The hike up is pretty rocky, and a bit steep.

The trail we'll follow to the left isn't Flat Laurel Creek Trail yet, but a connector trail from Sam's Knob Trail to Flat Laurel Creek Trail. The connector trail follows along the edge of the meadow for a bit, and then begins to decend down a rocky trail.

The trail narrows and becomes more and more rocky through this stretch. The trail here is also very eroded and often wet and muddy, so watch your footing. Good hiking poles are a real asset here for those with balance issues.

You'll soon pass through a popular camping area, with a creek to the right. Shortly following that, you'll cross through a swampy, bog area where not getting muddy and wet is a bit of a challenge. There is a really cool "frog pond" here to the left, that makes for some interesting photo opportunities.

Flat Laurel Creek Crossing

<div class="thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption"
Twin Falls is two pretty tall waterfalls, very close to each other. The Falls are pretty, and the hike out to them is one of the nicer hikes in Pisgah National Forest, but neither of them are very photogenic due to the amount of debris that has fallen around them. Regardless still a really nice waterfall hike, especially if you are hiking to see to Avery Creek Falls as well. The overall hike is 4 miles roundtrip.

Features: Waterfalls, Forest, nice and scenic backroads drive
Directions: From The Blue Ridge Parkway, take the NC Highway 276 exit at MP412.2. Take 276 South right at 4 miles, and turn left on FR477.
Hiking to Twin Falls on Henry Branch

The best place to start this hike is from the Avery Creek Trailhead on FR477, as this will allow you to visit Avery Creek Falls, which is .5 miles up the trail, then continue the additional 3.5 miles to Twin Falls. This allows you to see three waterfalls in one 4 mile roundtrip hike. This is an absolutely wonderful hike in the spring, due to this being an excellent wildflower area.

You can also start this hike at the Buckhorn Gap Trail trailhead, just a little ways from the Avery Creek Trailhead on FR477. Starting here will provide a view of Avery Creek Falls, but you won’t be able to easily access it.

If you started from Avery Creek Trailhead, continue up past Avery Creek Falls until you reach the junction with Buckhorn Gap Trail. Turn right here and cross Avery Creek. The blaze color for Buckhorn Gap Trail is orange. A horse trail will merge in from the right. Stay left and follow alongside the creek. The majority of the creek crossings with have both a horse ford/mountain bike crossing and then a nearby footbridge. We recommend using the footbridges to stay dry.

You’ll soon reach the junction of Twin Falls trail, which will head to the left and will have a yellow blaze. After turning on the trail, you’ll almost immediately cross Henry Branch. About 0.4 miles up the trail, a small path will lead to the left, and head up.

This 500′ path leads to a small waterfall, that really isn’t worth the hike up, unless it’s been raining. The small unnamed waterfall is typically mostly dry, with only a slow trickle. But, if there was a recent heavy rain or in the spring, it might be worth a look.

Continue on up Twin Falls Trail. After about 200 feet or so, you’ll reach a fairly large campsite. In the winter, with no foliage, you can see both of the falls in the distance. During other seasons, you should be able to hear them from here.

A small trail leads down from the campground to the left waterfall. There is another trail near the base, and close to the campground that takes you over to the right waterfall.

The waterfalls themselves are pretty, even more so after a heavy rain and during the spring when the water flow is heavy. Reaching the falls, and getting good photos is difficult due to the amount of debris that has fallen at the base and down the creek. Unfortunately, this will be here for a long time to come.

We did this hike in the summer and were unable to even get close to the left waterfall due to a large yellow jacket nest on up the scramble trail to the top.

At the top of the right side falls

You can reach the base of the right side waterfall, but the trail up is steep and narrow, so be very careful. Rocks at the top are also slick. The view from the bottom is a better photo spot anyway, for both of the waterfalls.

You’ll return to your car the same way you came up.

Hiking to Avery Creek Falls

From the Avery Creek Falls trailhead in Pisgah National Forest, which is blue blazed, begin your moderate descent down the trail, along a ridge. At about the .25 mile mark, you’ll reach a footbridge, and shortly after the trail will T. Head left, and follow the mostly flat trail for another .25 miles to Avery Creek Falls, which will be on your left – You can’t miss it. To get to the base of the falls, just to the left of Avery Creek Falls, is a small side scramble trail that decends steeply down the base.

Avery Creek Falls

Avery Creek Falls is a smaller waterfall that is short and wide. The cascade into the shallow pool below is about 10 feet. The waterfall itself is probably 30′ foot or so wide. Avery Creek Falls is very photogenic, and the areas below and above the falls provides many different viewing and photography angles.

This is a great short hike and waterfall for families with small children, as the shallow pool below the falls makes for a great wading area in the warmer summer months.

One of the unique features of this waterfall, that you’ll notice almost immediately is the spherical cut at the top left of the waterfall. This unique cut gives the waterfall character and makes you wonder what caused it.

Wash Hollow Falls is a very pretty a photogenic 50′ waterfall located off Highway 215 in Pisgah National Forest. Getting to the falls is a bit difficult, but not too bad for experienced hikers with proper hiking boots or shoes. Definitely worth the visit, and it’s only a short distance past Lower Sam Branch Falls.

Location: In Pisgah National Forest, off Highway 215 near The Blue Ridge Parkway

Hiking to Wash Hollow Falls

Wash Hollow Falls is just a short distance past Lower Sam Branch Falls. Follow the directions to Lower Sam Branch Falls. After Reaching Lower Sam Branch Falls, you’ll need to cross over the creek and pick up the trail on the other side to reach Wash Hollow Falls.

While the creek crossing isn’t difficult, it can be treacherous in the winter, and if water levels are high. The cascade to the left of the crossing isn’t really high, but high enough to injure you if you were to go over.

There are two places to cross, one is hopping down from a boulder near the base of Lower Sam Branch Falls, the other is too crossover just above the cascade. We chose to hop down off the boulder. This isn’t too difficult, especially if you have waterproof hiking boots or if you don’t mind getting a little wet. Getting back up here is a bit more difficult. When we go back, we’ll bring some climbing rope to help with this section.

The trail is immediately on the other side of the creek, and easily visible. Follow this trail through a small campground, for about 0.1 miles to reach Wash Hollow Falls.

Wash Hollow Falls

Wash Hollow Falls is a really gorgeous 50-foot waterfall, that starts as more of a water slide, and then cascades into a small pool below, followed by additional cascades further down.

The best place to take photos of Wash Hallow Falls is from below it, down the small creek a bit. If you walk back towards Lower Sam Branch Falls, you’ll see a scramble trail that goes down to the creek, just at the campsite area. Scramble down, and you’ll have the view below. Unfortunately, the time we visited, lighting conditions weren’t optimal. Early morning or late afternoon would be better.

Hiking to Lower Sam Branch Falls

From the Parking area on NC 215, walk back up 215 to the east end of the parking area. From there, you’ll see a short, but very steep “scramble” trail going up. Climb it, to reach an old logging road. This is the most difficult part of the hike. There are lots of roots and trees to grab onto here.

At the logging trail, go left and follow it to Lower Sam Branch Falls. The hike is short, about .25 files.

You’ll reach Lower Sam Branch Falls on some rocks across and above the falls. You can climb down the rocks for some for better views. When water levels are low it’s safe, but do not cross when water levels are high. There is a smaller waterfall just below where you’ll climb down, and slipping could result in being seriously injured.

Lower Sam Branch Falls

Lower Sam Branch Falls is a very pretty 15′ – 20′ waterfall, and well worth the visit, especially given the short hike off Highway 215. The Upper portion of the Falls is not visible from here.

There is somewhat of a trail going up to the upper portion, on the opposite side of Sam Branch, but we do not recommend hiking up to it. The upper portion is remote, and the hike very dangerous. One bad slip and you could be injured or killed, and nobody would find you.

The best views of the falls and optimal photo locations are on the opposite side of Sam Branch. The climb down is a bit tricky, so be careful. Again, cross only when water levels are down.

On the far side is a trail to Wash Hollow Falls, only a very short distance away. Immediately to the left is a small trail going down to a boulder, that provides an excellent view of the Falls.

Before reaching Lower Sam Branch Falls, there are a couple of scramble trails going down as well. These take you down below Lower Sam Branch Falls and offer some excellent photo opportunities, and a unique view of the Lower Sam Branch Falls. Just be careful, as these are not formal trails, and are steep. This is a beautiful area, and well worth the scramble down and up.
