highlights of our stay at The Hotel Roanoke was their incredible breakfast buffet. This spread is huge and covers just about every breakfast favorite you could imagine — scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, hashbrowns, grits, sticky buns, pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, and cereals. On top of that, they offer made-to-order omelets, along with fresh juices, hot coffee, and tea.

Jenn and I both went for omelets, paired with a mix of sides including bacon, fresh fruit, and crispy hashbrowns. Everything we tried was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the whole experience felt relaxed and enjoyable.

The dining room itself has a more formal look and feel, with classic décor that matches the historic charm of the hotel, but casual dress is perfectly acceptable. If you’re staying at The Hotel Roanoke, the breakfast buffet is not only convenient but absolutely worth taking advantage of. It’s a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring Roanoke.

Mrs B's in Buchannon Virginia

After our kayaking trip in Buchanan with Twin River Outfitters, we worked up quite an appetite. Locals — and Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge — both pointed us toward Mrs. B’s Restaurant, conveniently located right across the street. We grabbed a table out on the deck and settled in for a relaxing lunch.

To start, we ordered a couple of their seasonal strawberry drinks: a strawberry mojito and a strawberry margarita. Both were refreshing and the perfect way to cool off after being out on the river. For an appetizer, we tried the house-made pork rinds with pimento cheese. The rinds were made to order, arriving at the table hot and still crackling, and the pimento cheese was outstanding — creamy, with just the right amount of spice.

For lunch, I chose the strawberry and candied nut salad with honey bacon dressing, while Jenn went with the Italian sandwich. Both dishes were fresh, flavorful, and surprisingly elevated for such a small-town spot.

The casual atmosphere, friendly service, and the number of locals dining there made it feel like a true community hub. Mrs. B’s impressed us as one of the better small-town restaurants we’ve come across in our travels — a place we’d happily return to.

The Pine Room Bar at the Hotel Roanoke

The Pine Room restaurant in the Hotel Roanoke itself was closed for a private event the evening we planned to dine there, so we headed to the hotel’s bar instead. The food still came straight from The Pine Room kitchen, and it turned out to be a great choice.

We started with the Hearth Fired Bread, served with garlic oil, parsley, and marinara. It was essentially pizza dough, but light, airy, and absolutely delicious.

For dinner, Jenn ordered the Summer Berry Salad, while I went with a Caesar Salad topped with shrimp. We decided to keep things on the lighter side that night, but the menu offered plenty of tempting options — from flatbread pizzas and jerk chicken to a bone-in ribeye and their Smokehouse and smash burgers.

The bar itself is gorgeous, tucked just off the main entry and lobby. It was lively and busy each night of our stay, in part due to wedding events happening at the hotel. The bartenders were fantastic — friendly, attentive, and clearly skilled. The mixologist in particular was impressive, crafting unique cocktails that kept guests coming back for more.

Sweet Donkey Coffee

Sweet Donkey Coffee is a beautiful old home that’s been transformed into one of Roanoke’s most popular coffee shops, and it didn’t take us long to see why. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a casual, friendly vibe that makes it just as comfortable for hanging out as it is for grabbing a quick to-go order.

When we stopped by on a Sunday morning, the place was bustling with customers, both inside and out, but the service was still quick and cheerful.

The coffee here is excellent, with lots of unique house-made flavors. Jenn and I tried a lavender latte and a maple latte, and both were smooth, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. To go with our drinks, we enjoyed one of their in-house yogurt parfaits — yes, they even make their own yogurt — and a chocolate croissant. Both were fresh, delicious, and a perfect pairing with our lattes.

Sweet Donkey Coffee is one of those spots that feels like a true local hangout, and we loved our time there. It’s definitely a coffee shop we’ll return to on future visits, and one we’d recommend to anyone looking for a great cup of coffee in Roanoke.

Scratch Biscuit Company

Scratch Biscuit Company was high on our list for breakfast in Roanoke, and when we arrived, it was clear we weren’t the only ones with that idea. The line stretched out the door, and unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to wait it out. Still, after talking with locals and hearing from Visit Virginia’s Blue Ridge, we quickly learned why this little spot has such a big reputation.

Known for their fresh, made-from-scratch biscuits, the menu features a variety of hearty breakfast sandwiches and Southern favorites. Popular picks include the fried chicken biscuit, sausage and egg biscuit, and their country ham biscuit. They also offer rotating specials, along with sides like cheesy grits and crispy hashbrowns, making it a true comfort food stop for breakfast lovers.

The restaurant itself is small with limited seating, which adds to its cozy charm but also means it can fill up fast. On busy mornings, a to-go order might be the best way to enjoy their biscuits without the wait.

Scratch Biscuit Company is absolutely staying on our shortlist for a future visit, and next time we’ll be sure to carve out enough time to get in line and finally taste those famous biscuits for ourselves.

Explore Historic Grandin Village

Just a few minutes outside of downtown Roanoke, Grandin Village feels like stepping back in time while still enjoying a lively, modern neighborhood. This charming historic district is filled with locally owned shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and art, and it’s the perfect place to slow down and spend a few hours exploring.

Jenn and I loved simply walking the streets here, browsing storefronts, and soaking in the atmosphere. The centerpiece of Grandin Village is the Grandin Theatre, a beautifully restored historic movie house that has been entertaining Roanoke residents since 1932. Even if you don’t catch a film, it’s worth stepping inside to admire the vintage details and old-school charm.

As we wandered, we came across the Grandin Village Art Walk, where local artists have transformed the sidewalks and walls into a colorful open-air gallery. This creative energy is a big part of what makes Grandin feel so alive and welcoming.

We also ducked into Little Green Hive, a cozy local coffee shop right in the heart of Grandin Village. The atmosphere here is warm and inviting, and the coffee is wonderful. Their menu goes far beyond the basics — in addition to drip coffee and espresso, they feature a wide variety of specialty drinks, smoothies, and teas, many of them made with locally sourced ingredients.

We enjoyed sitting for a few minutes, sipping our drinks, and just soaking in the neighborhood’s energy before continuing our walk through Grandin Village. 

Throughout Grandin Village, you’ll also spot a number of lifelike bronze statues. One of the most moving is the “Angel of Grandin” by local sculptor Betty Branch. Located outside the Roanoke Co-Op grocery store, this sculpture depicts James Tarpley, a beloved community figure, sitting peacefully on a bench. The statue is so real-looking that Jenn and I both thought he was a real person until we got closer.

Grandin Village is more than just shops and restaurants — it’s a neighborhood with heart, history, and a creative spirit that makes it one of the most unique spots in Roanoke.

Explore Black Dog Salvage

Just a short drive from Grandin Village sits a well-known Roanoke destination — Black Dog Salvage. If you’ve ever seen the show Salvage Dawgs this is the home base. But even if you haven’t (like us), this massive warehouse filled with antiques, collectibles, and one-of-a-kind treasures is an absolute must-visit.

Walking through the doors, Jenn and I were immediately struck by just how huge the place is. Room after room, corner after corner, is packed with fascinating finds: architectural pieces, reclaimed wood, vintage fixtures, quirky art, and furniture you won’t see anywhere else. It’s the kind of place where you could easily spend hours and still feel like you’ve only scratched the surface.

The building itself is just as interesting as the items inside. Once a 1914 produce warehouse, it has been lovingly restored and still retains its character and charm. The stained glass windows scattered throughout are especially beautiful, casting colorful light into the space and reminding you of the history preserved here.

For anyone who loves antiques, architecture, or simply the thrill of discovering something unique, Black Dog Salvage is a place you won't soon forget. It’s more than shopping — it’s a full experience.

Visit the Virginia Museum of Transportation

Roanoke has always been a railroad town, and there’s no better place to experience that history than the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Located right in downtown Roanoke, this museum celebrates not only the city’s railroading heritage but also aviation, automobiles, and even boats.

Inside, you’ll find fascinating exhibits covering everything from vintage cars to model airplanes, but the real highlight — especially for me (Larry) — is the Railyard. Out back, the museum maintains an impressive collection of locomotives and rail cars, and you can walk right up to them, touch them, and even step inside some of them. It’s the kind of hands-on experience that makes you feel like a kid again.

I could have spent all day out there exploring. From massive diesel and electric engines to passenger and freight cars, the collection is incredible. The stars of the show are two legendary Norfolk & Western locomotives: the Class A 1218 steam engine and the J-Class 611 engine. Both are absolutely enormous, and standing next to them really gives you perspective on just how powerful these machines were. 

Beyond the trains, the museum also showcases classic cars, including some rare Virginia-made vehicles, as well as aviation exhibits that highlight the region’s role in flight. There’s even a section on boats, proving this museum truly covers all modes of transportation.

For anyone with even a passing interest in history, engineering, or travel, the Virginia Museum of Transportation is a must-see in Roanoke. But if you’re a train lover like me, set aside plenty of time — you’ll need it!

Roanoke Mountain Adventures Views and Brews E-Bike Tour

One highlight of our visit to Roanoke was joining the Views and Brews E-Bike Tour with Roanoke Mountain Adventures. If you’re looking for something fun, active, and unique during your time in the city, this is it.

We started off at the Roanoke Mountain Adventures building, where our local guide got us set up on e-bikes. These bikes are super easy to use — even if you’ve never ridden one before, you’ll feel comfortable in just a few minutes. Safety was a top priority, and our guide did a fantastic job making sure everyone felt confident before we headed out.

The ride begins along a flat and easy greenway that winds through the city. From there, we gradually climbed Mill Mountain. Thanks to the e-bikes, the climb was fun and surprisingly easy. We followed a trail that loops just below the famous Roanoke Star, where we were rewarded with sweeping, long-distance views over the city and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. It was the perfect spot to pause and take it all in.

After making our way back down the mountain, the adventure shifted gears (pun intended) as we pedaled through downtown Roanoke. Along the way, we stopped at two local favorites: Starr Hill Brewery and Golden Cactus Brewing. Both were lively, welcoming, and the perfect way to toast the ride and take a break.

The full tour lasts about three hours, and thanks to the pedal-assist bikes, it’s very doable for most fitness levels. Between the scenery, the great company, and the refreshing local brews, this experience was easily one of the most memorable parts of our Roanoke trip.

It’s also worth noting that Roanoke Mountain Adventures is much more than just guided bike tours. They sell and service bikes, and they also offer outdoor rentals and adventures on the Roanoke River, including kayaking, tubing, and paddleboarding. Whether you’re looking to ride, paddle, or just relax outside, they’re a fantastic local outfitter.

See the Roanoke Star

No trip to Roanoke is complete without a visit to Mill Mountain and the city’s most iconic landmark — the Roanoke Star. Perched high above downtown, this giant neon star has been shining since 1949 and is the largest freestanding illuminated man-made star in the world. It’s not just a symbol of Roanoke, it’s also one of the best spots in the region for sweeping views of the city and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

We made our way up Mill Mountain in the late afternoon and were treated to an incredible sunset over Roanoke. The overlook near the Star is the perfect vantage point, with long-distance views that stretch out over the valley and mountains beyond. As the sky darkened, we ventured back into town to watch the Star light up, casting its glow across the night sky. Of course, we had to grab a few photos before heading down the mountain.

Mill Mountain offers much more than just the Star. The mountaintop is also home to Mill Mountain Zoo, a family-friendly spot with animals from around the world, as well as a nature center and a fun playground for kids.

There are also several hiking and biking trails that wind through the wooded slopes of the mountain, connecting to the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway. Popular hikes include the Star Trail, which climbs from the base of the mountain up to the overlook, and the Mill Mountain Loop Trail, which circles through the forest for a quieter experience. We didn’t have time to hike them on this trip, but they’re definitely on our list for next time.

A quick tip: The Roanoke Star is a very popular spot, especially around sunset. Parking is limited and fills up fast, so plan to get there early if you want to secure a good spot without the hassle.

Indulge at Blue Cow Ice Cream

If you’re looking for a sweet treat in Roanoke, do yourself a favor and stop at Blue Cow Ice Cream. Located right at the base of Mill Mountain, it’s the perfect spot to visit before or after a trip to the Roanoke Star.

When we arrived, the place was bustling — and for good reason. The ice cream here is absolutely delicious, with both classic favorites and creative seasonal flavors that make it hard to choose just one. Jenn tried the Honey Lavender, which was creamy, floral, and refreshing, while I couldn’t get enough of the Sea Salt Brickle with Caramel Swirl.

Other popular flavors include Chocolate Brownie, Blue Cow Patty (cookies & cream), Lemon Poppyseed, and Coconut Almond Chip, along with rotating seasonal specialties. The variety makes it tempting to come back more than once just to try something new.

We grabbed our cups (they have waffle cones too) and headed out to the outdoor patio, which offers a nice view of Mill Mountain. 

Whether you’re an ice cream lover or just want something cool and refreshing after exploring Roanoke, Blue Cow is a can’t-miss stop.

Kayaking on the James River

Of all the adventures we had during our time in Roanoke, our favorite outdoor experience was kayaking down the James River. Just 30 minutes north of the city, the drive to Buchanan, Virginia, is well worth it for the chance to paddle this scenic and peaceful stretch of river.

Our trip was with Twin River Outfitters, a fantastic local outfitter that makes the whole experience easy and stress-free. After checking in at their shop, we changed into our river gear and attended a short but thorough safety briefing. The staff did a great job explaining what to expect, pointing out landmarks along the way, and emphasizing safety. They even provided maps, so we always knew where we were.

Once we were ready, we loaded onto a bus that shuttled us upriver to our launch point. From there, we hopped into our kayaks and began a leisurely paddle back down to Buchanan, a trip that took about three hours. Along the way, we soaked in gorgeous mountain views, enjoyed the calm stretches of the river, and even had some fun with a few light rapids that added a splash of excitement without being intimidating.

One of the best parts was that we never felt rushed. We took our time drifting downstream, stopping for photos, pulling off to the bank to grab a snack, and just enjoying the quiet beauty of the river. It was relaxing, fun, and the perfect way to spend an afternoon outdoors.

Twin River Outfitters provides everything you need for a comfortable and safe trip, including lockers, key storage, life preservers, and optional dry bags. We came prepared with our own dry bag for snacks, wallets, and gear, and wore bathing suits, water shirts, and water shoes, which worked out perfectly.

This trip was so much fun and is absolutely one we would do again. If you’re visiting Roanoke and want an easy, beginner-friendly outdoor adventure with stunning scenery, kayaking the James River with Twin River Outfitters should be at the very top of your list.

Explore Downtown Roanoke

After our kayaking adventure on the James River, we returned to our hotel, cleaned up, and set out to spend the evening exploring downtown Roanoke. The city has a wonderful energy, especially in the late afternoon and evening, and it’s the kind of place where you can easily stroll, shop, and discover new favorites.

Our first stop was Market Street, where we popped into several local shops. One of our favorites was chocolatepaper, a delightful little store that blends fine stationery and gifts with a decadent selection of chocolates. We picked up a few truffles to snack on, and some extras to bring home for our daughter — including chocolates imported from Dubai. 

Most of the shops downtown close around 5 p.m., so we made our way over to 202 Social House. With a couple of glasses of wine in hand, we sat outside and enjoyed the evening sights and sounds. Downtown was buzzing, especially along Campbell Avenue, with people out dining, walking, and enjoying the city’s lively vibe. 

We also recommend visiting The Crafteria, a market showcasing Appalachian-made goods and crafts — a perfect stop if you want to take a piece of the mountains home with you.

For those who enjoy local beer, downtown Roanoke has a thriving craft brewery scene. Three Notch’d Craft Kitchen & Brewery is known for pairing its beers with delicious food, while Twisted Track Brewpub and Big Lick Brewing Company each have their own unique vibe and rotating selections. We also heard great things about Olde Salem Brewing Co., which blends historic atmosphere with creative brews.

If nightlife is more your style, head to Six and Sky, a rooftop bar with sweeping city views, stylish cocktails, and a lively evening atmosphere. It’s a great way to cap off a night downtown while soaking in the Roanoke skyline.

During our visit, we really only touched the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more to see, taste, and experience downtown, and we’re already looking forward to returning to explore more of what Roanoke has to offer.

Insider Tip: If you plan on exploring downtown, start your visit earlier in the day to enjoy the shops before they close, then transition into the evening with dinner, breweries, and nightlife. That way, you’ll get the best of both worlds.

Take a Hike!

Roanoke sits in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, and the area is packed with incredible hiking opportunities. Some of the most famous trails in the state are just a short drive from downtown Roanoke

On our trip, we unfortunately didn’t have the time (or the right weather) to hike, but we made a list of trails that came highly recommended by the local outdoor enthusiasts we met. These will definitely be at the top of our list for our next visit:

• McAfee Knob - Perhaps the most iconic hike in Virginia, McAfee Knob is known for its dramatic rocky ledge that juts out over the Catawba Valley, offering sweeping 270-degree views. It’s one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail and a bucket-list hike for many.
• Dragon’s Tooth - Another legendary trail, Dragon’s Tooth is a challenging hike that rewards you with a jagged rock formation at the summit, resembling a giant set of stone fangs. The views from the top are just as impressive as the unique geology.
• Read Mountain Trail - A quieter option, this preserve is just outside of Roanoke and offers a moderate climb to Buzzards Rock, where hikers are rewarded with beautiful views over the Roanoke Valley.
• Roaring Run Falls - Perfect for a shorter, family-friendly outing, this trail leads to a series of cascading waterfalls and natural slides along Roaring Run Creek. It’s a scenic and refreshing option, especially on a warm day.

Even though we didn’t get to hike these trails this time, they’re all firmly on our short list for our next trip to Roanoke. If you love the outdoors, you’ll want to carve out time to experience at least one of these unforgettable hikes.

Visit nearby Rocky Mount, Virginia

If you have a little extra time during your trip to Roanoke, consider making the short drive south to Rocky Mount, Virginia. This small town may not be big, but it has plenty of character and makes for a fun side trip.

Rocky Mount is best known for its thriving music and arts scene. The Harvester Performance Center, located right in the heart of downtown, has become one of the premier music venues in the region, drawing in nationally known artists along with local talent. If you enjoy live music, it’s well worth checking their schedule before your visit.

The town also has a growing food and drink scene, with local breweries, coffee shops, and restaurants that make it easy to spend an afternoon exploring. The historic downtown is full of charm, with unique shops and architecture that give you a glimpse into the area’s history.

What is Natural Bridge?

Natural Bridge is more than a breathtaking geological wonder; it's also a Virginia State Park. Located in Rockbridge County, Virginia, the park and surrounding community has long welcomed visitors heading through the Shenandoah Valley and along what’s now the Blue Ridge Parkway corridor.

Cedar Creek carved natural Bridge over 500,000+ years stands 215 feet high and spans 90 feet, creating a massive stone arch that is beyond majestic. You just can't appreciate how big this historic natural structure really is without seeing it in person.  

Just beyond the state park, the community of Natural Bridge keeps its historic feel, with stone buildings, old inns, and a quiet, rural pace that reflects its 19th-century roots. While very small, the area is rich in history and surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful farmland.

The nearby hotel, once called the Natural Bridge Hotel, dates back to the early 1900s and still welcomes visitors today with mountain views and classic Southern charm.

Where is Natural Bridge?

Natural Bridge is located in Rockbridge County, in the western part of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. It sits just off US Route 11, about 15 miles south of Lexington, VA, and only a short drive from I-81 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We usually take I-81 and exit onto Route 130 (Natural Bridge exit), which weaves it's way through the Virginia mountains and delivers beautiful mountain scenery right before you arrive. The entrance to Natural Bridge State Park is clearly marked, with a large visitor center and plenty of parking available.

If you're travelling the Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Natural Bridge makes a great stop—it's only about 15 minutes from the Parkway exit at US-130 (MP 61.4), near the James River crossing.

What to Do at Natural Bridge

There’s more to Natural Bridge than just the bridge itself—though that alone is worth the trip.

The area offers a mix of scenic hikes, underground caverns, unique roadside attractions, and a solid gift shop that’s great for picking up a few keepsakes. 

Here are just some of the things to do when visiting Natural Bridge.

Walk to the Natural Bridge

After parking and checking in at the visitor's center, you’ll head down a short trail that begins at the entry way above.  The trail is short,but has 137 steps. You'll need to descend (there’s a shuttle available if needed) to reach Cedar Creek and the bridge area itself.

At the bottom of the stairs, you'll find a really beautiful water feature that is a small moss covered waterfall.

At the bottom of the stairs, you'll find the ticket area and main entrance. To visit Natural Bridge State Park, there's a per-person admission fee, which as of 2025 is:

• Adults (ages 13 and up): $9
• Children (ages 3–12): $6
• Children under 3: Free

After purchasing your admission ticket, you'll pass through a small plaza area with a gift shop, some picnic tables, and public restrooms. From here, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the Natural Bridge off in the distance—and the trail that takes you right to it.

Rounding the bend and seeing that massive stone arch rise through the trees early in the morning is one of those moments that sticks with you. 

We paused there for a good while, just soaking it all in—the soft rush of Cedar Creek, the crisp fall air, and the sunlight filtering through that towering rock span.

We also took a ton of photos, both from this vantage point, and after walking through Natural Bridge and looking back.

Hike the Trail to Lace Falls

After spending time at the bridge and enjoying the beauty of it, surrounded by morning light, we continued past the bridge and on up the trail that follows Cedar Creek. The visitors center told us that there was a nice waterfall at the end, called Lace Falls.

The trail to the falls is mostly flat and shaded, making for a relaxing stroll. The first area of interest is a creek crossing. We explored around the creek and taking some photos. A concrete bridge crosses the creek.

On up the trail, you'll come to a small side trail to the left that takes you to an old cave that was a Civil War saltpeter mine. Saltpeter is used to create gunpowder. You can't really go far into the cave, but it is interesting.

The trail really gives you a chance to enjoy the peaceful side of the park beyond the main attraction.

After about a mile, you'll reach the end of the trail, and the viewing area for the 30-foot Lace Falls. The waterfall is a good distance from the viewing area, and if you want to take photos, we suggest a zoom lens.

Lace Falls is located at the back of a small gorge like area. While the waterfall isn't super gorgeous, it makes for a nice walk.

You return the way you came.

Explore More of the Park’s Hiking Trails

While the walk along Cedar Creek to the Natural Bridge and Lace Falls is the most popular route, there’s far more hiking to enjoy in the surrounding park. Natural Bridge State Park offers about 10 miles of trails total, and if you’re up for a bit more adventure, it’s worth checking out the higher-elevation trails just a short drive from the Visitor Center.

Blue Ridge Trail

If you're in the mood for a moderate challenge, the Blue Ridge Trail is a solid pick. This 4-mile loop climbs through the woods and rewards you with sweeping views from Red Knob Overlook—a quiet, scenic spot that feels far removed from the crowds below. It’s a great way to stretch your legs and take in some mountain scenery.

The Skyline Trail

Another standout is the Skyline Trail, a 1.3-mile out-and-back route with a steady incline and a big payoff at Jefferson Point. The view here is wide open and panoramic, especially striking in the fall when the Blue Ridge Mountains are glowing with reds, oranges, and golds. 

Fall Colors and Visiting in October

We visited in mid-October, and the fall color was incredible. The hillsides around Natural Bridge were glowing with shades of gold, orange, and deep red. Temperatures were crisp, the skies were clear, and the park wasn’t overly crowded.

October is hands-down one of the best times to visit—not only for the colors, but for the peaceful vibe that comes with the season. Not to mention the cooler temperatures.

Where to Stay?

Our visit to Natural Bridge was part of a larger trip along the Virginia sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway. For more options on places to stay and eat, we stayed in Roanoke, Virginia, which is about 40 minutes from Natural Bridge.

Roanoke has several great options, including hotels, vacation rentals, inns, and airbnbs. We stayed at the Country Inn & Suites right off I-81. It was an affordable and nice hotel in a safe area.

As mentioned earlier, there is also a historic hotel at Natural Bridge that is a great option as well. The only downside is you will be further away from more dining options, shopping, and other city conveniences.

Our Tips for Visiting

To help you make the most of your visit to Natural Bridge, here are a few helpful tips we picked up during our visit:  

• Wear good shoes if you plan to walk to Lace Falls—the trail is easy but a bit rocky in places.
• Bring a water bottle and your camera—the views are photo-worthy throughout.
• If you visit in the fall, dress in layers. Mornings were chilly, but it warmed up quickly.
• Visit in the morning or late afternoon for fewer crowds. Midday is the busiest, especially on weekends. We went in the morning and had much of the trail to ourselves.
• Check seasonal hours and closures. The park is open year-round, but hours for the Visitor Center, caverns, and shuttle vary by season. It's a good idea to check the official website before you go.

Skyline Drive History

In 1924, plans were put together for a national park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The key feature was to be a "sky-line drive" that would provide views of the surrounding land.   

President Hoover, who owned a summer home in the area, started the construction of the road. Groundbreaking for the effort started in 1931. The road was completed in sections, with the last section being finished in 1939. As with many mountain projects, the Civilian Conservation Corps was significantly involved with the road's construction.

There are 4 access points for Skyline Drive Virginia:

• Near Rt. 66 and 340 Front Royal Entrance Station (Milepost 0)
• Rt. 211 at Thornton Gap Entrance Station
• Rt 33 Swift Run Gap Entrance Station

Where does Skyline Drive start and end?

The starting point of Skyline Drive is at Milepost 0 in Front Royal, Virginia, and it extends all the way to Milepost 105 near the end of Shenandoah National Park. At MP105, Skyline Drive meets the Northern most portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Rockfish Gap.

Travel Tips for Skyline Drive VA

We’ve been traveling Skyline Drive VA for many years and we’ve learned a few things and offer these Skyline Drive Travel Tips to help you enjoy your visit:

1. Take your time and don’t hurry. The Skyline drive speed limit is 35 MPH. Don’t speed! Many people are there to enjoy the views and will suddenly pull off or be driving very slow. If you speed, you could easily run into them or some of the wildlife around the Parkway. Take your time, go slow, and enjoy the views and journey.  
2. Weather–While traveling the parkway, you will often experience very thick fog and often rain. Be extra careful in these conditions. Turn on your headlights or even your flashers and slow down. We‘ve often been in conditions where you couldn’t see over 20-30 feet in front of your car! If you feel uncomfortable driving, pull over at an overlook and wait for the fog to clear up or thin out.
3. Fill’er Up! Make sure you have plenty of gas before you get on the Skyline Drive. There are areas where there are no gas stations for a bit.  
4. Bring layers of clothing. Due elevation changes, weather on the Skyline Drive can vary by location and time of day. It can also be sunny and warm one minute, then a few minutes later, cold and windy. We suggest layering if you plan to be outside at all, and this includes even getting out at overlooks which can often be cool and windy.
5. Pulling Over–Pulling over along the Skyline Drive is permitted unless signs say otherwise. Some of the best and unique views are available at locations other than the popular overlooks. Just make sure you pull completely off the parkway and make sure you can get back out. The sides of the parkway are often muddy, so make sure you don’t get stuck. If you have a 4-wheel drive, it’s always a good option.
6. Be prepared for crowds–The Skyline Drive is very popular, and often full of cars and people, especially in the Fall Season. Plan for extra time and be patient.   
7. RVs–RVs are allowed and welcome on the entire Skyline Drive, including pull along trailers. BUT make sure your RV isn’t taller than Marys Rock Tunnel, at 12 ft 8 in. Also, if you have traffic behind you that wants to go faster, please pull over.
8. Assume your cell phone will not work–Cell phone service along the Skyline Drive is spotty at best. Plan for your phone not working in most locations. If you require cell phone use, we would suggest getting off the Skyline Drive.
9. Camping–Camping is permitted on the Skyline Drive and in the Shenendoah National Park at designated campgrounds. You cannot, most times, just camp on the side of the road.  
10. Picnics and Food–Packing a picnic lunch and eating at one of the many scenic overlooks or picnic areas on The Parkway is a real treat and highly recommended. Just make sure you don’t leave any food or trash behind. Make sure that food is packed in air-tight containers if possible, especially if you plan to park and leave your car for any period.  There are bears, and they may break into your car to get to the food. 
11. Bring some water–Even if you aren’t planning on hiking, you might be tempted to want to walk out to one of the remote overlooks or down one of the shorter trails. Bring some water just in case.
12. Bicycles/Motorcycles–Bicycles and, of course, Motorcycles are both allowed on the Skyline Drive. On any day, you will often see many of both. Watch for them and when passing bicycles, please stay far behind them until you get to a good straight area to pass. Do not pass them on a turn.
13. Camera–Make sure you bring a camera. we can guarantee you that you’ll want to take pictures and plenty of them.

Skyline Drive Wildlife

While traveling on Skyline Drive, you may run into many of the animals the live in the Shenandoah Valley and travel on or cross Skyline Drive.   

These animals include: Black Bear, Deer, turkey, raccoons, rabbits, opossum, skunk, birds, red and gray fox, beaver, river otter, mink, weasel, woodchuck, squirrel, chipmunks and more! Be sure to keep an eye out for these animals, as they may dart out in front of you while driving. To better see the animals, pull off to the side, and remain in your vehicle to be extra safe.

Things to do on the Skyline Drive, by Milepost

Not only is Skyline Drive a beautiful and peaceful drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, it's also full of fun things to see and do. Here are just a few highlights!

Milepost 0 - Front Royal

Front Royal is a beautiful mountain town at Milepost 0 on Skyline Drive VA. In Front Royal are the popular and amazing Skyline Caverns. Skyline Caverns is the closest natural wonder to Washington, DC and makes for a great family destination that everyone will enjoy!

Milepost 4.6 - Dickey Ridge Visitor Center

Skyline Drive has four different visitor centers. Each offers amenities such as restrooms, information desks, exhibits, orientation movies, bookstores, publications, maps, backcountry permits, and first aid. Ranger led hikes are often done from these as well.

Milepost 22.2 - Matthews Arm Campground and Traces Trail

Traces Trail is a hike that follows around Mathews Arm Campground. Along the trail, you’ll discover historic traces left behind by former residents of the area. This 1.7-mile trail takes you through an oak forest that feels like a step back in time.

Milepost 31.5 Thornton Gap Entrance Station - Luray Caverns

Thorton Gap Entrance at 211 (Lee Highway) provides access to the town of Luray, and the largest caverns on the east coast, Luray Caverns. Luray Caverns is the most popular attraction in the Shenandoah Valley and Skyline Drive.

Milepost 42.7 - Stony Man parking area

This 1.6 mile round-trip and easy hike, which starts from the parking area, takes you to the cliffs of Stony Man’s summit–the second highest peak in the park at 4,011 feet.

Milepost 42.7 - Skyland Resort

Shenandoah National Park's largest lodging facility is at the highest point on Skyline Drive Virginia at 3,680 feet in elevation. Skyland Resort includes 178 units ranging from historic cabins to modern hotel rooms and suites. There is also a dining room, family-friendly entertainment, ranger guided programs, horseback riding and a conference hall.

Milepost 45.5 - Hawksbill Gap Parking Area and Hawksbill Loop Hike

The 2.9 mile round-trip and moderate hiking trail takes you on a loop hike and provides some fantastic vistas which are accessed via the Appalachian and Salamander trails.

Milepost 50.7 - Dark Hollow Falls

This is the shortest trail to a waterfall in Shenandoah National Forest. Dark Hollow Falls Trail is a 1.4-mile round-trip and a moderate trail takes you down a pretty steep descent to Dark Hollow Falls. The trail is steep, and very rocky.   

This is one of the most popular and well-traveled trails. The hike back up is challenging, so know your limits!

Milepost 51 - Harry F. Byrd, Sr. Visitor Center

Milepost 51.2 - Big Meadows Lodge

Big Meadows Lodge is a smaller lodge in Shenandoah National Park compared to Skyland Resort, having just 25 rooms and 72 cabins, suites and traditional rooms. The lodge has a dining room, family-friendly entertainment, guided ranger programs and a Visitor Center nearby.

Lewis Falls Trail starts here at the amphitheater parking area. The trail is a 3.3 mile and moderate hike down to Lewis Falls.

Milepost 56.4 - Bearfence Trail

This 1.4-mile round-trip hike takes you on a rock scramble up to the top with 360 degree views. If heights are not your thing, you'll want to skip this trail, and take the easier Bearfence Viewpoint hike.

Milepost 79.5 - Loft Mount Information Center
