Emerald Village Gem Mine

Many don't realize, but there was a gold rush in Western North Carolina many years ago, and mines sprouted up all over, and especially in the area where Emerald Village is today.  Emerald Village contains 12 mines, and the Bon Ami cleaning agent was produced at Emerald village for many years.

Guests at Emerald Village NC can pan for gems and gold, take the Emerald Village NC Black Light Tour, visit the three-story museum, and more. Emerald Village is open every day from April 1st through October 31st and is located 3 miles from the Little Switzerland exit on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Hyalite Opal at Emerald Village

There are several reasons why this mineral and event are special and deserve a visit but, two in particular stand out:

While hyalite opal in its natural state doesn’t appear to be much to look at, mostly just a clear buildup that seems pretty boring and is seemingly just a part of the rock it’s on. However, despite its average and mundane appearances, it hides an amazing feature: when exposed to UV light it glows green!

This is caused by it being ever so slightly radioactive, but don’t fret, its not enough for you to worry about and the only negative side-effect of visiting is that you will want more time here!

Now, I said there were two reasons, so what’s the other? In a word- Location. Normally, hyalite opal is mostly found at gem shows, online, and occasionally in small quantities in privately owned or active mines and not somewhere you can easily visit.

However, the Bon Ami mine has the largest naturally forming deposit AND is the only publicly accessible underground mine where you can see hyalite opal in the world!

The Emerald Village NC Black Light Tour

When you think of a “mine” you probably conjure up images of a labyrinth of tunnels and caves and think of being in small, enclosed areas.

But this mine is different.

As you enter the mine site to start the Emerald Village NC Black Light Tour, you find yourself standing in the middle of a single, large, excavated cavern.

Once inside, you can walk among some relics of a mining age that’s long past- see the old mining carts and read the information and history posted around the mine while you wait for the show to start.

One thing you will notice, however, is that while the space is very large and open, it seems plain and unassuming. That is until the lights go out… Then the view goes from ordinary, to pitch black, to a new sight: a mesmerizing world of green!

Throughout the mine there are tour guides with hand held lights giving visitors a better look at certain deposits and giving those around an in-depth presentation of the area, formations, other sights to note, as well as answering questions.

While Emerald Village NC Black Light Tour alone is worth going to see, it doesn’t just end once you’ve seen the inside of the mine.

Once you have seen the inside and start making your way out and back to the entrance, tour guides are posted along the way to point out other deposits and spots where more previously hidden sights are now illuminated by black light.

This includes other minerals, more opal, and even a form of moss that glows blue!

Other Things to do Nearby

Emerald Village is actually a collection of buildings and during the day they offer plenty of activities such as gold panning, gem mining, a museum, and more.

Just remember, the stores all close in the evening and there is a bit of downtime between those activities and when the mine store opens back up for the black light show.

In the meantime, Little Switzerland and Spruce Pine are close by, so there is plenty of other nearby places to visit during a trip to the area.

Here are some tips to help make your visit to Emerald City Gem Mine, and specifically the Emerald Village NC Black Light Tour more enjoyable!

• It is underground (the temperature can get chilly, especially later at night), bring a jacket.
• Be careful when moving about, especially once the lights have been switched over, there are
  tracks and some uneven ground.
• Get there a few minutes early, after you check in, you can look around the gift shop and then
  go explore the museum area attached to it.
• If you bring a camera or try to take pictures with your phone, remember to turn the flash off.
  With it on, you won’t get a good shot of the green glow!
• This event only takes place on 10 Saturday evenings though the months of May-October and
  normally sells out well in advance, so some planning and looking ahead may be necessary if you
  want to come see this.

Where is Bon Ami Mine?

The Bon Ami Mine is located in Emerald Village, Mitchell County, North Carolina and is the mine used for the Emerald Village NC Black Light Tour. It is a former feldspar mine that was operated by the Whitehall Company from 1924 to 1950.

The mine is now open to the public for tours, and it is a popular destination for gem hunters.

The Bon Ami Mine is known for its deposits of hyalite opal, a type of opal that is found in this area. Under shortwave ultraviolet light, the hyalite opal in the mine glows a vivid lime green. How do I get to Emerald Village?

Emerald Village Mine is located just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, about 3 miles from the Little Switzerland exit (milepost 334). To get to the mine from the Parkway, follow these directions:

1. Take the Little Switzerland exit (milepost 334).
2. Loop back around and go back underneath the Parkway on Chestnut Grove Road.
3. Go one mile and turn left onto McKinney Mine Road.
4. Follow McKinney Mine Road for 2 miles and Emerald Village Mine will be on your right.

What are Mountain Coasters?

Mountain Coasters, often called Alpine coasters, offer an incredibly smooth ride where you'll fly down a mountainside, full of sharp and banked turns, in a private car (called sleds) that generally carries one to two riders. The sleds are fully gravity-driven from the top of the mountain down, making them quiet and smooth.  

As you are zooming down, incredible views and beautiful forests surround you. The individual sleds even provide their own speed control, so you can adjust the ride to your desired excitement level.

New mountain coasters are popping up in many locations throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains, and we expect many more over the coming years.   

For now, here are some of the very best mountain coasters in the Blue Ridge Mountains for you to experience and enjoy!

These are in no particular order and all are tons of fun!

1 - Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster - Pigeon Forge TN

Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is the longest downhill mountain coaster run in the United States, with over 1-mile of track. On the way down, you can control your speed, but you can reach up to 27mph. The ridge takes about 7-8 minutes from start to finish and is pure fun the whole way down.  

Vehicles handle up to 2-riders, but are easily controlled and ridden by just one as well. The ride down provides gorgeous views of the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains, and also has several large straight sections so you can really pick up some speed.  

They are open in most weather and year-round.

2 - Goats on the Roof Goat Coaster - Pigeon Forge TN

Not only will you get to see real goats on the roof, you can also ride the 1/2 mile long Goat Coaster at Goats on the Roof in Pigeon Forge TN. The ride down from the top takes about 7-minutes to travel along the 4,875-foot coaster to the bottom. The ride down offers beautiful mountain views along their silky smooth tracks.   

Like other mountain coasters, the vehicles are designed for up to two people, but controllable by one. Riders can adjust their speed and brake to tweak the ride to their own "thrill level". Maximum speed is about 27mph.

While visiting, ride the Goat Coaster, see the goats, visit their gift shop, and go gem mining.

3 - Rocky Top Mountain Coaster - Pigeon Forge TN

Enjoy 9 minutes of sharp turns, 360 degree twists, tunnels and more on the Rocky Top Mountain Coaster in Pigeon Forge TN. Rocky Top Mountain Coaster is the longest mountain coaster in east TN, and has FOUR (yes four) uplifts to get to the top!   

The total run is 3,888 feet from start to finish. You'll ride in a vehicle that will handle up to 2 people, and speeds are fully controllable. Maximum speed is up to 30mph.

Rocky Top Mountain Coaster also offers night time rides, where magnificent lights guide you through a magical thrill filled ride night time ride.

4 - Ripley's Mountain Coaster - Gatlinburg TN

Ripley's is well known throughout the world and in the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg areas as well, for its attractions, museum, and aquarium.

Ripley's Mountain Coaster in Gatlinburg TN is another popular Ripley's attraction, where you can ride a gravity fed sled down the side of a mountain with speeds up to 30mph!

The ride is short for a mountain coaster, at only 45 seconds and the shortest on our list, but it has several twists and turns which make for a short but thrilling ride at top speeds.

5 - Moonshine Mountain Coaster - Gatlinburg TN

Moonshine Mountain Coaster, in Gatlinburg TN is Gatlinburg's FIRST and NEWEST mountain coaster. The coaster was Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster, and was bought out by new owners and renovated with newer and safer technology.

The mountain coaster offers single or double rider cars that coast down through the beautiful Smoky Mountains for about 2 minutes, with the full ride being 5 minutes from start to finish. You can reach speeds of up to 30 mph. Who knows, you might even see a bear! It would not be the first time.

Moonshine Mountain Coaster is open year-round, even during rain or snow.   

6 - Rail Runner - Anakeesta in Gatlinburg TN

In our round-up of Blue Ridge Mountain area Mountain Coasters, Rail Runner at Anakeesta in Gatlinburg TN is unique and was the first of its kind in the United States.  

Rail Runner is a single-rail mountain coaster that features a 1,600 foot with over 400 feet of elevation changes. The ride has downhill twists and turns and a max speed of 25 mph.

Like other coasters, the sled holds up to 2 people and provides individual brake control for each sled. The single rail really increases the thrill of the ride and provides a more "floating and gliding" sensation as you shoot down the mountain.

They even have a Hellbender Mountain Coaster promising even more thrills and excitement.  We're hoping to check that out soon!

7 - Ski Mountain Coaster - Ober Gatlinburg TN

Ober Gatlinburg is a popular and well-known attraction in Gatlinburg TN and they offer a great mountain coaster as well. Ski Mountain Coaster at Ober Gatlinburg TN provides a relaxing ride to the top with incredible views, followed by an exhilarating ride to the bottom full of twists, dips, and turns.

The ride down the mountain is 2750 feet and can reach speeds of up to 25mph. Like other mountain coasters, the sleds are for 1 or 2 people, and the speed can be controlled by a braking system. This allows riders to adjust the ride speed for their comfort. The ride lasts for about 5.5 minutes from start to finish.

8 - Georgia Mountain Coaster - Helen GA

Georgia's very first mountain coaster is located right in downtown Helen GA, The Georgia Mountain Coaster is fun for the whole family!   

Riders can control their own speed down the nearly 1-mile-long run, by using brakes on the sleds. Sleds can accommodate up to 2 riders for the up to 28mph run down the mountain. The run features many twists and turns, with several 360-degree turns as well. The total run is about 4 minutes long and is super fun.

9 - Wilderness Run Mountain Coaster - Banner Elk NC

Wilderness Run Mountain Coaster in Banner Elk NC is the very first mountain coaster in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The coaster features a 2400-foot run with speeds up to 27mph. The long run features several 360-degree turns around trees and large boulders, along with beautiful scenic views on the way down.

The ride is about 7 minutes long, and each car can handle 2 riders. Like other mountain coasters, riders can control their own speed and braking on the way down.  

They are open 7 days a week, during all seasons. While there, visit the adventure course and gift shop as well.

10 - Scaly Mountain Screamer at Highlands Outpost

Near the beautiful town of Highlands NC, Highlands Outpost is the longest mountain coaster in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The Scaly Mountain Screamer is a 3800-foot run that provides incredible views and sharp 360-degree turns on your way down.

The run lasts about 6 minutes, and riders shoot down the mountain on sleds designed for 1-2 riders.  Each sled has an individual braking system that allows you to customize the level of speed (and thrill) to your personal limits.

North Carolina

The state with the most mountain snow tubing options is North Carolina.  NC also offers some of the best skiing venues in the Blue Ridge Mountains as well.

Here are our top picks for the best snow tubing in North Carolina:

Beech Mountain Snow Tubing - Beech Mountain NC

Beech Mountain Resort in Beech Mountain NC offers some of the best skiing and snow tubing in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Beech Mountain Snow Tubing park is one of the newest as is a state-of-the-art snow tubing location, locate at the Alpine village at the bottom of the ski slopes.

The slopes offer 8 extra long runs that are lighted and have a full sound system.   A Magic Carpet conveyor takes tubers quickly back up the top for more runs.

In the Alpine village, you'll find food and warm drinks, an ice skating rink, and shopping.

Tubers must be 42" or taller to ride, and children are not allowed to ride with their parents.   Tickets can be purchased in advance during their normal season.

After a busy day of tubing, be sure to visit one of the great local restaurants in Beech Mountain, the highest town in North Carolina.

Black Bear Snow Tubing - Hendersonville NC

Located just outside of Hendersonville NC, Black Bear Snow Tubing is a family-owned and operated snow tubing park that offers a tubing hill that runs 600ft long with an 80ft drop!  They use state-of-the-art snowmaking equipment to provide real snow on their multiple and wide lanes.

Black Bear Snow tubing also offers a heated lodge for non-tubers that just want to watch and stay warm.   Concessions, hot drinks, food, and an on-location playground are also offered to guests.

Be sure to visit the wonderful mountain town of Hendersonville NC for great food, attractions, and fun!  Chimney Rock and Lake Lure are also nearby.

Frozen Falls Tube Park - Sapphire NC

Frozen Falls Tube Park is part of Sapphire Valley Resort and is located in Sapphire NC. The resort offers skiing, lodging, snowboarding, and of course tubing.   The Snow tubing slopes offer a 500-foot-long tube run with a 60-foot vertical drop for pure snow tubing fun that is super family-friendly.

After sliding down, you go back up by riding the moving sidewalk back to the top.  This is very similar to the moving walkways at major airports.  

Frozen Falls Tube Park has no age restrictions for riders.   However, each person must be in their own tube.  Parents can hold on to their child's tube using the handles when tubing down.

Hawksnest Snow Tubing - Seven Devils NC

Hawksnest Snow Tubing is the biggest snow tubing venue in the Blue Ridge Mountains and on the east coast of the United States.   It was previously a ski resort, but converted to snow tubing in 2008, as a result, it has plenty of space.   Hawksnest offers 30 different runs, broken up into 4 different sections.  They all offer carpet conveyor lifts for quick and easy trips back to the top.  

The snow tubing runs range from 400 feet to over 1000 feet in length!   Tubing is available for adults and children ages 3 years and up.

Hawksnest also offers a winter zipline tour that soars above the tubing lanes for you to enjoy as well.   Be sure to check out their live webcam.

Highlands Outpost - Scaly Mountain NC

Located near Highlands NC, Highlands Outpost offers 4 lanes of snow tubing excitement.  The Magic carpet will take you quickly back up to the top for more runs.   In addition to natural snow, they also have professional snow-making equipment to maintain a solid base and slippery slopes.  

Riders must be 42 inches or taller, and a minimum of 4 years old to ride.  For younger children, Kids Snow Play is available.

While there you can also enjoy ice skating and a ride on the Screamer mountain coaster, which operates year-round.

Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park - Newland NC

Located near Morganton NC and Boone NC, Jonas Ridge Snow Tubing Park provides multiple lanes of 400-foot runs, and claim to have the fastest slopes.   For a quick ride back to the top, they offer a convenient conveyor system.

While they have no age restriction, they do recommend ages 3 and up.   Children are required to ride in their own tubes while a parent in their own tube can hold their tube.

Jonas Ridge also provides excellent viewing areas for watching the tubers shoot down the hill.   Refreshments such as chips, candy, hot chocolate, soda, water, and coffee are also available.

Moonshine Mountain Snow Tubing Park - Hendersonville NC

Moonshine Mountains Snow Tubing Park, located just outside of Hendersonville NC offers 500-foot-long snow tubing runs with 3 lanes for tubing.    After a thrilling downhill run, you can make your way back to the top by walking up the stairs, or using the lift. 

Snow tubing can really build up a thirst and make you hungry, and Moonshine Mountain Snow Tubing has snacks and a full food truck.    

There is a minimum height of 36" and they accept cash only, but there is an ATM onsite.

Sugar Mountain Snow Tubing - Sugar Mountain NC

Sugar Mountain Resort is probably the most popular and well-known ski resort in the North Carolina mountains.  Of course, they offer not only great skiing but snow tubing as well.  

Snow Tubing at Sugar Mountain provides six runs that are 700 feet each.  All are served by a conveyor carpet lift system.  Snow Tubing is located near the skating rink and both have their own parking lot, just before you the ski resort.

Sugar Mountain provides Snowmaking and lights for night tubing and they regularly groom the lanes for smooth and fast rides.

Tube World - Maggie Valley NC

Tube World, located in Maggie Valley NC, just across from the old Ghost Town in the Sky Amusement Park provides 10-12 lanes with full artificial snow-making gear, keeping the slopes in great condition.   A magic carpet lift will take you back to the top time and time again.  

Tube World is not located at Cataloochee Ski Resort, but roadside in Maggie Valley itself, making access easy.  Tube World provides beverages and snacks, and a local food truck is often on-site for larger meals.

They do have a minimum height restriction of 42", and children cannot ride with adults.

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort - Mars Hill NC

Wolf Ridge Ski Resort is located just north of Asheville NC in Mars Hill.    Wolf Ridge Snow Tubing features a 60-foot wide slope that provides a 350-foot long run.  There are no designated lanes, unlike many other snow tubing venues.  This allows tubers to go down together and link up.

Use the "magic carpet" to return to the top and repeat the fun!   Wolf Ridge provides a lighted hill for nighttime tubing and has their own snow-making equipment.

They also have snack and drink options available, including hot cocoa!  Note that the snow tubing locations are separate from the Skiing area.

Zip N Slip Snow Tubing Park - Mars Hill NC

Zip N Slip Snow Tubing, located just north of Asheville NC provides 8-10 long runs for your snow tubing enjoyment.    For a fast return to the top, they provide a magic carpet lift.  

Zip N Slip makes its own snow, so there is plenty of it, for smooth and fast runs down the hill.   They have snacks, hot chocolate, and drinks and a food truck is often there as well.   Be sure to enjoy the firepit and marshmallows to warm up when you are done tubing!

Tennessee

Tennessee is not well known for snow skiing or tubing, but there are a few great places in and around the tourist towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge TN.   

Ober Gatlinburg - Gatlinburg TN

The most popular and well-known winter attraction is Ober Gatlinburg, located in Gatlinburg TN.    Ober Gatlinburg Snow Tubing delivers  350-foot long runs with a 50-foot drop.  They generally have 8-10 lanes depending on conditions.

A "Magic Carpet" will take tubers back to the top for more runs.  

Tubers Ages 3 – 5 must ride with an adult 18 years or older, Children ages 2 and under are not allowed to go tubing. Must be at least age 6 years old and 42″ tall to ride alone.

Ober Gatlinburg is generally very busy, so you'll want to book your tickets in advance.   Also, during peak weekends and holidays, there may be a wait.

Pigeon Forge Snow - Pigeon Forge TN

Pigeon Forge Snow offers a truly unique snow tubing experience, in that you can snow tube year-round!   Yes, they are open for snow tubing every day of the year AND they are indoors.   

You read that correctly, you can snow tube anytime, indoors, and it even stays 60-70 degrees inside.   The snow is real and they use modern snow-making equipment with no additives.  They even have a snow play area that is also open year-round.  

Tubing runs are 12 lanes that are 225 feet in length.   Tubers reach speeds of about 30mph.   A moving catwalk will take you back to the top for more runs.  

For the tubing, you must be at least 38 inches and 3 years old.  Reservations are not required, you just show up. 

Rowdy Bear's Smoky Mountain Snow Park - Pigeon Forge TN

Rowdy Bear Mountain is an entertainment venue located in Pigeon Forge TN, near the Titanic museum.   In the winter, they open up the Smoky Mountain Snow Park, which has snow tubing.   The tubing hill is over 500 feet in length with a 70-foot plus drop and is also the fastest outdoor tubing hill in Tennessee!  

They offer two Magic Carpet Conveyors to the top of the hill, complete with some of the most amazing views of the Smoky Mountains!  Grab some warm drinks and snacks at Sugar Bears Café And Creamery.  They also have baked goods and homemade ice cream!

Tuber must be at least 48″ tall to ride alone.  Children must be 40″ tall to participate with an adult over the age of 18

Virginia

When you think of outdoor winter activities and sports, Virginia is probably not the first state that comes to mind.  In fact, it probably wouldn't even make anyone's list, but Virginia actually has a large number of winter resorts and snow tubing venues.   Enough of them to compete with some of the top states that generally come to mind.

Even more surprising, Virginia just may have one of the top, if not the top winter resorts and snow tubing destinations in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

Bryce Resort - Basye VA

Snow Tubing at Bryce Resort in Basye Virginia offers 3 800-foot lanes of snow for you to speed down.   To quickly get back up to make the most of your time, Bryce Resort provides a conveyor belt to take you back up to the top.

Children must be at least 36" tall and 4 years of age to ride, and only 1 person per tube is allowed.   Ice skating is also available at a discounted price for tubers.

Family Adventure Park - Massanutten VA

Voted the best snow tubing by Washingtonian, Massanutten Snow Tubing, offers up 16 different snow tubing lanes, each over 900ft in length.   Even better?  The drop is 120 feet for fast and long runs.

Massanutten has a unique snow tubing experience called Northern Lights Snow Tubing, an "out-of-this-world experience".  You'll zoom down the snow tubing hill surrounded by the glow of neon lights and pumping music.   The experience gives the effect of snow tubing under the Northern Lights.

Massanutten provides state-of-the-art snow-making machines, which may be running during your visit.   Children must be at least 36 inches tall to tube and must be accompanied by an adult while in the Family Adventure Park.  

The Plunge Snow Tubing Park - Roseland VA

The Plunge by Wintergreen resort is the largest snow tubing facility in the Virginia Blue Ridge.   The plunge provides a hill the size of a ten-story building, and a tubing run that is longer than 3 football fields.   That works out to be about a 1,000-foot run with a 140-foot elevation drop.   

They provide a lift for a quick return to the top and have snow-making equipment as well for pristine (and fast) rides.  Tubers must be 42 inches or taller to ride The Plunge. 

Snow Tubing Tips

Although snow tubing is easy and no lessons are needed, there are a few things that can help you enjoy your snow tubing adventure even more:

• Wear warm socks and waterproof or water-resistant winter boots. Cold and wet feet will ruin your experience and can hurt your feet.  At the very least, wear close-toed shoes.
• Wear a waterproof or water-resistant winter jacket.
• Wear waterproof/water-resistant pants and if you are cold-natured, make sure to wear thermal underwear or some other layer underneath your pants.  Avoid cotton (jeans) if possible.
• Fourth, wear a beanie or toboggan to help keep you warm.  If you have them, bring some sunglasses, the sun and snow are very bright.
• Bring some cash - Some places are cash only, and it makes getting small snacks and drinks easier.
• Bring your patience, especially on holidays and peak times.   Waits can often be long due to the large crowds.

Hendersonville, North Carolina

Come Home for the Holidays in Hendersonville, NC. Hendersonville really goes all out for the holiday season, with beautiful decorations adorning the downtown streets, trees, and businesses. The historic courthouse features several large decorated Christmas trees. The lighting of the main tree by Santa kicks off the entire series of Home for the Holidays events.

What is Tweetsie Christmas?

Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, is an amusement park and heritage railroad, that people from all over the world have been visiting since it opened in 1957.

While Tweetsie itself, on a normal day of operation, is about as much family fun as it gets, Tweetsie also has a number of special events and trains throughout the year, including the magical Tweetsie Christmas Event.

The train ride itself takes about 20 minutes. The historic steam engines and cars are decorated and lit up for Christmas, and just beautiful. On your 3-mile ride, you'll see thousands of Christmas lights and displays while listening to cheerful Christmas music played on LCD displays in the train cars. Be sure to wave at the crowds as you leave and enter the station area!

Besides the train ride, there is much more to see and do! Tweetsie Christmas offers:

• The entire lower portion of the park is decorated with beautiful Christmas lights and displays. The upper portion of the park is closed for Tweetsie Christmas.
• Santa's Ginger Bread house where you can see Santa.
• There are campfires to stay warm by, or roast s'mores on (available for purchase)
• You can enjoy a hot cup of cocoa or spiced cider.
• Visit the man gift shops
• See the Live Christmas show
• Limited children's rides are open and running

What You Need to Know

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent visit, and want to share a few tips with you:

• It was 32 degrees when we were there, so dress warmly to enjoy your visit.  Remember too, that the train cars are open-air cars, so it gets a bit chilly (they are not heated cars).
• Space is limited on the train, so we highly recommend you purchase your tickets in advance, which will also book you a train time in advance.
• If you are a photographer or videographer, you'll want to do you train ride early, so there is more light.   We also recommend sitting towards the back of the train to get that long train shot from the rear.
• We sat on the left side of the train, and while it was pretty, the lights on the right side of the train are better.

Georgia

Mercier Orchards

Mercier Orchard is located in Blue Ridge, Georgia and is a wonderful place to take your family for apple picking.  The orchard has been family owned and operated since 1943 and is on our "must visit" list when visiting Blue Ridge Georgia.   When visiting, you can pick:

• Strawberries
• Blueberries
• Blackberries
• Apples

Availability is seasonal.  They also have a large store where you can pick-up some delicious fruit, fresh baked goods, cider, hard cider, and specialty items from the market when you visit.  They also have a full cafe, and tractor rides!

7-18-2021 - "U-Pick" is currently not available, but we hope they will open it up again very soon.  The Orchard is still very much worth a visit!

B.J. Reece Orchards 

This family owned and operated orchard, located in Eilljay GA is home to u-pick Apple orchards, a country bakery, pony rides, petting zoo, and more!   They are rated as one of Georgia's  top “fun get-a-way” destinations.

They have a variety of fruits to pick from, such as peaches, blueberries, muscadine, and various vegetables.  U-pick is available for Apples in the Fall.   Did we mention they have fried pies too?

North Carolina

Jeter Mountain Farm Orchard

Jeter Mountain Farm is located in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and has been active farm since 1813.  When visiting, you can enjoy wagon rides out to our u-pick orchards, where you can fill your baskets with berries, peaches, pumpkins, grapes and over 20 varieties of apples.   They also have cider, apple cider donuts, a kids play area, and a market.

Their orchard is a good place to get outdoors, enjoy some family time, and to bring home some fresh u-picked fruits, donuts and cider.

Sky Top Orchard

Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock NC not only offers u-pick Apples, but scenic mountain views, ponds with duck and geese, goats, chickens, turkeys, peacocks and more, a bamboo forest to explore, playground for kids, lots of picnic areas, and tractor rides as well.  

They have apples, cider, pumpkins, and baked cider donuts as well!

Orchard at Altapass, Blue Ridge Parkway

Probably one of the most well known and visited orchards in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and directly off the Blue Ridge Parkway, is historic Orchard at Altapass.  

The Orchard features beautiful scenery, u-pick apples, a general store, music, dancing, a grill, walking trails, and more.  This is a great place to stop when traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or makes for a great destination by itself!

Virginia

Dickie Bros Orchard

The Dickie Bros Orchard is located in Roseland, Virginia, with apples, peaches, plums, and blackberries available. Their family has been working the farm since the mid 1700s.   During Apple season, they offer U-Pick Apples from their orchard.   You can also visit their farm store which has lots of  fresh fruit from the farm, as well as  local artists' designs and creations...  pottery, paintings, crafts and more.

A visit to Dickie Bros Orchard is a great way to spend the day, and you get to come home with some delicious fruit to enjoy as well

Johnson’s Orchard

If you’re near Bedford, Virginia and the famous Peaks of Otter, you’re in luck.   Johnson’s Orchard is a family owned an operated farm and is a place for families of all ages.  The farm has more than 200 acres and 7500 apple trees. 

With apples to pick, and a winery as well, the whole family can have something to do and enjoy.

Buffalo Trail Orchard

The Buffalo Trail Orchard, located in Greenville, Tennessee, is an Orchard where you can pick a large variety of fruits, such as berries, nectarines, plums, apples, squash, peaches, and pumpkins. More information is found on their Facebook page, including the hours.

Mountain Mist Farms

Mountain Mist Farms is a you-pick berry farm in the summer, and a winery year round. They provide u-pick options for Blackberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Red & Black Currants, Gooseberries, and Elderberries.  They also have Apple and Cherry Trees.  Their you-pick is some of the best Blackberries, Raspberries, and Blueberries in East Tennessee. 

Their Farm Winery is family owned for over 20 years, and 3 generations.  They even have their own bee hives and fresh honey!

Hurricane Helene Impact

Hurricane Helene caused the Broad River to flood significantly and breach its banks. The resulting flooding and powerful waters destroyed much of the town of Chimney Rock and the nearby Bat Cave area. The floodwaters washed away much of Highway 74 in the area, the road into Bat Cave and Chimney Rock from Hendersonville.  

The significant flooding changed the course of the Broad River. While the damage was significant, progress is being made. Highway 74 is being rebuilt. Crews have mostly returned the Broad River to its original path, and the town itself is being rebuilt.

Chimney Rock State Park reopened on June 27, 2025, but there is currently no ETA at this time for the town re-opening to visitors.

Be Advised - You will need to access Chimney Rock State Park through Lake Lure - All other roads are open to local traffic only.

About Chimney Rock State Park

People have been enjoying the "chimney" and its surrounding cliffs for a very long, and well before Dr. Lucius B. Morse discovered it, and opened it to the public as a private park in 1902.

Today, Chimney Rock State Park encompasses over 6,800 acres that include the signature 315-foot tall granite rock chimney, the 404 foot tall Hickory Nut Falls, Devil's Head a balanced rock, that looks the head of a devil, a number of unique scenic overlooks.  

In 2006, Chimney Rock State Park expanded by 1,568-acre when the "World's Edge" property was added, containing numerous hiking trails, scenic views, streams, and waterfalls.

Getting up to the Chimney at Chimney Rock

From the main entrance off Highway 74, located in downtown Chimney Rock Village, you'll first cross over the metal entry bridge that spans Broad River.  You'll then begin a curvy accent up to the entry gate, where you can purchase your tickets, and get a nice trail map (which can be recycled).

After purchasing your tickets, you'll hang a right and head up to The Meadows.  The Meadows is a common area, popular for various conventions and group meets.  While we were there, there was a large Girl Scout Event.  The Meadows is also the location for:

• The Great Woodland Adventure Trail - An educational and easy trail intended for young children
• Animal Discovery Den - This exhibit houses a number of the Park's animals, and animal educators will help kids and "kids at heart" learn more about them.
• Climbing Tower - Try out the new climbing tower, an artificial climbing tower.  Advanced reservations are required.

From the Meadows, the road narrows and continues its curvy assent up the mountainside to the parking lot located at the bottom of Chimney Rock.  Look for the small rock house as you drive up the road, this was the original gatekeepers home when the park first opened.

As you drive up, think back to the days when the park was privately owned, and car races were held on the very same road.  The historic "Hillclimb Race" at one time, challenged drivers, to see who could climb the curvy road from the Meadows up to the main parking lot the fastest ... just don't speed while you're imagining

Chimney Rock Parking Area

After a couple of miles, you'll reach the main parking area below the Chimney (shown in the photo to the right).   Just below and before the parking area, you will have passed the entrance to the Hickory Nut Falls Trail.   We discuss that trail in more detail below.

Park staff will direct you to where to park.  From the Parking lot walk up to the gift shop and visitor's center.

You can enter the elevator tunnel from there OR ... If you want to head up the stairs and hike your way up (more to see), head on past the gift shop.  Bathrooms are located just past the Visitor's Center on the right.

Up to the Chimney via the Outcroppings Trail

Just past the bathrooms, and to the left you'll see the stairs leading up to the Chimney.  The stairs begin the Outcroppings Trail.  

You'll also see Gneiss Cave here at the start of the trail.  

Gneiss Cave

Gneiss Cave (pronounced "nice") is named after the local Henderson Gneiss granite and is the rock that forms the 535-million-year-old Chimney.  The cave isn't deep, but you can sure feel the temperature cool down as you go down the short stairway.  Duck your head!  

Gneiss Cave is a Talus Cave, created when a large rock slid off the side of the mountain at some point, and settled here, forming the cave.  We're glad it did, as it makes for a neat little cave to explore, and a cool retreat from the hot sun!

499 stairs to go ...

From Gneiss Cave, as you begin your trip up the recently redone Outcroppings trail, you'll have 499 stairs to climb.   It's a workout, but the view at the top is well worth it.  On the way up, there are some interesting areas to explore!  The new stairs, recently built over the course of 2 years, offer frequent resting points on the way up.

On the way up, you'll have a couple of spots to visit, and to take a breather!  

Vista Rock, Pulpit Rock and the Grotto both provide beautiful scenic views from a large rock, as you would expect.  

The Subway is basically a rock tunnel you bend over to go through was originally part of the original and now closed Cliff Trail.  The subway is now incorporated into the Outcroppings Trail and Crevice Pass.

As you reach the top of the last staircase, you'll see the Sky Lounge in front of you, the stairs going up the Chimney to your left, and the beginning of the Exclamation Point Trail to your right (stone stairs going further up).

At this point, you should feel very proud of yourself!  You made it!

Chimney Rock

From the main deck at Sky Lounge (also called the Chimney Level), the top of the Chimney is just a few more stairs up (47 to be precise).  The views from the Chimney are absolutely amazing.

Chimney Rock is 315 foot tall, from the parking lot level and is a granite monolith (fancy word meaning it's all one piece).   The Chimney is 535-million-year-old and has an elevation of 2,280 feet.  From the top, you can see Lake Lure, the Piedmont, and many distant mountain ranges.  The view is one of the best you can find in the Eastern US.

Sky Lounge at Chimney Rock

The Sky Lounge is a snack bar and gift shop, located at the Chimney Level.   The lounge is also the destination for the Elevator coming up from the parking lot.  You'll find lots of neat merchandise, good food, cold drinks, and bathrooms here.

The views from the picnic tables outside are excellent!   You'll also find water for your dog here as well.  The Chimney Rock staff are kind enough to keep these bowls full.

Most people stop at the Chimney, and don't go further up.  If you want even more incredible views, and a longer more vigorous hike, you'll want to head on up to Exclamation Point.

Exclamation Point Trail

Exclamation Point Trail begins at the stone steps, just across from the Chimney at the Chimney Level near Sky Lounge.   This trail is a 0.7-mile round trip that will take about 45 minutes.   The trail is moderate to strenuous and is uphill with more stairs (I know ... but it's worth it!).

The trail will take you 200 more feet above the Chimney, and up to Exclamation point - The highest viewpoint in the park.  On the way up you'll see the Opera Box, one of my favorite places to sit and enjoy the view, and also Devil's Head - A balanced rock on the cliffside that looks like a Devil.  The Opera Box is a favorite photo spot for photographers due to the great view of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure in the distance.

Exclamation point is a large rock face that provides outstanding views, and a great place to sit and relax.  There is often a nice breeze here, making for a cool resting point, even on hot days.  The drop from here is significant, so be sure to stay off and behind the fence.

Skyline Trail

Along with the Cliffside trail, the Skyline trail was also closed in the early 2000s for safety reasons.  Sadly two children and one adult had fallen to the deaths.   When the State took over ownership of the property, the trails were closed.

In 2017, a new and much safer Skyline trail opened for visitors.  This trail goes further up into the woods, and does not allow direct access to the upper portion of the Falls.  You can see it, you just can't get to it, and for good reason.

The new Skyline trail is a moderate 2.2 mile roundtrip hike.    This hike is more remote, and there is no access to food or water, so you'll want to bring those items with you.

The trailhead is located at the top of Exclamation Point, and is a really nice hike through the woods, and partially creekside.   As you near the Upper area of Hickory Nut Falls, you'll see a clearing with old picnic tables on your right.  This was the crew camp for the film crew for the Hollywood movie, Last of the Mohicans.

Hickory Nut Falls Trail

After visiting the Chimney and the various overlooks, we decided to head down to to the base of Hickory Nut Falls, a 404-foot tall waterfall.  The trailhead is located below the parking area on the road just prior to reaching the parking area.  

Hickory Nut Falls Trail is 1.5 miles roundtrip, and moderate, with just a few uphill areas and some stairs.  This is a great trail for families with small children who like to walk.  

Back "in the day", this was an old Jeep trail. Guides would bring visitors to the falls using Jeeps.  You'll notice the trail is wider than a normal hiking trail.

The trail will bring you to a small clearing below the falls, with some seating areas and picnic tables.  You'll climb up a short flight of stone stairs to reach the base of the falls, where there is an observation deck and access to the water and the small swimming pool below it.   This was a popular destination for people and had a large crowd the whole time we were there.

This trail also connects with the Four Season's Trail, which will take you through a nice wooded forest hike down the meadows.

Hickory Nut Falls

Hickory Nut Falls is a 404-foot tall waterfall, that is visible from Chimney Rock Village, and plummets off the top ridge of the mountain.   The waterfall was featured in the movie Last of the Mohicans.  It's also the second highest falls, east of the Mississippi.

Which Hiking Trail at Chimney Rock is right for you?

There are six trails at Chimney Rock State Park:

Great Woodland Adventure Trail

0.6 Miles Roundtrip - Easy - 15-45 minutes

This trail is perfect for families with young children.  The trail is educational, and interactive, teaching about the area, including its wildlife.

The Outcroppings Trail

0.5 Miles Round Trip - Moderate to Strenuous - 20 minutes

UPDATE: The Elevator is currently closed, and anyone wishing to view the Chimney will have to use this trail.

If you prefer to walk up the Chimney and Chimney Level, rather than ride the elevator, this is the trail for you.   This is also the trail you'll need to use if you have your dog with you.  The trail offers sturdy well-built stairs to make the climb, and a number of geological features to explore on the way up.

Four Seasons Trail

1.2 Miles Roundtrip - Moderate to Strenuous - 1.5 hours

This trail is perfect for the wildlife, and wildflower fans.   The trail makes a pretty steep uphill climb from The Meadows to the Hickory Nut Falls Trail.  Along the trail, you'll find birdhouses and signage about the variety and types of birds in the area.

This trail is beautiful, and also provides a good workout!

Hickory Nut Falls Trail

1.5 Miles Roundtrip - Moderate - 1 hour

This is a great family trail, that takes you out to the 404 foot tall Hickory Nut Falls.  Along the way are some interesting natural features, and educational signage about them.

Exclamation Point Trail

0.7 Miles Roundtrip - Moderate to Strenuous - 45 minutes

While this isn't an easy trail, due to the climb up, it's worth it to reach the highest point in the park, Exclamation point.  You'll ascend about 200 feet above the Chimney.  Along the way, you'll see the Opera Box and Devil's Head.

Skyline Trail

2.2 Miles Roundtrip - Moderate - 2 hours

This is the newest trail, and uses the same name as the old trail that used to take you to the top of Hickory Nut Falls.   The hike will take you to a viewing deck where you can view the top of Hickory Nut Falls, and the smaller waterfalls prior to the 404 foot plunge.

You will not be able to access the lower portion of the Falls itself, like in years before.

Chimney Rock in the Fall

While Chimney Rock is magical and beautiful year round, the Fall season is exceptional.   Fall colors at Chimney Rock generally peak in late October in early November, later than most of the Blue Ridge due to the lower elevations.  

We highly recommend visiting Chimney Rock NC when Fall colors are at their peak.   You can read more about Fall Colors at the various elevations using our Fall Colors Guide, which is updated each year in the Fall - We specifically note peak color times for Chimney Rock.

Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing is a popular activity at Chimney Rock State Park, and Chimney Rock State Park has partnered with a certified climbing education company.   Rock climbing instruction is available at all different levels, with many different areas and routes available.  Including the new Rumbling Bald area of the park.

The minimum age and weight for climbs and rappels is 7 years old and 50 pounds. There is no maximum age.  Climbs must be booked in advance.   You can learn more about Rock Climbing at Chimney Rock State Park on their website.

Did you know Santa practices making it up and down kid's Chimneys each year at Chimney Rock??   It's true!  What better place to practice, than at the world's largest Chimney right??   If you visit Chimney Rock on in early December, you can see Santa practicing his climbing skills on the Chimney!  For more information on this unique and fun Christmas event, head over to the Chimney Rock events page.

Movies filmed at Chimney Rock

Due to the unique geological formations, and incredibly beautiful scenery, Chimney Rock, Chimney Rock Village, and Lake Lure have served as filming locations for a number of very popular movies:

Last of the Mohicans - The final 17 minutes of the movie where filmed at Chimney Rock State Park, including the famous fight scene at the top of a waterfall.  The waterfall is Hickory Nut Falls, and the scenes leading up to the final scene were filmed along the old Cliff Trail.

A Breed Apart - Wooded areas and trails from the park, were used for outdoor scenes in the movie.  Exclamation Point was the site of the eagle’s eyrie.

Dirty Dancing - Camp scenes, cabin scenes, and many outdoor locations were filmed at Lake Lure, including the famous water lift scene, where the water, due to being behind on their filming schedule, was ice cold.  The famous scene where Baby is dancing down the stone stairs, was filmed at a location that is now a private development, located off Boys Camp Rd.

Firestarter - Stephen King's famous 80s horror movie, Firestarter had filming locations in Chimney Rock and Lake Lure.  This includes a few cabin scenes, and Chimney Rock Park's entrance and bridge were used.

Here is the final scenes in Last of the Mohicans, filmed on the old Cliff Trail and at the top of Hickory Nut Falls.

Tips for Visiting Chimney Rock

We've been visiting Chimney Rock State Park since the 1990s when it was privately owned.   Here are some tips we've learned over the years to help make your visit more enjoyable:

• When visiting in the summer or if you are a photographer, arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon.  The lighting is better, and the temperatures are cooler.  Midday sun can be very hot during the day, so bring sunscreen.
• For fewer crowds, visit during the week.  Weekends are always the busiest times.
• Dress comfortably, and be aware that it can be cooler and more windy up at the Chimney level than it is down in Chimney Rock Village.
• Wear comfortable shoes, either hiking boots or tennis shoes.  Sandals and dress shoes do not work well at all.
• Grab a park map, and visit all of the great locations like the Grotto, Subway and Opera box.
• Dogs are allowed in the park and on trails, but must be on a leash, and are not allowed in the Elevator.
• Bathrooms are located at the top of the parking lot across from the gift shop, where you catch the Elevator.  They are also located in Sky Lounge at the Chimney level and at the Meadows.
• Be sure to visit Chimney Rock Village for a little shopping, food, and an overnight stay.
• If you plan to hike, bring some water, or buy some at the gift shop prior to hitting the trail.
• If you visit the waterfall, be smart.  Don't climb up on the rocks, and be careful getting in the water - the rocks are slick!
• If you bring children, keep them close.   While there is safety fencing, and the park is family safe, some of the areas you will be close to having very long and sheer drops right next to the trails and overlooks.  Be safe!

Chimney Rock Village

Chimney Rock Village sits just below the high cliffs of Chimney Rock State Park and surrounds the entrance to the park.  Chimney Rock Village primarily caters to visitors of the state park and nearby Lake Lure.  

The village is full of unique locally owned shops, restaurants, hotels, motels, and Inns.

Shopping and Dining

All around the entrance to Chimney Rock State Park are a number of locally owned shops and restaurants.  Many carry Chimney Rock memorabilia, along with local arts and crafts.   There are small ice cream shops, coffee shops, candy stores and more.

While visiting, we've eaten a Medinas and Riverwatch Bar & Grill.  We enjoyed both.  We also got a great cup of coffee at Coffee on the Rocks, before we left for home.

Staying Overnight

There are a number of options for overnight stays in the area, the majority of them are locally owned and often very historic businesses.   Over the years, we've stayed overnight at two places: The Lake Lure Inn, the Fibber Magees and The Willowbrook Inn.

We enjoyed all of them very much.   We've also heard great things about The Esmeralda Inn & Restaurant, but have not personally stayed there.

Reopening for 2026!

After being closed for the 2025 season, the Land of Oz on Beech Mountain is set to reopen in 2026 with a special “Homecoming at Oz” season.

In September, the popular Autumn at Oz festival will return, bringing visitors back to the Yellow Brick Road for one of the most unique experiences in the North Carolina mountains.

Autumn in Oz is the oldest and largest special event at the Land of Oz.

You'll join Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion as they journey down the yellow brick road to find Emerald City a the Wizard of OZ. Along the way, you'll even run into Munchkins, Flying Monkeys, Toto, and yes, even the Wicked Witch!

Where to Stay When Visiting The Land of Oz

There are several mountain towns within a short drive of the Land of Oz NC, the closest being Beech Mountain NC, which offers several great places to stay. Other nearby options include Banner Elk, which is just a short drive down the mountain and Blowing Rock and Boone NC, both of which are about 45 minutes away.

Blowing Rock and Boone both offer more lodging options, but Beech Mountain and Banner Elk are closer to the Land of Oz.

Tips for Visiting Land of Oz

We have been attending the Autumn in Oz event at Land of Oz in Beech Mountain NC for many years now, and enjoy it and look forward to it each and every year.    Over that time, and through many visits, we've picked up a few tips that will help you enjoy your visit to the Merry'old Land of Oz North Carolina even more!

1. Get your tickets as soon as possible - Tickets and limited and sell out quickly, especially the most popular dates and times.   So purchase your tickets as quickly as you can.
2. Get lodging early - We recommend booking your lodging as soon as you get your tickets.  The area has a limited number of lodging options and they fill up quickly.  You can find lodging options here.
3. Take the Ski Lift Up - Yes it's more money, but faster, more scenic and fun.   The bus ride isn't bad, but the ski life up is just better, and the views are out of this world.
4. Bring extra clothing layers, and rain gear - Temperatures and wind up on the top of the mountain, where Land of Oz is located can be significantly colder and more windy.  The event occurs rain or shine, so if they are calling for rain, come prepared.
5. Dress up in your Oz Apparel - Many guests dress up in their favorite character, or wear funny Oz related clothing and items.   It's part of the fun, and we encourage it!
6. Leave No Trace - The park is a historic treasure, and the staff work very hard to keep it looking nice and memorable.  Avoid damaging or stealing anything.   Always leave to trace.
7. Buy Food and Gifts - The park makes money to keep this event going, and to improve each and every year through ticket sales, and through sales of merchandise and food.  So be sure to eat at the park, take home some cool merchandise and help this wonderful event continue.
8. Take your time - You have plenty of time during your tour, so take your time and enjoy the shows and scenery and just being there.  We see far too many rushing through.
9. Bring the kiddos! - This is a family event, and we encourage you to bring children so they can experience Oz as well.
10. Leave your Toto at home - The park is not dog friendly, so "Toto" will need to stay home in Kansas.

Other Things to do near Land of Oz

Land of Oz North Carolina is very close to Beech Mountain, and near to Banner Elk, Blowing Rock and Boone NC. The entire area is full of fun things to see and do. Here are just a few suggestions:

Beech Mountain NC

Visit Fred's General Store - Fred's store in Beech Mountain is amazing, and full of food, clothing, gifts and more.   The old store also has a great restaurant and deli downstairs, and beautiful grounds to explore as well.   They even have fresh produce.

Explore Buckeye Recreation Center and Buckeye Falls - Not far from downtown Beech Mountain is Buckeye Recreation Center which has a small lake, hiking trails, picnic tables, and even a waterfall.

Go Hiking in the Emerald Outback - The Emerald Outback was an original part of the Land of Oz, but is now a public recreation area full of outstanding hiking trails and scenic views.

Grab some Pizza at Famous Brick Oven Pizza - Hungry, be sure to stop off at Famous Brick Oven Pizza - Pizza, games, and more - Fun for the whole family.

Banner Elk NC

Just down the mountain from Beech Mountain is the small, but awesome town of Banner Elk.  Banner Elk is full of fun things to:

Visit Banner House Museum - Visit and take a tour of this historic Banner Elk home. You'll learn the history, and see the home decorated as it probably was in the late 1800s.  The best part of this tour is meeting and interacting with the staff!

See the animals at Apple Hill Farm - Just outside of Banner Elk is an Alpaca and active farm.  You can see pigs, Alpaca, cows, goats, horses and more.

Ride the Wilderness Run Mountain Coaster or try to navigate their Adventure Course - Looking for some high speed action and challenging adventure?  Wilderness Run delivers.  You can ride the incredible mountain coaster AND see if you can ring the bell on the Adventure course.

Enjoy an awesome dinner at LP on Main or Stonewalls Steakhouse - Two of our favorite restaurants in the Blue Ridge Mountains are in Banner Elk, both serving delicious drinks and food, with outdoor seating, and fantastic service.

Visit Banner Elk Winery - Yes, Banner Elk has a winery, and it's wonderful.  The wine is great, and you can do a tasting session or get a sampler.   They have indoor and outdoor seating, beautiful grounds, live music, and snacks to enjoy.   This is a great place.

Visit Grandfather Mountain - About 15 minutes from Banner Elk is Grandfather Mountain, where you can walk across the mile high bridge and stand atop of the on tallest and most famous mountains in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Blowing Rock NC

See the Blowing Rock - See the attractions that Blowing Rock is named for. Offering incredible views of the surrounding mountains.

Ride Tweetsie Railroad - Take a ride in the old West on a steam engine, ride the exciting rides, enjoy some great food, and see the animals. Tweetsie is fun for the whole family!

Defy Gravity at Mystery Hill - One of just a few gravity attractions in the US, you'll defy gravity and explore the mysterious at Mystery Hill. You can also go axe throwing and ride the mechanical bull.

Explore the historic downtown - Blowing Rock has a wonderful historic downtown full of great shops and restaurants.

Grab dinner at our favorite place, the Speckled Trout - Located in the heart of downtown, and you can eat while enjoying all the action going on in town and live music.

Boone NC

Visit Mast General Store an the nearby original Mast General Store - Boone has its own Mast General Store in the historic downtown area, but not far outside of Boone, you can also visit the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis NC.

Shop in Downtown - Visit the historic downtown of Boone, also home to Appalachian State University. You'll find lots of great shopping options, restaurants, and bars.

Explore the Blue Ridge Parkway - Located between Boone and Blowing Rock NC, you can access the wonderful and amazing Blue Ridge Parkway for incredible scenic views. Visit nearby Moses Cone Memorial Park.

Go hiking and visit waterfalls - Boone has lots of nearby hiking trails and waterfalls to explore.

A Visual Tour of the Land of Oz NC

To the right of Dorothy's home is the barn.  During the Autumn in Oz Event, the barn is where your first performance begins.  

You'll watch a song and dance show here with Dorothy, Hunk, Hickory, and Zeke, then follow Dorothy over to her house, where she'll perform Somewhere Over the Rainbow, followed by a visit with Professor Marvel.  See our video to watch Land of Oz clips re-enacting these famous movie scenes.  The actress that plays the part, really sings the song, and it's fabulous.

Of course, just down the path, you'll see your first glimpse of the Yellow Brick road, and it looks amazing and very movie like.  The road gets a fresh coat of paint each year.

Emerald City

As you pass the poppies, you'll reach the gates to Emerald City.  You can (and should) ring the bell and be "greeted" by the Gate Keeper, who of course tells you the bell is broken and that you should knock!  This is probably our favorite character interaction, and the main actor that plays this role does a fabulous job.

Meeting the Wizard

At the end of your visit and journey, you'll go into a tent, where the Wizard scene from the movie is re-enacted.  You'll sit down for a 15-minute show where the cast meets the Wizard, receives their rewards, and sadly Dorothy returns home.   The show is VERY well done, and Dorothy even returns to Kansas in a puff of smoke!

A Brief History of the Land of Oz

In 1965, Carolina Caribbean Company (CCC), owned by Grover and Harry Robbins, were looking for ways to fully utilize their latest acquisition, Beech Mountain,  In particular, they wanted to find ways to bring people to Beech Mountain year round, and not just during the winter during ski season.

The pair brought in Charlotte designer Jack Pentas, who surveyed the top of Beech Mountain and had an idea .. The Beech trees looked very much like the Apple Trees in the Wizard of Oz.

The Land of Oz opened on June 15, 1970.  The park took 2 years to complete, at a cost of $5 million dollars (about $34 million in today's dollars).  During its first year alone, over 400,000 people walked the yellow brick road.  The park was an overnight success, and the most successful them park on the east coast.

1970 - 1975

Unfortunately as soon as the park experienced its huge success, problems began to occur, which ultimately doomed the theme park to failure.

Grover Robbins, who was well known as the "the passion" behind the Land of Oz, died of cancer just prior to the park opening in 1970.   Instead of profits being funneled back into Oz for maintenance and expansion, the money was used for other CCC endeavors.  You may recognize the name Grover Robbins as the founder of Tweetsie Railroad as well.

Additionally, the gas crisis of the early 70s, caused many would-be visitors to not attend, hurting park attendance and profits.  

In 1975, one of the major resorts owned by CCC failed, causing CCC to go into bankruptcy.  On December 28th, 1975, a fire was set at Emerald City, causing significant damage.  There is some speculation, the fires were caused by disgruntled employees, but that has not been proven.  After the fire, a number of collectible items and costumes were stolen, including Judy Garland's original dress from the movie.

1976 - 1980

In 1976, a new management company took over.  The fire damage was repaired, new buildings were created.  The park opened for the 1976 season.  Sadly, attendance was poor.

Many changes were made to reduce costs, including less extensive costumes, replacement of live animals, with animatronic versions, changes to shows, and many others.

Over the next 5 years, the park suffered greatly from a lack of maintenance and no updates.  Many of the structures, and the yellow brick road, showed signs of age, and much-needed repairs.  To repair Oz and update it, it would cost the new company $3.5 million.  They closed the park in 1980.
