Where is Rocky Mount, Virginia?

Rocky Mount is about 25 miles south of Roanoke, just off Highway 220 in Franklin County, Virginia. The drive down is beautiful, with rolling hills and farmland stretching out in every direction.

It’s an easy day trip from Roanoke — roughly a 35-minute drive — and a great stop if you’re exploring Smith Mountain Lake or heading to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Why Visit Rocky Mount?

Rocky Mount is one of those small towns that’s full of life but still keeps its relaxed, small-town feel. You’ll find a charming downtown area filled with local shops, restaurants, and music venues, and it’s home to the Harvester Performance Center, one of the best small music venues in the region.

It’s also known as the gateway to The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, a 300-mile driving route that celebrates the rich musical traditions of Appalachia. The trail begins right here in Rocky Mount and winds through the mountains of Southwest Virginia, connecting communities where bluegrass, old-time, and gospel music have deep roots. That musical heritage is still alive in Rocky Mount today, and you can feel it in the town’s culture, creativity, and friendly spirit.

Between the music, the history, and the small-town hospitality, Rocky Mount makes for an easy and rewarding getaway in Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Things to Do in Rocky Mount, Virginia

For a small town, Rocky Mount really surprised us with how much there is to see and do.

The downtown area has a nice mix of local history, small shops, and friendly people, all surrounded by beautiful countryside that’s fun to explore. We spent the day seeing what Rocky Mount offered and came away really impressed with its character and the pride locals have in their community.

We started our visit downtown at the Rocky Mount, VA Visitor Center, which is the perfect first stop. The staff were friendly and full of great information about the area — from where to eat to local history and things to do.

From there, we walked around downtown, checked out the historic buildings, and stopped into a few local shops. It’s a relaxed and enjoyable place to wander, and you really get that small-town Virginia feel.

Visit the Moonshine Explosion Museum

One of the most interesting places we stopped was the Moonshine Explosion Museum, located right downtown.  This interactive museum tells the story of Franklin County’s moonshine history — from Prohibition to modern-day craft distilling.

On July 11, 1930, a man claiming to be a "salesman" pulled into the building, which at the time was a mechanic's garage. He told the staff he was having car trouble. The mechanics wanted to let the car cool down before working on it, so they went home for dinner, planning to return later. While away, the car, which was carrying a full load of illegal moonshine, caught fire and caused an explosion that damaged the building and burned through the floor.

You can see the remnants of the explosion today, which were hidden behind brick walls until recently.

You’ll also see old stills, historic photos, and even a short film that brings the “moonshine capital of the world” story to life. The film is multi-media as well, with neat lighting and sound effects, and very well done.  

The museum is fun, educational, and a great way to understand how deeply moonshining shaped this region’s culture and people.

Hike at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park

After exploring downtown, we took a short drive out to Smith Mountain Lake State Park for a relaxing hike along the lake.

We stopped by the visitor and welcome center on the way in to get some information on the best trail for views of the lake.  The staff members there were very friendly, fun and helpful.  We enjoyed meeting and talking with them.  We also toured the exhibits and store they have there as well, and met "Bubba" a largemouth bass they have in a large aquairum - He has quite the personality and loves posing for photos. 

They recommended the Turtle Island Trail, which was a fantastic suggestion. The trail goes along the lake out to Turtle Island, which offers outstanding views. The island is the perfect spot to watch a sunset and see one of the Osprey nests. We even saw a few deer during our hike.

The trail was easy and scenic, winding through the woods with several great viewpoints over the water. It’s peaceful, quiet, and the perfect way to unwind after spending time in town.

Explore The Crooked Road

Rocky Mount marks The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, a 300-mile driving route that winds through Southwest Virginia celebrating the region’s deep Appalachian music roots. The trail connects towns and communities where traditional bluegrass, gospel, and old-time mountain music have been passed down through generations — often played on front porches, in general stores, and at Friday night jam sessions.

We didn’t have time to explore the entire route, but standing at the beginning of it in Rocky Mount gave us a real sense of connection to the area’s musical heritage.

The Crooked Road leads to some incredible stops, including The Floyd Country Store (home to the famous Friday Night Jamboree), the Blue Ridge Music Center near Galax with its excellent museum and summer concerts, and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum in Bristol. Even if you just travel a short stretch, it’s a scenic drive full of history, culture, and that authentic Appalachian spirit that makes this region so special.

Where to Eat?

For a small community, Rocky Mount has a surprisingly good dining scene — from casual local hangouts to one of the best speakeasies we’ve ever visited anywhere in the Blue Ridge. Here are a few of the places we visited and really enjoyed during our trip.

Anastasia’s Speakeasy

We had dinner at Anastasia’s Speakeasy, and it turned out to be one of the coolest dining experiences we’ve ever had.

When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a small, nicely decorated room with stairs going up and a large vintage candy machine sitting against the wall. It took us literally a minute to figure out that the candy machine was actually a hidden door leading into the real speakeasy — how cool is that?

Inside, the room is dark and cozy, with no windows and full of period décor that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight back into the 1920s. We started off with a round of drinks — including one of their smoked old fashioneds. 

At Anastasia’s, they actually smoke the ice, which gives the drink a deep, lingering smoky flavor that’s unlike anything we’ve tried elsewhere.

For dinner, we ordered salads and pizza, and both were excellent. The food, drinks, and service were top-notch, and the entire experience was just plain fun.

Anastasia’s quickly became one of our favorite places — and honestly, it’s the best speakeasy we’ve visited anywhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Be sure to pay them a visit.

Rocky Mount Burger Company

We stopped in at Rocky Mount Burger Company for lunch — a laid-back, local bar and grill that’s a popular spot with both locals and visitors. It has a casual, friendly atmosphere, so we grabbed a couple of seats at the bar.

We started off with fried pickles, then ordered burgers along with a mixed drink and a local beer. They have a very large burger selection, as you would expect.

The food was good and the service was friendly, but overall, it’s a pretty simple place — the kind of spot where you can grab a decent meal and a drink without any fuss. Nothing fancy, just good, straightforward bar food and a relaxed vibe.

Olde Towne Social House

We stopped into Olde Towne Social House during our visit, not to eat, but to make our way through to the Moonshine Explosion Museum located downstairs. Still, we couldn’t help but take a few minutes to look around — and honestly, we wished we’d had more time to stay.

Olde Towne Social House is an elegant yet comfortable wine bar that serves food like small plates, charcuterie, sandwiches, and entrees. The décor is absolutely beautiful — vintage-style furniture, cozy couches, and intimate seating areas that make it the perfect place to relax with a glass of wine or enjoy a quiet meal.

It’s the kind of place you walk into and immediately want to come back to when you have more time. Next time we’re in Rocky Mount, it’s definitely on our list for lunch or dinner.

Where to Stay

If you decide to stay overnight in Rocky Mount, you’ll find a few great options — from historic inns to familiar hotels and cozy vacation rentals. The town is small, but its location near Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake makes it a convenient base for exploring more of Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Early Inn at the Grove
This beautiful 1850s-era Greek Revival home sits on a quiet stretch of land just outside downtown. It’s full of character, with large rooms, southern charm, and peaceful grounds shaded by huge old trees. If you’re looking for a boutique-style stay, this is the one.

Holiday Inn Express Rocky Mount
Located right off Highway 220, this is a solid, comfortable option with modern rooms and a great location close to everything in town. We often like to stay at Holiday Inn Express when we’re traveling — you know exactly what you’ll get, and it’s always clean, quiet, and convenient.

Vacation Rentals
If you prefer a more private or home-like stay, you’ll find a nice selection of vacation rentals in and around Rocky Mount, especially near Smith Mountain Lake. Cabins, cottages, and lakefront homes make for a peaceful stay surrounded by nature.

Whether you want a historic inn, a trusted hotel, or a quiet lakeside retreat, Rocky Mount has a little something for everyone.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Rocky Mount, a little preparation will help you make the most of your time here. It’s an easy town to explore, and most of what you’ll want to see is right downtown or just a short drive away. Here are a few tips based on our visit that’ll help you plan your own trip and experience some of the best the area has to offer.

• Start at the Visitor Center – It’s a great first stop. The staff are friendly and full of local knowledge about where to eat, what to see, and what events might be happening while you’re in town.
• Business Hours - Many of the restaurants and businesses don't open until 4pm - So plan around this - We spent most of the afternoon at Smith Mountain lake, so we could arrive back in town around 5pm.
• Plan at least a full day – Between exploring downtown, visiting the Moonshine Explosion Museum, hiking at Smith Mountain Lake, and grabbing a great meal, you can easily fill a day here.
• Check The Crooked Road map before your trip – Since the trail begins right in Rocky Mount, it’s worth planning a short drive along it to take in the scenery and Appalachian music heritage.  The Visitor Center has guides on the Crooked Road.
• Catch a show if you can – The Harvester Performance Center downtown often hosts big-name musicians in an intimate setting, and it’s one of the region’s best venues.
  
• Combine Rocky Mount with a visit to Roanoke or Smith Mountain Lake – Both are close by and make great additions to a Blue Ridge weekend getaway.

Where is Wilkesboro?

Wilkesboro is located in northwestern North Carolina along US-421, about 30 minutes south of Boone and just over an hour northwest of Winston-Salem. The Yadkin River separates Wilkesboro from its sister city, North Wilkesboro, and together they make up what locals call “The Wilkesboros.”

Downtown Wilkesboro is easy to reach and simple to explore, with most attractions, restaurants, and shops within a short walk of one another. The town’s small-scale layout makes it ideal for a relaxed weekend visit — you can park once and spend the day discovering its historic buildings, local businesses, and friendly community atmosphere.

Why Visit?

Wilkesboro blends outdoor fun, real Appalachian history, and a friendly downtown that just keeps getting better the more you explore. A few reasons we think it’s worth a trip:

• Outdoor access that’s actually close — lake, trails, river, and bike parks within a short drive
• Deep musical roots and festival energy throughout the year
• A walkable downtown with independent shops, public art, and family-friendly events
• Easy hop to Boone/Blowing Rock while paying far less for lodging and food
• Great restaurants, bars, coffee shops and more.

Things to Do

Most of the best things to do in Wilkesboro are centered right around downtown. The area is walkable, welcoming, and full of character, with restored historic buildings, local shops, and plenty of spots to relax and explore.

During our visit, we toured the Wilkes Heritage Museum and the Historic Wilkes County Jail, both offering a fascinating look at the town’s past and the people who helped shape it. The museum complex alone is worth the stop — it’s packed with local history, exhibits, and even a few surprises.

Downtown Wilkesboro is also home to a growing collection of boutiques, antique stores, and galleries. We enjoyed visiting several different shops with clothing, home decor, gifts, and of course, southern charm. You’ll also find a few great antique stores and locally owned shops scattered around Main Street that are perfect for browsing.

Throughout the year, downtown comes alive with events, festivals, and live music.

Where to Stay

Our Pick

During our visit, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Wilkesboro, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The rooms were clean, quiet, and comfortable; the staff was friendly; and the location made it easy to get around town.

They have an outdoor pool, full exercise room, and complimentary breakfast. We’d definitely stay here again on a future visit.

Other Options

Wilkesboro also has a few other solid hotel options, including the Hampton Inn Wilkesboro and Quality Inn & Suites, both close to dining and shopping along US-421.

If you prefer more space or a home-like stay, there are also vacation rentals available in and around Wilkesboro and nearby North Wilkesboro. These range from small in-town apartments to cozy countryside cabins just a few minutes from downtown.

Planning Your Visit

Best time to visit

Spring brings wildflowers and comfortable temps for hiking and biking. Summer is prime for the lake and river. Fall delivers orchard season and color in the nearby mountains, with easy day trips up to the Boone area. Winter is quieter and a good time for budget travelers.

How long to stay

A weekend covers downtown, the museum/jail, a lake day, and a couple of meals out. Add a third night if you want more trail or outdoor time.

Getting around

Parking in Wilkesboro is easy and free throughout downtown. Most of what you’ll want to see is close together, so you can park once and explore on foot. The streets are walkable, and it’s a pleasant area to spend a few hours visiting shops, restaurants, and historic sites. If you’re venturing beyond downtown or visiting both Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro, everything is only a short drive apart.

Where is Roanoke?

Roanoke sits in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, right along the Blue Ridge Parkway between mileposts 110 and 121. It’s the largest city directly on the Parkway, making it a natural base for exploring this iconic scenic road.

Getting here is easy. Roanoke is about 4 hours from Washington, D.C., 3.5 hours from Charlotte, NC; and just over 2.5 hours from Richmond, VA. If you don’t want to drive, the city is also served by Amtrak’s Northeast Regional line and the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport.

During our visit, we found Roanoke to be easy to navigate, with a walkable downtown and quick access to outdoor adventure just minutes away.

Why Visit?

Roanoke is a mountain city with something for just about everyone. For us, the highlight was the variety of things to do all within a short drive or walk. One morning we were sipping lattes at a local coffee shop, and later that same day we were standing on a mountain overlook with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge.

Here are a few reasons to put Roanoke on your travel list:

• Hiking and scenery – Iconic trails like McAfee Knob and Dragon’s Tooth are right outside the city.
• The Blue Ridge Parkway – Roanoke is perfectly positioned to explore one of America’s most scenic drives.
• Food and drink – From biscuits and brunch to craft beer and fine dining, Roanoke’s food scene really stood out on our visit.

We only had a long weekend to explore, but we packed in a lot and still left wishing we had more time. Roanoke is one of those places where you can fill your days with outdoor adventure and still enjoy evenings downtown.

One of the highlights of our long weekend in Roanoke was the food. The city has a surprisingly diverse restaurant scene for its size, and we only had time to sample a few. Every meal we had was excellent, and we left with a long list of places we want to try on our next visit.

In Roanoke, you’ll find everything from cozy breakfast spots and creative coffee shops to farm-to-table restaurants, authentic Italian dining, and lively breweries. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual lunch, an elegant dinner, or just a sweet treat with your coffee, Roanoke delivers.

Where to stay

When we visited Roanoke for our long weekend, we stayed at The Historic Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, and it was the perfect choice. The hotel is stunning, full of character and history, and located right in the center of everything. From the moment we checked in, we felt like we were stepping back in time, but with all the modern comforts you’d expect.

What we loved most was the convenience — we could walk across the pedestrian bridge straight into downtown Roanoke for dinner, coffee, and exploring. Yet the hotel itself felt like a retreat, with beautiful architecture, comfortable rooms, and plenty of charm. If you’re planning a trip to Roanoke, this is where we’d recommend staying.

Planning Your Visit

Having spent a long weekend in Roanoke, Jenn and I picked up a few tips that will make your visit smoother and more enjoyable.

• Best time to visit – Fall is hard to beat. The mountains around the city light up with color, and the view from the Roanoke Star in October is unforgettable. We visited in late summer, and it was hot during the day, but mornings and evenings were perfect for walking downtown and enjoying outdoor dining. Spring brings wildflowers and festivals, while winter offers a quieter vibe and holiday lights.

• How long to stay – We had three nights, which was just enough to experience downtown, enjoy some restaurants, and explore a bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway. We could have easily stayed a few more days to hike more of the bucket-list trails and check out more of the food scene. If you love hiking, plan on at least 3–4 full days.

• Where to stay – We stayed at the Historic Hotel Roanoke, and one of the best features is the pedestrian bridge that connects directly into downtown. It made exploring so much easier — instead of having to walk a much longer way around, we could just cross the bridge and be right in the heart of the restaurants and shops. That convenience, combined with the hotel’s history and comfort, made it the perfect home base for our trip.

• Getting around – Downtown Roanoke is very walkable, and we never had trouble finding parking when we did need to drive. You can also rent scooters and ebikes to get around as well.  If you’re planning to hike McAfee Knob or Dragon’s Tooth, start early — the trailheads get busy. The Blue Ridge Parkway is just minutes from downtown, so it’s easy to squeeze in a scenic drive even if you don’t have a full day.

• Pace yourself – Roanoke has more to do than you think. We tried to pack a lot in and still only scratched the surface. Plan a mix of activities — a hike in the morning, some downtime at a coffee shop, dinner downtown, then maybe a drive to the Roanoke Star at night. That balance worked really well for us.

 During one of our recent visits, we spent a few days soaking in everything Old Fort and McDowell County has to offer: local restaurants, historic sites, beautiful hikes, and plenty of mountain scenery.

Where is Old Fort, NC?

Old Fort is located just off I-40 at exit 73 in Western North Carolina. It's one of the last exits before making the climb up Black Mountain when heading east towards Asheville, NC. Old Fort is about 2 hours from both Charlotte and Winston- Salem NC, less than 30 minutes from Asheville, NC, and only 10 minutes away from Black Mountain.

This quaint and historic railroad town is part of McDowell County, which includes Marion, Little Switerland, and the popular Lake James.

The main downtown area is so close to I-40 that it is visible when passing by the exit. Because of this, it makes for a wonderful small mountain town destination when travelling along I-40.  

Old Fort affects of Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene caused significant flooding and damage to Old Fort. The main down area from I-40 to the historic train station was flooded as Mill Creek overflowed its banks. The massive amounts of water caused homes and businesses to be destroyed. This included the main Destination McDowell Welcome Center and other surrounding buildings.   

When the waters receded, mud and sediment, over a foot deep, covered most of the historic downtown.

Restoration of basic services like power and water took over a week, and clean-up over 4-weeks.

While many businesses are still closed, many others are re-opening, as is the town of Old Fort itself, as of 11/1, welcoming visitors.

We had just visited Old Fort and spent over 4 days staying there, exploring the town and visiting businesses. We made many friends there during our visit, all of whom were affected by the flooding. In fact, the creek side rental cabin we stayed in was completely washed away and destroyed.

Like many small western NC towns affected by Helene, Old Fort suffered significant negative tourism impact during the peak fall season. We encourage you to visit and support the many wonderful and locally owned businesses!

Things to do in Old Fort

One of the first things you'll want to do when visiting Old Fort is stop by the Destination McDowell welcome center to learn about current area events. You'll also find lots of brochures, maps, and information on things to do, local attractions and more. 

Pisgah National Forest surrounds Old Fort, and as a result is nearby to many outdoor activities, including the popular Catawba Falls. You'll find many other hiking trails, waterfalls, and even fantastic options for mountain biking.

If you prefer shopping and trying out great local food, Old Fort has that as well, with several great local restaurants, quaint shops, and art galleries. They even have a fantastic brewery and winery that serves up in house crafted beverages and food.

Where to Eat in Old Fort, NC

Old Fort may be a small mountain town, but its food scene is surprisingly good and frankly unexpected.

During our visit, we discovered a variety of restaurants offering great food at very reasonable prices. They even have a brewery with great food, and one of the best coffee shops in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Seeker Coffee.

Where to Stay when visiting Old Fort

When visiting Old Fort, you have several different options for where to stay.

During our visit, we stayed at a creek side stilt cabin by Greybeard Rentals and absolutely loved it. We enjoyed a roomy cabin, right next to downtown Old Fort, and across the street from Eudo Wine. We even had a hot tub!

Sadly, the cabin we stayed in, pictured above, was washed away and destroyed by the flooding. But the owners have other similar cabins that will be available for rent in the near future.

Also available are Mountain Appalachian Inn and Inn on Mill Creek (currently closed until 2025).

If you prefer to camp, Catawba Falls Campground is a great option. We stayed here many years ago with our kids during our first visit to Catawba Falls and really enjoyed it. The campground is currently closed, but is working to reopen.

What really sealed the deal for us was when we pulled in behind a 1960s Ford Galaxy squad car sitting at a stoplight. We literally expected Barney to jump out of the car, all in a frenzy about something, and tell us to "nip it!"

While Mount Airy certainly embraces its roots and fame as the real life Mayberry, we were on a quest to go a little deeper. We wanted to discover if Mount Airy was more than just Mayberry. We wanted to explore all the other wonderful things this town and Surry County offered beyond Mayberry.

We weren't disappointed. Mount Airy nails Mayberry, but also offers Sonker, Ground Steak (a distant cousin to the hamburger), art, music, vineyards, parks, moonshine ice cream, and an incredibly interesting history about the original Siamese Twins.

Where is Mount Airy NC?

Mount Airy, North Carolina is located in Surry County in the northern part of North Carolina just inside the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and next to Interstate 77 (I-77). Mount Airy is about 40 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, and about 2 hours from Charlotte.

Mount Airy, NC, is located in Surry County in the northern part of North Carolina, near the Virginia border. It is nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 40 miles northwest of Winston-Salem. Known as the hometown of actor Andy Griffith, Mount Airy is often associated with the fictional town of Mayberry from "The Andy Griffith Show."

Its charming downtown area, scenic surroundings, and rich history make it a popular destination for visitors exploring the Blue Ridge region. It's also home to Pilot Mountain, which many are familiar with.

Is Mount Airy Mayberry?

While Mount Airy definitely embraces its Mayberry heritage from the popular Andy Griffith TV Show, Mount Airy is not Mayberry. Mayberry was a fictitious town created especially for the TV show and was based on Mount Airy where Andy Griffith was born and raised.

Mayberry was a Hollywood set at Desilu Studios. The set was unfortunately demolished many years ago. Although many of the artifacts from the set were saved and can be seen at the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy.

Sherriff Andy Taylor, and other characters from the Andy Griffith show often mention Mount Airy as the nearest "big city" to Mayberry. Because of this and it being Andy's hometown, Mount Airy calls itself the "real life Mayberry", and downtown Mount Airy is themed around the Andy Griffith Show. 

You'll find shops like Opie's Candy Store, Wally's Service Stations, Barney's Cafe, and Floyd's Barbershop. You can even take a tour of Mount Airy in a replica 1960s Mayberry squad car.

Things to do

There are plenty of things to in Mount Airy, North Carolina, including lots of downtown shops and attractions that are themed to the Andy Griffith Show. But Mount Airy offers so much more than just Mayberry to see and do when visiting, including: Vineyards, shops, public parks, museums, art, music, and even a ghost tour!

Where to eat

Like many Blue Ridge Mountain small towns, Mount Airy is full of locally owned restaurants where you can find delicious and unique foods to enjoy. For example, Ground Steak is a Surry County original and enjoyed by many. So much so that there is a Ground Steak Trail with lots of different restaurants.

Sonker is also another Surry County original. Sonker is a lot like a cobbler, but a little different and absolutely delicious. There is also a Sonker Trail you can follow to try out the different Surry County sonker recipes.

Where is Hendersonville NC?

Hendersonville NC is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and right off I-26 about 20 miles south of Asheville NC.  

Hendersonville is known as “The City of Four Seasons” and is at an elevation of 2200 feet. The border between North Carolina and South Carolina is 15 miles south of Hendersonville, and the city itself is the a county seat for Henderson County.

• Shine - Shine delivers fantastic food and service in downtown Hendersonville. They also have a large bar area, and a rooftop bar as well that delivers great drinks and views of downtown Hendersonville.
• Book and the Bee - Located just outside of Hendersonville, this unique British themed restaurant serves up fantastic hot tea, amazing baked goods, and wonderful lunch fare.   
• Flat Rock Wood Room - This is a real hidden gem and a local favorite. They have wonderful wood fired items including pizza, barbecue, and burgers. They also have the best shrimp and grits we've ever had.

Tuxedo Falls – Luxury Treehouses and Safari Tents in the Woods - Our Top Pick

During our most recent visit to Hendersonville, we had the absolute pleasure of staying at Tuxedo Falls, and it was easily one of the most fun and memorable lodging experiences we’ve ever had in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Tuxedo Falls is a truly unique place to stay, offering a combination of luxury treehouses and safari tents surrounded by peaceful forest and scenic trails. Each accommodation is beautifully designed and packed with thoughtful touches — including heated bathroom floors, heated toilet seats, walk-in showers, full kitchens, pour-over coffee setups, outdoor grills, and even pizza ovens!

We stayed in the Tajar Treehouse, which was incredible — a real tree grows right through the middle of the living area! The space was warm and inviting, with beautiful décor and an upstairs sleeping loft accessed by a ladder. The setup made it feel like a grown-up version of a childhood dream — cozy, private, and surrounded by nature.

Both the treehouses and safari tents have heating and air conditioning, making them comfortable year-round. The tents are a little larger and offer more expansive views, while the treehouses provide a snug, elevated experience that feels especially connected to the forest.

The property also includes a welcoming lodge, where you’ll find a small store stocked with breakfast items, snacks, and even pizza kits for the outdoor ovens. There’s also a bar with wine and beer, an arts and crafts area, comfortable seating spaces, and an outdoor fire pit — perfect for relaxing in the evening with a drink and good conversation.

But what really makes Tuxedo Falls shine are the hiking trails that wind through the property, leading to several waterfalls — including the beautiful Tuxedo Falls itself. The trails are peaceful and well maintained, offering the perfect way to start or end your day in nature.

Tuxedo Falls is easily one of the most enjoyable and special places we’ve ever stayed in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s the perfect destination to unwind, reconnect with nature, and enjoy a few days of quiet luxury in the woods. We can’t wait to go back.

Echo Mountain Inn - Our Pick

Located just a few minutes from downtown Hendersonville, NC, Echo Mountain Inn offers a historic, serene, and charming retreat for visitors looking to unwind and enjoy nature when visiting the Hendersonville area. The Inn is family-owned and run by a friendly and helpful family.

This historic inn, established in 1896, combines the warmth of Southern hospitality with modern amenities to provide a memorable stay for all guests.

At the inn, you'll find multiple comfortable rooms, each uniquely designed with antique furnishings and special touches that exude a feeling of timeless grace. Many of the rooms offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains, creating a peaceful and picturesque backdrop for your stay.

Guests can also enjoy a delicious and freshly prepared breakfast each morning, along with hot tea and coffee. Breakfast is served buffet-style in the large and comfortable dining area.  

The Inn is really more of a Bed and Breakfast, but larger. You get the quality and comfort and experience of a bed-and-breakfast, but have hotel-level accommodations.

Our stay at Echo Mountain Inn was in the spring of 2024, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We stayed in the "Royal" King room.  We had a large King sized bed, magnificent views with windows, and an enormous bathroom and shower. The bed was comfortable, and the Inn was quiet and peaceful.

We enjoyed breakfast and coffee downstairs each morning while relaxing and enjoying the view. We highly recommend staying at Echo Mountain Inn when visiting Hendersonville, NC.

Allora

We stayed at Allora during our recent trip to Hendersonville for The Winter Ramble, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The building is brand new — they’ve only been open since fall 2025 — and everything feels fresh, modern, and thoughtfully designed. Our room was spacious and exceptionally clean, with a large contemporary shower that added a touch of luxury after a full day out exploring.

That evening, one of the owners played the harp in the common area, which created a relaxing, almost storybook atmosphere as the day wound down. It was such a unique and personal touch. In our room, we also appreciated the sound generator, which allowed us to fall asleep to different options — we chose the fan-style white noise and slept great.

The next morning, we enjoyed fantastic artisan coffee and a delicious complimentary breakfast — including Dutch apple pancakes, a perfect nod to the fact that we were staying in apple country. The hosts were genuinely warm and welcoming, creating an experience that feels far more personal than a traditional hotel stay. With just a few beautifully curated guest rooms and inviting common spaces, Allora offers an intimate boutique atmosphere right in the heart of downtown.

One of the biggest highlights for us was the location. Being steps from Main Street meant we could walk to restaurants, shops, breweries, and event venues without ever moving the car. If you’re looking for a modern, upscale stay with personalized hospitality in downtown Hendersonville, Allora is a standout choice.

Kanuga is a 1400 acre resort that offers a beautiful Inn to stay in, tons of outdoor activities, a dining hall, gift shop, lakeside lounge and much more. Kanuga is just a few minutes from downtown Hendersonville, yet when you stay there, you'll feel you're in the remote mountains.

Burnsville, NC Official Re-opening

Let us say this loud and clear: Burnsville, NC is OPEN.

In late spring 2025, Burnsville officially reopened its doors to visitors after months of recovery and rebuilding from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene. We were honored to be in town for the celebration—and the energy on the square was something special.

The reopening wasn’t just about cutting ribbons. It was a full-blown community event. Local shops and restaurants threw open their doors, downtown was buzzing with live music, families filled the streets and town square, and vendors lined the sidewalks. Burnsville didn’t just reopen—it came back to life with heart, soul and strength.  

The star of the weekend was the re-opening of the NuWray Hotel. After a challenging three-year restoration, the hotel hosted a special celebration with ribbon cutting, live honky-tonk music, a southern-style BBQ dinner, and drinks at Roland’s Bar. We spent the evening chatting with locals, listening to music spill into the streets, and soaking in the joy of a town finally back on its feet.

We also took time to revisit many of the local businesses that had weathered both the storm and the long road back. Nearly every spot we walked into had a story—of rebuilding, resilience, and a deep commitment to keeping Burnsville’s small-town spirit alive. If you’re planning a visit in 2025 or beyond, just know this: Burnsville is ready—and better than ever.

Where to Stay

While Burnsville is a small town, there’s no shortage of great places to stay—especially if you enjoy charming, locally owned spots with a strong sense of place. We’ve stayed at both the historic NuWray Hotel and the Terrell House Bed & Breakfast, and can vouch for the comfort, hospitality, and location of each. Both are right in town, making it easy to walk to shops, restaurants, and the town square.

If you're looking for more space or a quiet mountain retreat, there are also plenty of vacation rentals and Airbnbs in the area. Whether you want a rustic cabin in the woods, a modern home with a view, or something tucked along a peaceful creek, there’s a rental out there to match the vibe of your trip.

Here are our two favorite places to stay in Burnsville.

NuWray Hotel

If you're looking to stay right in the heart of downtown Burnsville, it’s hard to beat the NuWray Hotel—North Carolina’s oldest continuously operating inn. Built in 1833, the NuWray recently reopened after a meticulous three-year restoration by its owners James and Amanda Keith. We were fortunate to attend the reopening celebration. Since then, we’ve stayed at the hotel a couple of times—and each visit has only deepened our appreciation for what they’ve brought back to life.

The restoration work is nothing short of impressive. Old photographs line the hallways, original beams are exposed throughout the building, and even bits of antique wallpaper have been carefully preserved and displayed. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, and many rooms are themed to reflect the hotel’s rich history and notable guests.

There are 26 guest rooms total—22 inside the main hotel and four in the nearby Carriage House. The rooms in the main building feature original hardwood floors, vintage touches, and updated bathrooms. The Carriage House rooms are more spacious, pet- and family-friendly, and offer a quiet retreat just steps away from the action.

Two of our favorite rooms are the Elvis Room—dedicated to one of the hotel’s most famous past guests—and the Mount Mitchell Room, the hotel’s premiere suite. It’s spacious, elegant, and offers beautiful views of the Burnsville town square and surrounding mountains.

The hotel restaurant's opening night offered us amazing food, both innovative new entrees and familiar NuWray-style dishes. Both the food and the service were superb. 

The next morning, we were the very first guests to enjoy the new breakfast buffet—and it did not disappoint. From the fresh cathead biscuits and famous NuWray cream gravy, everything was made with care and full of flavor.

Roland’s Bar, tucked into the old smokehouse out back, is also worth a visit—whether you’re looking for a drink in the evening or a relaxing spot to unwind with friends.

The NuWray has long been a fixture in Burnsville’s story, and now that it’s open again, it’s once more a vibrant, welcoming hub for both locals and travelers. If you’re looking for a place to stay that’s full of character, history, and mountain hospitality—you’ll find it here.

Terrell House Bed & Breakfast

Terrell House Bed and Breakfast is a charming bed and breakfast located in the heart of Burnsville, NC. The house was built in 1900 and has been lovingly restored to its former glory. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and each one has its own unique character. The breakfasts are delicious and made with fresh, local ingredients.

The Terrell House is located within walking distance of downtown Burnsville, which is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. The town is also a great base for exploring the surrounding mountains and forests.

Getting to Burnsville, NC from Asheville NC is easy!   Let us help you.

1. Coming from Asheville? It's a scenic drive you're going to love! Jump onto I-26 W and keep an eye out for exit 9. You're heading towards US-19 N, in the direction of Burnsville/Spruce Pine. Stick to this route for around 35 miles and voilà, you've arrived in the heart of Burnsville NC!
2. Flying into Asheville Regional Airport? From the airport, set your course west on NC-280 W. Soon, you'll merge onto I-26 W. Keep going until you reach exit 9 for US-19 N, signposted for Burnsville/Spruce Pine. Stay on this road and before you know it, you'll be basking in the charm of Burnsville!
3. Looking for landmarks? On your drive, you'll pass the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway, admire the serene Cane River, and catch sight of the majestic Mount Mitchell. Once you reach Burnsville, don't miss the historic Nu Wray Inn - it's a gem right in the town square!
4. Thinking about taking a bus? At the moment, there aren't any direct bus services to Burnsville. 
5. Prefer Uber or Lyft? You're in luck! Both these ride-sharing services operate in the Asheville area and can whisk you away to Burnsville. Just a heads up though - availability can sometimes be limited, so planning in advance is a smart move!

Spring (March-May)

The average temperature in March is 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and it gradually climbs to 70 degrees Fahrenheit by May. The humidity is also lower in the spring, so it feels less muggy.

Summer (June-August)

Summer is the warmest season in Burnsville. The average temperature in June is 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and it reaches its peak in July with an average high of 79 degrees Fahrenheit. Fall (September-November)

When visiting Ellijay, we highly recommend taking some time to explore the many nearby destinations. Luckily, there are plenty of options within driving distance that offer a change of scenery and unique experiences.

Blue Ridge Georgia

One popular destination is Blue Ridge Georgia which is just a short drive away. Blue Ridge offers a nice downtown, a scenic railroad (the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway), mountain views, outdoor activities, and restaurants.  

Enjoy shopping, dining, and exploring antique stores in the quaint downtown area. 

Dahlonega Georgia  

Dahlonega is a historic town located around 35 miles southwest of Ellijay. Dahlonega GA is widely known for its gold mining history, charming downtown area, and picturesque surroundings.

The town's gold rush heritage is celebrated in the Dahlonega Gold Museum, which is housed in the former Lumpkin County Courthouse. Visitors can explore exhibits that highlight the area's gold mining history and even try their hand at panning for gold.

Dahlonega's downtown square is a hub of activity, lined with shops, restaurants, and art galleries. The square has a vibrant atmosphere and is a popular spot for festivals and events throughout the year. You can browse unique shops, sample local wines, and enjoy a meal at one of the many eateries.

Wine enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in Dahlonega. The area is dotted with wineries and vineyards, offering wine tastings, tours, and picturesque views of the vine-covered hills. It's a great opportunity to sample regional wines and learn about the local winemaking process.

For outdoor adventure, the town is located near the Chattahoochee National Forest, which offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and camping. The nearby Amicalola Falls State Park, with its stunning waterfall and hiking trails, is also worth a visit.

Atlanta Georgia

For those looking for a city experience, Atlanta is just over an hour's drive from Ellijay. Explore the city's rich history at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site or the Atlanta History Center.

Visit the Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world, or catch a game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. And of course, no trip to Atlanta is complete without trying some of the city's famous Southern cuisine.

Blairsville Georgia

Finally, Blairsville GA is a nearby small town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of North Georgia. It offers a tranquil and scenic setting, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.

One of the main attractions in Blairsville is Vogel State Park. It is one of Georgia's oldest and most beloved state parks, offering a range of recreational activities. Visitors can enjoy camping, fishing, boating, swimming, and hiking in the park's beautiful surroundings.

Another notable destination near Blairsville is Brasstown Bald.  As the highest point in Georgia, it provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. A visit to Brasstown Bald is a must if you're in the area.

In downtown Blairsville, you'll find quaint shops, local restaurants, and historic landmarks. The town square is a focal point, hosting various events throughout the year, including the Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games.

Blairsville is also known for its abundance of outdoor activities. There are numerous hiking trails in the area, including the famous Appalachian Trail, which passes close by. Where is Beech Mountain NC?

Beech Mountain NC is located on the top of Beech Mountain in the "High Country" of North Carolina, not far from Boone NC, and just up the road a bit from Banner Elk NC in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

History of Beech Mountain

Development of the town of Beech Mountain NC began in the late 60s.   Harry and Grover Robbins (founder of Tweetsie Railroad) purchased land on top of Beech Mountain and created the Ski Resort, Land of Oz theme park, and a golf course, along with pool and tennis facilities.  

As part of this development, they also built roads and sewer services as well.  They later filed for bankruptcy in 1974, and the Home Owners Community took over road maintenance and sewer, and the town itself was formed 

Today, Beech Mountain is a thriving small mountain community that is a popular retreat from the summer heat and a major US skiing destination.

4 Seasons Beech Mountain Hotel and Condos

When we visited Beech Mountain NC in the late summer of 2022, we really enjoyed staying in a vacation condo at 4 Seasons Cedar Village. You can see a full tour of our condo in our Beech Mountain video above.

Our Condo was just a short drive from the main hotel and offered a Gas Fireplace, full kitchen and dining area, 2 bathrooms, 3 full bedrooms with double beds, and a really nice deck.

The 4 Seasons Hotel features a spacious lobby, with sitting areas, and an enormous stone fireplace. You'll find a game room, with:

• Ping-pong
• Air Hockey
• Foosball
• and Pool tables

There is even a fitness room as well.  

4 Seasons is conveniently located close to the main area of town, with easy access to area attractions and Beech Mountain Resort.

4 Seasons also includes an excellent Mexican restaurant on site called Mi Jalisco, which we really enjoyed!

Where is Boone NC?

Boone NC is in Watauga County, North Carolina, and is also the county-seat. Boone is the home of Appalachian State University, which literally sits in the town's heart.  

Boone NC is about 2 hours north of Charlotte NC, 3 hours west of Raleigh NC, and about 2 hours east of Asheville NC. Boone is a popular mountain destination for those in the Charlotte and Raleigh areas because of its proximity. 

History of Boone North Carolina 

They named Boone after the famed Appalachian explorer, Daniel Boone.  Daniel Boone often camped at a location agreed to be within the current city limits on Boone.

Railroads were important to the success of mountain towns. Boone was no exception, being served by the narrow gauge East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (more commonly called "Tweetsie" by the locals). This railroad service contributed significantly to Boone's growth.

A major flood in 1940 washed away a good amount of track, and the railroad decided not to replace it. What remains of the railroad we can find today at nearby Tweetsie Railroad.  

Boone is the home of Appalachian State University, a "constituent member" of the University of North Carolina system. Appalachian State is the sixth-largest university in North Carolina's seventeen-campus system.

Today, Boone NC is the largest community of the seven-county region of Western North Carolina, commonly referred to as "The High Country".

Given the university and student focus of Boone NC, we arrived to expect typical college fair food. You know, quick, cheap, but decent.

While where are certainly many options like this, there are also some excellent and locally owned dining options for tourists and visitors. Boone offers anything from sushi to Italian, and pretty much everything in between.
