</div><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element"><h2 id="t-1622740004040" class="">Tips for Visiting Chimney Rock</h2><p>We've been visiting Chimney Rock State Park since the 1990s when it was privately owned. &nbsp; Here are some tips we've learned over the years to help make your visit more enjoyable:</p><ul class=""><li>When visiting in the summer or if you are a photographer, arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon. &nbsp; The lighting is better, and the temperatures are cooler. &nbsp;Midday sun can be very hot during the day, so bring sunscreen.</li><li>For fewer crowds, visit during the week. &nbsp;Weekends are always the busiest times.</li><li>Dress comfortably, and be aware that it can be cooler and more windy up at the Chimney level than it is down in Chimney Rock Village.</li><li>Wear comfortable shoes, either hiking boots or tennis shoes. &nbsp;Sandals and dress shoes do not work well at all.</li><li>Grab a park map, and visit all of the great locations like the Grotto, Subway and Opera box.</li><li>Dogs are allowed in the park and on trails, but must be on a leash, and are not allowed in the Elevator.</li><li>Bathrooms are located at the top of the parking lot across from the gift shop, where you catch the Elevator. &nbsp; They are also located in Sky Lounge at the Chimney level and at the Meadows.</li><li>Be sure to visit Chimney Rock Village for a little shopping, food, and an overnight stay.</li><li>If you plan to hike, bring some water, or buy some at the gift shop prior to hitting the trail.</li><li>If you visit the waterfall, be smart. &nbsp;Don't climb up on the rocks, and be careful getting in the water - the rocks are slick!</li><li>If you bring children, keep them close. &nbsp; While there is safety fencing, and the park is family safe, some of the areas you will be close to having very long and sheer drops right next to the trails and overlooks. &nbsp;Be safe!</li></ul><h2 id="t-1622740004041" class="">Chimney Rock Village</h2><p>Chimney Rock Village sits just below the high cliffs of Chimney Rock State Park and surrounds the entrance to the park. &nbsp;Chimney Rock Village primarily caters to visitors of the state park and nearby Lake Lure. &nbsp;</p></div><div class="thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption" data-css="tve-u-179d3139708"><span class="tve_image_frame"><img decoding="async" class="tve_image wp-image-1510475" alt="View of Chimney Rock Village from Chimney Rock" data-id="1510475" width="940" data-init-width="2048" height="627" data-init-height="1365" title="View of Chimney Rock Village from Chimney Rock" loading="lazy" src="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/12IMG_8419.jpg" data-width="940" data-height="627" style="aspect-ratio: auto 2048 / 1365;" srcset="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/12IMG_8419.jpg 2048w, https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/12IMG_8419-300x200.jpg 300w, https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/12IMG_8419-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/12IMG_8419-768x512.jpg 768w, https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/12IMG_8419-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" /></span></div><div class="thrv_wrapper thrv_text_element"><p>The village is full of unique locally owned shops, restaurants, hotels, motels, and Inns.</p><h3 id="t-1622740004042" class="">Shopping and Dining</h3><p>All around the entrance to Chimney Rock State Park are a number of locally owned shops and restaurants. &nbsp; Many carry Chimney Rock memorabilia, along with local arts and crafts. &nbsp; There are small ice cream shops, coffee shops, candy stores and more.</p><p>While visiting, we've eaten a Medinas and Riverwatch Bar &amp; Grill. &nbsp; We enjoyed both. &nbsp; We also got a great cup of coffee at Coffee on the Rocks, before we left for home.</p><h3 id="t-1622740004043" class="">Staying Overnight</h3><p>There are a number of options for overnight stays in the area, the majority of them are locally owned and often very historic businesses. &nbsp; Over the years, we've stayed overnight at two places: The Lake Lure Inn, the <a href="http://www.fibbermagees.com" target="_blank" class="" style="outline: none;" rel="noopener">Fibber Magees</a> and The Willowbrook Inn.</p><p>We enjoyed all of them very much. &nbsp; We've also heard great things about The Esmeralda Inn &amp; Restaurant, but have not personally stayed there.</p><h2 class="" id="t-1622740004073">History of Chimney Rock</h2><p>We won't go into the details of the history, because there is an excellent and very thorough book written by the previous directory of Chimney Rock that you can buy and read.&nbsp;</p></div><div class="thrv_wrapper tve_image_caption" data-css="tve-u-179d31e624e"><span class="tve_image_frame"><a href="https://amzn.to/2RZs1wV" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img decoding="async" class="tve_image wp-image-1510481" alt="" data-id="1510481" width="333" data-init-width="333" height="499" data-init-height="499" title="for-the-love-of-chimney-rock" loading="lazy" src="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/for-the-love-of-chimney-rock.jpg" data-width="333" data-height="499" data-link-wrap="true" style="aspect-ratio: auto 333 / 499;" srcset="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/for-the-love-of-chimney-rock.jpg 333w, https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/for-the-love-of-chimney-rock-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px" /></a></span></div><div class="tcb_flag" style="display: none"></div>

<p>The second most visible feature of Chimney Rock State Park from Chimney Rock village is the 404 foot tall Hickory Nut Falls. The waterfall is accessible via the Hickory Nut Falls Trail, inside the park.</p>
<p>This 1.5 mile round trip and easy &#8211; moderate hike leads you through the dense woods below the high cliff faces of Chimney Rock, to the base of Hickory Nut Falls. At the base, you&#8217;ll find picnic tables, a large observation deck, and a pool of water deep enough to wade in.</p>
<p>Hickory Nut Falls is one of the &#8220;must-see&#8221; attractions at Chimney Rock, and often draws a large crowd, especially in the summer.</p>
<figure id="attachment_5073" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-5073" style="width: 641px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-5073" src="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/36IMG_8529-e1495841128969.jpg" alt="Hickory Nut Falls Base" width="641" height="427" srcset="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/36IMG_8529-e1495841128969.jpg 641w, https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/36IMG_8529-e1495841128969-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-5073" class="wp-caption-text">Visitors enjoying the water at Hickory Nut Falls</figcaption></figure>

<p>Hickory Nut Falls is also somewhat of a movie star, as it was featured in the blockbuster movie,Last of the Mohicans. In fact, the last 17 minutes of the movie were filmed in Chimney Rock State Park, both at the top of Hickory Nut Falls, and along the old Cliff Trail that used to take you there. Sadly, the trail is no longer open.</p>
<p>The climactic fight scene at the end of the movie was filmed just feet from the top edge of Hickory Nut Falls, and Hickory Nut Gorge is clearly visible in the background.</p>
<h2>Hickory Nut Falls Trail</h2>
<p>Hickory Nut Falls Trail is the 1.5 mile round-trip trail to the base of the falls. The trail begins at the trailhead, just below the Chimney Rock parking lot. There used to be a set of stairs that led down from the Chimney Rock parking lot level, but those stairs are currently being rebuilt.</p>
<figure id="attachment_5074" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-5074" style="width: 300px" class="wp-caption alignleft"><img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-5074" src="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/33IMG_8505-e1495842372818.jpg" alt="Hickory Nut Falls" width="300" height="450" srcset="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/33IMG_8505-e1495842372818.jpg 300w, https://blueridgemountainlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/33IMG_8505-e1495842372818-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-5074" class="wp-caption-text">Hickory Nut Falls, from the trail</figcaption></figure>
<p>As a result, you&#8217;ll have to walk down to the bottom of the parking lot, and around the turn and down the road a bit to the trailhead, which is clearly visible.  There is no parking around the trailhead itself. Parking is available only in the main parking lot.</p>
<p>The trail takes you through the dense forest below the cliffs of Chimney top. If you look up through the tree canopy, you&#8217;ll see the cliffs rising high above you. The trail makes a gradual incline up to the base of Hickory Nut Falls.</p>
<p>As you hike, you&#8217;ll see a number of interesting geological features and signs with educational information about the various features.  If you pay attention, you&#8217;ll also see many types of birds and wildflowers as well.</p>
<p>Dogs are welcome in the park in general, and also on this trail.  They just need to be on a leash at all times.</p>
<p>Admission to Chimney Rock State Park is required in order to access and hike this trail. See our <a href="https://blueridgemountainlife.com/chimney-rock-state-park/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chimney Rock State Park Guide </a>for more information on tickets, and other trails in the park.</p>
<h2>Hickory Nut Falls Video</h2>
<p>Here is a video I took at the falls during our recent visit (May 2017).  My apologies for the background noise, there were lots of people.</p>
