Ellijay GA Weekend Getaway

One of our goals over the past couple of years was to expand our reach in the Blue Ridge Mountains and begin spending more time exploring areas of the Blue Ridge that we don't live in, or nearby.  

One of those areas was the North Georgia mountains.  

Our first for 2023 was to Ellijay, where we spent a weekend an incredible rental cabin, exploring the historic and beautiful downtown, searching for Bigfoot, eating at the best Ellijay restaurants, hiking to waterfalls, tasting wines, and many more things to do!

In this travel blog, we'll cover all of the places we visited, things to do in town, and tips for planning your own Ellijay adventure.  Plus, we'll share our favorite photos from the trip!

Driving from Waynesville NC to Ellijay GA

Ellijay GA is about 2.5 hours from our hometown of Waynesville NC.  The drive is gorgeous, as you travel through the high elevations of the Balsams near the Blue Ridge Parkway, and along the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains as you travel by Cherokee and Bryson City NC.   

We've done the drive many times before heading south for various trips to Atlanta and Florida.  Our favorite part of the drive is through the Nantahala Gorge where you follow along the Nantahala River.   Absolutely beautiful.

We soon arrived in Blue Ridge GA, and Ellijay is just a few minutes past Blue Ridge on Highway 76.  

Our destination was the Welcome Center in downtown Ellijay.

Downtown Ellijay and the Welcome Center

We soon pulled into the town center of Ellijay GA, with its large roundabout surrounded by shops and restaurants in historic old buildings.  The town was vibrant, with people walking along the streets, shopping, and munching away on snacks.  

Ellijay has that classic old town center, called Ellijay Circle, where the town centers around the traffic circle, there is a landscaped area in the middle, with a historic old town hall.   It's a charming small mountain town, that we began to like immediately

We parked behind the Welcome Center, which is an old home right on Ellijay Circle.   We visited shortly before the 4th of July weekend, and the Welcome Center was beautifully decorated for July 4th.   The building looked very festive.

We walked in, introduced ourselves, and grabbed our Welcome Basket, which was full of information on Ellijay and surrounding areas, from maps to downtown to restaurants, to nearby hiking trails and waterfalls, to information on local wineries.    All of this information is available in the Welcome Center run by the Gilmer County Chamber, and we highly recommend you stop by.  

Donna and Joe were working that day, and we really enjoyed talking with them.  If you have an opportunity to meet and talk to Joe, do so.  Especially if you love a little mystery and the unknown.  Joe has been in Ellijay for a long time and spends a great deal of time out in the woods exploring.  He definitely has some things to show and share with you.

Heading to Out of the Bleu Cabin

Our home away from home for the weekend was Out of the Bleu Cabin, an AirBnB located about 15 minutes outside of downtown Ellijay in the beautiful Coosawattee River Resort.  The drive there was really nice, as we were surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards along the way.

When travelling, we far prefer AirBnBs and Bed & Breakfasts, just a personal preference for us.  We have nothing against hotels, and there are some nice hotels in Ellijay as well, for those that prefer them.

Coosawattee River Resort is a gated community, with a guard during normal business hours.  We stopped, gave our names and lot # and were allowed through.   The community is beautiful, with paved roads.   

It didn't take long for us to spot our first deer.  This would be one of many we would see in the resort during our stay.

Out of the Bleu Cabin

Out of the Bleu Cabin is located towards the back side of the resort, but we found it soon enough, and it was gorgeous.  

We didn't realize before we arrived that it was new construction, and I mean brand new, with construction wrapping up in late 2022.

We pulled into the driveway excited to see what the inside looked like.   We had seen photos, but it's just never the same.  We entered the code and opened the door.

The first thing that hit us was that new home smell.  The interior was very open and full of natural wood trim.  The vaulted ceiling was stunning, going all the way to the top of the cabin.  The main living area and kitchen are connected, making one large open space.

The huge fireplace immediately drew our attention and is surrounded by large windows that provide a gorgeous long-distance view.

The house has 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, 2 decks with outdoor spaces, a hot tub, and a game room.  The game room even has a selfie backdrop with a blue neon sign that says "Out of the Bleu", and the best thing ever?  A Pac-Man machine.

Needless to say, the cabin was gorgeous, and we were so excited to stay there for the weekend.  It far exceeded our expectations.

After exploring, we quickly unloaded our car, changed clothes, and had to run back to Ellijay for dinner.

Diner at Bev's Diner

Bev's is a relatively new addition to Ellijay and is a 50s-themed diner that specializes in burgers, shakes, and floats.  Bev's isn't super fancy and not very big, but they focus on food, which is just fine with us.  Don't misunderstand us, it's a nice little restaurant, and very clean, with excellent food.

Their burgers are made to order and are made from local all-natural beef from Bear Creek Cattle Company.

We were greeted by our friendly server Zeta.  We took a few minutes to look over the pretty long list of different burgers and options.  We ended up ordering two bacon cheeseburgers, one with fresh-cut fries, and one with onion rings.   We also ordered the "Howdy Ya'll" burger which includes sweet BBQ sauce, onion rings, and cheddar cheese.

Our food quickly came out, hot and fresh and the owners, Abbey, and her brother came out and talked to us for a bit, both were super nice and excited about their new place.

The burgers were by far some of the best we've ever had, and the portions were huge.  We couldn't eat it all.   But we did save some room for dessert and ordered a Coke Float and Butterscotch milkshake.  Let me tell you, that Butterscotch milkshake was incredible.

We really enjoyed our meal at Bev's and we highly recommend you try them when visiting Ellijay GA.  We love a great burger, and Bev's serves them up, hot and fresh.  The sides of fries and onion rings were very good as well, and not greasy at all - which is a huge plus.  

Bev's is definitely a place we would eat time and time again. 

We headed back to our vacation cabin, to get some rest, as it had been a long day.  Tomorrow (Saturday) was full of activities and another full day.

Breakfast at Ellijay Coffeehouse

After a wonderful and quiet night's rest at Out of the Bleu, we woke up early and headed into Ellijay to catch some breakfast.    

Ellijay Coffeehouse had been recommended to us by a number of people, so we decided to give them a try, and we're super glad we did.

Ellijay Coffeehouse is located right downtown and serves up fantastic coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and pastries.  The staff was super friendly, incredibly professional, and courteous.  The coffeehouse is like having breakfast at home, with lots of comfortable seating areas and a warm inviting atmosphere.

We ended up getting an Apple Pie Latte, a Cinnamon Roll Latte, and a hot chocolate, along with a lemon cake, chocolate donut, and some Panini breakfast sandwiches.  The Paninis were the "Appalachian Sunrise", which includes bacon, egg, spinach, brie, and chipotle peach spread.  All were absolutely fantastic.   The peach spread really made the sandwich, and the coffees were great.  Not overly sweet or flavored, just just right.

Definitely on our list of top favorite coffee houses.  Highly recommended, and a local favorite as well.

Ellijay Farmer's Market

We had a little time to kill between coffee and our planned visit to Expedition Bigfoot at 10:00am and decided to visit the Farmer's Market, which occurs every weekend behind the Welcome Center and next to the large courthouse downtown.

We arrived shortly after it opened, and there were about 50 vendors or so setup.  It was larger than we expected, and full of vendors selling fresh produce, homemade items like soap and jewelry, art, and much more.

The Farmer's Market is definitely a place you'll want to visit and explore when in Ellijay GA for the weekend.  We really enjoyed it and purchased some soaps and jewelry items.   We really wanted some of the fresh produce being sold, but it would have roasted in our car all day.

Expedition Bigfoot

We'll be honest about Expedition Bigfoot, we weren't sure what to expect, and honestly expected some cheesy "museum" that had a bunch of fake-looking items and selling t-shirts.

We were so very wrong ...

Expedition Bigfoot is a nice and very serious museum that really surprised us.    While not super huge, it is packed with artifacts, exhibits, and movies showcasing various Bigfoot items, significant Bigfoot locations, and real footage of Bigfoot sightings.   There are even audio tours and audio recordings of bigfoot sounds.

The staff is professional and really knowledgeable as well as Bigfoot and the Legend.  Special thanks to Amanda for getting our tour started, and putting up with all of our questions!  

We did the full tour and watched some of the documentary movies and footage being shown.  We also explored the shop, which again, I thought would be super cheesy, but honestly had some really cool stuff.   We ended up purchasing some socks for our son, and I got a "Believe" T-shirt.

We arrived at the museum being very skeptical but left really wondering if Bigfoot really does exist.  Do we believe? No, not 100%, but there is definitely something going on.  There is just too much history and evidence to think otherwise.  Expedition Bigfoot really got us thinking. 

Hiking to Fall Branch Falls

After wrapping up our fun experience at Expedition Bigfoot, it was time to hit the trail and do some hiking.  

Turns out, there is a waterfall called Fall Branch Falls about 20 minutes from Expedition Bigfoot.   The drive there is on a remote gravel road, through some gorgeous forest and farmland.  

We really enjoyed the drive.

Fall Branch Falls is located along the Benton McKaye Trail.   The hike out to the base of the falls is short, only about 1/2 mile, but there is a pretty steady incline for the majority of distance.   Not too difficult, but moderate.

This is a pretty busy hiking trail and the parking area was nearly full when we arrived late morning.   Fall Branch Falls was really nice, with two main cascades flowing down into the creek.  The best time for photos would be early AM or late PM. 

While there, something pretty scary happened.  A lady was up on the top area (where the couple is in the photo above, but closer to the edge.  She slide all the way down the waterfall.  She said she wasn't hurt, but we suspect she probably was.  It was a long slide with a hard landing on the rocks below.    She did walk out though.

Just a stark reminder to always stay off the waterfalls, the rocks are slick and a fall can be deadly.  Be safe out there.

Fall Branch Falls is definitely worth a visit, especially given the short hike.  The only downside was that a local glamping venue has built a facility alongside the creek and next to the waterfall.  While these looked really nice, it did take away from the natural and remote feeling of the waterfall.

Lunch at the Pink Pig

After a busy morning searching for Bigfoot and hiking to Fall Branch Falls, we were hungry.  

We had heard that The Pink Pig in nearby Cherry Log had some of the best BBQ in the area, so we headed that way.  The Pink Pig is not far at all from Expedition Bigfoot.

The Pink Pig is a rustic-looking restaurant located just off Cherry Log Street.  The restaurant is rustic, as it was built in the 1950s as a store and grist mill.  The building became The Pink Pig in 1967 and has been serving up fantastic BBQ and its famous garlic salad ever since.

We were seated in the back area and began looking over the large and delicious-sounding menu. 

To start, we ordered an appetizer sampler of fried green tomatoes, the Oink Onion (their version of the well known blooming onion), and fried pickles.  We also tried the famous garlic salad.

The fried items were delicious, and lightly fried, which was nice.  The salad ... well the salad is just simply amazing.  So much so, that we brought some of their in-house garlic dressing home with us.  It's available for purchase in their store on the way out.

For dinner, we ordered the pulled pork plate and pulled pork sandwich, some ribs, and brisket.   Our sides were fries, coleslaw, and fried okra.   All absolutely delicious.   The ribs were so tender, they were literally falling off the bone.   We love to try coleslaw at various restaurants, and theirs was excellent, which is rare in our experience.

For dessert, we sampled their peanut butter pie, blackberry cobbler, and banana pudding.   All delicious, but that banana pudding ... well, it was incredible.  The peanut butter pie was good, but a hit heavy and very rich.  

We left very full ... too much so actually, and honestly, needed another hike to burn off all of the food!

Tim, our server, and the entire staff at The Pink Pig were so good to us, incredibly helpful, friendly. We really appreciate Tim taking the time to explain all of the food, telling us about the restaurants history, and for just being a great guy.  Thanks Tim!   

Out of our entire visit, The Pink Pig was our favorite place to eat and we highly recommend you pay them.  You will thank us later.

Exploring Downtown Ellijay and Antique Stores

Since we first arrived in Ellijay, we had been really looking forward to spending some time exploring the historic downtown area.   We found a parking place, grabbed a town map from the Welcome Center, and began exploring all of the cool shops and antique stores.

Ellijay GA is of course well known for Apples, but it's also very well known for its large number of nice antique stores. In fact, so much so, that they have an Antiques Trail you can follow.   Stop by the visitor's center and grab a pamphlet. 

When you visit a certain number of stores and make a purchase, you get a check.  If you get enough checks, you win a prize!  There is also a Sips Trail and Sweets Trail as well!

We really enjoyed exploring many of the stores like Antiques on North Main, Linda's Outback Antiques & More, and Mainstreet Antiques & Collectibles.  All of these are part of the Antiques Trail.

Be sure to stop by Bavarian Chocolatier and Fudge Shop, BEAU-tiful Creations Paint Parties, Green Willow Soap, and Mountain Hounds for all of your "dogger" needs.  

All of these friendly folks were super accommodating of us, and we appreciate it!

When visiting, plan to spend a few hours downtown.  There is lots to see, and many different restaurants and places to grab coffee, snacks and sweets.    The historic downtown is wonderful.

Grapes and Ladders Winery

After exploring downtown Ellijay, we headed back to our vacation rental, changed clothes, and then headed just down the road to Grapes and Ladders Winery for a wine tasting.

The wine property is gorgeous, with rolling green hills covered in vineyards.   The main tasting building sits just off Highway 382, surrounded by a gravel parking area.   The vineyard is very casual and laid back, and we really enjoyed it.  Some wineries can be a bit stuffy, but Grapes and Ladders is not.

We stood at the main bar area and sampled their selection of wines, all made right there at the Winery.  

Jenn prefers whites, and I prefer Reds.  She tasted the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Seven Bridges Rose, and Cherokee Rose.  I tasted the Some Like It Red (a red blend), Whole Lotta Red (Syrah and Cabernet Blend), Cabernet Sauvignon RESERVE, and the Southern Treasure Port.

All were excellent, with our favorites being: the Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon RESERVE, and the Port.  The Port was exceptionally excellent and unique being made from Chambourcin and Zinfandel grapes, with some brandy added.

They also have Wine slushies (and grape slushies for kids).  We've never had a wine slushie before, but they were way better than we expected.   Definitely, a great way to cool off on a warm summer day.

Grapes and Ladders has a really nice outdoor patio that overlooks the Vineyards and is excellent for just hanging out, drinking some great wine, and relaxing.  On weekends, they even have live bands.   

We really enjoyed our visit, and the owner and staff were excellent and great to work with.  Our visit really had us wishing we had some nice wineries in the Waynesville NC area of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Dinner at The Roof

After our wonderful wine tasting, we headed back into downtown Ellijay for dinner reservations at The Roof.  

We had heard a lot about this restaurant, mainly due to the nice view it has from the top of a building in downtown Ellijay.

We parked nearby and took the elevator up to the top.  We learned later there are stairs as well.  The elevator took us up to the top, where the hostess station is located and the main restaurant and bar.

There is a mix of indoor and outdoor seating at The Roof.  In the center is glass-enclosed indoor seating with a full bar area.  Around the perimeter are outdoor tables, and bar stools with table areas facing out into the town so you can have a drink and enjoy the view.  

The distant mountains and nice overall view of downtown Ellijay was nice.

Now, it does get pretty warm up on that rooftop, but The Roof has a number of large fans blowing and some fine cool mist blowing all around the perimeter.  It does really help.

We were seated at one of the shaded outdoor seats and began to look over the menu.  It all looked really good.  

 We started off with some drinks for the specialty drink menu and ordered the fried green tomatoes and Old Bay Peel and Eat Shrimp.  

For dinner, we ordered Apple Butter Meatloaf, which our daughter loved, the Fresh Appalachian Trout which was very good, and Grilled Salmon.   The Trout wasn't the best we've had in our Blue Ridge Mountains adventures but was still very good and grown locally so it was fresh.  Being fresh makes a huge difference.

Overall the food and drinks were good, and the views outstanding.   We did run into some service issues, but nothing major, and they were pretty busy.

We enjoyed dining as we watched the sunset behind the mountains, then headed back to our rental cabin.  It had been a long day, and we needed to just relax and unwind for the remainder of the evening.

We opened some wine, opened the hot tub, and just relaxed for the evening.

Back to Waynesville NC

Our adventures in Ellijay GA were about done, for this trip at least.  We are planning a trip back during the fall for apple season, and we look forward to exploring the many apple orchards ... and eating some apple goodies of course!

We packed up our car and very regrettably said goodbye to Out of the Bleu Cabin, which we literally fell in love with. We joked about putting it on top of our car and bringing it home with us.

On the way out, our plan was to stop at The Chili Dog, one of the oldest restaurants in Ellijay for their breakfast, which we heard was fantastic.  We also heard they have these huge cinnamon buns ... but they are closed on Sunday.  The Chili Dog is on the top of our list for our next trip!

Instead, we stopped at the Cornerstone Kitchen, where we fortunately grabbed the last table before a wait began.

They were busy and for good reason.  The food was really good with they have some unique breakfast items on the menu, including the stuffed pancake, which was basically a pancake omelet - a large pancake with eggs, cheese, and bacon inside.

Our the drive home, in the Nantahala Gorge, we saw Steam Engine 1702, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad steam engine sitting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (or NOC as locals call it).  

Turns out it was delayed but was going to be moving again soon.  We quickly turned around and headed back up to a good viewing spot to capture some photos and video.  We soon heard the whistle and that familiar chug chug sound, and knew it was coming.

1702 steamed by shortly after, and we got some great photos and video and waved to the crew and all the passengers.

Wrapping up our Weekend Getaway in Ellijay GA

When you visit a small town for the first time, in an area you aren't super familiar with, you never really know what to expect.  We had heard good things about Ellijay, which was why it was on our shortlist of Blue Ridge Mountain towns to visit, but hearing about something and reality of it can sometimes be a bit different.

To say that we really loved Ellijay Georgia, would be an understatement.  

The town and its people are absolutely charming.  They were all so kind and helpful, it was almost surreal.  

The Gilmer County Chamber went above and beyond to make sure our stay was excellent, and that we got to experience the true essence of the town and it's people.   We definitely cannot wait to go back.  Thanks Caitlin!

The same can be said for Amy, the host of Out of the Bleu Cabin - She was very responsive, helpful, and went out of her way to make us feel at home in their cabin.   We cannot say thank you enough, and the cabin is well .. phenomenal.

Events in Ellijay

We love Ellijay for its vibrant events scene. There's always something happening in the charming town of Ellijay GA, from live music performances to food festivals to outdoor activities and many other events and activities.

One of the most popular events in Ellijay is the annual Georgia Apple Festival. Held every fall, this festival celebrates the town's rich apple-growing heritage. The Pink Pig

Located in Cherry Log, just outside of Ellijay GA, you'll be hard pressed to find better BBQ and fixins than at the Pink Pig.    The folks here smoke the ribs, pulled pork, and even brisket to perfection.  

Be sure to start with their Fried Green Tomatoes, Oink Onion, or fried pickles.   All of these are delicious and lightly fried.  We really enjoyed the fact that these weren't super greasy and they serve with with ranch and their own in house spicy sauce.

Oh, and don't forget to try their Garlic Salad, which is unique and amazing.  They mix chopped garlic into oil, and cover the lettuce with this divine dressing.   We loved it so much we even bought the dressing to bring it home.

For dinner, grab one of their specials like the BBQ quesadillas or Brisket Nachos, or grab a full plates of BBQ, Brisket, Ribs and other items.  Everything comes with two delicious side items.  

Speaking of sides, try some homemade coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, Brunswick strew, fries or more.  You will not be disappointed, the plates are full and you will not leave hungry.

To wrap things up, try the amazing banana pudding, cobblers, or Peanut Butter Pie.  All were delicious, but that banana pudding ... well, it's to die for.

Go early and don't forget your appetite.  The Pink Pig is open seven days a week, so be sure to stop by for the   best BBQ around!  We will definitely be back.

Bev's Diner

Located in downtown Ellijay, Bev's Diner is an old school 50s style diner, serving up smash burgers, handcut fries, and some of the best tasting milkshakes you'll find anywhere.

Bev's in a historic old building in downtown that honestly pretty unremarkable.  In fact, you might even drive right by Bev's like we did when we first pulled up.  But don't let the exterior fool you.  While they may lack a fancy restaurant building, that fully make up it for in quality food and service.

The interior of Bev's has a simple 50s decor and the staff is dressed up just as you would expect to find in a 50s diner.   Records on the wall, 57s Chevys, and music by Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, the Penguins and more plays in the background.

Where Bev's really shines is with fantastic smash burgers, fries, onion rings, and milkshakes.  Bev's offers a number of different smash burgers, from the Old American (a traditional bacon cheeseburger) to the Wake Up, which features an egg, hashbrowns, candied bacon, and cheese sauce!

We tried three of their burgers, The All American with fries, the Bacon Cheeseburger with hand battered Onion Rings, The Howdy Ya'll with fries.  The Howdy Ya'll has onion rings and sweet bbq sauce on it.

All of their burgers are made using local all natural beef, and the fries are hand cut right there in the kitchen.  

The food was delivered hot and freshly made to our table, by our super nice and helpful waitress Zeta!  The burgers are all doubles, the portions are large.   We could only eat about half of ours in order to save some room for dessert.

For dessert, we tried a Coke Float and a Butterscotch Milkshake.   Both excellent, and we highly recommend the Butterscotch Milkshake!  

We've eaten many burgers and fries in our lives, and these were some of the best we've had anywhere.  We love the fact that Bev's Diner uses such high quality ingredients, and it really makes a difference.

If you have a craving for a delicious old fashioned smash burger, home style onion rings, or an amazing flavored milk shake with a 50s theme, Bev's Diner is your place!

Mountain Town Coffee at Hemlock Bazaar

While trying to find some coffee and breakfast one morning during our weekend getaway in Ellijay, we drove past Mountain Town Coffee (formally Ellijay Coffeehouse) and decided to give it a try. We are SO glad we did. It's truly a hidden gem, with fantastic coffee, breakfast items, atmosphere and staff.  

Mountain Town Coffee is located, like many other places in Ellijay, in an old historic building. The exterior isn't all that remarkable, but as you open the front door, you are immediately struck by the wonderful smells of fresh coffee and cappuccinos.

The hand written menu on the left highlighted their signature coffees, along with a menu next to it with more traditional fair. Signature coffees included The Honey Bear with honey, vanilla and cinnamon, the Bigfoot Latte with mocha, cinnamon, cayenne and chipotle, the Cinnamon Roll Latte and Apple Pie Latte. They even had a PB 'n Jelly Latte!

We ordered an Apple Pie Latte, a Cinnamon Roll Latte and a hot chocolate, along with a lemon cake, chocolate donut, and some Panini breakfast sandwiches. The panini's where the Appalachian Sunrise, which includes bacon, egg, spinach, brie, and chipotle peach spread. Everything was fantastic, and we mean truly fantastic.  

This coffee house is exceptional, and delivers everything you would expect in a coffee shop, in-house baked goods, excellent coffee, a warm and cozy atmosphere with plenty of seating. The staff makes you feel appreciated and welcomed.

In many coffee houses, we wouldn't feel comfortable just hanging out and relaxing for a while.  Maybe reading a good book, or working on an article. At Mountain Town Coffee, we definitely felt comfortable being there.

The Roof

Looking for a unique experience that offers good food, drinks and a view?   You'll definitely want to visit The Roof in Ellijay GA. 

The Roof is located, as you would expect, on the Roof of a tall building in historic downtown Ellijay and provides indoor and outdoor seating with an exceptional 360 degree view of the town and surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.   It makes for a great location to enjoy dinner, watch the sunset, and enjoy all of the evening activities in Ellijay.

The menu offers many traditional favorites, as well as unique dishes and drinks.  Their craft cocktails are also delicious and creative and they offer many beer and wine choices as well.  We started with a couple of their cocktails, which were excellent, then ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer.

For entrees, we tried the fresh local Trout, meatloaf, and salmon.  All were very good.

We followed this up with some chocolate cake for dessert.  Unfortunately, they only had 2 dessert options, and both of them chocolate, otherwise we would have tried more options.

The staff was friendly and attentive to our needs throughout the evening. Our favorite part of the experience was definitely the view – it was breathtaking!

The only negative to note is that it does get a bit warm up there when sitting outdoors, especially in the afternoon and early evening.  BUT, the Roof has really done a lot to address that.  They have fans all around, and cool water mist blowing all around the perimeter of the restaurant and bar.  This both cools you and the air blowing through.  It really makes a difference!

Overall, we enjoyed our dinner visit to The Roof in Ellijay. We would recommend it for anyone looking for a memorable dining experience or just a relaxing evening with friends.  Truly a unique dining experience when visiting Ellijay GA.

Cornerstone Cafe

The Cornerstone Cafe is a cozy and "down home" spot, specializing in breakfast and lunch dishes.  The menu offers many different items, including traditional breakfast favorites and some unique items as well, like the stuffed pancake.  

They also offer a number of daily special.  We tried the omelet special, which was delicious!  We also had a breakfast sandwich, and the stuffed pancake is a huge pancake stuffed with eggs, bacon and cheese.  Think of it as a pancake omelet.

The food was delicious, served up hot and fresh, and the coffee was great - the most important thing in any breakfast spot.

it is very small, and very busy, but the staff does a great job quickly cleaning tables, and getting people in to keep the wait short.  The Cornerstone Cafe is definitely a place  we would visit again for a bigger breakfast.

Back Porch Bistro

If you are looking for a quick bite to eat but great food, the Back Porch Bistro is the spot.  This small locally owned sandwich shop offers up some of the best sandwiches in town and at very reasonable prices.  They even have both indoor and outdoor seating available.

We love a good and authentic cuban sandwich, and the Back Porch Bistro delivers.   We also try to eat pretty healthy, especially for breakfast and dinner, and the menu is full of healthy options including salads, warps, and even vegetarian options.  They even have a bean burger that is made in house!

If you're looking for a quick place to grab some food, that is delicious and in a clean, welcoming, and dog-friendly environment, the Back Porch Bistro is your place.

Boardwalk Pizza and Pub

Boardwalk Pizza and Pub in Ellijay, Georgia is a favorite local bar that serves pizza and other bar foods.  The restaurant serves fresh-made pizzas made with homemade dough and loaded with topping options. They offer up anything from the classic build your own pizza to house specials like the bacon buffalo chicken pizza.  

In addition to the good pizza, Boardwalk also serves up hot dogs, pretzels, cheese sticks, and meatballs. While food is decent, they are mainly a bar offering plenty of craft beer on tap, wine, and cocktails.

Boardwalk Pizza and Pub is a popular hang-out for locals, that is fun and laid back.   The indoor space is small, but there is plenty of outdoor seating on the boardwalk behind the restaurant for enjoying the warm summer days.

They often have live music playing outdoors, and it always seems to be turned up when we were there.  There were plenty of people hanging out, listening to music, dancing, and having a good time.

Worried about leaving your pup at home? Not to worry! Boardwalk is dog friendly and has plenty of outdoor seating for your four-legged friend.

Cantaberry Restaurant

Cantaberry Restaurant is one of the best restaurants in Ellijay GA and they serve both lunch and dinner.  They also have a location in nearby Blue Ridge GA as well.

Cantaberry is locally known for its fresh sandwiches and salads, and in-house made soups. The atmosphere at Cantaberry Restaurant is casual, friendly and inviting.  The restaurant is located right next to the large townhall in Ellijay, right off the main city center.

The menu at Cantaberry Restaurant has lots of options and includes a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, wraps and soups.  The tomato basil and chicken & rice soups are phenomenal.  They offer a number of delicious bread options for sandwiches.  The chicken salad on a baguette was amazing, and we're big chicken salad connoisseurs.

While we didn't try them for dinner, the menu looks delicious, with lots of traditional Southern favorites including Fried Chicken, meatloaf, Country Fried Steak, and a pulled pork sandwich.       

If you’re looking for a great dining experience in Ellijay, then be sure to check out Cantaberry Restaurant. It's also dog friendly So don’t forget to bring Fido the next time you go out for dinner.

Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza

Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza is located on East Main Street in Ellijay GA and offers a warm atmosphere and delicious food. The restaurant specializes in wood-fired pizza with many unique toppings to choose from and speciality pizzas.

All of their pizzas are made from scratch using fresh ingredients and cooked in their wood burning oven for an authentic Italian style pizza. They also offer gluten free options.

The atmosphere at Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza is casual and inviting. The space is small but comfortable with plenty of seating available both indoors and outdoors. They also have a great selection of beer, wine, and cocktails to enjoy with your meal as well

What we like about Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza is they don't only wood fire the pizza, the wood fire a number of other items on the menu as well.

We highly recommend you start off with the Wood fired oysters or the Crab & Artichoke Wood Fired Fondue.  Both excellent, especially with that classic wood fire flavor.

You can order a pizza your way, or pick from their selection of white or red pizzas.  We were just glad to see white pizza as an option, as it's one of our favorites.  The Margherita Autentico is a fantastic traditional Margeherita Pizza, The Black Goat is also excellent and has goat cheese, apple maple bacon jam, pistachio, prosciutto, and black garlic molasses.

Ellijay Wood Fired Pizza is dog friendly, like many restaurants in Ellijay, so you can bring your furry family member along for an evening out. 

The Shack of Ellijay

Located just outside of the main downtown area of Ellijay, The Shack is a must-visit Asian fusion restaurant that offers a unique dining experience in Ellijay. 

The Shack is open for lunch only, from 11- 5pm.  Their menu features and Poke bowls, noodle bowls, and Pho.

We unfortunately were not able to try The Shack, although we really wanted to.  But we heard great things from locals and friends that have visited Ellijay many times.   So we look forward to trying them on our next visit!

 Overall, The Shack of Ellijay is an excellent choice for those seeking excellent Asian cuisine in a welcoming environment.   

River Street Tavern

Among the many excellent dining options in Ellijay GA, River Street Tavern stands out as another must-visit restaurant.

What sets River Street Tavern apart from other restaurants in the area is its menu - it's a creative mix of classic comfort food and unique offerings. From the Mexican street corn to the Chicken and Waffles and the blackened Mahi Caesar salad, every dish on the menu is very flavorful.

What really caught our attention was the large selection of burgers made from local and all natural beef.   They offer up a Southwest burger, a wonton burger, and the Mega cheese and bacon burger.  You can even get a "Big Game" burger which features Elk, Bison, Wagyu and wild boar.

They also offer a large selection of wings, and chicken sandwiches.

The atmosphere at River Street Tavern is cozy and casual and plenty of comfortable seating options. It's the kind of place where you can come in after a long day of hiking or exploring the town, relax, and feel right at home.   They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and are dog friendly as well.

The Chili Dog

In the heart of Ellijay GA, The Chili Dog has become an institution, standing out among other dining options due to its long history in the area.   This is seriously one of the best kept secrets in Ellijay!

The Chili Dog, one of the oldest restaurants in Ellijay, holds a special place in the local food scene and has been serving up great food since the 1950s. 

Breakfast at The Chili Dog is a hearty affair with an array of breakfast biscuit options, sandwiches, wraps, and huge hot and sticky Cinnamon buns that are wonderful!

For lunch and dinner, the restaurant's namesake dish, the chili dog, is a must-try. This isn't your average hot dog; it's a juicy, grilled frankfurter smothered in their signature homemade chili and topped with freshly grated cheese and onions. The balance of flavors is simply perfect, making it a standout dish worth coming back for.

They also have excellent hand pattied burgers, sandwiches and dinner plates as well.  Be sure to try the amazing onion rings!

While not fancy, do not be fooled.  The Chili Dog is not fancy, but it delivers great local food in a clean and super friendly atmosphere.  Our kind of place!

We visited Ellijay and really enjoyed it. Here are our top picks for the best things to do in Ellijay GA based on our experience and visit there in the summer of 2023.

Visit one of the many Apple Orchards

Ellijay GA is known as the "Apple Capital of Georgia" for good reason. The town is surrounded by beautiful apple orchards that offer visitors a chance to pick their own apples, enjoy delicious apple treats, and experience the charm of small-town Georgia all at the same time!

One of the most popular orchards in Ellijay is B.J. Reece Orchards. This family-owned orchard offers a wide variety of apples, as well as pumpkins, strawberries, and blueberries. Visitors can pick their own fruit, take a tractor ride, and enjoy delicious apple cider donuts and fried apple pies. B.J. Reece Orchards is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Ellijay.

Another great option is Hillcrest Orchards, which has been in operation for over 70 years. This orchard offers a petting zoo, a playground, and a corn maze in addition to apple picking. Visitors can also enjoy live music, hayrides, and delicious apple cider.

For a more unique experience, Ott Farms and Vineyard offers not only apple picking but also wine tastings. This family-owned orchard has been in operation for over 100 years and offers a wide variety of apples, including some rare and unique varieties.

R & A Orchards is another popular destination in Ellijay. This orchard offers not only apple picking, but also a farm store where visitors can purchase fresh produce, baked goods, and other local products.

Search for Sasquatch at Expedition Bigfoot

If you enjoy mystery, folklore, and history, be sure to visit Expedition Bigfoot, a Bigfoot Museum located just a few minutes outside of Ellijay in Cherry Log GA.

This unique and interesting museum explores the legend of Sasquatch and offers a fascinating look at the history of the area.

To be honest, we visited thinking it would be some cheesy tourist trap and not very interesting.  Were we ever wrong!   Expedition Bigfoot is a very nice museum, full of interesting exhibits, Bigfoot history, and some videos that will make you go "hmm".

While the museum isn't huge, it's definitely packed full of Bigfoot sighting information, artifacts, prints, and more.   Different exhibits highlight how "Bigfoot" like creatures have been seen all around the world.  The same type of creature, just different names, like Yeti.

They also have a really nice store full of Bigfoot memorabilia, souvenirs, shirts, mugs, stuffed animals, and more.   They feature art and books by local Ellijay and Blue Ridge artists as well.   We left with some shirts, socks, a book by a local author, and some Bigfoot chocolate.

While you may not believe in Bigfoot when you leave, you'll definitely be wondering if it's true and talking about it. We're not sure if Bigfoot exists or not, but something sure is going on.

Expedition Bigfoot was one of our favorite best things to do in Ellijay GA.

Go back in time at the Georgia Pinball Museum

If you're looking for a unique and entertaining experience in Ellijay, GA, look no further than the Georgia Pinball Museum. This museum is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves classic pinball machines.

Located just a short drive from Ellijay GA and right next door to Expedition Bigfoot, the Georgia Pinball Museum is a one-of-a-kind attraction that features vintage pinball machines from the 1950s to the 1990s. Visitors can play all of the machines, which are restored and maintained to ensure that they play just like they did when they were first released.

They have a number of classic machines pinball fans will love, including our favorite Kiss, Twilight Zone, wide-body machines, and the Black Knight!

The Georgia Pinball Museum is open seven days a week from 11am - 6pm, and admission is affordable, making it a great choice for families, couples, or groups of friends.

So grab some quarters and head on over for a blast from the past!

Explore Historic Downtown Ellijay

Of course, no visit to Ellijay would be complete without exploring the historic downtown.  Downtown Ellijay even has a town center with a roundabout and fountain in the middle.  The old town hall is there as well, and it very much resembles Hill Valley from the classic movie Back to the Future!

The charming downtown area is home to a variety of shops, boutiques, restaurants, galleries, and specialty stores. It's the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening.  

Many of the shops are located in buildings that date back to the 20th century, and you'll even find the classic old advertisement paintings on the side walls of buildings, which we enjoyed taking photos of.

There really is something for everyone in downtown Ellijay.  We really enjoyed walking around downtown and exploring all of the shops and stores.  We found antiques (more on that later), candy shops, soap shops, a dog store, and a home decor shop just to name a few.  

Two of our favorite stores were Green Willow Soap, where everything is handmade right there in the store, and The Bavarian Chocolatier which was full of goodies!

You should definitely plan to spend some time here.  To make your visit easier, be sure to stop by the Welcome Center and grab a map that has all of the stores marked.  This really helped us get around and made sure we saw everything.

Hiking Trails Near Ellijay GA

Ellijay has a number of really great hiking trails that are just a short drive from downtown Ellijay.   Popular Trails include:

Bear Creek Trail in Chattahoochee National Forest - Located in Bear Creek Recreation Area, about 30 minutes from down Ellijay, this trail will take you to the famous Gennett Poplar, the second largest tree in the state of Georgia.  Roundtrip to the tree and back is about 3-miles, and a moderate hike.

The Stone Tower Loop at Fort Mountain State Park - This 1-mile loop trail is popular for families and takes you to the old stone Fire Tower and natural rock gardens.  The trail is moderate in difficulty.

The Lake Loop Trail at Fort Mountain State Park - This 1.2-mile loop trail is open to both hikers and mountain bikers.  The trail goes around Fork Mountain’s lake.  We found it best to hike this trail clockwise to avoid the steep grade.  This is a really nice, relaxing, and beautiful hike.

Waterfalls near Ellijay GA

While not well known for waterfalls, there are a few waterfalls worth venturing out to and not far from downtown Ellijay.

Fall Branch Falls off the Benton MacKaye Trail - Located off a long and scenic service road, this is a short and moderate hike out to 75' tall Fall Branch Falls.   The falls have two large cascades.  This is a popular trail, so expect lots of company as you hike out.

Base of Falls Trail - Amicalola Falls State Park - Amicalola Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in the Georgia Blue Ridge.  It's also the tallest waterfall in Georgia at 729 feet.  The hike is short, but strenuous due to the nearly 200 stairs required to reach the base of the falls.  The total hike length is 1 mile.

Tumbling Waters Nature Trail at Carters Lake - While technically not a waterfall, it is a series of very pretty cascades.  The hike is 1-mile roundtrip, and very moderate.  You'll also cross a 30' tall wooden bridge, offering beautiful lake and creek views.

Taste Local Wine at Grapes and Ladders Winery

Grapes and Ladders is a beautiful winery located just a short drive from downtown Ellijay GA.   The vineyard offers a variety of wines for adults, wine slushes (which are amazing), and even grape slushies for teens and kids.   Yes, Grapes and Ladders is a family-friendly vineyard!

They offer a number of wines from sweet to dry, including both whites and reds and even a really nice port.  We're huge Cabernet Sauvignon fans, and theirs is one of the best we've ever had! 

They offer wine tastings, wine by the glass, and bottles of wine.  You can enjoy your wine in the indoor seating area, which is full of comfy chairs, or sit outside on the beautiful deck overlooking the vineyard and mountain views!

Grapes and Ladders is a casual and relaxing small vineyard, with super friendly staff and engaged owners.   The vineyard is beautiful, the wines fantastic, and the vineyard building is a great place to just grab a glass of wine and relax.  They even have live music on the weekends.

We really enjoyed our visit, and think you will too!  We even purchased a bottle of wine and port to bring back to our vacation cabin, where we staying for the weekend and literally just down the road from Grapes and Ladders.

Go Shopping in Ellijay

When it comes to shopping in Ellijay, we have a variety of options to choose from. Whether you're looking for unique gifts, antiques, or local produce, you'll find it.

One of our favorite places to shop is in downtown Ellijay. The historic downtown area is home to numerous shops and boutiques that offer a wide range of products. From handmade crafts to clothing and jewelry, you're sure to find something that catches your eye.

The charming and friendly atmosphere of the downtown area makes for a fun shopping experience as well!

Many of the local merchants have downtown maps available for free that provide a list of all of the stores.  You can also pick up one at the visitors center right there downtown.

Experience the Ellijay Farmers & Artisans Market

If you would like to experience local culture and support local artists, businesses and craft makers, don't miss the Ellijay Farmers & Artisans Market.  

The market is each Saturday from 8:30am - 12:30pm in the parking lot behind the downtown Ellijay Welcome Center.   When we recently visited, there were 6 rows of vendors with a wide array of goods from custom-made jewelry, home decor items, soaps, body and bath products, and of course fresh produce.

For those who want to experience the local culture, we recommend checking out the farmers' markets. Ellijay is known for its fresh produce, and the farmers' market is a fantastic way to sample some of the best fruits and vegetables in the area. You can also see locally-made crafts and baked goods as well.

We really enjoyed visiting each of the local vendors, browsing their goods, and talking with them.   Everyone made us feel so welcome.   Of course, we had to take home a few items, including a necklace for our daughter and some homemade soap.

Discover Bygones at Antique Shops

If you're a fan of antiques, you will love Ellijay GA. Ellijay is almost as well known for its wide variety of antique stores as it is its apples!

There are a number of very nice antique shops located throughout the city, each with its own unique collection of items. Many stores are located in the historic downtown area, like Antiques on North Main, Linda's Outback Antiques, and Main Street Antiques & Collectibles.   

There are also a number of antique shops outside of the main town area as well.

In all of these antique shops, you can find everything from vintage furniture to rare collectibles.  You can literally spend an entire finding and browsing the wonderful antique shops in Ellijay.

• Treats Trail - This Sweets Trail is to enjoy a little dessert and earn some cool prizes!  All you have to do is visit participating businesses, get stamps, and receive a Treats trail prize!
• Antiques Trail - This trail allows you to explore son wonderful Ellijay GA antique shops, find that hidden treasure you've been looking and earn a one-of-a-kind Antiques Trail prize.
• Sips Trail - This one is our favorite!   Yes, believe it, you can taste some of the amazing Ellijay Winery wines and earn a one-of-a-kind Sips Trail prize!   No, we're not lying, you can drink wine and earn prizes ... unreal right?

For each of these, all you have to do is:

1. Pick up your passport at the Ellijay Visitor Center or a participating vendor.
2. Make purchases at some of the participating trail businesses and get stamped at check out.  The number of required purchases and list of participating businesses is on the passport.
3. Return to the visitor center with your stamped passport, and get your prize (one per customer)

We're foodies, and one of the highlights of our visits to cities and towns in the Blue Ridge Mountains is checking out the local restaurant scene.   Fortunately, Ellijay GA has plenty of great restaurant options to choose from. From quick bites to fine dining, you'll find great restaurants and food that not only satisfy your tastebuds but your budget too! 

Here are just a few of our picks for the best restaurants in Ellijay GA:

Bev's Diner

Bev's Diner serves up some of the best burgers and fries we've had anywhere, all with a 50s-style diner atmosphere.  The menu is full of different types of burgers.  All of them are made from local Ellijay beef, made to order, and the fries are hand-cut.  

The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the shakes and floats are divine.  Be sure to try the butterscotch shake.  You'll thank us later.

The Pink Pig

Located in Cherry Log, just outside of Ellijay GA, you'll be hard-pressed to find better BBQ and fixins than at the Pink Pig.    The folks here smoke the ribs, pulled pork, and even brisket to perfection. 

Go early and don't forget your appetite.  The Pink Pig is open seven days a week, so be sure to stop by for the best BBQ around!  We will definitely be back.

The Roof

For a unique dining experience, head up to the top of the tallest building in downtown Ellijay GA to The Roof.   The restaurant and bar are literally on the top of a building providing exceptional views of downtown Ellijay and the surrounding mountains.  

The food and service were good, and they even serve local fresh Trout.   You'll definitely want to have a drink or meal here while enjoying the great views.

Ellijay Coffeehouse

We love a cozy and warm coffee house that serves great coffee, and Ellijay Coffeehouse is the bomb.  If you're looking for a cozy spot to grab a cup of coffee or tea, this is the place to go.

They have a great selection of drinks, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches all served up in a comfortable atmosphere that is perfect for waking up and relaxing.  The service was top-notch, with super friendly and professional staff.  Try the lemon loaf and the breakfast Pannini!

Express your artistic side at BEAU-tiful Creations

Located in downtown Ellijay, BEAU-tiful Creations is a walk-in art studio where artistic ability is required!   They provide everything you need, including canvases, door hangers, birdhouses, magnets, paper, jewelry, and more.

You can let your creative side go wild.  They even have stencils to help you get started AND the owners are there to guide and help you.

This is fun for the whole family and a great way to have some quality and fun one on one time with the kids.   They also have adult-only events.   Definitely check out this unique and fun place.

Go boating at Carter Lake

Not far from Ellijay is Carter Lake, which provides a number of outdoor activities including boating.

Boating at Carter Lake near Ellijay, GA is a popular activity for both locals and tourists. Carter Lake is the deepest lake in Georgia, with depths reaching up to 450 feet, and its sparkling waters and rugged shoreline provide beautiful surroundings for a variety of recreational opportunities.

For those looking to rent a boat, Carters Lake Marina & Resort is the place to go. They offer pontoon boat rentals for a day on the lake, and if you plan to stay overnight, they also offer pontoon/cabin packages.

Carter Lake has five boat ramps, making it easy to access the lake from any point. Boaters can explore the 6-mile impoundment and take in the scenery of the beautiful foothills in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northwest Georgia.

It's important to note that Carter Lake is a national forest, and there are only three campgrounds and five boat ramps as the only shoreline developments on the lake. Visitors should take care to respect the natural environment and follow all rules and regulations to ensure the lake remains a beautiful and sustainable destination for years to come.

Where is Helen Georgia?

Helen GA is in White County, Georgia, on the Chattahoochee River. Georgia Highway 75 runs right through and is the main road used to access Helen.

The town is about 100 miles north of Atlanta, in the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains. The mountains surround the town and sits at an elevation of 1,400ft.

History of Helen Georgia

On August 18, 1913, Georgia officially established the town of Helen GA. John E. Mitchell of St. Louis laid the town out. A local lumber official recommended his daughter's name as the name for the town. Since many of the town's citizens worked for the lumber company, very few argued, and they used the name Helen.

As the lumber business declined, the city re-branded itself in 1969 as a Bavarian themed tourist town. Today, tourism is the key to Helen's success and economy. Helen has become one of the Georgia's most popular tourist attractions, especially in the Fall during its popular Oktoberfest.

By far, the largest event for Helen GA is Oktoberfest, which begins in September, and runs through the first week of November.  Oktoberfest has been Helen tradition for over 50 years.  

The event includes multiple weeks of beer, food, dancing, and singing. Oktoberfest in Helen GA is the longest running celebration of its kind in the United States!

They hold the event in the city's Festhalle.

You'll also find many merrymakers of all kinds (and from all over), dressed in traditional German attire, including lederhosen and dirndls, and there is no shortage of polka music!   

Oktoberfest begins in September with the Oktoberfest Parade. Similar to the real-deal in Germany, celebrations differ from week to week, and from weekdays to weekends.

Weekends are more popular with tourism and young college groups, while weekdays are more family-friendly.

Oktoberfest in Helen Georgia is open to all ages, and there is an admission fee, which does not include food and drink.

During the week, the event begins at 6 p.m. throughout the week and at 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Christmas in Helen GA is truly a magical and wonderful experience.  Who can turn down an Alpine themed town, decorated to the hilt with Christmas decorations?  Hard to resist, right?

Lighting of the Village

Christmas in Helen GA begins shortly after the completion of Oktoberfest and opens with the Lighting of the Village ceremony the day after Thanksgiving. 

On Friday, the village lights up to begin the holiday season, and Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at Riverside Park. Local groups play Christmas music the whole time, and children can meet with Santa from 5PM to 7PM.

Christkindlmarkt at Marktplatz

Christkindlmarkt is a traditional German event that offers everything from unique Christmas decorations, gifts and assortments of sweet and savory foods, drinks and candied holiday treats. 

These treats, fill the town with Yuletide scents like mulled wine, freshly baked cookies, and other baked goods.  

You'll find Helen’s Christkindlmarkt in Helen's downtown Marketplatz, where plenty of merchants sell gifts and treats.  The event has grown so much that it expanded into Helen's Festhalle for 2021.

At Christkindlmarkt, you'll find lots of holiday themed handmade crafts, ornaments, decorations for your home, and more. You'll also find delicious fudge, candied apples and more freshly baked goods than you'll know what to do with.  

Annual Christmas Parade

Of course no Christmas is complete in a small mountain town, without a Christmas Parade, and Helen GA has a fantastic one! 

Each year, they schedule for the Parade around the 2nd week in December. Your family will love the display of hand-crafted and beautifully designed floats, characters, and horse-drawn carriages that parade through town starting at 2pm.

Oh, and did we mention lots of sweet treats are tossed to the kids (and yes, you adults as well) along the way? 

The mile-long parade begins at the Helen Welcome Center, behind on Edelweiss, goes west, then turns on Chattahoochee Street, then right onto Main Street and ends at Betty's Country Store. 

You can watch the parade from Edelweiss Strasse, Chataloochee Street, or North Main Street.

Things to do in Helen GA

Rather than ask what to do in Helen Georgia, it would be easier to answer what not to do. Helen itself is full of things to do, and surrounded by even more things to do, within a short drive.

Just a few of the many things you can do in Helen GA are:

Accessing Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway

The byway begins north of Robertstown, GA at the intersection of GA-75 and GA-75 Alternate, near Helen GA.

Go north from Helen, Georgia on highway 17-75 approximately 2 and a half miles and make a left onto alternate highway 17 may also be marked GA 356.  You made the correct turn if cross the bridge over the Chattahoochee River. A short drive thru the foothills of White County will bring you to GA 348, a forestry sign reading Russell-Brasstown Scenic By-Way will tell you to take a right turn onto GA 348.

Chattahoochee National Forest

As you begin your drive on GA 348, you not only enter Chattahoochee National Forest, but you also begin your ascent into the highest elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia.  Many call this the "rooftop of the North Georgia Mountains.

Dukes Creek Falls and Trailhead

On your left, not far up GA 348 is the trailhead and parking area for Dukes Creek Falls.  The parking area provides a beautiful view of the Georgia lowlands, and Yonah Mountain.

If you take the path along the side of the parking area you’ll arrive at an observation deck for Dukes Creek Falls. If you continue on the trail, past the observation deck, the trail will take you down below the falls for a closer view.  Just be aware that the climb back up is strenuous!

Raven Cliffs Falls Trail

Continuing on GA 348, you'll continue your beautiful ascent up into the mountains, and arrive soon at the road and parking area for Raven Cliffs Falls Trail.  Turn left onto the road to reach the parking area.  This is a very popular trail, that will take you down to Raven Cliffs Falls along the Dodd's Creek.  The trail is a 4.9 mile roundtrip hike, and moderate in difficulty.

This trail is one of the most beautiful in all of North Georgia.    The hike follows a beautiful, rushing trout stream in a shady, moss-filled forest, that will make you feel as though you are in middle earth.  You will soon find massive rock cliffs, and Raven Cliffs Falls pouring down 40 foot through a crevasse and down the cliffs.

Continuing on GA 348

Returning to GA 348 you'll continue on your drive, and ascent upward.  The byway continues to wind through the Chattahoochee National Forest.  Along the way, in this section, you’ll come to several overlooks.  The higher up you climb, the bigger the views.

Just prior to reaching the summit of the byway, an overlook on the left looks down onto North Georgia’s Dahlonega Gold Belt.  Here you'll get a full view of Yonah Mountain, with the its large cliff face.  The Georgia Piedmont stretches across the horizon, providing very long range views. 

Once past the overlook, you'll continue to climb the curve up to Hogpen Gap, and you'll cross the famous Appalachian Trail as it crossed the road here.  This is a great place to stop, take a break, enjoy the views, and even hike on the famous AT, just so you can say you did!

Just past the AT parking lot is another overlook into the Blue Ridge Mountains.  The view from this overlook  is spectacular and one of the best you'll see!

Descending Down GA 348

From the last overlook, you'll begin a very steep descent down.  The descent will continue for miles, as you slowly work your way down to the base of the mountain.   At the bottom, you'll continue on GA 348, passing relatively flat pasture land until GA 348 ends.

At the intersection of GA 348 and and GA 180, you'll take a right on GA 180.  You'll begin another long ascent up to the entrance of Brasstown Bald on the left.

Brasstown Bald

After entering Brasstown Bald park, a winding and steep paved road will take you to the upper parking lot, just below the bald itself.

Directly next to the parking lot is a visitor center and gift shop.  The trailhead to the top of the bald is there as well.  

The trail to the top is paved and very steep, and is about a 1 mile roundtrip walk/hike.  If you can't walk or prefer not to walk, you can pay a fee for the tour bus ride up and back.   

The top of Brasstown Bald has a large wooden observation deck with a stone tower, which is closed.   There is also a museum at the top, next to the observation tower.   The views are the highlight of your visit and are amazing.   From the top, you can see all of the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains, and even parts of the same range in North Carolina.

Brasstown Bald is the highest point in the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains at 4,784 feet.

High Schoals Creek Falls/Blue Hole Falls

After leaving Brasstown Bald, you'll continue left on GA 180 then turn right on GA 17.  You'll see the trailhead and parking area for High Schoals Falls on your right, shortly after.

This is a great hike, where in a short distance (2-miles roundtrip) you'll see two of the most beautiful GA waterfalls!   

You hike begins at the trailhead, located off gravel forest service road 283.  The trail descends into the forest, where you will be surrounded by old-growth trees and mountain laurel.  The trail slowly approaches High Schoals Creek, which you will soon hear as you hike closer to it.  You'll pass through a campground before crossing the creek.

The trail passes through more campsites, and you'll reach a small bridge just before the sidepath that takes you down to Blue Hole Falls.   As you reach the falls, you'll see a blue hole at the base, with Blue Hole Falls above it, hence the name.

Continue on the main trail to High Schoals Falls.  Some old stone stairs will lead you down to the falls.

Return the way you came, but it's an unrelenting climb back up.

Back to Helen

You'll return to GA 17, and drive back to Helen GA to complete your adventure on the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway in Georgia.

There are a number of additional hiking trails and few more waterfalls we didn't mention in this guide, as we focused on the bigger highlights, but we encourage you to explore all the different trails and options along this beautiful and wonderful scenic drive.
